1) Jurkin sat out with injury this year and never got on the court cuz he's nowhere near good enough, and that's sad bc he's 7'0 and long. He sat out 2 years ago for perceived impermissable benefits from Indiana Elite founder/his guardian Mark Adams, and Perea did as well. He may never play minutes at IU between injury and lack of development, but he was important in getting Yogi.

2) Blackmon will start. The best shooter in the nation (arguably) and a McD's AA will start from Day 1 on a team that has no shooters besides Ferrell.

3) Stan Robinson was not a primary starter; only did late in the year. The 2 and 3 spots were typically Evan Gordon, Will Sheehey, or Austin Etherington for most of the year.

4) Robert Johnson will play a lot. Top 50 recruit and a scorer.

5) Agreed, this team may not be very good. However, if they land 1-2 recruits and 1-2 transfers, they may be better than extected, maybe top 4-7 in the league.  Expect Josh Cunningham to commit to IU on Wendesday next week. He's a top 100ish PF/SF. Yante Maten from Michigan is a possibility, but looks like MSU since they offered and since Izzo has a lot of PT to offer now without Payne, Harris, Appling and the others. Trevor Thompson from Va Tech, Eron Harris from WVa, and a few others out there as possibilities.

Blackmons

I can attest from scouting plenty of Luers games 2 years ago that Vijay is nowhere ner the ballplayer that James is. Can't speak for the youngest honestly. And Vijay is 2 years younger than James, but everyone KNEW that James was special as a frosh. Not so much with Vijay. It's more of he gets numbers bc there's no one else on the team besides him and James, and their dad is the coach.

However you are right on the Zellers: they do get better with age. Not so much so with the Plumlees though...

IU fans

IU fans (and I am one, admittedly) are by and large worn out on Crean. I think we had decided to bear with some of his quirks and idiosyncracies while rebuilding since we saw guys like Zeller and Ferrell jump on board while still being decimated by the foolishness that was hiring Kelvin Sampson. However, all the transfers (run out or otherwise) and some of his recent decisions, namely the Meyer thing which was the tipping point for me, have soured a lot of Hoosier fans on him. Couple all that with his inability to coach in-game, and I think 2014-15 may be the end of the road for him in Bloomington unless he overachieves big time. Pretty hard to do with no frontcourt however.

2 things

Hyron Edwards is from Indiana, not Illinois. It is legitimately confusing because he's from a city called East Chicago, but it is in the Region in Indiana.

And in regards to Eron Gordon, it'll be a hard pull for anyone but IU, seeing as both Eric and middle brother Evan (who just transferred to IU from Arizona State as a 5th year guy) are both Hoosier guys.

Vince Edwards

is from OH not, IN, although it is becoming normal to steal top kids from the Hoosier state.

Seems like the quality

of kids brought in by Hoke are amazing. Not saying anything about former staffs, just noting how high character the last few classes seem.

Ah yes...

of course. The silent e gets me again!

ITH

I don't know about Bozich being a homer. He has a really good rep, as does his dad.

And it does actually seem like this is something that is on Remy and for him to decide, not a "creaning."

This is from ITH, but it's basically just quotes from his HS coach and mentor. The quote that stuck out to me was (paraphrasing) the coach telling Remy he has to make a final call soon bc it isn't fair to keep IU in the lurch. Bash away.

http://www.insidethehall.com/2013/04/17/abell-having-second-thoughts-on-decision-to-leave-iu/

Sorta OT

But do you pronounce his last name "Spayt" or "Spite"?

That would be a douche move

but where is it said that Abell was forced to transfer?

IU fans

hope Remy comes back. He would play a vital role on the team.

Word is that Remy initially wanted to transfer. He said he wanted to play more and be the primary starting point guard on a D1 team, which would never happen with Yogi there. Also of note, all his best friends on the team were the graduating/early entry guys.

Now his mom and all of his support system are encouraging him to stay. I hope he does. Depth and experience, plus great defense, are always at a premium.

However, IU fans like me will readily admit that we have how Crean uses the oversigning rule. There seem to be plausible excuses that could be given for guys like Buss Patterson and Matt Roth, but it still is a rule we don't like. Plus it looks bad to outsiders and furthers the notion that Crean is a win-at-any-cost type of guy (which I don't believe, but gets harder and harder to defend all the time with his antics).

I agree Minny

looks awful, but the eye test only goes so far. Their ratings in RPI, SOS, BPI and the like are certainly top 68. If they lose today, they'll be a 9 or 10 seed, win and they're an 8 or 9.

I think

Botth Illinois and Minny make it in regardless of outcome. Minny's SOS and quality wins are really good, and Illinois has beaten Gonzaga and Indiana.

For Iowa, I think they need at least 2 wins in the BTT to be considered. Three and they're in. Four, well, obviously...

Now Adam Schefter

is saying Quin deal isn't done...

Quin

Glover Quin signed too.

Obviously

I agree with your sentiment. I simply said I hope these 5 prove to be the best, as they have the potential to be dominating with size. Not stargazing.

What

would be your ideal LB group on the field?

I hope it shakes out like this

Lewan, Braden, Miller, Kalis, Schofield

Hmmm..

What are you skilled at?

What am i trying to get you to believe?

I don't care if you believe if I'm a michigan football fan or not. I'm certainly not trolling. You just don't like my opinion. I think highly of Beilein and Meyer and LaVall. I think yesterday's post game was bad by Crean. I trust the guys i talked to who were at the game, including those with Bluiett, and therefore I also believe Meyer acted out of character.

I don't post on football because I don't know as much know about it. Couldn't tell you a cover 2 from a cover 3 if i had to. I'm just a fan. But I know basketball. I played and coach it. So I can only comment on it.

I love MGoBlog. Love the writing and the community. Love what TVH brought on the recruiting front and that Ace is bringing it now. Sorry this perspective is bothering so many. I'll stop posting on it now.

I root for

IU in all sports, even football, except when they play Michigan.

Growing up in Novi, I'm also a huge fan of the Tigers, Red Wings, and Pistons. Still have my Alan Trammell jersey, my Chet Lemon autographs from the times he visited little league at Bosco Fields, my Wheaties box with Isiah, Joe D., Laimbeer, and others on it after 89. Hope that suffices for my Michigan fanhood. Lots of people have two teams that are dear to them for various reasons. I've seen multiple posters on here with 2 alliegances, like the Michigan and UVA guy.

What if

a Michigan student sells their student ticket to a non-student? Does it still apply? Just wondering. Either way, the IU fan should have expected it.

Doesn't change the fact

that there's 2 sides to this, but Crean is the one who comes out looking bad. No doubt about that.

You are right it's somewhat

about recruiting, negative that is.

I like Meyer and he's a good coach. Had quite a bit of interaction with him. But it's no secret around Indy that he continued to recruit Yogi and James Blackmon Jr. to Michigan after they both committed to IU, and that he told plenty of recruits IU was dead and never coming back, when he was one who had a role in bringing it down in the first place.

hee's some twitter stuff

but since it wasn't captured on video like Crean's, I doubt anthing will suffice as enough evidence for you.

Chronic Hoosier @ChronicHoosier

Earlier in the handshake line.... RT : Crean went to shake Meyer's hand, Meyer told him to go f-himself

Jeff Rabjohns @JeffRabjohns

Reports - unconfirmed so far - of what former Sampson ast Jeff Meyer did to kickstart Sunday's dustup with Crean.

My timestamp

says 8:41 and 8:42.

Lol

I honestly didn't remember signing up then, but it makes sense.

I am a fan of both schools. Sounds bandwagon, but I live and die by U of M football and IU basketball. Born in Ft. Wayne, raised in Novi. My family has season tix to the Big House through my dad's company. Grew up seeing games in the mid 80's to late 90's. But all my family is in Indiana, I went to IU, and live and coach hs and AAU (eric gordon all stars) basketball in Indy.

Dakich

does love Meyer though, and wasn't pleased with how Crean acted. I wish he would have been more professional. I understand there is tension between the two and a backstory, but it's not the time or place to hash that out.

sorry

double post

Crean was wrong to act like he did

Meyer told him to F off in the handshake line.

Crean responded by acting like a child, telling Meyer that he helped wreck IU's program and that he knew what he did.

Both were wrong, but Crean, as always, made a bigger show of it. As a fan of both schools, I don't lke what either did, but Crean will obviously make the headline as the head coach and bigger name.

No it isn't

At least not with the three guys mentioned.

IU never recruited Robinson excpet in a cursory way(they should have).

Iu recruited McGary, but there were red flags, and the only way they were going to take him was as an early enrollee in the 2011 class (his real HS class before prep).

And Irvin was recruited by IU and Purdue when he was a sophomore. IU and Purdue all offered Devin Davis, Collin Hartman, Basil Smotherman, and Irvin at the same time, and it was first come first serve. IU got the first 2 guys, Purdue got Smotherman, and Michigan made off like bandits with the best of the lot who waited it out. Irvin is a stud. As a HS coach in Indy, I can say Michigan is getting the best wing player in Indiana's 2013 class.

then also include the articles

where Roth says he was misquoted and had no issue with Crean, how he handled it, or IU. Crean could've been more forthright, certainly, but no one knows exactly what was said or not said.

and you're putting words in Roth's mouth by implying you knew what he was doing by retracting based on "knowing how things work." truth is we don't know, and maybe he was being genuine that he was misrepresented in the article.

Dude,

It's Michigan sources that are saying Meyer told Crean to go F himself, which prompted Crean to act like an idiot. Neither was right, but it's not all on one guy.

No one cares about a hand shake until their guy gets brushed off. No Big Ten coaches like each other, except ones from the same coaching tree. Maybe there's a mutual respect, but they all want to beat the crud out of each other.

Not true on Dak

He was director of basketball operations at IU, and then moved onto the bench after the Sampson stuff came out. He wasn't involved in recruiting or coaching until the fiasco.

What a cherry pick...

This board had an extensive thread on the Roth thing when it happened. Kid was at IU 5 years, got 2 degrees, and could've done the Brandon Wood thing to play right away. Most agreed it was nothing big and IU/Crean had fulfilled his obligation to the kid.

I didn't read the article you posted, but if i remember correctly, it's probably the one where he said Crean said keep his options open but that he hadn't heard from him on what to expect since. Never mind the fact that Roth went on the record later that same week to say he has taken out of context and has no hard feelings towards Crean. The same Roth who has been back to IU for several games this year. The same Roth who says he loves Crean and praises his former coach for the connections he has helped him towards in his professional life.

Thad Matta's

high school, the Hoopeston Corn Jerkers is always funny to me.

In Indiana, there are the Shoals Jug Rox, the Martinsville Artesians, the Eminence and Clay City Eels, the Andrean Fighting 59ers, the Delphi Oracles, Indianpolis Northwest Space Pioneers, Washington Hatchets (Cody Zeller), Jimtown Jimmies, Vincinnes Lincoln Alices (Curtis Painter), Speedway Sparkplugs, and the Frankfort Hot Dogs.

that kind of contact

above the shoulders ahould be an automatic flagrant 1. Not sure what the refs were looking at. Commentators seemed to think it was 2 or 3 call as well as looking at McGary's screen, and not the "punch." But they are usually just speculating on air.

To be fair...

He was also calling for Dawson's suspension for punching a Purdue player, Travis Carroll. I just think his radio show is all about controversy and ratings. He always rips on IU and Crean on the radio.

What?

How is Oladipo a dbag? One tasteless dunk and he's ajerk overall? Come one.

better look?

seems like an accident

Agree on the refs

But now all the talking heads (Seth Davis, Dakich) are out in force, calling for a review. GR3 just tweeted it was an accident, though.

it looks pretty bad

there's a gif of it at btown banners.

http://btownbanners.com/Forums/upload/index.php?/topic/615-keep-it-classy-um/?p=1796

Is anything going to happen to GR3

for (inadvertently????) punching Hulls in the face? At about the 3:25 mark of the second half. Dakich is going off on it now.

Seriously?

His first 3 years at IU he was fielding teams full on walk-ons, cast offs, and freshmen. Heck, there was a game in his first year where an IU baseball player and a team manager, Mike Santa, played meaningful minutes. I'd say IU's raod record in conference started mattering last season. If he flounders this year, it's a legit point. But busting his chops for losing games with Kyle Taber, Devan Dumes, Tijan Jobe, and those guys is ludicrous.

Ummm....

That 1-20 start can be at least partially attributed to Indiana's intensity and great defense to start the second half, no? It's not like UNC was just bricking wide open shots and missing bunnies. Credit where it's due, man...

Not true

You may hate the guy but get your facts rights. Most starters were out by 6 minutes, and all were out before the 4 minute mark. And Indiana's whole game is predicated on pushing the ball, so they're not gonna stop, especially if UNC is playing no defense.

Hulls played the most with 32 minutes and CZ played 28 minutes, but after that, a bench player (Sheehey) tallied the most time with 26 minutes. I don't think Zeller played the last 7-8 minutes.

Indiana could've scored 100 if they wanted to. As it was, the bench players and walkons finished up without scoring at all, maybe once, in the final 4 minutes. Plus, two of their top frontcourt players are still out, one with injury (Elston), one under suspension (Perea). The other freshman (Peter Jurkin.....) will hardly if ever play.

Irvin

Had 31 in his first game last night, 24 of them in the first half.

Irvin did have early offers from IU and Purdue. They both offered him, Collin Hartman (IU), Devin Davis (IU), and Basil Smotherman (PU) at nearly the same time, in a first-come first-served sort of way. I bet both IU and PU wishes they would've taken a different approach as Irvin is clearly the best of the 4 small forwards. Davis will be good for IU, but Hartman and especialy Smotherman are big stretches even as spot contributors on their respective teams.

Lol

Don't mean it like that. He's a nice enough player, but Michigan is building around athletic, high character kids. He doesn't fit that mold.

not trying to bash the kid

but not a great attitude, out of shape, undersized.

Bluiett is a great player. I

Bluiett is a great player. I coach against his team every year on Christmas break. It'll be nice not having to deal with Yogi Ferrell too this year, but Trevon is great in his own right. I've said for a while now I think he'll end up at Michigan. IU already has one commit in 2014 in SG James Blackmon, and I think they'll take 1 more Indiana kid (JaQuan Lyle) and look out east for big men.

As a coach in Indiana, you want no part of Tyler Wideman.

Also, Purdue fans think they've got Vince Edwards locked up, so nothing would make me happier than Michigan taking him. Painter has swung and missed on so many big recruits lately, it's almost funny. The Zellers, the Plumlees, Chasson Randle, Branden Dawson, Gary Harris, GR 3, Jeremy Hollowell, Bates-Diop, Derek Willis...the list goes on.
