Shoulda done this instead of Rutger/Maryland, but Texas probably needed some time with the Longhorn Network to see what they'll be giving up...

11/29/2018 - 7:53am Nope

Nope

11/26/2018 - 9:14am It's that kind of optimism…

It's that kind of optimism that made The Game extra painful.

11/26/2018 - 7:18am Brian sure seemed annoyed…

Brian sure seemed annoyed with Seth on this one, even more than usual. I guess it was the wrong day for extended tangents.

11/26/2018 - 6:38am Thoughts drifted back to…

Thoughts drifted back to this as well. However, two caveats:

1. There's a lot more time to prepare for a bowl game.

2. Michigan had already done a lot of varied formations this year. So the gameplan needed to shift in more subtle ways, without such a significant element of surprise.

I don't disagree with the overall sentiment. Needed to make those subtleties more profound. Or just make them in the first place as they were not very evident.

11/26/2018 - 6:36am Totally agree. Gus is just a…

Totally agree. Gus is just a showman. Seemed like Klatt deftly corrected course a number of times during this game, but when Johnson's praising Meyer as the great redeemed one, kind of hard to do anything with that.

11/26/2018 - 6:34am I don't know how you found…

I don't know how you found the energy to put this one together, BronxBlue, but well done. Your sentiments reflect mine and probably a wide swath of Michigan fans. I didn't think I would wake up Sunday feeling down, because in the aftermath of the game, I was a bit more ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ than anything else. However, I woke up in a sour mood, and stayed that way. And rightly so. We have to wait another year for a crack at these guys. I can't help but feel that a ton of time and emotional energy put into this season was somewhat wasted. Of course, then I think about how the players and coaches must feel, and I quickly realize nobody should care about me (and nor should I - sunk cost and all that).

The game was not closer than the score indicated, but the teams are not that far apart. Michigan knew what was at stake, but perhaps this is just another level-up on the way. The "Revenge Tour" next year can focus on just one team, and maybe that will work out better. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

11/25/2018 - 6:54am And they preserved some key…

And they preserved some key redshirts this year. Part of the reason we’re in this mess was an inability to do so in the past.

11/23/2018 - 3:14am Fantastic!

Hey. what was…

Fantastic!

Hey. what was that brief clip at the end, Michigan #20 scuffling with a dude in a white long-sleeve t-shirt near the tunnel entrance? I'd never seen that one before.

11/21/2018 - 7:22am I can't see the charts…

I can't see the charts either. Perhaps you can post screencaps in the comments?

11/19/2018 - 4:33am Welcome back BronxBlue…

Welcome back BronxBlue. Indeed I was wondering where you had been, and glad that it's only a minor injury. (Hopefully Chase will be on the injured list even less time than you were.)

Lice - that song was horrific. And also took me back to three weeks ago. In the morning I threw my back out while unloading my kiddos at school. Midday we get an e-mail from my 4yo daughter's school that there's an outbreak in her class. When I pick her up the teacher tells me she's infected. So, barely able to walk, I have to take both kids to the pharmacy to get the goop, then apply said goop before bathing them both. The 2yo hates having his hair washed, and I could hardly move the entire time. Just a confluence of crap. But, the treatment worked, and my back improved over the following three days, and has now returned to being merely "nagging." Anyway, good metaphor. I have learned to dislike lice, but there are far worse demons in the nursery.

Totally agree on "just spike the ball." Harbaugh's comment was that they had the play they thought would work and be in the endzone. Perhaps they assumed the first down run would have gotten them closer to the goalline than it did. If so, that's a pretty shaky assumption. You've got the downs, just spike it. Furthermore, he said the were going to spike on 2nd down after McKeon's catch. Even if the ref got the ball in place efficiently without the IU kick, I think it would have hit zero on the spike. Just silly.

But hey, screw around all you want with Indiana in a still resounding win if it means getting it out of your system before the next four games. THAT'S RIGHT I SAID FOUR GAMES.

For now: The Game The Game The Game

11/18/2018 - 6:10pm It seemed like the crowd…

It seemed like the crowd raised its intensity significantly after Winovich went out, and especially after the subsequent personal foul by the same player.

For those in the building was that the sense of the moment? It felt like a huge push to me, just watching the broadcast.

11/16/2018 - 9:12am A lot depends on the last…

A lot depends on the last name to pair with the first names. Also the names of the other kiddos.

I'd go with Woodson and Wheatley. Won't seem obvious to their peers as both are already retired.

Thanks to Hoke, Brady is no longer feasible.

11/16/2018 - 9:00am Great post JoeyB. You have…

Great post JoeyB. You have objectively pulled in a ton of useful details.

In my opinion, "deserve's got everything to do with it." Because regardless of rankings, eye test, game control, or whatever other criteria one prefers, all of that may end up being wrong when the teams actually play. None of it is an exact science, and all of it faces major sample size challenges. There are 129 teams in FBS, and they don't all play one another. Choosing the four best must inherently mean the most deserving because anything else is just a hypothetical based on shaky analysis.

It's complicated enough to value what "deserving" means, but at least it values actual results, not feelings or guesses.

My take (from happier times in Piscataway): http://roadgames07.blogspot.com/2007/10/arthur-dimmesdale-needs-good-flogging.html

Hopefully some of these logistics have improved. Too bad the stadium is not on their main campus, which is worth a visit.

11/11/2018 - 1:19am While one never knows what’s…

While one never knows what’s true about Harbaugh’s injury comments, I beleive he later reentered the game in the second half last week.

11/06/2018 - 4:04am Pretty amazing that this guy…

Pretty amazing that this guy can write with such passion and objectivity about a hated rival, especially doing so every week.

11/06/2018 - 3:38am Interesting in my opinion.

Interesting in my opinion.

You should send it to Joel Klatt for his next rant.

11/06/2018 - 3:32am Yes, I agree. I was…

Yes, I agree. I was listening to the Northwestern game via the radio and it was not helpful in understanding what was happening on the field, which is kind of the point of a radio play-by-play. (I grew up on Wayne Larrivee doing Bears games in Chicago, and even as a kid I knew he was fantastic at his job. He painted the picture before every play, and kept pace with the action.)

[The only thing that I grew to like was Jon Jansen repeatedly saying "It's so FRUSTRating!" every time Michigan got a penalty or other similar mistake. At first, I was greatly put off by this kind of comment. He's supposed to provide insight, not his feelings, But then it quickly became endearing in a comical way.]

11/05/2018 - 2:34pm One could argue that this…

One could argue that this team is blowing up the #M00N, or at least ensuring that it is now merely a memory from the bad old days.

For me the marcus hall epic double bird of the week was Black’s TD getting (justifiably) called back.

HE WILL GET ANOTHER CHANCE!

Wolverine Historian. A wonderful soul who has curated oodles of Michigan highlights an put them up on youtube:

Thanks as always for these, WD! A huge help for me living abroad where I often cannot see the games live.

11/04/2018 - 4:32am One thought in my mind was…

One thought in my mind was that if they had come into The Game 11-0, they would have felt less pressure to address their problems. That may be irrelevant if they cannot put away Nebraska even after Purdue plus a week off.

11/04/2018 - 3:53am Then he went and completely…

Then he went and completely blew up the KO return.

11/03/2018 - 12:48pm Wow that is indeed shady…

Wow that is indeed shady. Our guy just said "Do you think you could go and sell a product you believe in?" They let everyone start, but never tried to be sneaky about that. (Our guy was a very lousy manager, and he ended up getting moved or fired soon after because the team didn't perform.)

11/03/2018 - 8:52am I sold Cutco the summer…

I sold Cutco the summer after my senior year of high school, with an attitude rather similar to Raj’s friend. While the company’s marketing is based on a bit of a scammy approach (get young adults to sell cutlery to their friends’ parents and their parents’ friends), I must defend them a bit here.

1. Aside from the overly optimistic hourly wage advetisements, they were honest about the expectations. You have to buy the sales kit (somewhat discounted). You start at only 10% comission, but sell enough and hang in there and it grows all the way up to 50%. (Very few hang in there, but again, they’re clear about the rules.)

2. The job made few requirements on my time. One or two team meetings per week. This was perfect for an 18 year old during summer.

3. I did gain skills which continue to help me 25 years later.

4. The knives are good. That sales kit is still pretty much all we use in my home to this day. A good investment on its own.

Why do I mention this? Raj’s attack on my long-ago employer now has me worried that Michigan will lose. That’s totally irrational. (Kind of like assuming cutting pennies in half make for a good sales pitch. Raj makes some good points.)

Why yes of course I'm clicking on Devin Bush first.

Thanks for sharing!

11/01/2018 - 11:06am If Michigan loses to Alabama…

If Michigan loses to Alabama in the semi-final, I'll still come away very satisfied with the season, even if it's approaching a blowout. I realize that is aside from the point of the OP. But my point is making the Playoff is a key next step in the progress of the program. Therefore, better to ensure a clear path and no risks of 1-loss Alabama and LSU-or-UGA SEC champion both ahead of UM.

10/31/2018 - 4:32am It kind of doesn't matter,…

It kind of doesn't matter, then. If ND wins out, they are above UM. If they lose one game, they are (perhaps) still above UM, depending on what that loss is. If they lose two, they are out. So it's not really worth worrying about. Assume they win out, and it means UM has to be among the remaining three teams. If they lose one game, that (perhaps) doesn't change. If they lose two, hooray another spot.

10/25/2018 - 2:23pm Do whatever they did in 1999…

Do whatever they did in 1999 except the exact opposite.

10/25/2018 - 11:15am I think the theory is more…

I think the theory is more about overall team fatigue than injuries. People get injured in practice (or punching coffee tables), so that can also happen in any game. If the whole team is tired a week after a bruising game and then has to hit the road, that’s almost a double whammy.

10/22/2018 - 2:52am Great work, BronxBlue!

Great work, BronxBlue!

re: stubbing toes - this is part and parcel of college football. Even Nick Saban’s Alabama teams only have one undefeated season.

Along those lines, Michigan left a ton of potential points on the field in these last two games. I am not complaining about that. On one hand, it shows that the ceiling is yet higher. But also if balls had bounced differently, there was the chance for either to have been one of “those” games.

This team is tough as nails and doesn’t turtle. Hopefully they can approach that ceiling in this last third of the season. Regardless, they’re a joy to watch.

10/21/2018 - 5:48pm I wonder - he had a newborn…

I wonder - he had a newborn baby during last season. Having recently exited that phase myself, it's pretty damn exhausting. (Of course, my 2yo is a feral animal, so things remain exhausting here.) Just an idea.

10/21/2018 - 5:44pm So fun, though!

The game…

So fun, though!

The game ends and his comment is (to my recollection): "Michigan celebrates like they won the Super Bowl. And they have gotten their third win in the last 11 years in the series." Hahahahaha.

10/20/2018 - 10:23am I think anything greater…

I think anything greater than six teams is a bad idea. Would cause more harm than good. I’m glad we have four because the “promise” of the BCS was never possible. I’m happy with how things are.

10/20/2018 - 3:33am He’s a professional ass. …

He’s a professional ass.  But I guess it pays the bills. Can’t wait for kickoff!

10/20/2018 - 3:32am There’s no way I can get…

There’s no way I can get this done thanks to the two small people in my house who demand constant attention. But I enjoyed the story! Will see about returning to this recipe once they are no longer trying to murder one another...

10/16/2018 - 4:02pm I immediately tried to check…

I immediately tried to check Michigan/Nebraksa 1997, but alas it doesn’t go back that far.

10/16/2018 - 2:03pm In hindsight, is Devin Bush…

In hindsight, is Devin Bush the most important recruit of the Harbaugh era? Solomon, Gary, DPJ, Bredeson, and Ruiz were all very highly ranked (Bush was #312), but between beating out FSU for a Seminole legacy, his impact on the play of the defense, and the ability to recruit in his image, I cannot think of anyone who’s (so far) brought the program so much.

10/15/2018 - 7:00am Still impressed that you are…

Still impressed that you are able to pump these out with consistency given the age of your children (roughly the same as mine - I barely have time to read these!).

Well done!

10/15/2018 - 3:49am I still love this girl.

I still love this girl.

10/07/2018 - 3:39pm I have assumed he is a…

I have assumed he is a likely departure all along, and the fact that he is playing well only reinforces that. The biggest reason to stay could, in the end, be the fact that the OL is playing well and most (should) return. We'll see...

10/07/2018 - 2:40am It doesn’t matter.

It doesn’t matter.

09/25/2018 - 4:26pm McCurry had a superb block…

McCurry had a superb block on the punt return as well. Had a chance to take out a chaser and instead ran ahead about 10 yards that allowed DPJ to put his on his moves and reach paydirt.

09/24/2018 - 10:27am Congrats! You have some time…

Congrats! You have some time. Just try to implement an in advance moratorium on Peppa Pig before it's too late. She's the worst. (My 4yo has moved on to Curious George, thankfully.)

09/04/2018 - 10:37am Watched today, as I also…

Watched today, as I also couldn't watch live. What I saw was significantly better than expected based on all the taeks. Yes, OTs are a huge issue that will derail the season if not somehow fixed.

I will say that this team fought to recover like last year's never did. (Winovich also addressed this in his post-game comments.) McKeon fumble vs MSU, Peters getting KO'd vs Wisconsin, pick dropped vs OSU, Hidgon fumble in the bowl game - after all of these moments, the team seemed to crumble. There were many similar moments in this one, and they didn't collapse.

Yes, they need to start winning more of these opportunities. But the game was nowhere near as bad as people are making it out to be. ND is not a superb team, but if this game were at home, I imagine it all would have flipped. Let's see.

09/04/2018 - 4:31am Same old Braylon...

What…

Same old Braylon...

What about when he dropped a pass on 4th down, ending the game vs OSU?

What about when he booted a pass into the arms of a USC linebacker?

Despite some fantastic moments, he was never perfect on the field (and generally quite far from perfect off of it). This is what galls me most about his attitude.

09/04/2018 - 4:19am FWIW in his presser Harbaugh…

FWIW in his presser Harbaugh agreed with you about the hurry-up being problematic and that they would address it.

09/02/2018 - 2:01pm it’s in the presser…

it’s in the presser transcript currently first on the main page. Peters had a “tweaked knee.”
