I appreciate

I appreciate the pedantry, but I appreciate May scouting European basketball even more

I heard someone say this…

I heard someone say this week “you don’t want to be the guy after the guy, you want to be the guy after the guy after the guy.” I know football coaches with egos don’t think like that, but we’re about to see if that holds true in this instance.

I feel the same way. I was…

I feel the same way. I was 100% “he’s leaving” until this moment and now I’m like, “Well, if he knew he was leaving, he might say something less equivocal, like ‘I will always love Michigan’ or something….” Hope is a dangerous thing.

The contrast between the…

The contrast between the team I see throwing up 6-5 and the villain in the media is … stark.

To add what’s maybe an…

To add what’s maybe an unpopular opinion these days: if I were 19 years old and had a legitimate shot at the NBA, it would be very difficult for me to reject the siren song of “hero ball” in favor of a team-first approach. As a fan, I much prefer the ball this team is playing. As Jett/Caleb/Hunter/Kobe, I’d almost certainly choose to get mine. So no shade to them.

What I think we’ve seen repeatedly is the best college teams have a mix of selfless stars and veteran leadership. Guys in the top 100 recruits but not at the very top are some of the most attractive. With Nimari (38) and Tarris (40), we have a couple of those guys. A bunch of other guys were just outside the top 100. Let’s hope the good times keep rolling.

Although I believe KBJ… Although I believe KBJ recused herself. I think she has some deeper connection to Harvard—-maybe serving on a board?
Yes, the appearance of…

Yes, the appearance of impropriety and “actual” impropriety are essentially the same, for purposes of recusal. Judges must consider how a reasonable observer would perceive the situation, and if that observer could think it looks bad, the judge should recuse.

A minor detail I enjoyed:…

A minor detail I enjoyed: Nimari looked aggressive on the boards. I see he, in reality, only had five, but it felt to me like he was getting to the right spot all night. If he can be a guy who provides solid shooting and does those little things, what a great pickup for this team.

This logic is questionable…

This logic is questionable. Kansas could be mistaken, could be desperate, or what I think is most likely, could ask Hunter to play a different role. I tend to think many Michigan fans would agree—if you can appeal to authority, I can chime in with my own logical fallacy—that Hunter was not good for us last year. If he can find a better fit with KU, more power to him.

Hasn’t there occasionally…

Hasn’t there occasionally been talk of a Liga MX/MLS merger? That league would be so unwieldy that relegation would almost have to happen. Now to persuade a top-flight club that it’s actually a second-division one in the new arrangement!

I’m only now working my way…

I’m only now working my way through the Revolutions podcast series on the French Revolution, so these Girondin references have been a surprising and delightful confluence of interests

Is Jordan Poole’s…

Is Jordan Poole’s performance under Beilein even relevant to our offense now? If not, I won’t tell Peterson.

I say I want more analysis,…

I say I want more analysis, but then when I watch coach’s room broadcasts I feel like they’re a little over my head. Ideally you’d have someone like DG who can marry both approaches and convey the analysis to the casual-plus fan.

I will choose to believe the…

I will choose to believe the alum was a locked-in Franz and not, say, a bored Stauskas.

I have to imagine, re:…

I have to imagine, re: Calipari, “Come be a campus god for a year, I won’t tell you how to play, and then I’ll do everything in my power to make sure you make the league,” is a compelling pitch to some people.

I’ll be very curious to hear…

I’ll be very curious to hear about Orfeo. The Overstory blew me away so much I added a bunch of Richard Powers to my TBR but thus far have only read Bewilderment (also incredible).

I just started reading Dilla…

I just started reading Dilla Time, about J Dilla, today. It’s engrossing and I imagine would be of interest to many on this board, given the Detroit connection.

This is one that never gets…

This is one that never gets listed when this topic comes up, but if you love a certain brand of loud rock, I think Japandroids’ album Post-Nothing is perfect. It follows the Illmatic rule of “short, but every song is amazing.” OP if you like Titus Andronicus I’d imagine you’ve heard of it already, anybody else in this thread who likes big riffs and distortion will be entertained.

My understanding is that…

My understanding is that South Carolina is the team to beat this year, but (a) obviously Missouri found a way, and (b) they aren’t at that Candace Parker TN or Breanna Stewart UConn level you’re thinking of. Obviously Aliyah Boston is no joke, but we have Naz Hillmon.

If he leaves Memphis, plays…

If he leaves Memphis, plays in the g league or overseas for a year, and then goes on to a long, productive career in the NBA, is he a recruiting bust? It’s a little different from the usual scenario where talent identification is off. If you define bust as “the school that recruited him didn’t get their money’s worth,” then yes, but if you define it like “he was not as talented as we thought,” it’s too soon to tell. Thus ends my lunch-break musing.

Had to upvote for the NBA…

Had to upvote for the NBA joke. My girlfriend and I have a running bit that the only reason I’m not there right now is because I have yet to “declare” for the draft. But once I declare that I’m eligible (and grow a foot, develop some coordination, get significantly stronger, improve my shot, alleviate the pain in my hip that won’t let me stay in a defensive stance for very long, etc…) I’m in!

As a Bears fan, the idea of…

As a Bears fan, the idea of profiting off another franchise’s boneheaded decision is novel but appealing.

Who is to the left of…

Who is to the left of Anthony? I can’t make out the number

The talk with his family…

The talk with his family couldn’t have been that long.

My personal favorite Poe…

My personal favorite Poe story is The Cask of Amontillado. Poll question for the group: would you rather spend Saturday getting passed-out drunk with your friend, knowing that he would eventually entomb you in the walls of his basement; or watch the game?

I love this tidbit! It’s…

I love this tidbit! It’s always nice to hear the most talented players are also good human beings.

I’m not sure “Jordan Morgan worked his ass off” is really news, though. We all saw it. ?

The Falck TD, especially,…

The Falck TD, especially, had me thinking we should steal that play.

My understanding is these…

My understanding is these were an Ace feature, Ace is no longer with the site, Ace is doing OFAAT at his new site, which is called The Bucket Problem.

Has off-season golf become…

Has off-season golf become the new weight gain? All off-season golf is good because it promotes team bonding and relaxation, unless we learn later this particular off-season golf was bad.

Seth, can I ask what the…

Seth, can I ask what the plan is for next week? I love preview week every year…but I fear for your sanity. Guest writers? Reduced content? Pain?

Grew up an MSU fan because…

Grew up an MSU fan because of family and proximity, enrolled in UM for other reasons, walked into the stadium for my first game just before the start of freshman year. That’s when I got hooked.

I thought this too but when…

I thought this too but when I looked it seemed like he’s only really had one truly elite class, and that was the one with Wiseman, who was promptly ruled ineligible. This Duren/Bates class will be an important proving ground, though.

Ty Rodgers is 66th. Credit to the other post for informing me.

The number of teams blacked…

The number of teams blacked out in my area on mlb.tv is absurd. And of course it’s every team anyone in my area might conceivably cheer for.

At this point there should…

At this point there should just be a sticky thread titled “I am concerned about recruiting” where these thoughts can live.

Former undergrad tour guide…

Former undergrad tour guide here. The tour we gave was a circle around central campus starting at the student activities building (by the cube). In one direction it went: Union, law quad, south U (nod to clements and cook), ugli, chem 100, north u/geddes, diag, Angell, state street, back to start. I could be missing a stop or two as it’s been a number of years, but that’s a decent starting point. I think, for example, we had a demo dorm room set up in west quad, but I’m guessing you won’t be able to see the dorms on your own. If you have time I’d look around the hill both for the med school/life sciences institute and for the dorms. And of course I’d always recommend families check out Main Street and Kerrytown, and the athletic facilities if that was of interest, which I assume applies to you.

Totally agree. They have…

Totally agree. They have some songs I think are amazing (Long December, Daylight Fading, Einstein on the Beach) and some songs or really just some individual lyrics I think are among the worst  (“Gray is my favorite color,” “Omaha—somewhere in middle America”).

A theme here, but I cannot…

A theme here, but I cannot stand Weezer’s “Island in the Sun” or the Beatles’ “Here Comes the Sun.” Although now I’m wondering how much I love Weezer if I only ever listen to two albums.

I’ll bite: how would you…

I’ll bite: how would you characterize this post if not as a “hype” post?

I want to see the demure…

I want to see the demure Joker performance he’s searching for, though. Maybe a Michael Cera? Someone has to portray this psychopathic comic book character the way the people want!

The Nigerian woman is…

The Nigerian woman is Blessing Okagbare. Her time was faster but the wind at her back was above the maximum allowed so it doesn’t count as “wind legal.” I believe Okagbare is the second fastest woman ever “in all conditions.”

I was curious. But not more…

I was curious. But not more curious.

This thread made me sad, RIP…

This thread made me sad, RIP Daryl. But we have similar podcast tastes — is blowback “a podcast about the American empire”? I’ll have to check it out. You might also like 5-4 or Behind the Bastards.

I respect the thoughtfulness…

I respect the thoughtfulness, but I still think they’ll take Cade. When the choice was Melo or Darko, Melo was thought to be redundant with Rip. So they take Darko and never hear the end of it. Safer optics, safer choice, trade Killian if you need to: take Cade.

The 2026 World Cup is being…

The 2026 World Cup is being hosted jointly by the US, Canada, and Mexico. Most of the matches will be played in the US. That is also when this current generation of talented youngsters projects to be in their primes. I would say the optimistic take on USMNT development is that the team should both perform well at that tournament and spur more growth in the sport, like the ‘94 World Cup did. “Perform well,” though, doesn’t mean “win the whole thing.” It probably means something like advance out of the group stage and win at least one knockout game. Without double checking, I believe that would be the best finish for the US since 2002. That may not sound like much, but it’s a realistic goal.

Of course there’s a whole World Cup cycle in between now and then, which will affect expectations. Some of these players won’t pan out. Some will get injured. Other players will emerge. Etc.

To add to this defense of…

To add to this defense of the, uh, defense, while there’s no doubt McKenzie was poor yesterday, it was also his second(?) competitive match with the USMNT and his first match against Mexico. Those are new levels. To not put his head down after his first minute or his first forty-five minutes shows some resiliency and you can find room for optimism there.

Just wanted to say thank you…

Just wanted to say thank you for this. There was a Reddit thread on the Koepka video and when someone asked for backstory, another person asked if they had been living under a rock. I didn’t think I was living under a rock for not following golf drama, but with your help I can get out from under this rock.

As a Michigan fan, I’m on board with this level of salt. As a Bears fan, the one exception is Justin Fields.
