05/10/2018 - 5:37pm Wha?

Honey this is not large demand in 2017 the requests were half what they had been two years previously. It was small supply (fewer non renewals).

05/04/2018 - 11:58pm Nope

Neither Harvard nor Stanford has an undergraduate business major.

05/04/2018 - 11:57pm Just FYI

Chicago does NOT have an undergrad business program. I am a fan of NOT doing an undergrad bus degree although I am currently in Ross faculty.

04/01/2018 - 9:51pm I’m in for Crisler

Seth you really have? I have an mCard but since I have been on faculty twenty years I can no longer pass as a student.

03/28/2018 - 9:09pm You should ASSUME people are reading your stuff on-line

This type of data is entirely commonly collected, it's out there in the public airwaves, so I don't think it counts as spying (which would suggest investigation of things people understood as private).  It IS creepy as hell, but it's not spying, if people let anyone follow them on Twitter and post so that those anyones can see it.

If you are on twitter, you are doing that too.

I would point out however, that $500,000 for that kind of reporting is KRAZY.  We have dashboards at Ross that will allow you to do that kind of data capture for yourself, and the entire B!G could have what we have, and it still would not be a half million.  The cost is having someone summarize it in detail, manually, and that is not only creepy as hell but also lazy as hell.  There is nothing special about those data except the price tag.

03/26/2018 - 6:18pm I looked, and I used the search function

So let’s have a look at that. What more could I do?

I am not asking just rhetorically, I mean if eyeball and formal search don’t work, your suggestion, while valid, leads to “never post any news.”

03/25/2018 - 7:55pm Fri is a low HUT night

“Homes using television” - for in home viewing at least, Friday is maybe the weakest night of the week in terms of the audience size. I don’t think that’s changed in a couple of generations. People got places to go on Fridays even in 2018.

03/09/2018 - 11:17pm Hot hand is a documented myth

Although statisticians like to argue about this, it is profoundly true that people (not just sports fans) regularly perceive sequences where only random variance exists:

03/06/2018 - 5:56pm What?

No it’s not. That was last week dudeZ. Really why are all those people in my classroom when they could be in Cancun.

01/11/2018 - 1:33pm I love this place

It's not even 3 hours, and Ace has almost reached his goal.  Keep it up, everyone!

01/09/2018 - 9:50pm Keep the faith

I hope you can find some of the benefit your dad has found. You are much loved all around the MGoWorld.

11/20/2017 - 11:10pm Would y’all really give up our key rivalries...

...to make this happen? Think we would get on OSU’s schedule Thanksgiving week as an independent?

10/12/2017 - 1:06pm Bloomington native says:

Bars:  Upland Brewing on 11st St,  not far from Stadium.  If you are willing to drive south 15 minutes try the Scenic View - near/overlooking a reservoir, more of a roadhouse ambience.  Newer places include Big Woods and Function Brewing and Trappers.  Trapper is a little further from campus so might be less jammed.

Breakfast:  Try the Uptown on Kirkwood.  Great pancakes and home fries.

Food:  There is a whole block of crazy ethnic places built into old houses on 4th Street west of Kirkwood.  I recommend Little Tibet for the momo dumplings.

09/20/2017 - 1:19pm Only it doesn't always work that way...

As you are not including financial aid in your recommendation.  In a third or more cases, even in-state students at UM pay more than their families would at Harvard, moreover Harvard's aid comes in the form of grants and scholarships rather than loans.

If I had to choose between getting out of UM with some loans and getting out of Harvard without them, I would not pick UM.

09/19/2017 - 5:57pm Ross faculty here

Ross BBA is a very good program but it's pretty different than being an econ major at private liberal-arts type colleges.  We run them through lots of practical exercises and there are fewer opportunities to branch out into side disciplines; you can do econ and sociology, perhaps, at Brown, but not easily at Ross.  On the other hand, by the time you graduate Ross you will be excruciatingly experienced at working in groups, business writing, analysis, interviewing, etc.

Having been in both environments, I always feel that,  if there is not a huge $ difference, you should always go to the best school that will have you.  In many cases that will be Michigan, even if not Ross.  The really hard skills to find in employees these days are people skills and critical thinking skills.  Analytical skills of many sorts risk being replaced by some dude with a fancy algorithm.

Downside risk of Ross:  if he doesn't like it, it is harder to change to something else.  It's a hard culture to break way from.  It is pretty intense and the students, although enthused to be here, do experience a lot of stress.

Remember that some % of the entering class opts into Ross at the END of freshman year - if your kid isn't sure, he can take a year to explore, make sure he has key Ross pre-reqs (mostly calc and econ), and then make a judgment call.

EDITED TO ADD:  If you are wondering about the practicality of an Ivy degree, I should just point out that I have a comparative religion undergraduate degree from Harvard, and yet ended up a business professor.  It's sounds like a sure recipe for unemployment but it wasnt.  ALSO, in many cases it is cheaper to go to one of the better-funded Ivies than to UM, since most of them cover full financial need WITHOUT LOANS, so you get out of your undergrad without debt.  I don't know for sure if this is the case at Brown but I suspect so.

09/14/2017 - 8:03pm Why

Would a coach go back to a team just because he liked a particular player? He likes a lot of folks. Luck is six years into a career and he's not super healthy. It would be odd to make a decision just for Luck.

09/03/2017 - 4:15pm Must be why the Big House is so damn empty

It's like an apocalyptic movie in there. Clearly nobody is interested in the sport.

09/01/2017 - 4:23pm But Stanford

Will still compromise its academic standards, in fact the coaches have more pull at Stanford than elsewhere. As I understand it, several hundred early decision spots are reserved for athletes.

09/01/2017 - 4:19pm Puréed.

Then used as lawn fertilizer.

08/31/2017 - 2:14pm Yes and....

If you have not already purchased your own seats, I can highly recommend seats as high as possible in the SW sections, 18-19 and the like.

Rationale: there is a family bathroom up there that is rarely occupied. You can go from "daddy I need diaper" to back in your seat in a single time out or just one-two plays.

The upper concourse is a good dogrun for one parent to chase squirmy toddler around without messing with crowds. Likewise the food vendor lines up there are not too bad.

If you are in row 93 or above you will have shade from the very beginning even if it's a noon game. If it rains and you are that high you will mostly stay dry.

08/04/2017 - 10:34pm When?

I don't see it in my speedyscroll through the responses, but Yosemite park itself books up even a year in advance. If you can't find a place to stay in the park itself try near the South Gate (Tenaya Lodge for example) but expect to pay $$$$. Don't leave SF for Yosemite without a place to stay booked. If you stay out of the park wake up prior to the crack of down to get to the valley floor. It's like Manhattan traffic down there sometimes

07/08/2017 - 10:12am Peter Gomes

He taught "Formative Elements of the Western Church" and was the preacher in the college's church. Best role model anyone could have. I was so keen to do well in his class I made a deck of early Christian heresy flash cards. and when I got an "A" on the 3-hour essay exam final (A's used to be really hard), I was at last confident I belonged at the Uz

Google him!

06/18/2017 - 11:03am They put a lot of work into their house

Down the street from us. Too bad they will not have the luxury of time to enjoy it. Good neighbors!

06/14/2017 - 12:54pm That's a move Staee would make

But not Michigan. We can do better than recruit people with known character flaws (charges or not aside).

Tasteless grain mush that is a staple in Uganda. We got very sick on that trip.

04/06/2017 - 4:21pm Just starts the fouling festival three minutes early

So imagine we're up 61-60 at 3:00.  The target is now 68 points.  Suddenly its 66 all and your opponent has possession of the ball.  So what do you do?  You foul them and hope that they don't get both free throws.  Then what do they do to you?  The same.

I don't see how this would change the incentives at the end of the game at all actually.

03/21/2017 - 10:44am In Ann Arbor?

Fresh duck breast maybe had at Sparrows Market in Kerrytown.

Easy and fantastic method

1) preheat oven to maybe 400

2) score duck breasts on fatty skin side (make light hash marks with a knife but don't cut all the way through to the flesh

3) heat a cast iron skillet on the stove

4) Place the duck breast skin down: salt lightly. Cool for six minutes. The skin will get brown and crisp.

5) Flip the breasts to skin side up and put the entire skillet in the heated oven for another six minutes. Remove

6) if you fear they are not quite done enough, let them rest for a couple more minutes outside the oven.

Don't forget to save the rendered duck fat to fry potatoes or what have you.

This is the easiest thing ever and man oh man is it good.

03/20/2017 - 6:02pm Wait if knight is scummy

Then his former players are scummy 4ever? Particularly because the coaches after these players left might also have been a little sketch?

Is that really your argument.

03/18/2017 - 5:35pm This.

I am puzzled by the frequency with which posters here are willing to ditch a player or coach without even considering whether the replacement is more likely to do better. Case in point the No-more-Beilein sentiment from earlier this season which for the most part was bereft of suggestions of 1) who would be better that 2) we could actually get.

03/14/2017 - 9:31pm Lots of nonsense from Comcast

Many phone calls. It finally regenerated last night. Sensible people will call and insist on a refund

03/12/2017 - 9:44am Ours came back last night

I think (!), as we had to decamp to Detroit when it got too cold. Neighbors say we are good to return. Hope you are warm soon!

02/28/2017 - 8:11pm Your coworker is an early bird

Sister Pie stayed up all night making'm and sold out in 41 minutes.

02/28/2017 - 11:52am It's a long list

Dorm crew, dishwasher, grounds crew, benefits assistant, assistant on a radio show, cashier in a drive-in movie theater, secretarial temp, box office assistant, light crew, assistant stage manager, script typist, self-employed typist, props mistress, babysitter

Grad school: business editor of a literary magazine, housesitter, kitchen staff at a wine bar, transcriptionist, graduate assistant grading exams,

I know I am forgetting some. The cashier at a drive in was the worst paid ($1.10 an hour) with the worst hours (7 nights a week), and the worst job conditions (in a swamp with no A/C).

02/25/2017 - 7:11pm Congratulations!

To you and your wife, your new little man, and his already marvelous big sister.

02/09/2017 - 1:19pm Oh the tears of the merchants,

If you dont know who's playing, you cant or wont make travel plans, at least until the very last minute.,

If you cant or wont make travel plans until the very last minute, you are less likely to come, because a) it's more expensive b) you may already be booked

If you cant or wont make travel plans and in the end don't come, that's bad for the team (because potentially smaller attendance); that's bad for fans (because they don't get the experience),  but also you can expect massive resistance from the local econom(ies).

etc etc

02/05/2017 - 11:56pm Morales?

A two star from a while back? Can't remember the position I don't think he ever played though

01/30/2017 - 3:17pm Ivy League does not have athletic scholarships

And generally not merit awards either.  It's pure financial need all the way up and down the ladder. The biggest benefit of Ivy money is that many schools do not provide loans but essentially all grant money, so you get out of school without any meaningful debt.  I am not 100% sure that Columbia plays it this way but I believe they do.

So the financial implications of moving from Columbia to Michigan are unknown, but Columbia's package is likely more lucrative and not dependent on playing ball.

So if the motivation is not financial, it could be something else.  For example, if he wanted to be a business major (Ivies don't have them, except Penn and possibly Cornell), or some other curricular reason.

01/18/2017 - 4:56pm In other news

We had a huge lead over Rutgers, but it wasn't by very many points.

Michael Phelps was an entire pool length ahead of his nearest rival, but squeaked out a victory

MR SOLOMON WE LOVE YOU AND WANT YOU TO PLAY FOOBALL HERE, BUT HOW CAN THE MARGIN BE CLOSE IF BAMA'S LEAD IS BIG.

Love ya see ya next fall

12/23/2016 - 11:00pm I was in that one!

Negative 20 , almost; driving with my two sibs from Chicago to Bloomington Indiana. Car started to slooooow way down just past merilllville. Pulled over at a service station and hitched a ride back to a model in merillcilld where the three of us got a room in one of those two story motels with no internal halls. The pipes started to freeze at the far end of the hall and they kept moving us down the row of rooms one room at a time. I don't remember if we got any food. The next day Christmas my dad drove up and rescued us but the car was stuck in northern Indiana for a good long while.

12/22/2016 - 3:36pm Daughter's in but

She is an Ann Arbor kid and intends to go someplace where she can't run into her parents on the street.

She is not my sports fan either :(

12/06/2016 - 10:58am Snow Angels at the Indiana game

It was so beautiful up there in row 93, the lights made the soft snowflakes shine and shine  My nephew came up from Texas to see it, a sustained offensive drive (even though scoreless), everyone was in such a good mood - cheerleaders making snow angels, snow coming down so fast they had to do it multiple times.

And then the players bellyflopping through the snow ;)

10/28/2016 - 11:09pm That's not how it works bro

Really your thoughts about the game do not impact it play. If you're worried about it stay off the internet until January.

10/05/2016 - 8:10pm Mostly I'd like to meet your

Mostly I'd like to meet your dad actually. He sounds awesome. My dad was in Korea as well.

10/02/2016 - 12:36am Dude

Is it not the case that it has been 8 years or more since we defeated a top 10 team? You can wait for Muppets once a decade if you WANT, but I just want to...

DANCE....!!!!!

09/22/2016 - 3:44pm Because for sure it is worse

Please everybody take a basic stats course before you gamble.

08/31/2016 - 1:04pm Well thanks goodness because ADELE

I have a football fan kid and a ponies-and-rainbows-and-SINGING kid.  Weds 9th I must book it out of my afternoon class and run up from A2 to the Palace for Adele.  One kids gets football tickets for presents and one kid concert tickets and trips to the mall.

08/18/2016 - 11:54pm But Bolt doesn't speed up in 2nd half

The commentators on tv were going on and on about how the second half of the race is slower for everyone INCLUDING Bolt,

It's just that he slows down less than other people so he gets further ahead of them.
