Just took our the dog for a morning walk to avoid the worst of a heat advisory day.  Hot and humid conditions gave me a bad case of swamp ass for Father's Day.

Long time DirecTV customer here.  Intense rain will attenuate the signal, but it must be intense rain.   Very low odds that this will happen during a game, but the probability is not zero.  I don't think I've ever had an issue during a football game in over 15 years as a DirecTV customer.    I know I had an issue when I recorded a Tigers playoff game in the 2000's...DVR playback was hosed because of intermittent heavy rain.

I am finally considering leaving DirecTV due to cost.    But I love the DVR option, and I had horrible success streaming Michigan basketball games last year when I was away from home on a supposedly reliable internet connection.   From my anecdotal evidence, the risk of bad streaming is higher than thunderstorms in my current location.

Interesting possible scenario, for sure.   I think McCaffrey definitely gets a look against OSU for at least a series or two under those circumstances.

Recently binge-watched Peaky Blinders and didn't initially realize Tom Hardy played my favorite character of that series (Alfie Solomons).    He stole scenes in that series, similar to Michael K. Williams and Omar's appearances in The Wire.   I have become a Tom Hardy fan.

We had good luck parking on a neighborhood street north of the stadium.  If you're willing to walk 20+ minutes, easy in/easy out parking can be found on nearby neighborhood streets.

Or maybe Evanston neighborhood parking regulations have changed recently?

$6 shipping to Svalbard and Jan Mayen Islands in the North Atlantic Ocean = BARGAIN!   I'm sure the Svalbard and Jan Mayen UM Alum club members will be pleased by that rate.   Hell, it probably costs $6 to ship a can of Campbell's Soup to those locations.

05/29/2018 - 2:11pm Speed kills....

....gas mileage.   I've put on over 30K miles in the past 1.5 years due to a job change, so I fill up frequently.   I push 40 mpg in a Subaru Outback on the rural 2 lane highways going 63-65 mph.   Once I hit the interstates and set the cruise to 75 mph, I'm back near 30-31 mpg.   In winter, reduce those numbers by 10%.

One bonus of the slow driving RV season on upper Midwest 2 lane highways:  the mpg's increase while patiently cruising at 52 mph behind a caravan of RV's.   Slower speeds and drafting are great for hypermiling!

05/29/2018 - 1:42pm Follow-up Volt question

The Chevy Volt was going to be my next vehicle, until a job change rendered it impractical (see my post below. I'm mostly highway miles, so paying extra for a Volt batteries was not a smart option).   Anyway, I haven't followed Volt production updates recently.  Does it continue to have a future in the GM portfolio?   Did sales numbers hold up during the recent low gas price era?

05/26/2018 - 8:57pm Used to be a mad vegetable

Used to be a mad vegetable gardner, but have scaled back significantly this year due to perceived time issues.   That's a cop out, though, since gardening has served as a much-needed therapy for me in recent years.   Something about digging in the dirt that makes me forget my other stresses.

OK - so I just convinced myself to throw in some tomato and pepper plants tomorrow.   Usual tomato mix is early girl, big beef, celebrity, and a bunch of romas.    And one prolific sungold plant.

05/26/2018 - 8:54pm Sungolds are the perfect

Sungolds are the perfect elixir for long upper Midwest winters.   Big fan of sungolds here.

05/24/2018 - 10:08am Family time.  I'll mostly

Family time.  I'll mostly enjoy the Memorial Day weekend with my soon-to-be graduating daughter.  I'm fairly good at mentally blocking out the fact that she'll be leaving the house for college next fall (dwelling on it makes me infinitely sad, so I opt not to dwell on it), but I realize how incredibly precious the few weekends we have with her under our roof will be during the next few months.

So...I'll be drinking a few beers and sharing a lot of laughs with my family.   And thinking about how cool it will be to watch football games with her at Michigan Stadium next fall.

05/23/2018 - 10:40am Dad's wood hauling truck

My dad owned a beat up, 1960's Chevy truck.   Similar to the one pictured below, but much more rust.   And it was bright orange.  It shook violently if you went faster than 45 mph.   It's one purpose in life? Hauling wood.   That truck was idle 99.99999% of the time, but it annually served it's purpose in late summer and early fall on wood cutting runs to stock up winter heating fuel.   In retrospect, a truly underappreciated vehicle.

Also, I was amazed to discover that most families outside of the U.P. didn't have a wood hauling truck.

Thanks for the update.  That was my fear.  The aftermath pictures were horrific.  I can't imagine the logistics involved just cleaning up (hauling waste materials off the island must be a complicated process), much less rebuilding.

05/17/2018 - 4:52pm USVI - St. John

St. John is amazing.  I would highly recommend it.   My only word of caution:  any idea how infrastructure and beaches have rebounded after the horrible hurricane season?   I saw major damage pictures from the Coral Bay side that showed major devastation.   I assume reconstruction will be slow since everything is slower down there.

05/17/2018 - 11:50am Camp Randall - cheesy scoreboard

I concur regarding Camp Randall.   They embraced the cheesy scoreboard culture early on, and I despise it.

05/17/2018 - 9:43am Sherman Field

Home of the Michigan Tech Huskies.   Glorious fall atmosphere when the leaves turn, plus there's a great chance you'll witness a snow bowl game late in the season.

I love DII football. Cheap tickets, not a bad seat in the house, and great skill level.

An unemployed Rick Pitino will generate oodles of interesting content.

05/16/2018 - 7:53am Interesting scenario

I'll play "what if" here.  What if the Tigers are sniffing 1st place in mid-July in a dreadful division?    How does that affect potential trade scenarios regarding the few semi-marketable players on the roster?   I assume Liriano, Greene, possibly Castellanos and Fulmer will still be shopped if the right package of prospects is offered.

My biggest hope was for a Zimmerman bounce back year that made him semi-marketable (yes, salary would be have to swallowed regardless), but those hopes seem to be dashed again.

Otherwise, this team has been fun to follow.   JaCoby Jones is such a spark plug.  I hope he can sustain a BA above .250-.260, because his speed and defense are top notch.
