07/05/2018 - 9:17am I began lurking during the…

I began lurking during the Rich Rod years, and am pretty sure it was the Trey game vs. Kansas that got me to sign up and make my first post.

04/03/2018 - 10:54am I'm sad we'll have no MOAR MAAR...

First time I saw the kid was actually vs. Villanova at Barclays in Nov. 14.   Happened to be sitting right next to his mom, who was beaming.

Don't remember MAAR's stat line from that game, but do remember instantly liking him.

He's true Blue.

04/03/2018 - 12:29am Bitterly disappointed is crashing out in the first two rounds...

... which we almost did, save for the Poole Party miracle.

Instead, we got some well-earned luck through persistence and the god of buzzer-beaters and get to hang a banner for the second time in six years.  Something none of our conference rivals has gotten to do.

Sports are a distraction from real-world stresses and disappointments, and we've had a highly entertaining, and mostly cathartic, distraction from the B-ball team for the last couple months.

So, I guess what I'm saying is you don't need to "tell" me anything.  But maybe you need to tell yourself something different about losses, something that makes you take it less personally to heart.

You'll be happier.

04/03/2018 - 12:02am Me too. But part of what's great about Beilein is doubt he feels

... for himself.  I obviously don't know the man personally, but he seems to have a joy and perspective on life that allow him to be highly, but not overly, competitive.  A winner who doesn't need to win to succeed or find victories.

That's a model this late 40s still sometimes man-child benefits from. Take the fun of the run to heart, and don't take the losses personally.

04/02/2018 - 11:51pm I can complain, but they didn't cost us the game, just ...

... made it a bit uglier, exasperating and somewhat more lopsided.

But it was all the offensive rebounds we gave up that really killed us.  And a few out of control fast breaks that led to turnovers, that led to fast breaks the other way, that led to back-breaking threes.

A lot of that speaks to fatigue / being gassed, as you say.  And a bit to inexperience.

And 'Nova just have (at least) 1-2 more genuine scorers than we do. It was us, not them, who needed a sixth man to put up career high numbers.

But like you I'm not mad.  Just glad to have enjoyed the not-long-ago unexpected run.

04/02/2018 - 11:44pm Always the 'right' time to be a Wolverine. Grateful for it all..

Was very fortunate to be a student in '89.  Knew that experience was a rare thing, thought there'd be at least a couple more in my lifetime, still do, and regardless am always grateful to be a Wolverine.

And I guarantee the team took nothing for granted. Overmatched, underperformed, whatever ... they made an immense effort and gave us a great run.

Onward to the Frozen Four and much, much more in years to come.

03/31/2018 - 9:32pm Maybe the most important thing Beilein did was get in Z's face..

... just after calling his first time out in the second half.  Z's game was off, but Beilein kept him on task.

03/31/2018 - 9:29pm I of course agree with the sentiment, but what is the reference?

Did Denzel specifically slag Moe recently?  Or is it just his general Sparty douchiness you're calling out, which is perfectly fine.

03/31/2018 - 9:19pm Is it wrong to want Dunc featured in the first half offense Mon?

Get him his six points fast!  Will help my heart.  I know, I'm selfish.

03/24/2018 - 11:48pm Those finishes at the rim toward the end were amazing...

... given how the TBS crew were salivating over the blocks by FSU early, I'd like to think that Z was just baiting them into thinking they had his number, when it was he that had theirs.

03/24/2018 - 11:28pm Three appreciation thread are better than two, or one.

Upvote, upvote, upvote.

03/24/2018 - 11:27pm LOL, great minds think alike.

Upvote for sharing the sentiment.

03/24/2018 - 11:13pm Letzten Vier, Herr Wagner!!

Wunderbar!!!     Whew, I really thought the "no goaltend, fourth foul on Mo" sequence was going to do us in.

03/22/2018 - 9:49pm As a Beagle owner, I upvote this eternally ...

... though the poor dog gets frightened when I roar for the Wolverines.

03/22/2018 - 9:44pm I'm late to the bang, but I'm happy.

So, so happy.

03/22/2018 - 9:44pm I'm late to the bang, but I'm happy.

So, so happy.

03/05/2018 - 10:57am East Rutherford!?!? God no.

I hope you are joking.  It's a dead zone for pre- and post-game, and would have no-where near the atmosphere.  Unless you mean the Prudential Center, in Newark, which at least is near mass transit link to Manhattan.

03/04/2018 - 10:08pm That whole sequence is so encouraging...

Duncan misses a three, doesn't hang his head, gets back on D and swats Edwards.

Duncan leads a break that sees the ball end up in Charles hands, he cuts baseline but doesn't force it up through the towers, instead passing out to the top to re-set, and run clock.

MAAR takes one for the team from Haas.

Teske screens off two people for Simpson to drive.

Simpson finds him for the dunk.

Bench goes wild.

03/04/2018 - 9:55pm Barclays is sooo antiseptic, dark and without atmosphere...

MSG dunks on it like Teske on Haas.

03/04/2018 - 1:09pm Michigan Fans were louder, but there was ugly green everywhere..

... but subdued green. Very subdued.

Did see some Purdue fans, but have to think they'll be much fewer than Blue backers.

Also, the Big Ten / Michigan gear for sale is really thin, chintzy and disappointing.

But all around a great time.

02/19/2018 - 10:10am South Region, every time ...

1989, 2013 ....

01/15/2018 - 8:52pm We MAARed MD's happy ending...

01/14/2018 - 5:23pm Meaux

... faux French Mo for the true pedant.

01/07/2018 - 4:30pm Celebrate 31

12/23/2017 - 5:32pm Oh man, you are so right about Wild Turkey ...

I had a very, very bad experience with WT sophomore year in Ann Arbor.  Now, at the time I was not yet a bourbon drinker.  But I agree, without ever having tasted it since, that it's a gut-burner to avoid.

12/23/2017 - 5:30pm Buffalo Trace & Woodford are solid, easy to find choices. Also:

A couple of other, pricier, niche whiskeys that I really like are:

F.E.W. bourbon and rye, out of Evanston Illinois.  The town is where the temperance movement started, and the initials in the name are those of one of the movement founders, so it's a nice thematic, pro-booze choice, too.

Also, Dad's Hat, out of PA. This is a "Monongahela" style rye whiskey, a sharp and spicy Pennsyl-tucky potion.

12/23/2017 - 5:28pm Eagle's a really nice regular "house" bottle...

Forgot about this one.  Will have to track it back down.

12/09/2017 - 2:43pm Happiness is a "W", bang, bang, shoot, shoot ...

... shoot many, many free throws in practice this week.

Who was the dude sitting next to Harbaugh in the stands?

11/22/2017 - 7:09pm I think it's a bit early to say that...

But mostly because I'd like him to stick around for a while. But also he's not likely to get the exposure and buzz many one and dones do on a team as limited as this one appears to be (employs reverse psychology).

In any case, nice to have a player with natural skill clearly a step above most competition from the get go. It's been a rare thing for Michigan in recent memory.

11/14/2017 - 12:33pm Thanks OP. Anyone know which building is at minute 2:07?

Never caught sight of that statue with the "Character" inscription on campus. Is that a detail of the Union that I somehow missed, or the Graduate Library, maybe?

10/14/2017 - 9:52pm You need to go elsewhere...

... preferably, somewhere with a little perspective.

09/24/2017 - 10:47am Children of O'Korn

... actually, nope.

09/24/2017 - 10:35am The DB Jeebies

Taking it from the opposition's point of view.

09/23/2017 - 9:00pm

09/23/2017 - 8:57pm I only regret that I have but one up vote to give this comment..

Thank you for your service and expansive view of patriotism.

09/15/2017 - 8:40am We've won bigger games and climbed higher mountains since then..

"We've won bigger games and climbed higher mountains since then, but I don't think there was a moment I was more excited watching a football game."

That is exactly my feeling about the game.  Primal scream when Desmond came down with that ball.

I think Desmond may also get less play than Charles because he had a shorter NFL career without sustained success as a receiver. Also, we remember Charles for laying on hits, and can take pride in him as representing both the flash and defensive grit we want to see in Michigan football.

09/14/2017 - 7:53pm One of the 2-3 Michigan wins that mean the most to me...

Notre Dame beat us all four years I was in Ann Arbor.  Reggie f-ing Ho, Rick f-ing Mirer, Rocket f-ing Ismail, Mike f-ing Stonebreaker all haunted me.

But this game exorcised those demons.

The PSU and OSU games in 1997 also rate.  The first because it's when I first thought we genuinely were going to get it done, the second because of all the times we had beaten heavily favored Buckeye squads in years prior.

Next will be November 25.

09/03/2017 - 5:13pm You are right, and anthracite

... for that guy.

03/28/2017 - 7:22pm That's the town.

Butch carried the HS to it's only state championship in '78, if I remember correctly.  Not really a strong high school for sports, excepting soccer.

Was the theater the Rialto?

03/28/2017 - 11:57am Bo came to my sleepy NJ street and recruited Woolfolk...

Butch Woolfook lived on the street I grew up on leading up to and during summers of the years he played for M.  Seeing the winged helmet for the first time, on a local sports hero, I was smitten.  Never left me, and nine years later I became a Wolverine.

03/23/2017 - 10:55am Call us a Cinderella if you don’t really understand ....

"Call us a Cinderalla if you don't really understand what the term "Cinderella" means (like, at all). And call us "white collar" at your own risk.

But don't call us a surprise."

That's an And 1.

03/19/2017 - 7:11pm Should have put title in quotes. It's excerpted from the article

But I do love the puns.  Here's one I actually came up with:

Wagner wheels down the lane like a Teuton truck.

03/17/2017 - 7:36pm Don't the Cardinal represent Stanford?

Maybe the dropped S is for Savings (on editorial staff).

01/14/2017 - 10:12am Days of Rice and Roses

A search for 1989 NCAA and Rose Bowl turned up this gem of a page.

Pretty purple prose:

"Since the human race first started to record its history, no school has ever captured the coveted Rose Bowl and NCAA Championship in the same year. In 1989 that all changed though ... this page attempts to capture the jublilant feelings and triumphant emotions all Michigan athletes and fans felt in the year of Rice and roses"

Also, telling that the Rose Bowl gets first mention and most ink.

10/29/2016 - 10:52pm I wish this post made more points...

... left some off the board.  Panicking.

10/29/2016 - 10:16pm I disagree on the competence point. Talent, culture and consiste

I disagree on the competence point. Talent, culture and consistency are what take more time to establish.

I think you can question a coaching decision here or there (the Shane Morris snaps on third baffle me, given how well Speight was playing), but I don't think you can question the overall competence of Harbaugh, his staff, and their players.

Consistent, top-line talent that has benefitted from that coaching, a culture of respectful hatred mixed with an expectation to win will take time to establish and put in the record books.

Maybe we're saying the same thing, and your point is that Harbaugh and Co need time to root out all the bad habits and re-define Michigan in the eyes of our opponents (particularly State and OSU).

Today, frustrations aside, was a good step in that direction.

10/29/2016 - 10:08pm What did he say that was inaccurate?

It's always one game.  There's always more work to do.

What's your point?

10/29/2016 - 10:00pm That Defensive personal foul sent me looking for a sip of whiske

It was an early "keep them in the game" moment.  Without it, they're punting to Peppers from deep in their own end, and we can begin to break away earlier, after a great response from the offense in immediately marching down the field to negate their opening salvo.

To me it seemed that the defense wanted to annihilate them just as badly as we wanted them to annihalate them, and got a little impulsive and impatient early, and lackadaisical late on.

Given that they're all three decades younger than me, I think it's wise to overlook this "flaw" and, rather, revel in a good win. Now that Paul Bunyan is back, I don't think we'll see the same jitters next year and beyond.

Have to remember just how bleak this series has been for the past decade. You can tell it matters to the kids, and with an away win under the belt, and a healthy, channeled hatred, rather than the intimidation sometimes seen in the Rodriquez/Hoke years, I'm thinking we'll be fine.

10/29/2016 - 9:49pm Hopefully not as much sanity lost as perspective...

That would be a steep bill.

10/29/2016 - 9:45pm What I didn't understand was the Shane Morris snaps on key 3rd..

... downs. Speight was converting long third downs on the regular.  Why mess with that?
