If that was an NBA game it would be the middle of the third quarter and they would have a chance to right the ship.

...NBA teams get to advance the ball to the frontcourt after a timeout in the last two minutes of the fourth quarter and overtime, and they don't have the stupid running clock at the end of quarters like CBB has at the end of the first half.

01/31/2014 - 6:02pm For clarity's sake...

...this isn't a "White House mandate", and it wasn't "the White House" who told anyone to put "the policy in place." It was the Department of Education (an Executive Branch of the United States Government department) that established the rule as part of its interpretation of 20 USC. Obviously, the Secretary of Education reports to the President whose office resides in the White House, but in an article that attempts to make things as clear as possible and avoid confusing language, this shorthand is offputting.

01/29/2014 - 10:58am You mean...

...his 2013 expulsion. But yes.

01/29/2014 - 10:56am That's the house my parents lived in...

...when I was at U-M. They moved there in the summer between my freshman/sophomore years after my dad retired from the Army. So I didn't grow up there or go to school there.

Nice grey 1840s farmhouse with a red barn (subsequently torn down by future owners).

01/29/2014 - 9:33am My perspective on this...

...is that the policy implemented in 2013 in response to the 2011 regulation has the effect of dramatically changing the dynamic of who at the university determines if a student-athlete accuesed of sexual misconduct stays at U-M. Now it's the OSCR and much less so the athletic department. In my considered opinion, this is a very good thing.

01/28/2014 - 4:14pm Between '86-'89 when I was at Michigan, my parents...

...lived on Wing Lake Rd between Maple and 14 Mile Rd. My younger brother graduated from Andover in '89.

01/27/2014 - 1:30pm But it is. The article states they add in...

...natural flavors and fragrances.

The weekly recipe is tweaked constantly. Natural flavors and fragrances captured during squeezing are added back into the juice to restore flavor lost in processing.

None of that shows up on the bottle labeling. The point is the marketing tries to give the impression that it's fresh squeezed and they mark up the price significantly to take advantage of that impression and to help form that impression. You pay a crap ton for the illusion and for the ease of pouring it right out of a plastic bottle.

My memories of from concentrate OJ are much more fond after this realization.

01/27/2014 - 1:12pm Only way to upload the graphs...

01/27/2014 - 12:46pm Speaking of...

...being lied to.

I know. I know that our nation is built on brazenly lying to each other. Cigarettes and organic food and the waiting list for Michigan football season tickets, it's all the same. Some person thinks they can make money on some activity and just lies and lies until the jig's up. But at some point self-respect has to kick in with the observers. I mean. At least you'd think so, right?

Simply Orange orange juice is adulterated. Going back to frozen concentrate, damn it.

John Beilein is a man without guile. His explosion may have been calculated, but it was genuine in the extreme. And super effective.

01/27/2014 - 12:32am If only you had...

01/23/2014 - 3:26pm The age old...

...question: "Does size matter?"

The answer: Only in the eye of the beholder. Or something like that.

01/23/2014 - 3:24pm Not sure why you choose to use...

...winning percentage vs. total wins as the criterion for "winningnest program in NCAA FB history".

I'll stick with total wins and the title.

01/23/2014 - 1:23pm My prediction...

01/17/2014 - 3:35pm I like the way that Walton...

...goes to the restrained fist pump after his halfcourt heave tickles the twine. Acting like you've been there before is a good look.

01/17/2014 - 2:46pm .

Oh, the homonymity.

01/17/2014 - 12:42pm The FBI agent in the film...

...stated that the handwriting on the paper found in the dumpster with the phone number and name of Kerrigan's ice rink matched Harding's. Again with the editing, that clip followed one where Harding stated that it was determined that the handwriting wasn't hers. I know who I believe. Her alternate reality is based on her covering her ass and throwing off smokescreens.

01/17/2014 - 12:28pm So many spelling and punctuation...

...errors in a screed about academic failings...

01/17/2014 - 12:05pm Bush league...

...no doubt about it. Also, OT.

01/17/2014 - 12:04pm That aspect was not...

...addressed in the documentary. But yeah, Detroit got abused as well by the Gilooly-Harding Gang.

01/17/2014 - 11:24am So MSU will be playing...

...on Cape Horn?

01/17/2014 - 11:22am Regarding...

...Nick Baumgardner, that's what the graphic depicts. Yes, Meinke moved on from the MLive Michigan football beat and is now covering the Lions for them. Baumgardner has the MLive Michigan football beat and they hired Brendan Quinn for the Michigan men's basketball beat. He previously covered Tennesse men's basketball.

01/17/2014 - 11:08am Harding did herself...

...zero favors in this documentary. She came off as spiteful and delusional. As if anyone with a brain believes that she had no prior knowledge of Jeff Gilooly's harebrained scheme. Harding's hardscrabble upbringing and ascent to the top was a great story that she could have capitalized on if she had been willing to play the game. She wasn't, and she became a one trick pony that couldn't consistently do the trick (the triple axel). She made her routines all about athleticism, which is fine if you can hit the jumps that separate you from the competition. But she couldn't when it counted.

Say what you will about Kerrigan, she came back physically and mentally from the attack and should have won gold. Anyone who watched that event objectively knows that she was robbed by the international skating community and that they were getting back at the US for bringing negative attention to the sport.

01/17/2014 - 10:56am The 70s will be alive...

...for a long time for those of us who lived it as kids. Of course, Gilligan's Island was a 60s thing as it ran from 1964 to 1967, but we Gen Xers experienced it in its rerun glory.

MaryAnn was my favorite, but who's kidding who? Ginger was all that and more. Let's just say that Bob Denver had it quite good for those three years.

The NYT has a wonderful obituary for Hiroo Onoda today

01/14/2014 - 3:07pm The answer to the last...

...question is in the top 3 of any answer in the Mailbag series.

Standard response to anyone on the MGoBoard who suggests such a thing should be a link to this page (and a downvote).

01/13/2014 - 1:31pm It will be interesting to see how...

...Gardner chooses to spend the offseason. After classes are out, will he:

  1. Primarily work out locally in Nussmeier designed (but unsupersvised) drills with his receivers.
  2. Hop from camp to camp (Elite 11, Manning, etc.).
  3. Spend time with a QB guru (Whitfield and/or Clarkson).
  4. All of the above.
  5. Some other combination.

I'd expect he'll follow last summer's script with respect to camps, because aspiring NFL QBs do not turn down the showcase opportunities these camps provide. I wouldn't be surprised if Nussmeier is less inclined than Borges was for his QBs to seek tutelage from a QB guru.

So I'll go with number 5 (1 and 2, specifically).

01/09/2014 - 2:08pm And...

...exhale. Blow out the bad, breathe in the good!

01/09/2014 - 1:43pm Take a look at the sidebar...

...in this Chantel Jennings piece. Look especially at how the 2009 Washington rushing game improved from its dismal 2008 performance.

2009 WASHINGTON (2008 Washington stats in parenthesis)

  • Points per game: 26.1 (13.2)
  • Rushing yards per game: 139.0 (99.3) Yards per rush: 4.3 (2.8)
  • Passing yards per game: 236.5 (163.8)
  • Completion percentage: 58.3 (47.2)
  • 3rd down conversion: 46 percent (42 percent)
  • Red zone scores: 86 percent (71 percent)
  • Touchdowns: 37 (19)
  • Sacks allowed: 28 for 173 yards (31 for 257 yards)
01/09/2014 - 12:23pm I absolutely wish...

...Coach Borges the best and hope he quickly finds another coaching opportunity. It's easy to criticize and in large part the criticism is warranted. But the personal attacks and vindictiveness of many who wanted him gone are so out of line.

Second only to the promise of what Coach Nussmeier may bring to the postion of Michigan OC, the best outcome of this move is that the Fire Borges meme is dead.*

*Except I know that people will continue to use it in an attempt to be clever. So it won't be dead, but it will be lame.

01/06/2014 - 2:17pm So you're an...

...admitted self-loathing douchebag who's also pedantic.  This should be fun.

01/06/2014 - 1:40pm According to the article...

...Notre Dame is considering signing with Under Armour because they're butthurt about Michigan's adidas MFN status. ND in adidas has been a joke. In UA, it should be an abomination.

01/06/2014 - 1:32pm You might want to cut your losses...

...while you're behind. A little friendly advice: If your post begins with a doucheiness apologia, you should probably rethink your post.

01/03/2014 - 10:28am You're absolutely...

...right that Michigan and every other B1G school save Northwestern eases its admission standards substantially for its football recruits. That said, based on anecdotes from recruits and student-athletes at Michigan, the recruiting pitch doesn't sugarcoat the rigor of Michigan athletics (even if S-As have tremendous access to enhanced academic support/facilities and are encouraged to find "realistic" majors). There's little doubt that recruits with minimal to no interest in academics are likely put off by Michigan's recruiting pitch emphasis on academics.

01/03/2014 - 10:10am Underrated position change...

...due to graduation.

LS Jareth "All Time LS Pass Receptions Leader" Glanda to be replaced by Snapper Scott Sypniewski.

01/03/2014 - 9:55am .

I really couldn't decide if I should name this thread "way to early preview" or "what everyone will be bitching about next fall," but as you can tell, I went with the former.

Too bad you didn't entitle the thread "Way Too Early Preview". But maybe that would be asking too much.

12/31/2013 - 10:21am Kennard...

...will be Big Blue, not B1G Blue.

12/26/2013 - 11:54am I almost hate to ask...

...this question, but any projected fifth years likely to move on?
