But they were giving us that…

But they were giving us that sweet, sweet ESPN3 with no extra fee for over ten years! It's not like it was a free for the first month type situation.

ESPN 3 used to be included…

ESPN 3 used to be included with one's cable subscription. It was great to have online access to all their broadcasts, from the prime time events to obscure matches like mid-week EMU basketball games. Now one has to pay for it, IN ADDITION to their cable. Plus that might not get you games from their various conference channels.

ESPN+ is a bad deal for a janky service that hurts long-time ESPN viewers, and Disney wonders why people don't want to pay for something they used to get for free?

It would be prudent not to…

It would be prudent not to oversimplify Ward's role at Ford Motor, within the notorious Service Department. Unlike Owens, he was not well liked by fellow Black workers and was known for actively keeping them out of more preferable jobs at Ford. Also, I think Owens joined Ford when Willis temporarily left for military service.

Swear to god, Jim Harbaugh…

Swear to god, Jim Harbaugh sat next to me at the EMU-Duke game. It was played at the Colt's dome and he wandered in and took an empty seat for a half. Still have the EMU NCAA tourney hat with his autograph.

I really enjoyed working at Palmer Commons. The real perk was the leftover catering. Fancy items like lamb chops, Zingermans deli trays...it was great.

Weird piece of trivia, Jim…

Weird piece of trivia, Jim Harbaugh attended EMU's upset of Duke in the 1996 NCAA tourney, the game was at the RCA Dome when he was quarterback of the Colts.

Wait, there are fourteen…

Wait, there are fourteen teams in the Big Ten, now?

From my time in Ann Arbor,…

From my time in Ann Arbor, these films were shot on campus, or very near. Answer This, Jumper (State and Liberty), Ides of March, The Five-Year Engagement, Mooz-Lum, and Salvation Boulevard. No stone cold classics like Breaking Away, but Five-Year Engagement does have basically every actor in Hollywood in it. I also think the finale of Weeds uses the Michigan Union in an establishing shot.

Please keep Pitbull! This banner is the best one since...the last one, I've liked them all, tbh. Also, Jobu, that joke has not aged well. Maybe reference Tom Berenger's bad knees or Wild Thing if you need to bring up Major League.

I think he's saying Graham and the entire Eagles organization is calling it quits? I don't know, I only the read headlines for current events.

People drive all sorts of…

People drive all sorts of crazy on I-94 between Ann Arbor and Detroit. I work in the Motown, and used to live in AA. It was a rough drive every time at rush hour. I am much happier just living in Detroit, though that may not be an option for you. As for pita, I recommend La Pita on Cass Ave.

Far out man, I love the Big…

Far out man, I love the Big Lebowski bit ending with a Motor City Bowl rejection letter, and still think about it to this day. Probably because it's the post where I realized Mgoblog spoke my language and should be my go-to source for UM what-have-you. Thank you for this blast from the past.

One nitpick, should Brandt have been replaced with Jim Brandstatter? Seems perfect to me.

This is no "Looks like…

This is no "Looks like Heaven's easier to get into than Arizona State." Saying Columbus < Russia makes fun of Michigan fan's skewed values. Which, I 100% agree with and relate to.

Is it making fun of OSU or Michigan? Looks like the joke's on UM fans. Either way, using this for my new profile pic.

I don't trust any college…

I don't trust any college ranking that lists Liberty over UM. Unless they are ranking per capita homophobia.

Pie Sci

Has anyone been to Pie Sci in Detroit? Their pizzas are all the work of some mad scientist (Lil' Kimchi, Shrimp and White Wine) that should taste awful but are always delicious. Soooo good. I also saw someone recommend Tomatoes Apizza, and I don't know if they one time I went there they were having a bad week or something, but it was the worst neapolitan I've ever had.

My friend Phil is 6 foot 7 and was an amazing ofensive lineman in division 2 football. His piggyback rides beat all others in the most imporant piggyback criteria, security and mobility.

I love these retrospectives

I forgot how tumultuous that era of coaching searches was. Definitely not 'simpler times'.

Thompson did part of her

Thompson did part of her research for her book on the uprising at the archives I work at. Does that make me partially responsible for her Pulitzer? Who's to say?

Are "archive/ethnographic research stories" a subgenre of fiction, because count me in. Any others like A Spy in the Archives?

Anyone listen to AM 580?

I saw that CKWW, AM 580, is owned by the same company and is also downsizing with 89x. If you haven't heard that station, it is by far the best rock station in the area, playing a good selection of popular and deep tracks from rock's golden age. 89x is kind of a shell of its former self outside of the Time Warp, but 580 does a really good job. Hopefully this scaling back in operations doesn't affect them as much as 89x's downsizing.

UM grad as EP

Jake Kasdan is a UM graduate and the show's executive producer, so..yeah. He also directed the Dewey Cox Story, which is one of my favorite parodies. So hopefully him, Jalen's charisma, and the Fresh Off the Boat people can make this a good one.

Beach Boys = Champions of the West(ern Cali)

Pet Sounds is the best (okay Sgt. Peppers, the 2nd best), and I love their drug inspired songs like Feel Flows, but the TV show China, IL forever tarnished my perception of The Beach Boys.

UM has actually centralized

UM has actually centralized most administrative services (sometimes at the expence of student services) in the name of decreasing overall administrative costs. Not trying to justify or condemn the salaries of university staff, but the administrative thing isn't the cost burden it once was. As someone who works at a Michigan public university, the bigger issue is the decrease in funding by the state legislature. That's what kept costs affordable in the past, and it has been steadily going down for years.

I also thought Regent Deitch's response on rising costs was lackluster, and he didn't seem too concerned with the problem. I'm just worried the university will get away from its mission and core values if people don't take on the tuition issue with more gusto.

Shutdown Fullback

They claim it wasn't successful, but their Shutdown Fullback videos were hilarious. It was so low rent and weird, like an [Adult Swim] program. I still go back to see the one with LSU's Cajun lawyer.

Definitively an archives and not a library

They may have some books they keep because of unique historical value, but their mission is to serve as the primary archives for UM and to house archival collections related to the state of Michigan. The vast majority of their shelves are filled with boxes of unique, historical documents. The staff is made up of mostly archivists (or positions related to archiving like records managers or digital curators), and they do not employ any librarians. An archives houses primary source materials (like 99% of the Bentley's research collections), while a library has non-unique items like mass-produced books/DVD's (Like at Hatcher). Thus, it is definitively an archives and not a library.

They call themselves the "Bentley Library", but refer to themselves as "an archives". I could go into the politics of an archives titling themselves as a "Library", but it boils down to 95% of the population having a grasp on the term "library" but having no clue what an archives actually is.

Should be "Michigan archives tweets Harbaugh..."

The Bentley is technically an archives, not a library. Very different types of institutions. The "Library" in the Bentley's name is just part of its title, and is actually a misnomer. Yeah, it's a big nitpick, I don't care.

Just watched the movie Spotlight

and noticed Paterno at a game making a cameo on a TV in a bar in one scene (the film is set in 2001). Seemed like a subtle way for the filmmakers to equate the abuses at Penn St to the Catholic church pedophelia epidemic.

Yeah, it got a tad bit racist when they started justifying America's political and cultural domination over American Indians.

You said "It has been a long

You said "It has been a long time since I have been to Detroit", and everyone else told you things have drastically changed, roughly the past ten years.

These sources you provided

These sources you provided are clickbait that use a poor choice of statistics to appeal to people's preconceptions of American urban centers. Really misinformed stuff.  If this is how you guide your opinions, I would recommend changing your reading habits. Also, I do not live in Detroit, I just think what you say is ignorant and harmful.

Lost in this shuffle is the

Lost in this shuffle is the fact that this person called Chicago a "dump". Which...wha?

Just so you know, you sound

Just so you know, you sound both ignorant and prejudiced to informed people when you say things like "the worst $%^ hole". Worse than that, you are perpetuating a harmful misconception (based on cherry-picked or out-of-date info) of an entire group of people when you pop off and then double down with these remarks.

You just offended people on

You just offended people on multiple levels, that's why the discussion is all over the place. I could explain why Detroit's a great place, but it's like I said earlier. You seem to want to live in a a snaitized bubble, like a shopping mall. Which, fine, but don't insult what you don't understand.

Detroit has serious problems

Detroit has serious problems and you can refer to statistics, but unless you have spent time in the city and/or keep in touch with its people, your statement comes off as ungrounded and classist. LSAClassOf2000's earlier comment is much closer to the reality.

Well, Detroit is technically

Well, Detroit is technically a border town, I'll give you that. Beyond that, you're sounding like a person who likes to denigrate vibrant places from afar without a good grasp on reality.

Something tells me you

Something tells me your favorite city is a mall, Twelve Oaks or Somerset perhaps? When you travel beyond the stretch between the highway off ramp and a Ford Field parking lot, you would find that Detroit is a fun place with a lot of creative energy.

Cool story,

Bro.
