06/06/2018 - 4:43pm also...i don't see any way…

also...i don't see any way to edit a post?

the reason i'm asking is because, just as i hit the "post me" button i realized i hadn't offered my laurel and hearty handshake for all the work.  it looks great!

06/06/2018 - 4:39pm this is NOT a complaint, and…

this is NOT a complaint, and i know youse guys have a crapload of stuff right now...but i read at work using an rss reader (feedly), and the feed currently includes the comment thread, which dear god make it stop.

05/30/2018 - 9:40am i miss johnny.

there was no such thing as a throwaway post when it came to johnny.  he clearly stewed on every single word.

05/22/2018 - 4:04pm probably my favorite TWO ever.

i love that guy.  such a joyful player.

one of the things i love about michigan is the stamp it puts on people.  this university just becomes a part of you.

by all rights, moe should've come here, played some good, hyper basketball, and moved on without looking back over his shoulder.  instead, this german kid with not much knowledge of the history of this place (and i'm not talking about athletics, at all) will leave as...yeah, i'll say it - a michigan man.  he got it, somehow.

what a place.

05/17/2018 - 11:01am tim drevno

the fans here that constantly banged the "fire drevno' drum last season are miserable, unhappy assholes that will be bitching just as loudly about something completely new this season.

their lives aren't full unless they're unhappy and making sure everyone knows it...and, preferably, making everyone around them feel the same way.

05/14/2018 - 9:59am the baseball abstract, any year.

starting around 1980, bill james essentially created the modern baseball analytics movement. would it have occurred anyway?  yeah, probably, but he definitely took it mainstream.  it's a bit of a leap (but not a huge one) to suggest that the growing acceptance of the approach that he spawned led to more robust statistical analysis in other sports, as well.

reading some of the annual abstracts now (and i have them all, starting when he got his first big book deal in 1982), it's pretty clear that the statistical analysis is that of a science in its infancy, at least partially due to the lack of information available at the time.  fielding data and pitch-by-pitch data, for example, simply weren't available - james did much of his early work based on the stat lines you would find in the macmillan encyclopedia or on the back of a baseball card.  the basic tenets hold up, though.

with that said, i've been a stathead for 40 years, but what really grabs you is the writing.  the guy is just a really good writer.  ignore the stats, if you think they're too basic, but the rest is still terrifically re-readable.

05/09/2018 - 4:31pm yes.

let's use a shane morris item as a way to, once more, take a shot at john o'korn.  that shit never gets old.

05/09/2018 - 1:27pm mo hurst.

that whole "one nfl scout says" thing was and is utter bullshit.  a numbnuts ex-coach type who calls himself a "scout" has no earthly idea of whether maurice hurst is healthy or not.  i don't either, but i don't pretend that i do.

that he didn't go until the fifth round basically tells you that way, way, WAY too few of these guys actually watch, you know, football games, and that the nfl is an extreme form of follow-the-leader.  once it became clear that teams were passing on him because of "concerns," NOBODY was going to be the team that "wasted" a pick on him.

here's what i DO know - that guy is a goddamned football player.  i look forward to him laying waste to entire regions for years to come.

04/30/2018 - 4:57pm i...don't think so?

04/30/2018 - 4:08pm i love the writing on this site.

always have.

part of the reason for that is the coining of phrases such as "three star mafia."

drop the mike, ace.

04/27/2018 - 2:06pm also note re: hurst...

todd mcshay does not include hurst in his round two mock draft:

mel kiper, at least, has him as the 21st best prospect on the board.

these people do not watch actual football games.

04/12/2018 - 10:34am yeah.

that's all drevno did last year.  fucking fistbumping.

the constant harping about drevno by people who don't know shit about shit just never gets old.

04/12/2018 - 10:29am oh, my god, yes.

so, SO many commenters are just complete experts on what makes a good coach, and they have no. freaking. idea of what a coach does on a daily basis.

people judged brady hoke as a coach in part based on press conferences, as if he somehow owed us a full and complete explanation and / or self-immolation of every mistake and every loss; his lack of "satisfactory" answers to the press were one more log on the fire of why he sucked. now those same idiots are judging jim harbaugh based on speeches he makes to the team on monday afternoon, or at the friday night walkthrough.  neither of those things are anywhere near the most important thing a coach does.

what a coach does is win or lose.  i submit to you - if we catch the hail mary against msu, if josh metellus catches that interception against ohio state, nobody is talking about whether harbaugh "tells weird stories" or not.  it's all bullshit.  don't buy into it.

04/10/2018 - 8:37am nah.

sometimes, as a quarterback / manager of any kind, you have to bitch someone out.  you just do, and sometimes they don't respond unless you do it in front of everyone.

we also don't know if it was an ongoing issue.  gentry is still new to the position, too.  it wouldn't surprise me a bit to hear it's been a point of emphasis.

04/09/2018 - 10:28pm some of the comments here...

...are just soooooo...michigan fan.

04/06/2018 - 12:50pm you seem fun.

EDITED to acknowledge bolivia and now-deleted posts.

04/06/2018 - 9:10am honestly?

yeah, i get the venting thing...but boy.  it's been a GREAT week, in my book.

04/06/2018 - 9:06am a perfect fit.

onward and upward!

04/06/2018 - 9:05am melrose...

i turned it on halfway through the second period without having any idea who was in the booth...and i honestly and truly throught i had turned on something like a notre dame version of the teamcast thing tbs / tnt did during the final four hoops broadcast.  not even kidding.

then buccigross said "barry" and i still didn't know who it was..  it didn't even occur to me that it was barry melrose.  i didn't recognize buccigross' voice yet, either.

once i realized what was happening...well, i usually like buccigross, and he had seemed at least semi-neutral.  as for melrose, i don't know if he was "biased" as much as "incompetent" and "unprepared."  he knew more names from notre dame, so he focused on them.  brutal in general.

04/04/2018 - 9:25am poor, misunderstood...

04/04/2018 - 9:17am no, he doesn't.

...and it gets real lonely, under that bridge.

04/03/2018 - 3:23pm like i said, you won.

04/03/2018 - 3:19pm no.

04/03/2018 - 2:13pm sigh.

one of my favorite seasons ever.  just a great ride, beginning to end.

04/03/2018 - 1:35pm no, being you pretty much qualifies as being a dick.

if you're going to go all pedantic, "osu kicks our ass every year" is not "stating facts" on any level.  double overtime and within a touchdown with 2 minutes left in the last two meetings cannot be considered "kicking our ass."  shit, brady hoke's last two tries were within a touchdown for 55 minutes and he could've won another with a 2-point conversion late.

but you win, you just got me to argue with you.  can't believe i fell for your shit.

04/03/2018 - 11:56am oh, look.

we lose, and ham shows up.

"preparation" does not, to my way of understanding the word, have impact on free throw shooting.

"humiliation" is an interesting word to use here.  i promise you, the team and staff didn't feel "humiliated" and won't, ever.  disappointed?  obviously.  wishing they'd played better?  well, duh.  but they will hold their heads high knowing they went full out all the way and earned their shot.  notre dame didn't feel humilated, either.  the only people that get "humiliated" after a game like this are whiny man-children like yourself that place most of their own self-worth on whether their favorite team meets their expectations and wins every single game convincingly.

good heavens, please don't throw out the "one small comment" bullshit, okay? you've been almost unremittingly negative for literally the entire hoops season (AND, let's not forget, the football season). who can ever forget the "i can't take it anymore, i'm not going to watch this team until it gets better" shit?  i won't.

michigan's shooting - EVERY team's shooting - has to do with randomness.  by definition.  every team has a level, and you randomly go up and down around it.  this team's level was lower than some previous beilein teams, and it hurt them in the end.  get over it and grow up.

i've said it many, many times before - please, by all means, let us all know where your seats are, so we can sit as far away from you as humanly possible.  i can't think of anyone on this board i'd less like to sit near, up to and including the sparty trolls.

being negative all the time doesn't make you "realistic" or whatever. it just makes you a dick.

04/03/2018 - 10:03am ...and there it is.

in a night filled with disappointment, one thing comes through.  maizen, being a dick.

thanks, man.  you can go back under your bridge now.

04/03/2018 - 9:59am what. a. tool.

yeah, fucking garbage.  all of it.

isn't it nap time?

04/03/2018 - 9:24am agree 100%

i'm as excited to see 2018-19 livers as just about anyone that will be on the roster.  i think he's going to be an absolute wrecking crew before he's done here.

04/03/2018 - 9:09am i don't have any idea if this has been discussed, but...

...divicenzo might be thinking about it, too...this was not a spike albrecht game.

04/03/2018 - 9:06am hey remember that time when...

moe wagner played 258 minutes and had 86 points for his entire freshman season?  and couldn't get off the bench behind ricky doyle and mark donnal?  for a team that was relegated to a play-in game?  good times.

04/03/2018 - 8:59am derp.

there is zero chance that, barring injury, teske and simpson aren't the starters.

04/03/2018 - 5:27am i want him to,win it all, too, but...

he’s already proven that.

nobody i’d rather have.

04/03/2018 - 5:10am saban does both, dummy.

he tips his hat AND figures out how to kick their asses.

04/02/2018 - 11:28pm oh, fuck off.

04/02/2018 - 3:06pm villanova v kansas

two things:

1 - truly one of the worst in-game coaching jobs i've ever seen.  kansas literally never adjusted to the fact that villanova was shooting the lights out from outside.  bill.  bubby.  you've GOT to make some adjustments to the game in front of you.  good heavens.

2 - villanova played about as close to perfect as you can play.  can they do that again?  sure, i guess...that's pretty hard to do, no matter how great you are.

look, i know they're terrific. - talented, well-coached, and experienced.  but they also went into last year's tournament as a 31-3 1-seed with kenpom's #2 offense...and got knocked out in the 2nd round by a wisconsin team that played so-so offense but really good defense.  sound familiar?

they love to shoot threes, but they won't shoot 40 of them again tonight.  if we hit any shots (we DON'T need to shoot like we did vs a&m), it will be a dogfight.

michigan 71, villanova 68

04/01/2018 - 6:50pm oh, for fuck’s sake.

can we not?

04/01/2018 - 8:11am i dunno...

...i didn’t think we got the offense going on any level *until* we pushed the pace. that won’t work against villanova, i don’t think - we’re going to *have* to limit transition threes, or we’re dead meat - but i think it helped us this time.

03/31/2018 - 11:08pm whatever, man.

i didn't "see this coming."  didn't need to. because i'm not an idiot.

i didn't think that a lousy stretch was enough to completely ignore and forget john beilein's track record.  he did what he's done for his entire goddamned coaching career.  he took the pieces, adapted, and turned those pieces into a really good team. like fucking always.  this was only a surprise if you base your entire view of a program on one game, or one week, or one season.

03/31/2018 - 10:22pm OR,

villanova is playing a perfect game tonight.  they're not going to play like this every night.

they're also playing against a team coached by...uh...bill self.  big difference.

03/31/2018 - 7:11am good god.

comparing john beilein in feb 2017 to brady hoke, ever, is to ignore...what? 20 years of evidence from both guys? one had a consistent record of adapting, changing, and flogging teams to improve on an in-season basis, almost without exception, and the other is brady goddamned hoke.

give this one up. you lost. you were being ridiculous then, you’re being ridiculous now.

03/29/2018 - 4:39pm E5

double post.  apologies.

03/29/2018 - 4:38pm it's not fun being a texas *anything* fan...

...those people are as filled with self-loathing as we are.

03/29/2018 - 1:13pm probably.

but 2 seasons with beilein (or a single season, probably) would obviously have turned him into something more polished and developed than a single season with shaka smart.

03/29/2018 - 10:05am mo bamba...

...i'll say this:  i hoped we would get him, if only to counter the whole "beilein can't recruit" thing.

i was thinking about him a lot this season.  he is obviously super-talented and fun to watch, but he...didn't seem to develop much, in my opinion.  he's still SO raw.  thought experiment - if he'd come to michigan, woudl he be a one-and-done?  i'm not so sure.  i think he would've struggled to fit in to the system and played intermittent minutes...25 one night, 4 the next.  he'd be developing, certainly, but not to the point where you could slot him in for 28 minutes every night.  the nba would still be interested, but not as much, and he might just decide to stay another year...when the 2 years of camp beilein would turn him into a lottery pick with a clear career in front of him.  as it is, are we sure he'll have a long nba career?  magic 8-ball says ask again later.

but i just went off on a tangent...i completely, 100% agree - as a michigan fan i'll take the two-and-done guys over the obvious one-and-dones every damn time.  super-talented players, but players that know that they have work to do to get to the nba AND (and this is critical) who won't view their college team as aau ball part 2.

03/29/2018 - 9:51am indeed.

...i believe that "scoreboard" is all the argument you need.

03/29/2018 - 9:22am hm.

this seems like the least offensive trolling there ever was on this here blog.  if it is, in fact trolling - more like, you know, humor.

03/29/2018 - 9:19am +1

for proper use of "zucchetto."

-1 for misspelling it, however, so no change.

03/29/2018 - 9:16am dangit.

...beat me to it, although i was going to go with "sourfaced sanctimony" instead of "ears."

03/29/2018 - 9:14am man...

...i was this close to dropping the $2000-ish to fly, stay, rent a car and go on saturday night.  wish i was joining you all.
