05/11/2018 - 10:35am Left my hometown of Toledo in

Left my hometown of Toledo in 1978 when mom and dad drove up 23 to drop me off for college in Ann Arbor.  I get back every now and then -- Packos is always a destination, as well Rudy's Hot Dog in West Toledo, my old neighborhood, which does look shabbier and shabbier.  I do agree that downtown seems to be doing well.  Still, I've heard the hopeful Toledo-is-back talk for a few decades now.  Hope it's finally true!

05/01/2018 - 5:04pm One more vote for Joe's Star

One more vote for Joe's Star Lounge.  Saw the Urbations there every chance I could - great band!  Also have fond memories of dime beer night at Dooley's.  Yes, that used to be a thing.

I also heard he was in my adopted home town of Madison.  And last week a coworker saw the Workaholics guys filming something at Mickie's Dairy Bar - I think they were promoting their new Netflix movie.  And Ders went to UW.  Did not know that.

02/02/2018 - 3:31pm Dooley's

In may day (78-82), it was Dooley's.  Didn't go much, but must've heard Never Been Any Reason by Head East on the sound system each time.  On a winter night, someone decided that peppermint Schnapps shots would be a good idea.  It wasn't and it didn't end well for me.

11/15/2017 - 10:47am Whiskey Jacks Saloon Friday night

I don't have enough points to start my own discussion, but I wanted to pass on some info from the UW Spirit Club of Madison WI.

If you are in Madision Friday night for the game, the Spirit Club is having a meet-up for Michigan fans from 6 pm to 9 pm at Whiskey Jacks Saloon at 552 State Street, which is a campus main drag full for bars and restaurants.  I'm a Madison resident, but won't be able to make it.  Go blue!

So, do we know the status of other visiting locker rooms in the Big Ten?  Is the Purdue rep telling the truth or blowing smoke?  If blowing smoke, I'd hate to see this story die down.  I got nothing against Purdue personally, but if they are guilty as charged, it's pretty disgraceful.

Wow - the "Fuck You! Eat Shit" chant was pretty loud on ESPN - stay classy, Badger fans.

From what I understand (only been there a few times), OSS sometimes changes up what the OSS stands for.  Usually, it's Our Specialty Sausages, but you might go in there and see the employees in tee shirts that say Ohio State Sucks.  And it's yet another place in town that has great deep fried cheese curds.

Thanks for that info!  I see a late night steak sandwich in my future...

The breakfast place is Mickey's Dairy Bar -- a great dive with a pretty long wait on weekend mornings.  Here's more info: http://www.madisonatoz.com/eating-like-a-badger-mickies-dairy-bar.html

08/22/2017 - 1:29pm Madison resident reporting

Madison resident reporting in: a lot of great recommendations in the above comments. Greenbush bakery near the stadium on Regent - get an apple fritter or  rabbi's delight for sugar bliss.  If you are in town on Friday night, jump in your car and get the fish fry at Toby's Supper Club.  Look 'em up online.  Most bars will have fish fries, so you're bound to find one on campus/downtown, if you want that Wisconsin experience.  The Old Fashioned is great, the Tornado Room downtown has the best steak in town (it'll cost ya, though), and Ian's Pizza is better than just late night drunk bar food.  Memorial Union is a great place to hang out and State Street after the game will be crowded with happy or sad drunk Badger fans, depending on how the hometown team fares.  If they are sad, I will be very happy!

In 1978 or 1979, Romero did a Q&A in between a showing of Night of the Living Dead and his then new film (Martin) at a film society screening in an Angell Hall auditorium.  He was funny, gracious, and humble.  Didn't know he came back to solicit comments on Dawn of the Dead.  A top 10 favorite film!

07/10/2017 - 10:10am Free Press memories

During my freshman year at Markley (78-79), my friends and I enjoyed making fun of Bob Talbert's Out of My Mind on Monday Moanin column. We wrote him an insulting letter, which he published.   Also read the funny pages every day (Bloom County, Dick Tracy, Brenda Starr).  I haven't read the FREEP in decades, and I understand the ill will, but I'll still be a little sad when it finally goes away.

03/19/2014 - 12:03pm Also: Real Chili

Another great local place is Real Chili.  What can you get there?  Chili.  With cheese, raw onions, and sour cream.   I don't eat like that anymore (not on a regular basis, at least), but check them out: http://www.realchili-milwaukee.com/

03/19/2014 - 11:33am Ma Fischers!

If you have a hankering for a Monte Cristo sandwich at 3 am, I would direct you to Ma Fischer's 24-hour diner on the near east side.

As for the Points East Pub, when I lived in Milwaukee in the mid to late 90s, they had great live music.  Lots of power pop!  In fact, I saw Ann Arbor's Impatients open up for the Chicago band Green in, I don't know, 1996 or so?   Anybody here know whatever happened to the Impatients?  I think they release only one CD, called Kickball.  It is great.

FYI here's Ma Fischer info, enjoy!   http://mafischersrestaurant.com/

06/22/2012 - 11:43am We just adopted our first dog

We just adopted our first dog from a resuce group, a 19 month old Maltese already named Millie.  The wife and kids liked that name, so I can now claim she is named in honor of Millie Schembechler.  If we work up the courage to get a 2nd dog, and it's a male, I'm going to lobby for "Bo."

04/18/2012 - 3:29pm My wife and I have been

My wife and I have been working our way through The Wire and are about to finish Season 5.  Sad to say, but Season 5 is a disappointment.  Which is a shame, because we both thought the first 4 seasons were some of the best TV we've ever seen.  I don't want spoil anything for those of you haven't seen Season 5, but there are some unrealistic plot developments that kind of ruin the whole season.  Of course, we'll finish it out (3 episodes to go!), but that's only because the first 4 seasons were so good.

03/23/2012 - 9:55am Ian's pizza!

Yes, get the mac n cheese pizza from Ian's on State Street.  Also, add me to the list of people who would recommend the Old Fashioned.  Oh, and Dotty's for a burger!  I live on the near east sde of Madison, so hello to my fellow cheeseheads!  Not a native, grew up in Toledo, Michigan undegrad and some grad school.  Came to WI for law school and never left the state -- no bar exam for in-state grads who practice here!

12/30/2011 - 11:04am My recollection as well.

My recollection as well.  Class of 1982, MA (English lit - good grief, why did I do that?) 1984

D'oh, someone just mentioned Clancy's...

01/17/2011 - 1:40pm What about Clancy's?

No one's mentioned Clancy's Fancy Hot Sauce!  Ann Arbor's own!  I haven't had any since I moved from Ann Arbor in 1984.   Is Clancy's still around?  More Ann Arbor food favories:  late night nachos at the Pantree on Liberty.  Hamburger with a fried egg at Blimpy's.   Club sandwich at the Brown Jug.  As for pizza, I was partial to Bell's.  Alas,  Zingerman's was just getting started, and I would've been too poor to go there...

09/25/2009 - 5:46pm The 1979 game

Ah yes. My sophomore year. The 1979 game versus IU. One of the most exciting finishes in Michigan history. Me? I left at halftime....
