Spot on.  Something like 90% of actively managed funds do worse than Vanguard, while charging you substantial fees to shuffle deck chairs around for you.

Honestly man, unless you're really really good at this stuff, it's unlikley you're going to be able to do better than an index fund over the long haul.  Any information you think is helpful to your analysis is already known and accounted for by the many people doing this professionally, so it's almost certainly already factored into the current price (if the information is even useful at all).

It’s sort of like the NPR pledge drive where you sign up just to make it all stop.

05/14/2018 - 7:06pm My god, people bitch about

My god, people bitch about literally everything on here. Honestly, who cares which network the games are on? You get a football game, played dozens or hundreds of miles from your house, converted into 1s and 0s and then beamed across the goddamn sky, and then converted back to an image while you sit on the couch. Sounds okay to me.

04/23/2018 - 2:23pm It’s not the mere fact of

It’s not the mere fact of customizability—it’s the fact that, presumably, the game would clearly be providing the frame for infringing (126 teams, schedules that likely align to current CFB, conferences that likely fit with current ones once teams are renamed, etc). My guess is that it would be easy to demonstrate that the whole point is facilitating the insertion of real players’ likenesses (unlike madden) and that the game would have no real market value without inserting those likenesses (also unlike madden)

04/23/2018 - 1:42pm Kinda surprised they’re not

Kinda surprised they’re not worried about litigation destroying this. You can’t create a product that is designed wholly to allow users to infringe on others’ IP and expect to be able to shield yourself from liability (i.e. Napster). When the game’s entire marketability will come from users’ entering player likenesses, the players will sue, an and they have a decent precedent to win after O’bannon.

Doesn’t this belong in the “dying industries” thread below?

I keed I keed...

04/21/2018 - 6:17pm Is that necessarily bad?

Is that necessarily bad? Isn’t that just the market saying, “we’re not really interested in paying $200 for senior photos, or $500 for a nice dresser.” It’s not like we’re being hoodwinked—it’s just market forces. If people wanted that high quality expensive stuff they’d pay for it (and some do)

Just for fun, I looked at their schedule.  Their last win away from home was.....December 30.  Yikes.

EDIT: Beaten to the punch by seconds!

Totally agree. Tim Miles knows what an outlier is. He’s just having fun (and is pretty hilarious). I’m still in the Tim Miles fan camp.

How long does a contract with the devil last?  Seems like they've been going on a solid 15 years on theirs.  Tonight it's a banked-in three, bizarre Purdue mishandling of a rebound, and a ridiculous tipped-in layup that got them the win.

02/06/2018 - 8:03pm Sometimes I feel like people

Sometimes I feel like people view his Florida tenure unfairly.  They weren't great, but the dude won his division two of his three years.  Not a great divison, but still.

01/22/2018 - 1:11pm Berych's wins are all very

Berych's wins are all very old, though.  Federer has been totally dominant since 2014.  Berdych can beat anyone when he's playing well, but it'd be a pretty big upset.

That the correct overall, but Berych has won 2 if the last 21 sets they’ve played. Not great bob.

He has a decent shot at the semis, and then I give him about a 0.01% chance against Federer. Some really good matches to come in the upper half of the draw, and least.

I hope someone appreciates this.

01/10/2018 - 7:39pm Honestly, how is everyone so

Honestly, how is everyone so certain pep is such a terrible coach? It’s been one stinkin year. Everyone though borges was an evil genius after year one around here.

01/09/2018 - 8:36am Change in the team's psyche?

Change in the team's psyche?  Half the dudes who seriously played in 2016 aren't even on the team anymore.  There doesn't always have to be a narrative.  The ball didn't bounce our way in the big moments in the tough games during that stretch.  It happens, man.

If you take the record for a bad season, and then cherry pick the most difficult games from the prior season, the overall record is not good. Shocker.

True, but you have to factor in diminishing returns when you get to that level of money.  Even assuming he can make that level of jump, say there's a 5% chance of injury or other circumtances that derail his draft grade if he comes back.  If it were me, I would probably rather have a 100% chance at 13.5M than a 95% chance at 26.5M.  If you invest reasonably, you're never really going to worry too much about money either way.

Obviously, I hope he comes back.

Also what is it with idiots and capitalizing random, non-proper-noun words in the middle of sentences?  Who possibly looks and that and thinks, "Yep, that's right."  How is this a thing???

12/08/2017 - 1:15pm I wish I could say that Matt

I wish I could say that Matt Mann's lack of puncuation prowess (or, you know, actual legal knowledge) indicates he's not a lawyer, but I've sadly dealt with far too many lawyers to think that's true.

Sure.  But Pruitt also has a solid track record as a DC at Georgia and FSU, and is a big-time recruiter.  If you're going to hire a guy whose never been a head coach, this is about as good as it gets (though still a reletively big risk for a blue blood like Tennessee).

I cannot believe any of the “good” schools would agree to that. Especially the ones in the west who have to go up against UM/OSU/PSU. What a huge disadvantage.

I was on. The good ‘ol days! Surprised we’ve made it this far without discussing the WLA yet.

I agree with this take.  I'm hopeful about Newsome's health and Hudson has potential, but I think JBB the #1 returning tackle at this point.

It doesn't bug me much at the games either.  I kind of like the breaks to build anticipation and releive the periods of stress at the game.  I'm also usually thinking something like, "Can I please stay in this cathedral of a stadium for longer please?"

Maybe I'm just weird.

11/28/2017 - 7:30pm I really don’t get all the

I really don’t get all the whining on this subject. Is it really that intolerable to wait through a few breaks in the game? I don’t think I’ve ever been watching a Michigan game and thought, “boy I really wish this would be over sooner.”

11/20/2017 - 5:46pm LOL you couldn't at least

LOL you couldn't disguise your identity as an MSU/OSU troll at least a little bit?  I mean, your other posts are obvious enough, but this one is beyond the pale.

11/16/2017 - 7:01pm That's an extremely difficult

That's an extremely difficult INT to make in man coverage.  His eyes are on the receiver for the whole play until he's able to close the gap and "control" the receiver, as Zordich calls it.  Hard to tell in slow motion, but I think it's only a fraction of a second between when he gets his head around and when the ball arrives.  Not enough time to get his arms up and make the catch.  When you play press man, you're not going to get many INTs on routes like these.

10/20/2017 - 7:47am Hudson

I don't get Hudson's -3 on the 31-yarder.  He's the edge contain player, right?  His primary responsibility is containing the QB.  Maybe he could have been a little less agressive, but it seems to me to be excessive to give him a -3 because he stuck to his responsibility and wasn't able to play both sides of the option in a lot of open space.

I think the real problem is that backside DE (I think Gary) gets blown out by #80 and the cutback lane is wide open, partially because he was slanting playside (so maybe there's some RPS minus to be had here).
