Yeah, we didn't get to see too much of Joburg unfortunately. We stayed in Sandton for a night and then Pretoria for a night (or two..can't recall). Basically did Soweto/Mandela museum and some other site visits. Did have a pretty neat dinner at the Carnivore.
|05/21/2018 - 8:55pm||Stellenbosch is great!||
Stellenbosch is great! Beautiful area.
We were trying to find a hookah bar there. Wandered around for half an hour only to learn hookah in RSA is actually called "hubbly bubbly". Found one right then and got a chuckle.

I took a cable car ride in that little amusement park right on the ocean in downtown Durban. It honestly freaked the hell out of me.

Oh yeah, flights are brutal. We went Chicago to London, London to South Africa (into Joburg, out of Cape Town). About nine hours on first flight, 12 hours on second.

Agreed. My viewpoint on study abroad is that a lot of people are fortunate in that they will visit western Europe in their lives. Therefore, I always recommend people go way out of their comfort zone and study in a place that they likely wouldn't visit otherwise (Africa, China, India, etc.).
|05/21/2018 - 10:43am||Agreed. Have to imagine a||
Agreed. Have to imagine a trip to Robben Island will be in the cards.
Side note - South Africa is a pretty damn dangerous place. Got there and immediately went to get food. We parked, got out of car, and a security guy was wandering around with his gun in hand. A little startling. One of the most blunt things you notice there is how every single piece of property has a fence/wall around it. There is no such thing as a residential street with lawn after lawn...everything is gated off.
I guess it's also dangerous since we were staying in St. Lucia for a night and the attendant told us not to wander down one street at night since hippos are known to wander around...haha.
|05/21/2018 - 10:10am||South Africa is an amazing,||
South Africa is an amazing, confusing, gorgeous, depressing, etc. place. I spent a month there about a decade ago - all over the country - and it's utterly fascinating.
There are a ton of educational opportunities - learning about Apartheid, current social inequality, amazing biodiversity, etc. - so this should be a great trip.
Johannesburg isn't all that great (outside touring Soweto), but Cape Town is incredible. Hope they have a chance to go to Kruger and along the Garden Route.

Over $2 billion dollars annually.
"Our analysis concluded that Michigan residents are $2 billion richer annually due to the operational expenditures by the University, additional earnings as a result of increased human capital of graduates, and the graduate medical education payments that MSU has helped bring to state hospitals. The University provides many more economic benefits that we were able to describe, but not quantify. These include important activities of MSU Extension, the Michigan Agricultural Experiment Station, the Office of Intellectual Property, and departmental and center research conducted throughout the University."

|05/16/2018 - 12:50pm||Someone can correct me, but||
Someone can correct me, but weren't only like 25-30 victims actual MSU students? Weren't a lot of the 300+ in this case people that were assaulted by Nassar elsewhere, but the argument is that MSU should have been on top of this which would have ended his ability to assault elsewhere?
Perhaps that impacts payouts?
|05/16/2018 - 12:48pm||Are you more outraged about||
Are you more outraged about the perceived lack of negative coverage against Izzo/Dantonio or the sexual assault of young women?
|05/14/2018 - 11:42am||I'm not really sure about||
I'm not really sure about that. MSU will probably take a hit, but quite small. It's still a very solid educational option.
The Nassar situation is horrible, but not everybody knows/cares about it. Not everyone considering MSU has that as part of the thought process. Plus we're still six months away from the next class depositing...if nothing really new comes up to a degree Nassar will be "old news".
|05/14/2018 - 11:32am||This is an interesting||
This is an interesting discussion I've had with folks.
UM is of course a fantastic university and does a great job with revenue given out-of-state students attending. Then again, UM is a public school in the state of Michigan that is partially funded by taxpayers. How should UM view that relationship with the state in relation to accepting students from Michigan? How should state gov't view funding a public university if that university focuses so much on out-of-state students?
MSU does a solid job of providing a good education to a huge amount of in-state students (not sure their out-of-state numbers, but I do think they have a high foreign student body).
|05/14/2018 - 11:27am||Yeah. People like to mock||
Yeah. People like to mock MSU here, but they have some really good programs. Think ed school is #1, have #1 nuclear physics grad school, etc. Nassar situation is a debacle, but still many reasons to consider sending a kid there.
|05/14/2018 - 11:22am||There is a big push to get||
There is a big push to get information about skilled trades out to high school students these days. It makes a lot of sense - you don't need to go tens of thousands (if not more) into debt, yet could have a job paying $50k+ more when you are in your early 20's. There is a ton of logic in students considering this path after high school.
|05/10/2018 - 1:32pm||Engler has been taking on||
Engler has been taking on questions/interviews with other outlets at least. Fair to say MSU and ESPN have no love for each other.

|05/07/2018 - 11:37am||Yeah, it's loaded in-state.||
Yeah, it's loaded in-state. UM didn't show interest in Dwan Mathis, but he's MSU's QB commit. Recently got offers from OSU and Oregon. Pretty cool to see the state of Michigan with so much talent.

I'm not sure how I'd rank everyone, but Barnett is really good. Wiltfong said he was as good as anyone at that Opening thing this weekend...and there was a ton of top ranked talent there.

Has UM offered 14 kids before?
|05/06/2018 - 8:36pm||Probably because most high||
Probably because most high school kids don't care about Nassar and it doesn't involve the football program. Plus they've been darn good for a decade and handled UM.
If you're a high school kid in Michigan the better program basically the whole time you've been old enough to follow has been state.

Haha....no. Of course the next 40 shouldn't be in East Lansing. It just seems easier to forgive one back-to-back if you look at context. Going forward it should obviously rotate.

It is kind of funny. MSU has UM/OSU both home or both away every year. Basically the same thing people are saying Delaney screwed UM about. MSU also went to UM and OSU and won to get to playoff...road games are tough, but you gotta step up.

Absolutely. His tone is a little dry, but he's more insightful than the vast majority of analysts. Spare me Rod Allen's blabbering nonsense.
Last night he was talking about a bunch of coaching strategies. Spoke about how when your team is done hitting - and their team is coming up - you have 2.5 minutes between innings to nail down your strategy for exactly what you will do if the first hitter gets on and what you will do if the second hitter gets on. Talked through all the things you have to consider and how much more fast paced the game is when you are managing.
He's always insightful like this - I really enjoy him. Seems like a pretty decent guy too.

Is this in relation to Nassar or OTL?
If Nassar, MSU has already lost their President, AD, had the doctor sentenced, the dean of DO school charged, investigations still continuing, enormous PR hit, hundreds of millions in lawsuits expected, etc.. I don't think anyone at MSU or fan/alum is blind to what is happening there.
Regarding OTL, still not seeing anything that really implicates Dantonio or Izzo in doing something wrong.

What a mess. He didn't play at all this year and can't imagine he's on the team next year. Another bad look for MSU athletics.
Campbell and Sims being in article seems kinda grudgy. The weird war between ESPN and MSU going both ways is odd and continues.
|04/06/2018 - 8:50pm||MSU has not done a good job||
MSU has not done a good job with PR during all of this, but ESPN should not have reported the name before the charges. Not a good precedent to set.

|02/22/2018 - 10:54am||Has it been proven that||
Has it been proven that allegations were swept under the rug?
If yes, is there proof that Izzo and/or Dantonio had a hand in it?
|02/21/2018 - 10:03pm||I understand that. But,||
I understand that. But, again, multiple entities found the students did not commit a crime.
I'm not clear Izzo did anything wrong in not administering punishment. It seems like a dangerous precedent to punish student athletes in this scenario - say a couple game suspension - when the case would become public knowledge and the allegation would be known despite no charges being pressed.
|02/21/2018 - 9:41pm||That cop was a former cop||
That cop was a former cop that was then associate AD. I don't see anything saying he was a current officer having legal power over this case.

|02/21/2018 - 6:13pm||Yeah, if something comes out||
Yeah, if something comes out that Izzo personally pushed/bribed/whatever to make sure they weren't charged he should absolutely be fired.
Otherwise, multiple entities investigated the players and cleared them. I don't think anybody would expect Harbaugh or Beilein to dismiss a player if they are accused of a crime that is investigated and they are exonerated.
|02/21/2018 - 6:05pm||Why should he have been fired||
Why should he have been fired at that point?
His players were under investigation...not charged or convicted of anything.
