If Dan Gilbert actually wanted to start an MLS team Detroit would have gotten one. The problem is, he didn't, so when the Fords offered up the use of Ford Field, it allowed him to make it look like he was still trying to acquire an MLS team while also more or less guaranteeing MLS wouldn't award him one. It meant he could still pursue the jail site without actually having to start a soccer team, and it worked.

I think this is fine. We’re playing one P5 non-conference game a year, and every one is against a team that will be either a fun road trip or bring a decent crowd to Ann Arbor. The most significant factor in making the playoffs is winning the Big Ten. Do that without losing 2 games and you’re in the playoffs.

03/07/2018 - 8:48pm I'm totally fine with them

I'm totally fine with them retiring Burke's 3, but only if they also raise a banner for Katelynn Flaherty. She wore the same number and has the most points in school history. Would be really cool if they retired the number program-wide for both players.

I've been listening to his podcast every week and it is very entertaining. He talks the week's Michigan game with John Wangler most weeks. He's extremely candid. Listening to that and the Harbaugh podcast back to back is a pretty good time. Obviously I love the Harbaugh podcast because I am invested in it, but if I were to only recommend one to a neutral, it'd be Miles.

Major case of burying the lede here: ALL BIG TEN TOURNAMENT GAMES ARE GOING TO BE AT CAMPUS SITES!! Finally, a good decision by Big Ten Hockey. Three weekend tournament, opening with three best-of-three series (2 v 7, 3 v 6, 4 v 5) with the regular season champion getting a bye. Regular season champ and highest remaining other seed host a single-elimination semi, then the next weekend higher seed hosts a single elimination final. Awesome!

It sucks that Michigan just announced one of the coolest developments for its non-conference basketball schedule in several years and all y'all can do is bitch that WD posted it.

I'd like this to become an annual thing, with the Wolverines and Spartans anchoring and a rotating cast of Detroit/Oakland/Eastern/Western/Central.

04/12/2017 - 2:41pm Other people have covered the

Other people have covered the baseball (they're seriously really good this year), and the Hands on Museum. Just walking to the Big House is always a good time.

As far as restaurants, I just had a really good meal with my girlfriend's sister and her kids at Arbor Brewing. Good kids menu, and the waitstaff was super sweet and good with the kids. The kids wanted to keep their faygo glass bottles and the dude went and washed them out first. It's the little things, yanno?

Other than that, any of the big cheap Ann Arbor institutions would probably be great. Cottage Inn, Mr. Spots, Blimpy's, Pizza Bob's, Fleetwood. All have kid-friendly food and won't break the bank. Should all be relatively busy on a Friday night, but maybe that's part of the experience.

Best of luck to your family and the little one.

I'm rooting for MinnU later. Everyone's very hot on Atlanta and while obviously they appear to be a model expansion franchise, I think people are getting a little ahead of themselves. MinnU feel like plucky underdogs.

USA U-20 Men play Honduras for the CONCACAF U-20 Championship at 4. It will be on Facebook Live, go to facebook and search CONCACAF. Stream quality has been pretty good over Chromecast all tournament.

Does it ever seem to you that there is an unusually high level of Tofees fandom among Michigan fans? I've been thinking of trying to set up periodic Ann Arbor Evertonian meetups. I wouldn't want to do it every game like some Evertonian clubs do, but itd be cool if it happened a few times a season.

02/28/2017 - 12:58pm Went to Dimo's on Stadium

Went to Dimo's on Stadium this morning. 20 minute line, they only had two flavors left when I got to the front of it, and goddamn it was the best packzi I've ever had. Raspberry. Mmmm. The girlfriend is gonna try to stop there on her way to work before they close to see if she can't snag one of their late-day apple or blueberry ones. Also someone at work brought some, but I don't know where they're from.

The coney Packzi would require me to go to American and why the fuck would I do that

02/28/2017 - 11:16am MLS is a fun league and that

MLS is a fun league and that is enough for me. It is fun watching a fifth league come up and try to challenge the bigger American sports. Its fun being part of this weird little subculture of fans of American soccer. The leage has characters, and a focus on fan culture that is not unlike College Football. League quality is improving and most of the people who complain about league quality are more than happy to watch Fun Belt football on Tuesday nights.

I think Atlanta will probably make some noise and will be really sucessful off the field, but the on-field product is probably overhyped for now.

I root for Red Bull, so its going to be an interesting year. Hoping we can hand Atlanta a loss in their first ever match.

02/28/2017 - 10:59am Last night the USA U-20s beat

Last night the USA U-20s beat Mexico for the first time in 31 years in the 2nd stage of the CONCACAF Championship. Win or draw with El Salvador on Friday, we go to the U-20 World Cup. Win and we go to the Tournament finals (also possible with certain types of draws). Mexico and El Salvador play Wednesday, and if they split points (or SLV wins), we go through to the World Cup before Friday's match is even played. The U-20's looked shaky early in the tournament, losing to hosts Panama, but have really fought since then and look like they're a threat to win the thing.

All games on Facebook Live, search CONCACAF, stream quality is pretty good!

MLS, which is very fun if admittedly not always good, is in the preseason. I've watched a couple of the games (watched the first ever Antlanta United game which was pretty fun, watched my Red Bulls beat NYCFC), but I wouldn't subject anyone else to that.

I like it, but I think it'd be more interesting to play teams every other year. Basically, I would propose it goes Year 1, Year 3, Year 2, Year 4, with venues adjusted for teams you play every year.

01/31/2017 - 5:01pm I follow MLS very closely,

I follow MLS very closely, and I do not think this is going to happen. There are currently 9 cities bidding for 2 spots (with another 2 coming somewhere down the road), and I think there are bids that are just further along than Detroit's, especially if it takes them longer than they expect to secure the jail site (or they fail to secure the jail site). It is important that MLS puts another team in the midwest, but Cincinnati and Indianapolis are closer to being 100% ready to support an MLS team, and St. Louis may have an opening with the departure of the Rams.

If Gilbert and Gores secure the jail site on a much quicker timeline than I'm expecting, then maybe Detroit shoots up the list. One thing that's important to understand: Even if they secure the jail site there is not a guarantee that that leads to an MLS club. They could get the site and still lose out to other midwestern cities. It's really hard to tell how they might spread out the new clubs geographically. With a gun to my head, I'd say the new clubs are Cincy, San Diego, Tampa Bay, and Sacramento, I don't know which two will come first. But following MLS is wild and anything can change at any time.

Here is a decent summary: http://sbisoccer.com/2017/01/mls-expansion-roundup-prospective-teams-ma…

01/30/2017 - 10:49am The commencement website

The commencement website suggests that tickets are all reserved seating. Does anyone know how strictly this is enforced? I am a local in a program with A LOT of internationals who I can probably get extra tickets from, but it's only worth it if my family can actually sit together. I only NEED 4 (grad students only get 4), but would be much happier with something like 6-8.

Zingerman's isn't a deli. Its a sandwich place. Don't get me wrong, it's a good sandwich place, but as a dude who grew up in metro Detroit eating sandwiches as big as my head made by elderly Jewish men, Zingerman's doesn't cut it. Maize and Blue is the best place to get a good Jewish-style deli sandwich on campus. Also worth considering is the Bread Basket in Ypsi, as it is part of a chain of good Jewish delis. If you're familiar with Big Al's on Woodward its the same chain.

This year I have attended my first two games as a neutral, [email protected], and the MAC Championship the other day (though I wasn't quite a true neutral for the MAC game #RTB). In general, I highly recommend attending football games as a neutral. Lots of fun, low stress. I just figure I might as well go to as many football games in my life as I can. Already looking at the 2017 bye week to see what game I might be able to go to then (If WMU's MAC opener is at home I'll probably go to that).

12/01/2016 - 11:33am I don't know why "It'd be

I don't know why "It'd be nice if small sports weren't scheduled at the same time as football games, and it'd be nice if the two biggest winter sports didn't play home games at the same time" is being treated like a crazy opinion. People would rather trash WD than address that these things are unideal. Lots of people have hockey and basketball tickets, many of those people are students, scheduling games at the same time is unfair for those people. I am sure there are reasonable factors that lead to things being at the same time, and I am also sure if they really decided to make scheduling harmony across sports a priority, it could lead to more Michigan fans going to more Michigan sporting events.

11/30/2016 - 3:10pm Going to be there. Very

Going to be there. Very interested in how the attendance is, especially among the students. I'll consider this something of a bellwether game to see how early I have to show up to the lesser B1G games to actually get a spot in the Maize Rage. Think I'm gonna show up around 6 and hope I get a wristband. Last year with a few key exceptions showing up an hour early would have been fine. Not sure if people have noticed yet that this year we're sort of good.

Obviously if you're playing a game like this you don't want to lose, but the fact is these games are pretty low-stakes. This should happen a lot more often, big schools playing mid-major in-state teams. I'd love it if Michigan played one of Eastern, Western, Central, Oakland or Detroit at their places every year. Would be fun to visit all those different stadiums, and see the team in a different environment while getting the guys a little early-season road expereince. Most years playing those teams would be better for our RPI than some of the crap early-season scheduling we've had.

11/09/2016 - 3:30pm The Solid Verbal is

The Solid Verbal is incredible. Recently they mentioned that they started the podcast by thinking about the type of college football podcast they would want to listen to, and that's exactly it. Smart but not overly technical, funny but not joke-focused.

I also am a fan of MLive's Wolverine Beat, but I think a lot of people around here are not as big of fans. I think that because they are both outsiders to Michigan fandom they offer a perspective we don't often hear. This is obviously a unique situation, but this summer when I went full weeks without internet access, being able to download TWB to catch up on news was really useful.
