OK, I can't stop giggling. That first clip of the Bearcat defense jogging in pursuit just kills me.
And in a couple other clips it looks like the linebackers are trying to get traction in bowling shoes.
|08/04/2017 - 3:56pm||Plunkett||
Very sad to hear--Jim Plunkett was my first sports hero.
After Stanford football games he had to run to the locker room (which was separate from the football stadium) through a gauntlet of kids (including me) seeking autographs. Eventually he started running through the Stanford band as cover because he was just too damn popular!
It was Plunkett-to-Vataha in every sandlot game.
We moved East the same year he was drafted by the Patriots and they were my new favorite team. It was hard to watch him get crushed very Sunday. I'm sure it felt worse to him.

I played a photographer in Ides of March. George Clooney directed and asked to look at my camera to see if it was the one making lots of noise. It wasn't. Marisa Tomei was behind me in the scene that took a couple hours to shoot. Went outside for a phone break and Philip Seymour Hoffman joined me to smoke. And almost had a head-on collision with Ryan Gosling as I rushed off an elevator he was rushing on to. We both did the startled "oops, sorry" thing. Fun day, I got paid, and I'm onscreen for about 7 seconds (and only Clooney is larger in that shot).

|04/24/2017 - 3:19pm||St. Joe @ Berrien Springs||
Not scenic, and often filled with riff-raff, but one of the most interesting places to fish in Michigan is below the Berrien Springs dam on the St. Joe. You never know what you'll hook.
There are spots to fly fish, especially when the river is low and you can wade to the center island, but flies or wobble-glos on spinning gear is the best way to go.
At this location, I've caught steelhead (summer run skamania & winter/spring run to about 12 lbs), chinook (to about 20 lbs), coho (3-4 lbs), atlantic salmon (only once--a 12 lb fish), browns (to about 10 lb), lake trout (early winter they come up to spawn, up to 35 lbs), as well as walleye and bass.
When I want solitude and nature, I head to the Pere Marquette, but the St. Joe is fun and you can be on the water in 2 hrs 15 mins from Ann Arbor.

I'll miss Irvin and enjoyed his many contributions, but damn if he didn't give me a heart attack every time he tried to dribble. At least the neighborhood won't hear me yelling "stop dribbling!" as much in the future.
|03/28/2017 - 5:25pm||Go Blue||
My dad accepted a position at Michigan and we moved to A2 in 1978. His two conditions before accepting were an electron microscope and 4 season tickets to UM football. Turns out the tickets were the tougher request.
Ricky Leach was my first Michigan gridiron hero, though I still owned a few Stanford #16 shirts after growing up with Plunkett.

As a CB? No. But I would have loved to see Johnson as a scat back option at Michigan.
I watched him play a few times and he was--at times--untouchable. In the 2016 game against Saline he was the best player on the field. He had 285 yards on just 13 rushes. He was impressive against King as well.

Seem unlikely. It doesn't look like a direct hit to anyone's head, then the marlin snaps off its bill while thrashing around on the deck. No one is still there on the deck.
I was an official observer for a billfish tourament at Oregon Inlet, NC. Got to see several white marlin landed but no big blue marlin on my boat. Fun times though.

My favorite play of the Harbaugh era was the double-WR-screen fake and TE pass up the middle.
I've been waiting patiently since then to see it again. Maybe it was tailored to something BYU--and only BYU does--but if Harbaugh asks me I'm pushing for it.

Last night Romine came in the play third base as a defensive replacement.
First batter of the 9th inning hits a routine ground ball to Romine, who bobbles it briefly and then lobs a throw to first base. The runner beats it by a half step. If Romine throws it hard the runner is out, but he lolli-popped it casually to first.
They called it a hit but it should have been an error (because of the bobble). Castellanos makes that play 10 times out of 10. Play Castellanos not Romine!
