yes it's a national story, national impact, makes the whole state look bad, makes our government look bad if we can't stand up to msu, and also costs our taxpayers a bunch of money to pay that $500m. it's reasonable to care

bring in the taint team.

no, not you, dr. nassar. you stay right where you are.

06/21/2018 - 1:25pm at some point i believe i…

at some point i believe i learned that just copying an attorney on a communication and claiming privilege doesn't necessarily make it privileged.  i believe it has to be communication that somehow qualifies as seeking and/or providing legal advice.  can't remember if i learned that at a workplace training or during the trump investigation news cycle.

although it's probably rarely questioned if a document is marked with privilege.  not worth the hassle to get a special review of every document to determine privilege.

06/21/2018 - 1:15pm not a bug, but is there…

not a bug, but is there something with the new platform that's changing the content posting times? it seemed on the old site that new posts generally showed up around noon, or just before.  I thought this was smart because of all the old curmudgeons like me who wanted to get caught up at lunch time.

maybe it's just offseason, or fighting new site fires, or who knows what else, but it seems like new posts are going up mid-late afternoon and into the evening a lot of times now.  not the biggest deal but i was curious if it's related to the new platform.

also wanted to just chime in that my biggest issue with the mobile site is that the board takes too much effort to get to.  i used to be able to zoom in on the board feed on the right hand side in mobile to see the new posts.  the new "adaptive responsive" design means the board is hidden behind the menu on mobile.  1. click menu 2. click mgoboard dropdown 3. click mgoboard again 4. scroll down past the 5 stickies to see the newest post.

also i'm not sure why the top content on mobile, which fills the screen, is the 2nd newest post instead of the newest, and why it's just a link you have to follow to read the content.

personally i keep updated here daily so i'd love the newest post.  but i understand if it makes the most sense to have it be something else.  but either way i just want to scroll and read.  not click another link and wait for another page to load.

06/21/2018 - 1:05pm nice job team! we could win…

nice job team! we could win this thing outright!

on the cfbrisk subreddit i see all this sunshine and roses between michigan and florida and not caring who wins as long as the alliance wins.

how confident are we that they won't turn on us for the last 2 or 3 turns and try to take a commanding lead at the end?

how confident am i that we won't do the same?  it seems the optimal strategy is to turn on the alliance with 2 turns to go.  they won't be defending against us and we'll take a shipload of territory, and then if we spread out our defense on the last turn, they won't be able to take it all back.  then we win.

i still think we should have ended clemson about 6 turns ago, although i do understand they've been a good lil buddy.

strange to see nebraska falling apart - what happened, did their participation just tank or what?

06/20/2018 - 2:04pm whenever i'm tempted to…

whenever i'm tempted to criticize someone behind a camera or microphone, i try to remember 2 things:

1. it's not for nothing that they've risen to the top of their profession.  maybe some people criticize cowherd but they'd turn the radio off immediately if he was replaced by almost any of the less accomplished personalities at lower tiers.  in other words, he's a talented broadcaster/personality regardless if you like his takes.  your alternative might be the "boom goes the dynamite" guy.

2. their paycheck earning job is to talk non-stop for hundreds or thousands of hours a year. and in this day and age, every second of that is recorded and can go viral in an instant.  so of course in that environment they are going to say a bunch of dumb things, wrong things, controversial things, etc. and they're all on tape. not to mention someone of cowherd's stature who is a national personality and expected to know every detail, every player and coach and their performance, about every sport.  They are required to have an opinion about everything, unlike your local talkers who can mainly cover the local teams and be fine.

media personalities know it's a losing battle, especially in sports where taking a side on something pisses off the other 99% of fans in that sport who aren't fans of that person/team/take.  so ask any fanbase anywhere and a lot of them will remember something negative cowherd said about their team and say he sucks.

i'm not really a big sports chatter consumer but i've never had a huge problem with cowherd.  i get a little weary of his big pregnant pauses.  he could talk a bit faster.  but no big issues.

06/15/2018 - 10:43am it's worth mentioning that…

it's worth mentioning that we have a reasonable shot to win the game.  most territories owned after july 3 wins.  we are within throwing distance of the lead and have double the number of players as the next two teams.  let's rally and win this thing!

I love the Roku.  But be sure to get the right one for your needs. They change the model numbers and names all the time, so you can just compare here

Namely, if you want it to do 4k streaming instead of 1080p you'll need a specific model.

06/13/2018 - 3:46pm unfortunately, when…

unfortunately, when grammarians throw in the towel and stick something in the dictionary, it in fact does make it right.  I hate it too, but that's how it works.  The rulebook follows actual usage as it evolves, in language's case, not the other way 'round.

06/13/2018 - 2:52pm Hm i think i like the…

Hm i think i like the transfer rule change, its generally stupid for a school to say you cant talk to another school because i dont like them.

Im not as sure as everyone else on the redshirt rule. Whats the point of it? 4 games seems like a lot of trying out a player to see if they are ready.  This will turn into using redshirt players to expand your roster during important games, not a chance to try out some freshmen during the non-conf season.

06/13/2018 - 8:56am trivia for the kiddies. …

trivia for the kiddies.  Jeff George Sr. was the #1 draft pick by the Indianapolis Colts.  Played 3 terrible seasons for the Colts, including some drama about refusing to come to work for a while in his third year.  The Colts then replaced him with.....Jim MF Harbaugh

bought a ford focus for cheap during cash for clunkers. it's been a great car for 9 years, but turns out it doesn't have a cabin air filter.  wish it did, it blows all the outside odors right in your face.  the goat poop smell from my backyard mini goats stayed in there for years.

yeah man that's where shaq plays duh.

05/24/2018 - 1:43pm nothing to see here

article just says the magic are interested.  not that izzo is interviewing, or wants to leave, or even cares that they are interested.

reminds me of the constant stream of "harbaugh back to nfl" articles that get published.  fake news.  good job freep.

if he agrees to interview, then there's a story.

05/16/2018 - 3:53pm It’s confusing

It doesn’t say the territory name, it just shows the native schools logo.

Click the attack button next to the blue husky dog logo.

Next time you can click a territory, and then on the box on the left below the map it will show the logo and the name of the territory is at the bottom of the box where it says “Connecticut Wiki”. That’s the best way I found to link the territory name to the logo.

05/16/2018 - 3:49pm It’s the median value, not the average.

Remembering middle school math, median is the middle value in an ordered list. So there are 5 categories, you need at least 3 categories to be at 3 stars or above to get a 3 Star median. In other words it’s the 3rd highest category ranking you have.

Easiest way seems to explore links. That’s 5 in one category. Get 50 karma, that’s 3 in a second category. Third category is either awards, age on r/cfb, or playing 10 turns.

If you are new to r/cfb and don’t have a long posting history there, you are stuck basically waiting to get to 10 turns played in the game.

05/16/2018 - 12:33pm increase your karma on r/cfb

05/15/2018 - 12:20pm i agree on the loss of simplicity.

it's like an airplane cockpit in there these days.  Not to mention under the hood - we've lost an entire generation of hobbyist garage mechanics.  i also concur that a $100 transponder key is crazy.

But my gripes are:  the prices.  It's just insane that a basic family sedan is $30k or more.  average family can't save that easily, this is why they sell 72, even 80 month loans now. the benefit of course is that cars now are very reliable and can easily last for 7+ yrs if you don't wreck it.

and my other gripe - is the sameness.  I assume this is somewhat due to regulations that require certain features and lights and windows etc.  But it's wild that so many cars across brands look so alike.  Is it regulation or consumer preference?  yuck.  give me some variety.

to temper my complaints, i do like the advances in cars that i'm complaining about.  the reliability, the doors that unlock as i walk up to the car, the controls and convenience and comfort that come with all the tech options in the dash.  So I'm griping because you asked me to but truth be told, i like the features in most cases.

Did anyone actually click the link? Judging by the photo on the page, MSU accomplished this by tricking their incoming freshmen into thinking they were going to Michigan.  Or maybe Syracuse.  Maize and Blue! And Orange!

05/10/2018 - 3:42pm instructions

1. Sign up for reddit if you don't have an account at  Verify it if you need to.  Sign in to reddit.  Most people make a junk username for reddit to stay anonymous.

2. Go to and look for the link on the right -hand side that says "select flair."  Go set your flair to Michigan.  Alternatively go to set it directly.

3. Go to and go through the process of turning on the game.  Then when you see the page with the map, make sure your Team Info box has Michigan in it, then scroll down past the map and simply click the attack or defend button of your choice.  The logos next to the attack/defend buttons do not represent teams, but they represent the name of the territory.  So, if you attack UMass, that means you are casting your vote for Michigan to attack the Umass territory, even though it is currently occupied by virginia tech.

4. when you cast your vote, the left hand box at the top of the page that says "today's action" will update from a question mark to the logo of the territory you chose to attack/defend

by middle school and high school all i wanted was a camaro.

05/07/2018 - 3:39pm hoping for the best

Yeah, I hope the best for Shea and the team, but I guess after how high everyone's been on him, I was just surprised by that really ugly stat about Bama/LSU. not having looked at his stats in depth, I just figured the high hopes and expectations from the experts would have been somewhat more tempered with something like that hanging on his record.  what do i know.

05/07/2018 - 3:20pm casual observer

Shea suddenly went from 5-star-top-rated-QB-in-his-recruiting-class-savior-of-Harball-at-UM to threw-5-INT-and-0-TD-against-LSU-and-Bama

I mean i don't follow everything so closely, but it feels like my optimism just got knocked down a few flights of stairs.

05/07/2018 - 1:58pm only quickly perused the rules

but doesn't that mean that chaos is sort of destined to become bigger and bigger and eventually win?

05/07/2018 - 1:47pm balance the discussion

i'm sure the comments about people making your life difficult are right, but there are other considerations.  Namely, it's a good way to get some exercise.  It's a great way to support youth sports.  Maybe a little extra money.  Also, it's a great outlet for people to combine their interests in athletics and precision, fairness, justice, and sportsmanship.  In other words, if your mind acts like a judge and your body acts like an athlete, you might get a lot of satisfaction out of it.

My father in law ref'ed high school basketball for 30+ years, he says the talking back definitely got worse, but there's a great need for refs and the key is to Sell the Call.  Put on a big display when you make a call and be convincing.

05/07/2018 - 10:19am good question on the really tall guys

I suppose also for the tall gals as well.

but I assume this is just a life long issue that they learn to deal with.  The bed will never be long enough.

Although even the twin XL size has a diagonal of 7-5 so most beds should be big enough for most folks on the diagonal.

05/07/2018 - 9:54am always check the actual study

Couple researcher friends who have had their studies hit the mass media tell me that the news reports never really accurately portray what the study actually says.

I looked at the study, and in general it seems like it found exactly what you'd expect:

1. People who grew up in a rural agricultural environment are more uncomfortable in urban stress situations than those who grew up in an urban environment.

2. Growing up in an urban environment may make people less relaxed in general and less able to recover from stressful situations.

The way the study measured stress was to put participants through the TSST, which is a lab test designed to create stress.  They tell the participant to prepare a 5 minute presentation for a job interview.  Then right before they go to present, they take their notes away and tell them to present it without notes.

Guess who is more likely to be stressed out by this?  People who grew up on a farm.  But maybe it's not because of the farm.  It might be because the city dwellers have been prepared for a moment like this through their schooling, their job searches, etc.

Other takeaways:  it's cool to know that farm kids more quickly recover from stressful things.

It's common sense that highly urbanized kids (on average) grow up in a more physically sanitized environment that puts a high value on social interaction skills and also on preparing for things like presentations and job interviews.  Not to say that rural kids don't get this too, but the cultural value placed on it may be different (on average).

I grew up around farms, although my family didn't farm - I was more the book nerd type and so were my folks.  And thinking about it, it's hard for me to recall my childhood and adolescence being very stressful at all.  The pace was slow, the routine was consistent, I was pretty healthy even though my house was dirty and my environment was full of dirt, grass, mud, skinned knees, pickup ball games, corn, cows, sheep, soybeans, turkeys.  And being in nature does take me back to my happy place.  When I moved to city life in my 20s, of course it was faster pace and more stressful and I had to learn to adapt.  This all feels pretty obvious to me.

My kids are toddlers and I notice even with them, they relax and focus and smile more when they are playing outside in nature.

So it may not be the animals, exactly, that make the difference.   it may be the way the study was designed and the general difference in growing up urban and rural.

05/07/2018 - 9:27am sounds like a 1% problem

in my experience most dorm beds are the XL twin size which is longer than the regular twin. Plenty long enough for a 6 foot 2 guy.  Call the campus housing dept to check, and if he needs the longer size i'm sure they'll be willing to accommodate.

EDIT: OP didn't mention if their kid is going to UM or not, but this site indicates UM dorms use the XL twin size as a standard.

Also don't forget part of the college experience is the shitty dorm life.  The omg-thats-so-horrible change of going from a full size to a twin size bed is part of the whole thing.

trust me your son won't be the guy wandering up and down the hall griping about having a twin bed.

I suppose the really big guys - 6-8 and above, do what they've always done, and always will do...fold their legs up a bit while they sleep.  college or no college, regular beds and blankets will never be long enough for these guys and they just learn to make do.

05/03/2018 - 1:43pm NFL teams are risk-averse

NFL teams don't have to win to make ungodly profits.  With TV rights, revenue sharing, and public officials giving them free stadiums, the name of the game is DON'T DISRUPT THE GRAVY TRAIN.

Very few things put the whole gravy train at risk.  A politically-charged player who boycotts the anthem and causes ticket sales to tank is one.  A player who might actually die on the field is another.

So NFL teams will only ever make SAFE investments. Different coaches and players come with different upside potential on wins, but no team is going to take someone who might bring the whole kingdom down a notch or two with a heart explosion.

I can't really blame them, but I hope that if Mo wants to play, and is good enough to, he's given the opportunity.

05/03/2018 - 11:46am serious question

What really happened to Drevno?  He's had a good track record coaching OL, it's not like you just forget how to do that.

He's a good scapegoat, but I suspect the real issue was more organizational with Drev + Frey and Drev trying to be an OC, rather than him just suddenly turning into a poor OL coach.

Warriner probably brings improvement to the unit simply by being focused and dedicated to the OL.  Simplifying is probably good too. Fingers crossed.

05/01/2018 - 10:38am good find OP

good high value content in this post and it's not even a repost.

side note:  turn on youtube closed captions.  "Shay" Patterson.  Google is an AI leader but speech to text has a ways to go.

04/30/2018 - 10:22am not sure why i love this suggestion so much

i mean i'm not into seeing other dudes wizzing, but when they put in the water free urinals it felt like something was lost.

04/30/2018 - 10:17am people are getting larger

I'd like to see a realistic seat size in the bleacher section.  I bought some seats in the endzone bleachers last year on the second hand market and the seat numbers were painted what seemed like about 13 inches apart.  it was obvious that all the "regulars" (maybe season tickets?) were casting some serious side-eye at my buddy (180 pounds) and me (admittedly quite a bit more than 180) for taking up more than our share of space although we really tried to keep it within our bounds.

don't get me wrong, i relish the experience of being crammed in like sardines and I agree with the people saying let's get even MORE folks in.

but the bleacher seats were sized up in a time when the world was, er, leaner.

04/27/2018 - 4:32pm exchange?

The word "egregious" must carry some significance in the process of NCAA violations or potential court cases involving Ole Miss.  It's apparently worthwhile for Ole Miss lawyers to negotiate this word out of the case record by dangling the carrot.

OK cool, Shea, welcome to the world of legal wrangling.  Change the word, move on with your life, score a lot of points at UM.

04/27/2018 - 9:38am Rising Fortunes in A2

Shea will elevate the competition and performance of the whole QB group!  Glad the NCAA did something for once with the student athlete in mind.
