06/07/2018 - 10:14am Our quarterback was drafted…

Our quarterback was drafted by a Major League Baseball team as a third baseman? Thanks for the Drew Henson flashbacks.

06/04/2018 - 8:12am Do you think

Speight regressed in 2017 or was the o-line just that much worse? That’s been the offseason debate in my circle of friends, and I’d be curious to see what others think. I’ll hang up and take my answer off the air.

05/25/2018 - 10:21am In another report,

Michigan State ranked among the top 10 U.S. colleges for producing the most Dollar Menunaires.

05/21/2018 - 4:42pm FWIW,

God Shammgod went to Providence.

05/17/2018 - 2:43pm In that case,

I'm looking forward to it. So in what ways is Athens similar to AA?

05/17/2018 - 2:16pm Echoing what others have said...

Clemson has an amazing gameday environment. I walked through town to the stadium, following the Tiger paws on the street toward campus. The place reminded me of Ann Arbor in some ways. The folks are friendly, and the atmosphere is electric. You'd have to try pretty hard to walk through the tailgate area without somebody patting you on the back and handing you a cold beer. Another stadium on my bucket list is Sanford Stadium in Athens (which unfortuntately was also on Otis Reese's bucket list). I kind of want to see a game at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo because the scenery is breathtaking, but I'm guessing the tailgating at BYU leaves something to be desired.

05/17/2018 - 1:43pm Avitar checks out.

Avitar checks out.

05/15/2018 - 2:49pm At the “Risk” of arousing anger on this board,

I must ask what we should do here - Defend the United States or attack the USSR?!?

05/13/2018 - 9:04am For the record,

I’m joking. It’s more of a social comment on how we dissect every playcall on this board, and now that people on this board are the ones making actual strategy decisions, I’m subjecting you to what you dish out every autumn. Risk isn’t for me, but I’m truly glad to see everyone having such a good time passing the offseason.

05/13/2018 - 8:54am If it’s all the same to you,

I’m gonna Leroy Jenkins my way over to the U.P. and liberate the motherland.

05/12/2018 - 3:54pm Congrats

on losing the entire state of Michigan. Is our MGoRisk strategist on the hot seat for getting his/her ass handed to him/her in-state? Great job snaring Delaware though.

05/11/2018 - 11:47am Texas now owns my part of the U.P.

But feel free to keep hammering away at the Northeast. It’s not like us Yoopers can liberate ourselves with this 56K dial-up Internet we’re stuck with. And, BTW, our scouts inform us Buckeye fans appear to be using Mackinaw Island the same way they use their coolers on game day. So if you’re not too busy, could you at least airdrop some AOL free trial discs somewhere between Hancock and Toivola?

05/10/2018 - 10:53am The limits on satellite camps

hurts prospects way more than it hurts major college programs, in my opinion. What unlimited camps provided was exposure for the kids who may have been overlooked during the recruiting process for a variety of reasons. I'm not talking about 4- or 5-star guys here - I'm talking about the 1- and 2-star kids who caught the eye of a major college coach who then called up a former assistant or a buddy at a smaller school and said, "take a look at this kid." Getting some early face time with a prospect in Georgia, Florida or Alabama may have helped Michigan get its foot in the door with a few kids, but Aubrey Solomon didn't go to Michigan because of a satellite camp - he went because of what a Michigan degree can do for him beyond his football career.

05/10/2018 - 10:44am Of course, in the SEC

amount of pay is certainly a factor in recruiting.

05/09/2018 - 2:24pm The Process

doesn't work in the NFL like it does in the NBA, where three or four consecutive lottery picks or one big free agent signing can change the entire face of your team. You only need five guys on the floor at a time in the NBA. In football, you need to be solid at 22 starting positions before you even begin to address special teams or building depth to account for the higher occurance of injury in the NFL.

The closest example of an NFL team changing its fortunes primarily via the draft is the Dallas Cowboys of the early 1990s, and they had plenty of help from Minnesota. The Cowboys required a flurry of draft picks that came from an historically short-sighted trade with the Vikings, and even then, Dallas had to hit a home run on virtually every one of those picks to turn things around.

More often than not, there are no shortcuts to becoming a perennial contender in the NFL. It takes a keen eye evaluating talent, acquiring that talent via the draft, free agency and the waiver wire and having a coaching staff with the vision to build a system that best utilizes what you've got on the roster. In short, do what the Patriots do, not what the Sixers did.

05/08/2018 - 2:25pm Exactly.

The first four scenarios you can chuckle at. The last one you have to respect.

05/08/2018 - 10:52am There are only five reasons to wear that outfit.

1. If you're starting a cult.

2. If you're creating jawdropping illusions onstage in a high-end casino.

3. If you're scheming to steal half the world's plutonium in an outlandish effort to murder a superhero.

4. Your short program at Nationals is choreographed to the James Bond theme.

5. The supermodel who lays your clothes out promises to do unspeakable things once you get home from the Met Gala.

05/07/2018 - 3:34pm We have a real chance to beat Ohio State at this game

because it doesn’t have referees.

05/04/2018 - 1:25pm This board today...

What a train wreck. Everyone hates the new Star Wars movies because they aren’t able to see them for the first time through the eyes of an 8-year-old, Michigan Football is embroiled in some sort of a hostile land grab competition on Reddit and now this call for Maize & Blue guilt. Yikes. Everyone have a good weekend.

05/04/2018 - 10:17am Hail! Hail!

To Michigan, the champions of ... Reddit?

05/02/2018 - 3:09pm I once watched Brett Favre

get hit so hard in a game against the Steelers that he ran over to the sideline and threw up before promptly returning to the field and throwing a touchdown pass to Antonio Freeman on the next play. His 297 consecutive games played streak will never be eclipsed in my book because it happened in the days when they played full-contact, tackle football. I hate the Packers with a passion, but I can't deny his greatness.

05/02/2018 - 12:08pm SEC/OSU

Now THERE’S an unholy alliance. The Axis of Ignorance.

05/02/2018 - 9:34am Good morning!

You’re on swap shop...

04/29/2018 - 9:35pm I know Marty a little bit.

We’ve shared a few NASCAR press boxes and a rain-delay conversation or two over the years. He paid his dues in print media. He’s been thorough, accurate and fair every step up the ladder. When ESPN gave him a chance to do brief on-air spots from the track during SportsCenter, he grabbed the opportunity by the throat. That led to more opportunities, which he has capitalized on without fail. What’s amazing is that he’s still the same down-to-earth guy he was when he was writing for a little newspaper in Virginia nobody’s ever heard of. So he may not find every word he reaches for on live television, but he’s genuine, and people can sense that. It’s a rare commodity in this world where everyone seems to be obsessed with “building their brand.”

04/29/2018 - 1:05pm When I was a kid

The rule was that we could stay in the water until our lips turned blue, then we had to get out. Now that I’m a grown man, I wade in and drink until the water feels warm.

04/28/2018 - 9:28pm Slow your roll

Here in the U.P., we make it a point to never fast-forward through our month of summer.

04/27/2018 - 5:07pm Both the University of Michigan

and the University of Mississippi would like to reiterate that Mineral King had no inside knowledge of the negotiations between the two schools and in fact merely happened to pick the correct outcome in what was basically a coin-flip scenario.

04/25/2018 - 9:05am Typical star chaser.

Give me a three-star like Bob McGrath any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

04/25/2018 - 8:09am Who ya got?

So who’s on your UMMGC Mount Rushmore? I’ve got Bob McGrath, Ara Berberian, Russell Christopher and Jeff Marx.

04/23/2018 - 6:04pm We don’t have PBS in the U.P.

But we have plenty of PBRs.

04/21/2018 - 9:47am After last season

I just hope they design the new end zones in a way that makes them accessible from the red zone.

04/18/2018 - 3:47pm Don’t make the kickoff

some sad, ceremonial charade that insults everyone’s intelligence. Just ax it and move on.

04/17/2018 - 6:34pm You forgot to ask

how this will affect recruiting. /s

04/15/2018 - 12:44pm Amazing story.

The fact he can make the transition from Dr. Blitz to Donny Baseball so seamlessly speaks well of his leadership ability, which is clearly off the charts.

04/13/2018 - 10:58am "Choked away"

is not the preferred nomenclature. "Missed opportunity," please.

04/10/2018 - 2:27pm The only time I've ever seen anyone get "song punched"

was during West Side Story.

04/08/2018 - 10:50pm The only pre Madonna I know is

Madonna Louise Ciccone of Bay City, Michigan.

04/07/2018 - 4:52pm Not to split hairs

But it was no contest.

04/07/2018 - 8:28am Sure, Jack Morris won a lot of games

But did anyone get a glimpse of his WAR WHIP? How did his LIPS compare to Greg Maddox? Did his FIP flop under pressure? Did we ever really know Jack Morris at all? Come on folks, put down the beer and pick up your abacus. MB/9 isn’t a street gang, PI/P isn’t one of Gladys Knight’s backup singers and IR-A% isn’t a measure of how often Sam Webb lets his sidekick talk. If you really want to enjoy baseball, you have to grind it out like you did back in your high school math class.

04/06/2018 - 10:21am I'm sure at least a couple of our fans

who attended the game in Dallas have a used shark costume for sale. "Only used once (not by McElwain). $50 OBO."

04/04/2018 - 2:26pm Jim Harbaugh

doesn't strike me as a man who takes a lot of risks. That said, there is no way he allowed the success of this project as a recruiting tool to hinge on the outcome of 12 football games. When I saw the trailer for this, it struck me just how geared the footage was to recruits. You're seeing a heavy dose of the academic support folks, the amazing facilities, the family atmosphere ... in short, everything Michigan has to offer student-athletes. I think anyone expecting to see friction between Drevno and Pep, or gain any meaningful insight into why the offense struggled will be disappointed. I expect it to be a brilliant recruiting tool, but it will likely be too fluffy for hardcore Michigan fans wanting to see how the sausage is made.

04/04/2018 - 1:02pm This may be sacrilege

but I’d rather see Brendan F. Quinn write that book.

04/04/2018 - 11:43am So what is he...

a heel or a face?

04/02/2018 - 11:25am The sub, the sub, the sub

Roast beef, Vermont white cheddar, bacon, olive oil, and a dash of Excellence.

03/31/2018 - 9:52pm Dear God.

The mods should just go ahead and merge this with the drinking thread.

03/29/2018 - 8:29pm Wait ... Reggie Miller went to UCLA.

So why was he doing the Florida State teamcast during the regional final?

03/27/2018 - 2:50pm Larry David said...

he based that off the real-life experience of quitting his job as a writer at SNL and storming out one Friday afternoon. Then he spent the whole weekend wondering why the hell he had just flushed his career down the toilet. So he walked back in there Monday like nothing had happened, and he kept right on working there for quite a while.

03/27/2018 - 2:30pm Brendan’s profile...

on Beilein a couple years back was a standout piece of journalism. His writing was wasted on the Tennessee fanbase, so I’m glad he found his way up north.

03/21/2018 - 11:08am Tomorrow they're stopping in East Lansing...

where Steve will don Michael Scott's "Date Mike" attire in an effort to blend in.

03/20/2018 - 10:42am Izzo is a fellow Yooper.

It pained me when he took the Michigan State job because I wanted to like the guy, given the proximity of his hometown to mine. However, as the years passed, and it became more apparent how he goes about his business, I 1. have grown ashamed that he's from where I'm from and 2. am thankful he never managed to land the Michigan job.
