They were fantastic! Had a debate with my son as to whether this defense is the best I’ve ever seen at Michigan. It might be overall but ‘97 May still be it. Nowhere ne’er the depth… but that team rally intimidated … I’ve never seen a team line up with everyone inside 10 yards on every play and get it done like that. ‘97 also had a guy who could take half the field. Johnson is super however. Beautiful night! Go Blue!

Just flat out amazing!

I really think he was the offensive MVP. On a normal team we would have rode him like a horse. He finally made the right cuts tonight and found the holes. His contribution was necessary, obvious, and awesome. Congratulations to the Don!!!

I watched a D3 game in…

I watched a D3 game in person Thursday night (Trine University at Kalamazoo College) before I got home to watch us play on the Peacock. I was much more impressed with the defense played by D3 versus anything I’ve seen from Michigan this year.

And the most wonderful thing about the D3 game was there were no TV timeouts and no going to replay to see if the ball may have caught a player’s fingernail before going out of bounds.

So far the team cannot play…

So far the team cannot play sustained defense. The offense is also frustrating because they struggle to maintain a lead and they take too many “wrong” shots. However they do score the basketball. If they could only rebound a bit better and sustain defense- meaning don’t get caught over helping and gain a lock down mentality. Not sure it’s going to happen at any point with this team as it was “thrown together” to fill the gaps.

I like the coaching staff but I have to believe they are getting close to the chopping block.

Play a clean second half…

Play a clean second half. Keep doing what we are doing. Milroe is the only scary guy out there to me. I hate the missed extra point. Run the ball to set up passing game please. JJ May have to run some more… but not if we can get the backs 4 or 5 at a time. They made some offensive adjustments on the last drive but we held to 3. GO BLUE! Make it happen!!!

Ok. So we didn’t make open…

Ok. So we didn’t make open shots. We played good enough D to stay in it. Sat our 2 guys with fouls. Dickinson should be fresh for 20 minutes. Played weird guys. Make shots and keep playing D … gotta get out on the 3 better, other than that we’ve defended adequately. The officials are clowns so we aren’t going to get anything. Just make shots!

So we have finally learned…

So we have finally learned how to play some defense and our shooting is a little better. I’d love to see more defense from Jett. It looks like Dug is getting better each game. Win at home and pick up a few good wins on the road and we will be ok. These are two teams that are not all that good. I’d love to see one of our road wins today.

One man’s take…

I have…

One man’s take…

I have concern that OSU will come out and try to establish the run and work the pass off that. This may be where film shows us most vulnerable. I believe we are going to need to show we can stop them between the tackles, even though the world knows how explosive they are with their receivers/QB. Our DE’s will need to contain the outside against the bounce- maybe stay home more often than usual. The QB gets the ball out quick and nullifies the outside rush. Middle push and rush has not really been our M-O but could be key. Obviously we will rely on our secondary to keep everything in front and make them be more methodical and LB’s will need good drops on TE’s. This is mostly elementary, I know, but their QB is good and he doesn’t take long to throw the ball so he’s many times working off his pre-snap read. Many different coverage schemes to stay unpredictable will also be helpful.

I don’t know about the rest…

I don’t know about the rest of you guys but I believe we are in a much better place than we’ve been since Coach Carr’s retirement. I’m excited about this team’s progress and mostly pleased with our head coach and his staff. I’m certainly disappointed with the loss to MooU, and there were things I would have done differently during the heat of that game but most of our issues were with execution versus coaching. I would have called timeouts on defense. That would’ve probably been helpful. Even one officiating break would have probably gone far to winning that game. I beg that nobody is better fit to be our head coach. Let’s support him and I’m sure we will continue to win at a high number and eventually break through to be dominant.

I agree here for the most…

I agree here for the most part. I’m not sure how we could ever have a system in football that is anything like tennis. The tennis “eye thing” is good because it’s fast. If we can remember how replay started in the B1G … it was limited and fast. Currently, it’s used too much and takes too long.

I’ve never been a fan of…

I’ve never been a fan of replay at all in any sport. If we have to do it, do it like the NFL does it, only modified. Give the head coach a red flag and let him make a decision as to whether he wants to take the chance to lose a timeout. Limit it to one time per half. I understand that some games would still have missed calls but that’s part of any game. I used to always coach kids to play better than the officials officiate. Currently we are slowing the games down, taking away momentum, and accommodating television commercial space. Most importantly let’s evaluate officials better and make them more accurate and accountable.

Granted, I watch more B1G games than others, but I see more bad officiating from our league than others. We need to get them better at what they do.

Ok. So I finally got in.

Ok. So I finally got in.

This game was simple to analyze. We needed to call timeouts on Defense. They exploited our inability to get subs into the game. There were probably 3 or 4 crucial times to call a TO. We didn’t. You cannot save your timeouts for O. They give you time after a first down!

we were jobbed a bit by replay in the first half but we were still in control.

we have a coaching staff that seems to be working with the old NCAA rules or NFL rules. It’s all different now… you have to be able to adjust to what the substitution rules are. MAY obviously saw that as a problem for us and exploited it. That being said, up 16 in the third quarter… you have to win.

im interested to hear why McNamara was in the tent while McCarthy fumbled. Get him out or call a timeout! Damn!

RIP Bill Freehan. My dad’s…

RIP Bill Freehan. My dad’s favorite Tigers player.I too, attended Michigan Baseball Camp a couple times in the early 80’s. The first time I went, my dad dropped me off for the live-in camp but when he heard Freehan was going to be our first instructor, he stayed to view his seminar. Coach Freehan did not disappoint. He put on a clinic, covering every aspect of the catching position, fully geared, in hot and humid weather and the instruction was fantastic. I was a shortstop at the time but became a catcher a couple years later, incorporating everything Freehan taught. I also took the example he made as an instructor and based my coaching on it in my later years as a coach - hands-on, demonstrative coaching. I owe much of my success as a catcher and a coach to Bill Freehan and his probably one hour of instruction at U of M baseball camp. And my dad was also highly impressed and we brought back that memory over and over through the years. My personal thoughts and prayers go out to the Freehan family.

I went to the ‘04 Rose Bowl with a good buddy. We did it on the cheap- flew in New Year’s Eve, stayed the night in a relative’s apartment as she was away for the holidays. Partied at the bar bringing in the New Year in both Michigan (via phone) and California. Woke up in the morning and walked 5 miles to the Rose Bowl catching the parade along the way. Once we were at the stadium we were quite early so we crashed some tailgates. Low and behold at the back of one of the tents was none other than Tommy LaSorda, holding court and partaking of some brown pops. Took some pictures. Might be the highlight of the whole trip! RIP Tommy.

I’ve got an APA home brew out of my kegerator. It’s fantastic! The kegerator is dual taps and the other side is what I’m calling “Wuhan Pilsner”. Whether that’s politically correct, or not. It also turned out great. An IPA is fermenting... ready to take the place of whichever beer goes first. Have a great weekend MGOBLOG!

I know Christian well. Good speed, runs good routes, quickness is his forte along with excellent hands. He’s a very humble young man. His looks were D2 and D3 because he goes to a smaller school and he spent 2019 at QB. Michigan kinda blew him away with the late call to be a PWO. I think he’ll be that guy who can help early on special teams and surprise later in his career as a WR. Congrats Christian!

In my lifetime of watching Michigan high school basketball...

Best Player - Magic

Best shooter - Mark Brown

Best scorer - Joubert

Best low post player - JP Osterbaan

The best player I ever saw from the state however, is a little known guy I believe from Lansing (not sure which school) named Ronnie Thompkins. I don’t think anyone knew about him in high school but he lit up junior college in the mid 80’s. I went to Kellogg CC when he was there for a year. I think he also played at Mott and I believe he went on to a NAIA school. He was around 6’7”. He could shoot, he could score, he could really rebound and he played excellent defense. I had him in a couple of classes which he never attended. I looked him up a couple years ago when I was telling my son about him and he played many years around the world. Drugs seemed to be his downfall and I think he died in his 30’s. Does anybody else remember Ronnie Thompkins?

Agree with “unwavering”…

Agree with “unwavering”. Start with a game plan and adjust it from there to what works. Or in the case of Army’s offense- run the same play every down and run it well.

I played high school ball for a MHSAA hall of famer... a couple State titles and lots of wins. We would have a game plan of what works, then we’d run it until the opposition could stop it. Many times we would march down the field running a single play, 4,5,6,7 yards at a time and the next time we’d have the ball ... same play, other side of the formation. It’s actually funny to watch, if you’re a connoisseur of such things. I found Army fun to watch. It brought back my youth. I fully realize we have evolved beyond that but it’s nice to see it be successful still.

To really answer the question... I believe all coaches would typically like to see something near 50/50 by the end of the year.

Hold on to the football and…

Hold on to the football and cut out penalties. These two games are completely different in our favor if we do so.

I like two running backs, not 5. I like one QB not 2. I like one kicker, not 2.

We are 2-0. All wins are good.

GO BLUE!

My opinion has not changed…

My opinion has not changed. I am still very optimistic.

I thought MTSU came in with an excellent defensive game plan. I thought we effectively beat their scheme. Like any first game, we had some issues... the fumbles, incomplete catchable balls, and the dropped interception. Without these miscues we probably win by the spread amount and more.

That being said, a first week win is always good! There are some items to clean up, for sure. Young players got good game experience. Most position groups played well. The running backs blocked well and ran well too. DB’s were mostly excellent. QB’s were good to excellent. OL was good to excellent. Punter was good. Placekickers were good. Kickoffs were high and deep enough for fair catches. Some of the linebacker play was good, but that’s the place I’m hoping for the most improvement.

Their QB got the ball out quick when they passed, so it is difficult to evaluate our pass rush. I saw some DE mistakes but they were minimal.

Looking forward to watching the Army game Saturday (in person).

GO BLUE!
