05/22/2018 - 8:12pm Desmond vs ND

September 1991
4th & 1 at the ND 25
9 mins to play.

Lloyd kicks a FG in that situation.

Mo doesn't just go for the first down, he goes for it all.

That's the difference.

positively prescient. awesome flick.

it was probably the part without the lying.

04/27/2018 - 1:46pm Opposite examples

Brady had terrible measurables in speed and strength and succeeded in spite of draft metrics.

Rogers and McDowell are the flip side of the coin.

Not worthy of a down vote.

04/19/2018 - 2:05pm Dunning-Kruger effect

is what that is, and MSU is neck deep in it right now.

04/14/2018 - 6:28am January 1994

The temp for the month never hit double digits, and there was wind-chill to the minus-40s.

My friend lost a drinking bet to his girlfriend and had to run naked from our house at Packard and Hill across to Cottage In, bang on the windows, and back.

He was so cold by the time he got back that he needed a 20 minute hot shower to get his body temp back to normal.

For saying alumnus and not alumni. It gets awkward asking if someone is conjoined twins or has dissociative identity disorder.

03/29/2018 - 8:06pm Not my experience at all

The top notch BBAs were well on their way to MD in investment banking or exiting to premium private equity or hedge fund jobs by the time the MBAs figured out which way was up.

Analysts (BBA) had a much better chance than MBAs, and earlier. We had trouble keeping our best analysts - lost many/most to Cerberus, Apollo, Tennenbaum, TPG, Oaktree, etc. Those that stuck around got promoted to Associate and crushed the MBA competition because many of the MBAs were career switchers.

I saw as many MDs and practice heads that started as analysts straight from BBA (vs. from MBA) that never went back for their MBAs. At least that's how it was when I worked in restructuring/leveraged finance and sponsor coverage on Wall Street from 2002-2012.

I should note that I was a 2002 MBA, not a BBA.  Ross BBAs have, in my experience, done very well for themselves in banking.

Agreed.  Fundamentals were abysmal - guys couldn't set picks properly, consistently lost their check on defense when they watched the ball, never made any effort to box out.

Strategically, not much better.  Watching the ball move around the perimeter on offense with almost no sense of purpose, no motion...just a jacked up jumper before the shot clock expired.

That era was a crime against basketball.

Not saying it's the only factor, but it is a factor.  My youngest turns 5 tomorrow, so I mostly get to sleep these days (except we just got a puppy), but the first 2 years of each of my kids lives, my wife and I were zombies subsisting on 40 minute naps and caffeine.  It takes a toll.

02/05/2018 - 6:00am 20-5

Brady was 20-5 as a starter capped by a 34/46 for 350+ against a nasty Bama defense in an OT Orange Bowl win.

Brady earned his job weekly and the team elected him a captain.

Dude didn't start until his RS junior year but he was a fantastic, strong-willed starting QB who found a way to win a lot of games.

02/02/2018 - 11:10am Investment policy

Hedge funds typically tout returns of prior funds in marketing materials, but those materials are typically available only to qualified investors and not the general public, because the SEC's organizing focus is protecting the unsophisticated individual investor.

A decade-plus ago, when private equity and hedge funds were proliferating and everyone wanted in, fund managers could get away with refusing to allow such disclosures for their public clients. If public institution endowments wanted in, they had to play by the funds' rules. It was a seller's market.

Over the last 5+ years, the hedge fund industry in particular has seen contraction and capital has left the space (I haven't checked net flows recently, as I left banking a few years ago).

As a result, it's been more of a buyer's market. While certain top-echelon funds can still dictate terms for prospective investors (think bouncer at the velvet rope-type discretion), other funds cannot be so aggressive and need to court 800 pound gorilla investors like University endowments.

That means, to some extent, the power dynamic in the industry has changed. All of this is a very long way of saying that if public universities actually wanted to be transparent, they could collectively dictate terms to their prospective investment managers. They don't want that accountability, so they hide behind fund "requirements" that would disappear if they wanted them to. It's a nondisclosure requirement of convenience, not a real obligation.
