What I remember most about 2006 is that I wanted mostly for Carr to replace Herrman and DeBord as coordinators. I didn't want anything drastic like a coaching change. I am not sure if Carr's loyalty prevented him from doing that but those guys were horrible in my opinion. DeBord I believe had just come back from a winless season at CMU (I think). The other thing I remember about that year is that for the bowl game (and maybe this was a rumor) but that DeBord consulted an NFL coordinator and had a whole mess of new offensive wrinkles and plays. Florida wasn't ready for it b/c UM had never run that before. It might be interesting to see a UFR on that game and to compare it to what UM typically did that season.

Thought for sure this would have been mentioned.

05/29/2015 - 7:19am Henne spill

Thanks for this great post. A lot of great memories here. I had to watch the MSU game with Mallett and Hart. Something I never noticed before on this was Henne taking a great fall while celebrating at about the 10 min mark. Got to check it out.

12/18/2014 - 11:38am Harbaugh for 6

What is the possibility that the Miami owner is pushing JH to UM for 6 and then giving him the open door for a job when the program is turned around after the 6 years. Seems the best of both worlds. Miami can build from the draft a little longer and then hire him on after he grooms a qb at UM. Long shot I know but it would work wouldn't it?

12/15/2014 - 11:42am Miles Question

I am not a Miles fan and for me he is way down the list of coaches to hire but I am willing to be convinced. One of the negatives I see is recruiting. He has a whole amazing state to recruit in with only out of state competition. His classes and talent make his teams, his defense especially. Anyway if he comes to UM the talent pool drops and he is forced to grab a hodgpodge of athletes from all over the nation and is also forced to create some of those stars from 3 stars in Michigan or OH (and not from LA). Anyway, this is my main concern but would love to hear from pro-Miles people on this. To me his talent pool makes him great so when it goes away he is left to only his coaching ability or the ability to develop. Enlighten me.

12/04/2014 - 10:24pm Spike and Doyle

Had the privilege of being at the game on Tuesday. Spike and Doyle were awesome. Just love the energy Doyle gives us. I think he definitely is the one however, I still like him off the bench. He brings energy off the bench and I just think if Doyle starts and gets into foul trouble early there is more "panic" but if Donnal gets into foul trouble early we get excited and actually get a boost if Doyle comes in. It is just nice to have Spike and Doyle combo off the bench.

Spike though. Wow. I really didn't want JB to take him out when they stretched the lead to 10 or so. But it was almost like JB was saying, "hey I just want to make it an exciting game. If Spike stays in we will make this game a laugher. Why don't we let them back in and then I will put Spike back in so he can hit a few more big shots and win us the game."
Promptly after he came out Syr came back and tied it up. Just a classic though. It was great. Loved it. Keep up the good work JB and Go Blue!!!

06/14/2014 - 10:10am I just want to . . .

I just want to call him Taylor Levon

06/05/2014 - 12:59am Maryland's DL

You guys keep talking about the decent DL of the Terps. Their DL vs our OL means that I won't be talking too much trash and will be watching the game with much trepidation.

04/01/2014 - 7:17am I think . . .

actually that the NCAA rule is that the hand is part of the ball. Or so they said on the broadcast when looking at the replay of the jump balls Caris forced. It would then I guess apply to shooting as well even though I hate that rule since it affects follow through.

04/01/2014 - 3:03am Bielfeldt

I know he only played for 4 minutes but was anyone else impressed with how he played?. Hoping he can continue to develop his physicality and add some depth to our big men next year.

12/01/2013 - 11:12am Wished . . . .

that Drew Dileo was utilized more in the other games early on. I could definitely see the impact he had on this offense. I know he was hurt for the past few games but was under utlilized throughout the season.

05/25/2013 - 12:32am Yeah but . . .

Yeah but a tie is like kissing your mother-in-law - especially against that university down south.

04/26/2013 - 1:45am Your sister's barbies

I think your sister's barbies is what convinced our beloved kicker to choose UM over everybody else.

04/11/2013 - 7:51am I agree

I agree with what others said about THJ posting up and about going under the picks and forcing Siva to jack it up. They were horrendous from 3 and if we could have made them jack it up a bit more that could've been to our favor. THJ took that one shot after posting up his guy after an in bounds and buried it I would have gone right back to it.

The only other point I was confused about at the end of the game when we were looking for 3's Stauskus was on the bench. Maybe he was looking for ball handlers and yes Spike was hot but for me I thot he should be in there.

A lot has been said about how bad the refs are, not just in this game, but in all of college bball. I agree and was trying to think of some solutions. I don't think rule changes are necessarily the answer b/c the game is so fast and physical. What if they were to add a couple refs that would stay on the baseline on either side and just look for out of bounds and charges and other key calls. They would be overseeing certain calls which would free up the other refs to follow certain calls. Sort of like in football where the back judge counts and throws a flag for certain things but not others. This could work in the NBA too. Just can't hurt to utilize more eyes. I have tried reffing bball and it is one of the toughest sports b/c of angles, physicality, and minuteness of detail with balls being tipped and toes on lines. There is just a lot to look for. A charge is almost impossible without 2 people b/c you are almost always watching the ball so how can you really determine if they guy was set or not. A guy on the baseline could solve that or at least could drastically improve that. Love to hear what other solutions people would have. . .

04/10/2013 - 7:16am Heart-breaker?

After halftime I told my wife that this is the kind of game that can just break your heart, and don't get me wrong I was so disappointed to not get the win. However, I wasn't so heartbroken over that loss as others. We put in a great effort and it wasn't mistakes or a lot of unforced errors that lost the game. It was just a battle to the end and we didn't pull it out. I remembered the game in the tourney some years back with Gonzaga and I don't know who the winner was. But GZ lost after like 3 OTs and when they lost Mark Few at the end just applauded b/c it was a great game and both teams gave it their all. I sort of felt like that after this game. Hats off to Louisville - but also hats off to the Maize and Blue. They gave it their all and truly it was a fantastic year and a team that will be in my all-time favorites. Thanks guys.

03/01/2013 - 5:40am Zone

The thing about the zone is that you can learn to defend an area. You don't have to find yourself running around the entire court fighting through picks and recovering. Yes some of that happens but mostly you are covering an area. I think McGary could be a good zone defender b/c of his energy and most of his bad D come as a result of bad position which could be simplified in a zone look. The other reason UM went away from it a few years back is b/c we had no bigs. Well now we have a few and the zone could be a viable option once again. This probably wouldn't work 100% of the time but a team like PSU? It would work at least better than man D did. What have they got to lose? Lose by 15 to PSU?

Bball isn't football where it takes weeks and months and years to put in your system. It can be done quickly and if it doesn't work or improve things then you can chuck it. Maybe they just break it out for the tourney? Who knows, but I think it could work.

02/18/2013 - 2:09am Defense Defense Defense

Eessh the interior D was pretty bad. I was surprised they kept doubling the ball handler on picks. Didn't seem like it helped much and just left them out of position. I am also surprised they didn't just throw in a bit of zone to see if that would take away some of the interior drives and easy buckets. This week will be great to regroup and work on some new offensive sets since most teams are taking away some things with the pick and roll. Practice won't hurt at this point.

Good to see OSU got blown out in Wisconsin. It was encouraging to see since UM should have won that game. I was pretty frustrated with this game but if you think about their season overall. C'mon they lost the 4 games I thought they would and even had a chance to win won of them. 3 needs for them - play with more energy in the 1st half, improve interior D (maybe work on the zone?) and work on some new offensive sets to get the bigs involved more (more movement off the ball with more pics would be great.)

02/15/2013 - 1:25am Denard

Please please please . . . If Denard's NFL career doesn't work out, we have to hire him as a recruiting coordinator. His FL connection and his personality make him a perfect fit.
