06/14/2018 - 7:52pm I'm sorry you feel that way…

I'm sorry you feel that way but it is not as simple as you say.  My nephew was just drafted 4th in the OHL and I had multiple, extensive conversations with him and his parents about the decision.  The bottom line is that the decision they made was based on what I said.  Education at a US college with a potential stagnation of hockey growth and/or injury for two years vs. just shooting for NHL via the OHL now.  His parents are very well-educated and they don't need money so that wasn't part of it for them but a six figure payout to step on the ice is an attractive bonus as well.  They were only seriously considering Michigan and the Boston schools and he had an offer from all of them.  Likely, he could have gone to whatever US school he wanted - he was the top defenseman in the draft.

I felt he should go to a US college - specifically Michigan or Harvard if he wanted to be in Boston but I understand why they did what they did - even if he does have to live in Erie during the season.

I mention all of that because it is something that the US college hockey system is up against.  It's not just that the OHL (or whatever province they live in) is the clearer, quicker path to the NHL in their backyard.  It is also that Canadian kids don't have a lot of top competitive playing options in Canada if they choose to skip the OHL at 16 and wait to go to a US school at 18.  They can also get a free Canadian college education later which, on the surface, seems somewhat equal to what a US college can offer in the education department.  Granted, I doubt many kids take advantage of it, but the offer is there - or at least is was for my nephew.

06/14/2018 - 3:14pm My nephew was drafted just…

My nephew was drafted just before Perfetti and I asked my brother-in-law if Perfetti would stick to Michigan because he knew the Perfettis.  His answer was that he had always thought Perfetti was OHL-bound, so I wasn't holding out too much hope for him to actually make it to Michigan.  It's too bad because that kid is really, really good.  Smallish, shifty, fast and really skilled.  He was probably the most fun player to watch when I went to see my nephew play on the Oshawa Generals in an international tournament with teams from Europe.  Something about him reminded me just a little bit of Paul Kariya.  Obviously not quite as good, but he seemed like a similar player.

For the record, I really tried to get my nephew to accept his Michigan offer (which he did like) but he went the OHL route as well.  The problem is the competition level for the two years between now and when college starts.  The only real option for Canadians is to play in an amateur league one step down from the OHL and there are a lot of men on those teams that failed to make the OHL so great, young prospects may not get better over those two years and they run the risk of injury playing against full grown men.  Additionally, OHL teams offer scholarships at Canadian schools later if the NHL doesn't work out and that blunts some of the US college experience advantage.

That looks advantageous for us.  We have the weakest crossover game out of UM/OSU/PSU/MSU.

One of the things I forgot or failed to notice the first time is that they had more penalty yards lost than yards gained by their offense. Pretty impressive stuff.

07/28/2017 - 11:49am POV is lacking in perspective

I'm not trying to pick on you WD, but this general POV lacks perspective. It implies that everything is perfect and that there are no improvements to be made. That is simply not true.

You could have said the same thing about every other battle for rights in the past. You are a woman and you don't like that you can't vote prior to women's suffrage? Leave. You don't like a 12-16 hour work day with no overtime pay 100 years ago? Leave. You think slavery should be illegal? Leave. It's a good thing that people chose to stay and fight for their beliefs.

04/06/2017 - 2:03pm Potential different solve

I'd like to see the fouled team have the option to either burn the remaining time on the shot clock and give up possession or something like knock 10 seconds off the clock and retain possession/shoot free throws.

You should not be able to get a potential advantage in the game by breaking the rules of the game. As it is, even if a team makes all their free throws, they can still lose due to 3 pointers and a team that is losing should not be able to put the other team under pressure by fouling. To my knowledge, no other sport allows for this.

Completely agree. Great people and players come from everywhere. The degree by itself is not sufficient by any means.

Sent from MGoBlog HD for iPhone & iPad

03/03/2016 - 4:29pm Where people get a degree

Where people get a degree from is similar to how many stars a potential football recruit has. It is better to recruit 5 stars - they are more likely (not guaranteed) to be stronger performers. Same is true of graduates of elite academic schools - they are more likely to be stronger performers in a business.

In that context, it absolutely does matter where people go to school - your hit rate for good hiring tends to be better from a school like Michigan than from a lower ranked institution.

07/11/2015 - 12:27am Actually, marketing and

Actually, marketing and marketers can be highly analytical. For example, I am a marketer after a career change thanks to Ross, but I also have three engineering degrees. I usually don't make a major decision without a decent amount of qualitative and quantitative data to back me up. That said, this is most likely not estimated by a marketer anyway - probably a quant/analytical specialist - most companies like this one have people on staff for these kinds of things. Oh, and on a completely unrelated note, I'm married to a Canadian.

03/16/2015 - 1:45pm Maybe you are right. I still

Maybe you are right. I still maintain that breaking the rules of the game to actually improve your ability to win the game should be strongly discouraged or eliminated. In no other sport is this routinely allowed. For example, the nfl changed their rules to run time off the clock in situations where the fouling team would get an advantage. Maybe it is just calling more of these end game fouls for what they are - intentional fouls and awarding something more to the fouled team. Maybe end game fouls count as two fouls so people foul out a lot faster. Something should be done because for every great (and I would say undeserved) comeback, there are 10 long, crappy endings.

03/16/2015 - 12:56pm For me, it is the fouling at

For me, it is the fouling at the end of the game that is the problem. You shouldn't be able to benefit from fouling. I don't think you can in any other sport. A reasonable way to address this is to give the option to the fouled team of either taking free throws or running the remaining shot clock off the game clock.

Sent from MGoBlog HD for iPhone & iPad

02/13/2015 - 4:37pm I would prefer that the team

I would prefer that the team that is fouled is given the option to either shoot free throws OR run off the shot clock and give up possession. I think it is ridiculous that a team can potentially benefits from breaking the rules of the game (fouling). I can't think of another example in another sport where that is the case other that really unusual situations.

10/21/2014 - 9:46am I think that is frustrating

I think that is frustrating too, but can you really blame them?  If Devin gets seriously hurt, then we have almost no chance to win another game this year.

I'd rather see if they can keep it close and then unleash Devin's legs in a final drive for the win or something like that.  Only use his legs if it is a clear chance to win the game in the end.

09/17/2014 - 10:31pm I went to RPI '90-'94

Games were really fun there.  Different than Michigan, but still really good. I caught one year of Joe Juneau back then.  He was an impressive dude.  Got his degree in aeronautical engineering with a 4.0 GPA in just 3 years despite not speaking English when he arrived.  Then went on to a decent NHL career.

08/12/2014 - 7:21pm OL Performance

This isn't a criticism of your work and is possibly not even relevant to your writeup, but it seems to me that the best way to look at OL performance is not to look at averages across the 5 starters.  Instead, the performance/quality of the either the worst or perhaps the second worst player on the line (in case you can scheme around one poorly performing lineman) seems most relevant.  The old adage that a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link seems to apply.

This approach makes more sense to me - if more difficult to implement.  Many people thought we should have been better last year because we had two NFL ready tackles, but their great performances were often completely wasted because our lower performing lineman were collapsing much of the game.  That's why averages doesn't seem to work to me because if you average our OL ability from last year, you'd probably wind up with something close to an average college football line and we know that wasn't the case.

This is also why I am at least a little optimistic about the OL this year, because while our tackles will be worse, our interior should be better and now there should not be as much of a collapse as there was last year.  I guess we'll see how it goes.

11/26/2013 - 10:13am Remove cupcakes?

It might be worth considering removing cupcakes. My rationale there is that theoretically at least, we would/should be a much better team than their conference schedule opponents. That we do better than their average is no surprise and should be expected. I think it is fair to keep all Big Ten opponents and ND. Granted, taking this approach is a bit subjective, but the cupcakes are increasing our scores on the left of the charts.
