This is just a nitpick stemming from your initial assumptions:  If Purdue wins its final game vs Northwestern, won't it be guaranteed the #2 seed in the BTT?  So if you are assuming all the other higher seeds advance in the BTT, Michigan would be playing Purdue in the finals under scenarios 1 & 2, not MSU.

But an interesting thought piece nevertheless.

Maybe I missed something, but I'm not sure what to infer from:  "...as Ben McDaniels seems to be finding out, better not to count those chickens before they've hatched twitter eggs."?

Or is it we fans (and not necessarily Ben McDaniels) who have been counting unhatched chickens?

01/10/2019 - 2:58pm Agreed.  But didn't Ole Miss…

Agreed.  But didn't Ole Miss agree to support Patterson's waiver basically in exchange for the petition stripping out all of the truly damning allegations against it?  UGA would agree to support a bland waiver request in exchange for Field's lawyer not going public with inflammatory stuff that (whether true or not) would kill its ability to recruit (as well as open the door to future transfers).

01/10/2019 - 2:38pm Recalling Patterson's case,…

Recalling Patterson's case, didn't Ole Miss at first contest his lawyer's first filing, after which they came to an agreement to support a revised waiver request that was more softly worded (as to Ole Miss's culpability); and then the NCAA granted the waiver because the losing university supported it?  That's how I would envision this could play out in Fields' case too -- his lawyer (same guy as Patterson used) flashes a bit of UGA's dirty laundry as a way to force UGA to the negotiating table. UGA then agrees to support the waiver to protect its institutional reputation.

Only possible impediment I can see is if the NCAA decides it needs to stop that precedent from becoming established -- that the way around the transfer rule is just to hire a strong-armed lawyer.

I'm not endorsing his dad, nor implying that his antics are in any way a benefit to a basketball program; but at least what he does is out in the open.

Maybe not technically a spoonerism, but I keep mentally changing Kipper Nichols to "Kick 'er Nipples."

Biggest thing to me is to get the big money out of the game.  Drop the coaches' salaries down to the level of regular university faculty.  Running on leaner budgets will give the universities/conferences the financial leeway to do without the fat TV contracts that drive all the screwy scheduling and advertising.  Relieving that income disparity will also make it feasible to share revenue with student athletes (who will now become more reasonably true "student athletes" if they are being taught/coached by actual faculty) without freaking out the amateurism purists.  As a former (small, liberal arts) college athlete, I firmly believe that sports are indeed educational; let's recognize and embrace that educational benefit and the vocational training being done in the same way that business, engineering, etc. schools do.

Yep.  That's the one I was referring to above.  I don't know that it was blatant, though.  It seemed pretty subtle to me -- I had to watch the clip several times to figure out how Gary suddenly changed direction like that.  Pretty slick move by the RG.

On the final play of the 1st half (the double viper blitz that Brian linked to several times), it looks like Gary got robbed of at least 1/2 sack if the RG (66) hadn't yanked him back by the jersey after he'd beaten the RT.

Heartfelt thanks to Ace for all the good words, artfully arranged.  I very much enjoyed his writing here, and will miss it.  But it sounds like he has a greater, more important calling.  Here's to his attacking it with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind.

In all honesty, I do think the condition of Coach B's ticker has more to do with the likelihood of success for the team than the pre-season performance of any of the freshmen.

It says poor Flash now has a new name, but doesn't say what it is.  "Flinch" maybe?

06/09/2017 - 3:41pm H-O-R-S-E could never work

It'd have to be played in all 6 of the UN languages.  Chinese team would win with a single made basket.

07/14/2016 - 1:46pm Interesting (thanks).  But

Interesting (thanks).  But how is an "inbounds-pass fest" worse than a "free-throw fest"?  Both are boring stoppages of play (although I think inbounding would generally consume less time than shooting free-throws).

The key thing, in my mind, is to make a violation of the rules unequivocally disadvantageous to the offending team (or as close to it as possible).  Basketball is nearly unique among sports in that intentionally overt rule-breaking can work to the offender's advantage in a large number of cases.

In reading this article, I wonder if the real cause of the game still devolving into an "inbounds-pass fest" was that even with the rule change fouling was still too cheap for the trailing team.  They clearly calculated that they were better off (or no worse off) trying to steal an inbounds-pass than by playing straight up defense.

For any cord-cutters out there.  The TruTV website neglects to mention this.

11/14/2013 - 1:25pm All the best to the young man

I hope his new team loses all their games (but it probably won't, so I don't have to feel bad for wishing that).

11/24/2012 - 10:41am Big Ten Network will carry the replay

http://www.btn2go.com/btn2go/ will have a replay up and accessible after midnight EST.  You have to have a subscription to a cable/satellite service that carries BTN (or know a friend who will let you log in to their subscriber account).  It is on-demand streaming (ie not downloadable, I think), but stripped of commercials and halftime show fluff.

That's how I'm watching the game myself, living in Austria where my only other option would be First Row, which is live streaming and therefore not pause-able, so if I lose bandwidth I miss action while the feed re-buffers.

09/21/2012 - 2:29pm Any delayed streams?

I' just moved to Austria, and with two little kids who run me from 7 o'clock every morning, I'm not sure I can rouse myself at 1:30 a.m. to watch live via VPN and NBCSports.com. I know BTN2Go offers on-demand streaming of games the following day, but only from theirs, ESPN, and ABC broadcasts. Does NBC offer anything similar. I don't see it on their website.
