11/12/2018 - 10:05am Brings to mind a story about…

Brings to mind a story about Barry Switzer.  In 1980, North Carolina had a pretty good team - they were 7-0 and had risen to No. 6 in the polls.  They featured LT on defense and "Famous" Amos Lawrence at running back.  They were coached by Dick Crum.  OU was only 5-2 and was ranked No. 16, but would go on to win the Big 8.  They played a late-season nonconference game in Norman.  Before the game while the coaches were chatting, Barry repeatedly referred to Dick as Denny, who was the basketball coach at Louisville who had just won the NC earlier that year.

After the game, which OU won in a surprising romp, 41-7, Switzer again called Crum "Denny."  Crum finally corrected him:  "Coach, my name is Dick!  Denny is a basketball coach in Kentucky!"

Turned out to be the only game UNC lost that year.

02/23/2018 - 12:11pm the non-compete was written

so that it only applied if Enos left or was fired for cause (i.e. misconduct or NCAA violations).

02/23/2018 - 12:10pm this is correct

Enos was not subject to a non-compete.

11/27/2017 - 1:57pm The series isn't restarting

its just a 2-game deal.

So come the end of 2019 each team will have had one more home game than it's had now.

The home dates fell the way they did because otherwise UM would have had only 6 home games in 2019 and Harbaugh said he didn't care if ND got the first home game in 2018.

05/19/2017 - 11:50am Big 10 is #2

because its new TV deals don't kick in until the fall.

04/21/2017 - 2:20pm Jay Feely says yes

04/04/2017 - 11:31am they've been sending NHL players to the Olympics since 1998

where's the big boom in NHL viewership that you say will result?

03/08/2017 - 1:28pm If you guys think that

Delany just did this on his own, you're sadly misinformed.

02/27/2017 - 1:57pm One of the things that gets lost with Red

Is how long it took him to build up the program from the one he took over.  I think it was either his 6th or 7th season before they made the NCAA tournament, though a little better luck in the CCHA tourney in either 1989 or 1990 might (should in 1990) have gotten them there.  In a lot of ways he's been a victim of his own success.  Makes you wonder how much time his replacement will get to have things up and running.

02/24/2017 - 10:26am I ran across Rodman

after he was done playing out in Newport Beach where he lived.

The stuff he did on the court was exactly him.  It wasn't an act.

02/21/2017 - 11:51am The hoops attendance problems

seem to undermine that argument.  College hoops is pretty reliably a 2-hour affair unless the game goes to overtime.

Seems to me that if they win more games, more people will come.

02/02/2017 - 4:29pm wipe the 28 from your head

it never was a rule.

12/22/2016 - 1:56pm I think you missed the point.

I think you missed the point.  Nobody is telling you that you can't be a Bruce and contact recruits or their families.  They are telling you that it is a total dick move to do it.  If you're not smart enough to understand the difference that's not our problem.

12/22/2016 - 11:53am On ND

There are two constraints:

1.  Habaugh said to make it happen ASAP.

2.  They need 3 home nonconference games in 2019.

Put those things together and it was never going to be anything but playing at ND in 2018 and in Ann Arbor in 2019.

11/23/2016 - 4:22pm There's an official app

called mgoblue2go.

You can also point your phone's web browser to mgoblue.com and click on the live audio link.

11/15/2016 - 10:40am Here's the NCAA Rule

Rule 9-1-11

ARTICLE 11.

a. No defensive player, in an attempt to gain an advantage, may step, jump or stand on an opponent.

b. No defensive player who runs forward from beyond the neutral zone and leaps from beyond the neutral zone in an obvious attempt to block a field goal or try may land on any player(s).

  1. It is not a foul if the player was aligned in a stationary position within one yard of the line of scrimmage when the ball was snapped.
  2. It is not a foul if the player leaps from in or behind the neutral zone.
  3. It is not a foul if an offensive player initiates contact against the player who leaps.

c. No defensive player who is inside the tackle box may try to block a punt by leaving his feet in an attempt to leap directly over an opponent.

  1. It is not a foul if the player tries to block the punt by jumping straight up without attempting to leap over the opponent.
  2. It is not a foul if a player attempts to leap through or over the gap between players.

d. No defensive player, in an attempt to block, bat or catch a kick, may:

  1. Step, jump or stand on a teammate.
  2. Place a hand(s) on a teammate to get leverage for additional height.
  3. Be picked up by a teammate, or be elevated, propelled or pushed.

PENALTY [a-d]—15 yards, previous spot and automatic first down. [S38]

11/03/2016 - 2:06pm College PI in the endzone

Results in the ball being placed at the 2 if the original spot was at the 17 or closer to the end zone or a 15 yard penalty (no reduction for half the distance) if the original spot was outside the 17.

In this case, the play started at the 20 so the ball was placed at the 5.

10/17/2016 - 9:58am For those who are members at the Scout site

this gut feeling has been around for a while...

10/13/2016 - 2:50pm It's a Big 10 rule

Harbaugh took the whole roster to Utah last year.

10/12/2016 - 12:32pm I've lived in Central Ohio for 21 years

tips for staying safe:

1.  safety in numbers.

2.  for whatever reason, if your stuff doesn't say Michigan on it they don't seem to pick up on the fact that you're a Michigan fan if you're wearing blue (like any true OSU fan would be caught dead wearing blue to the game on that day of all days).

3.  don't mouth off and be prepared to ignore pretty much any verbal insult.

4.  safety in numbers.

10/11/2016 - 2:01pm Some weeks ago

he said that it will not.

09/20/2016 - 3:33pm there is no notification rule in college football

the two end men on the LOS are eligible if wearing the right number and ineligible if wearing 50-79.

09/20/2016 - 3:32pm you are correct

even the center can be an eligible receiver in college football so long as he is wearing the right number, assuming that everyone else on the line is to one side or the other.

09/16/2016 - 10:04am There's an AATA shuttle from at least one of the mall hotels

I believe it picks up at the Kensington Hotel and drops off/picks up in front of Crisler.

09/14/2016 - 1:21pm 3 days out

is when you're just starting to move beyond an informed guess.  Even 24 hours out can be iffy.

09/13/2016 - 10:05am Just FYI for rental cars

I've never seen discounts that beat what you can get from Costco Travel, assuming you're already a Costco member.

Discounts are great and for family trips you get an additional driver included for no extra charge.

09/08/2016 - 11:24am Stubhub fees are a percentage of the sale price

I tried a pair of PSU tickets listed at $99 each.  The fees take the $198 total price to $242.60, or 44.60 in fees.  That's 22.5 percent of the listed price in fees.

If you paid $16 in fees that means you probably just bought a couple cheap tickets to UCF.

09/08/2016 - 11:13am If you can get

something like two seats in one row immediately ahead of or behind two seats in the next, it can actually make it easier for four people to talk to each other.

Wouldn't really think of it for just two people though.

You can pay Stubhub's fees for the convenience and so you have some recourse/assistance in the event there's a problem, or you buy direct from the university, or you can go to another website or the streets of Ann Arbor and take your chances.  It's a free country.

08/25/2016 - 2:22pm It wasn't quite as restrictive

as one game a week and each team could only appear once a season.  I know that they allowed for multiple games per weekend because I can recall going to OU-Nebraska in Norman with ABC cameras all over the place and then coming home to watch USC-UCLA on ABC at night.  Also I think the rule was 3 appearances per team per season, plus a bowl game.

08/07/2016 - 3:56pm That rule has changed

since Boren transferred.

07/19/2016 - 11:37am He could sue Goodell for defamation

But will probably conclude that life is too short.

07/11/2016 - 12:25pm Just a small point

The regular season was 12 games in 2002 and 2003.  It was a 2 year experiment at the time, then they went back to 11 games for 2004 and 2005, and then the 12 game regular season was made permanent in 2006.

06/09/2016 - 4:06pm His tweet from earlier today

implies he's going to SMU.

https://twitter.com/JakeRaulerson55/status/740977840800305152

05/19/2016 - 10:49am At least you're honest

about being a fair-weather fan.

04/19/2016 - 11:39am they said their source

for Swenson was the same as the source on the Peters rumor, which is why they gave it credence.

Just passing on what they said.

04/06/2016 - 4:19pm Not only did he retire of his own accord

he tried to retire the year before and the athletic director asked him to stay on another year.

04/01/2016 - 1:46pm Last time they had 8 home games

the price was $450.

Spin it however you want.

03/15/2016 - 12:46pm I hope you realize

that someone else doubtless did the same in your room before you got there and no, the cleaning crew did not fully clean it up.

03/14/2016 - 4:12pm If you have Directv

and aren't under contract with them, and aren't calling every 6 months to get some kind of concession from them, you're leaving money on the table.

03/07/2016 - 12:25pm That's not what Bylaw 15.5.9.1 says

It says that if you're on an athletic scholarship and you play football you count for football.  Period, end of discussion.

Football trumps everything.  Hoops trumps everything but football.

Kind of a right bower/left bower deal.

Bylaw 15.5.9.7 says that you only count in one sport no matter how many you play.

01/14/2016 - 12:23pm I've posted a link elsewhere

that has quotes from Big 10 officials in it.

Minnesota had a class of 30 in 2010 or so.

01/14/2016 - 11:41am If a player was not a recruited student-athlete

(meaning no official visit and no in-home visit from a coach), and the scholarship is either non-institutional (i.e. the Kalamazoo Promise) or if institutional, the Director of Financial Aid certifies that it is not related to athletics ability, a player can get a non-athletic scholarship, play a sport, and not count against the scholarship limitations.

01/14/2016 - 11:39am The Big 10's "plus 3" rule

has to do with the 85 limit, not the 25 limit.

See the quotes from Big 10 officials in this article.

01/11/2016 - 11:01am The idea is to get wifi in the stadium

That is what NFL stadiums do and it takes a lot of the load (primarily people trying to send pictures they've taken either to friends or to Twitter/Facebook).

The problem is that there are not a lot of good places in the bowl to put the antennae.  I think they tried it out on a limited basis for a few sections on the east side of the stadium in 2013 but then things got really distracted going into 2014.

Brandon blamed the decline in student attendance on this issue but the fact that it was an excuse was shown by the fact that he didn't exactly make it a priority to deal with.

12/02/2015 - 12:36pm It's basically

an accounting convention.  A similar charge is imposed on every department - essentially the allocation of overhead expenses that can't otherwise be allocated, so it is recorded as a charge against each department's budget.

11/10/2015 - 2:38pm I think he's specifically talking about

credential sharing for live sports events.

11/10/2015 - 2:34pm watchESPN blacks out NFL on phones

because the NFL Mobile app makes all games shown on Thursdays, Sunday nights, and Mondays available on it.  But your service has to be through Verizon.

Same thing happens Sunday nights on the NBC Live Extra app.  Blacked out on my phone but not on my ipad.

11/08/2015 - 10:45am Missed the stadium?

They flew right overhead.

11/05/2015 - 11:50am Rarely remembered, but the pass to AC in 1979

that won the Indiana game came on play action out of a two-back set.

Even Bo laughed at himself for that one.

Apparently that was the only play in the playbook that sent 3 receivers on medium/deep routes.
