I agree about Stannis not being the leader Davos wants him to be. I'm pretty sure he isn't who Mel thinks he is either. If he ends up consenting to Shireens burning in the books then it must be for something else, like the stone dragons or something. Him doing it to win the Battle of Winterfell would (logistically) make no sense.
1. I'm more curious if Davos knew what was going to happen. That's why he had such an emotional goodbye with Shireen. If he somehow finds out or knew about Stannis doing that, maybe Jon asks him to go search for Bran and Rickon and we end the season with Davos on his book storyline.
2. I think the only way the North accepts Stannis is if he names Sansa or Rikon warden of the North and continues on his war to Kings Landing. It's a possibility.

Although I will admit, burning Shireen seemed out of character for even Show!Stannis, but viewers have to remember this is the same guy that killed his brother and was going to burn an innocent teenager (Gendry).
It just sucks because I was starting to like Stannis this season :(
