I believe David Jones was referencing a scene in "When Harry Met Sally" when calling the new Championship trophy a wagon-wheel coffee table.
I got a link below to the scene but the idea of it is that your buddy (Whoever made that Trophy) asks you (fans, media, etc) if you like it and knowing that it is terrible but not wanting to hurt your buddy's feelings (who obviously thinks it's great) you say its good. But you know its a damn Wagon-Wheel Coffee Table!
