04/02/2018 - 5:38pm Manna from Heaven

Great post, Seth!  Love these kinds of articles in the leadup.  See you in the promised land!

03/29/2018 - 3:02pm Jong-un? Now his team, I could get behind.

I like the way he thinks.  Wait, no politics!  Damn!

03/29/2018 - 2:37pm I would root for a team

including Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini, Pol Pot, and Kim Jung Il, with the Devil off the bench and rooted on by the screaming woman from the Big Ten tournament, against any member of the conference.  Any sport, any time.  Fuck the conference.  Hard.

03/28/2018 - 12:08pm What? No announcement at the foot of Bronze Sparty

with a photo-op with a self-serving, beaming Izzo in the background?  They must be queueing up the lavish press-conference for the JJJ "I'm staying" announcement, or the Nick Ward "I'm playing overseas" announcement.

03/27/2018 - 9:19pm Approve XM

I approve, XM.  Team is unbelievable.  Love that all players came with humble recruiting profiles or have transferred in, have improved since arival and that all the doubters have been proven wrong. Season is pure gold.  Sparty Schadenfreude doesn't hurt either.

03/16/2018 - 3:19pm Always good to find a chance for an AD reference

It's always good to have an opportunity for an Arrested Development reference.  Great write-up!

03/16/2018 - 2:52pm While [Matthews'] 90 ORTG won't...

You forgot to say "away" again...

[hangs up]

Charles blew everyone away!

03/02/2018 - 4:52pm Bring on Sparty

Love a chance to beat Sparty 2 times in the same year.  Would love to see Wagner with some Stauskus swag tomorrow, blowing kisses to the MSU fans.  Should be awesome!

02/28/2018 - 4:49pm Question Re. Last Column

If the first 3 (MSU, OSU and Purdue) each had, as of the taking of this snapshot, 100% chance of finishing in the Top 4, and Nebraska had a 93.3% chance of finishing in the Top 4, how in the hell did Michigan have a 23.0% chance of finishing there?  The first 3 take 3/4 of the Top 4 away, meaning the remaining teams are playing for only 1 remaining Top 4 position.  Undere thos circumstances, shouldn't remaining possibilities add up to 100% (multiple teams fighting for 1 remaining spot, rather that multiple teams fighting for multiple remaining spots)?  Statistics am hard.

02/26/2018 - 10:27am Cool Story Indeed

Cool story, and it may be the first time that Iowa actually missed a shot in memory of Chris Street.  If I recall correctly, in 1993, Michigan rolled into Iowa City shortly after the accident and a somewhat average Iowa team handed the sophomore Fab Five team one of its 3 losses in the Big Ten that year (other 2 being to Big Ten winning Indiana team).  I feel like they could not miss that day.  I remember at the time chalking this up to the Hank Gathers principal (do not run into a team honoring a fallen teammate), and being a big baby about it, but with age I understand now that this is actually a pretty cool thing, both in rising to the occassion to honor the teammate in the very next game(s), and in continuing to honor his memory 25 years later.

11/07/2017 - 1:08pm Falling out of the tree

I'm pretty sure the kid falling out of the tree happened after that year's OSU game.  I was a senior in 1997-98, and spoke with my mom shortly after the OSU game.  She had called to make sure I was safe, as she was certain that it could only have been I that had fallen out of the tree.  No such luck, mom.

Not part of the picture, but deffinitely part of the group that was invited into the President's house.  I remember being part of a group that carried a police barrier like the crew team carries its oars up to the crowd, the crowd parting, and letting us up to the front door.  We walked up to the front door and lightly tapped on the door as if the barrier were a battering ram.  About that time, Bollinger opened the door, said something about how this house was the University President's house, but it was also your (meaning the student body's) house, then swung open the door and said "come on in!"

If everyone who claims they had a beer from his refrigerator that evening actually had a beer, then Bollinger had a serious drinking problem!  No way he had 1,000s of beers in that place unless the grand piano had a refrigeration chamber!  Awesome memories!

05/05/2017 - 4:51pm Who's the Yahoo who Lost?

4 candidates, and 3 spots.  I take it Graham Spanier, Jr. was the 4th candidate?

03/29/2017 - 11:45pm The Nurse does not think you are funny

As my brother told me, you will want to think you are the funniest guy in the room, but the nurse does not really think you are funny.  Knock it off.

Seriously, cogratulations, sir!  It's a wild ride, but you will enjoy, no doubt about it.

03/17/2017 - 3:46pm From the Bracket Logo

Unbelievable.  One of the best post-season runs by an individual player since, dare I say it, Glenn Rice?

03/15/2017 - 10:29am Scolders be Scolding

One can be a "true fan" and stick with his team, but still be critical of the coach (recruiting failures, roster issues, etc.) and question whether the team, as then playing, had the abiltiy to turn things around.  When the team was 2/3 of the way through the season, and its deffensive efficiency numbers were in the mid 100s, it was quite fair and logical to think that it was more liklely than not that such trend would continue, and that the NIT was calling.  JB does not have a history of efficient deffensive teams, and there was little evidence, at the time, to believe the new assistant's methodologies and teachings had sunk in.  Can we always rely on the model of a senior point guard with a theretofore middling career (yes, injury riddled, but still) flipping a switch, not at the beginning of his senior year, but rather 2/3 of the way through?  I am thrilled for DWJ, but there was little evidence to suggest that he was poised for a border-line All America finishing kick to his career.  Be proud of your "I never left" mentality, and the pulled muscles you get from patting yourself on the back, but the anti-Beilien crowd was hardly jumping at shadows.

03/13/2017 - 3:16pm Anyone Else Notice

Anyone else notice that Hollis is an exact voice twin of the creapy prosecuting attorney from "Making a Murderer."  I bet he talks about how he has a $300,000 house to the young NCAA interns.

07/15/2016 - 2:28pm You went to class the next day?

I purposely took no Sunday classes.  Only mini-courses and Tuesday-Thursday lectures for me!

07/15/2016 - 11:43am President's House

This was my senior year at UofM.  I rushed out to South U. after the game and joined the crowd at the President's House.  He said something to the effect of "I'm the new President here, and this is my house, but it's also your house!"  Then he stepped aside and said "come on in!"  If you were to believe everybody who later said they stole a beer from Bollinger's fridge and drank in his living room, he would have had to have had about 100 cases on hand.  Great memory of an awesome season.

02/09/2016 - 3:15pm Markie D

I understand that in response to being advised that his team is ranked #14 in ESPN's "Too Early" rankings, Markie D tweeted "Others are ranked on promise, while we are egregiously under-ranked based on our results."  He has since deleted the tweet.

11/04/2015 - 2:52pm One thing missing in analysis

If there are 3 teams tied atop a B1G division, the section of the tiebreaker rule at issue says to look at the CFP rankings and take the highest ranked team; BUT, if the two highest rated teams of the 3 are within 1 ranking of each other, then you drop the 3rd in line, and apply the balance of the rules as if 1 of the 3 teams had been equivalently eliminated under any of the other rules.  In other words, if UM wins out, OSU beats MSU and losed to UM, we have a 3-way tie at 7-1 in the division among UM, OSU and MSU, conceptually, OSU could be the highest ranked of the 3, followed by UM and MSU.  In this scenario, if OSU is ranked only 1 higher than UM, the tiebreaker rules would drop MSU, and then move on to the portion of the rules that determines the division champion as between 2 tied teams, that is head-to-head, which, in the scenario described, UM would win.  Bottom line, UM needs to win out, be ranked 1st or 2nd of the 3 tied teams, and if 2nd, it needs to be 2nd to OSU and within 1 ranking of OSU.

10/30/2015 - 4:21pm Rent "Animal House"

Access a copy of "Animal House", watch it, and then return here to acknowledge your understanding.  There are a great number of obvious-sounding mistakes on this site that are not actually mistakes, but rather can be chalked up to references to old movies.  I still reference those old movies, so no judgment there.  I suppose maybe you are being " /s", and this post is for naught.  But it may still cause you to re-watch "Animal House", so good may still come of it all the same.

10/21/2015 - 2:44pm In the Movie

In the Back to the Future Movie, Marty changes the means by which his parents meet and fall in love, and, upon his return to the 1985 present, his parents still own the same house (which is now decorated in a much fancier manner) and his tool siblings are now somehow cool (including that horse, Wendy Jo Sperber who we are supposed to believe now has multiple gentlemen suitors).  The point there is that the Robert Zumekis paradox allows a time traveler to keep all other history in tact, but make everything else better.  Why has nobody opted to slightly alter the past in hopes of making any of our "tool siblings" a little cooler?  Myself, I go back to approximately 1987 and deliver information on the winning plays of each Sparty loss during the Bo and Carr era (Desmond trip, Clockgate, etc.) to the coaching staff.  I then return to the present to see that Sparty has not won a game against us in 20+ years, Harbaugh was hired immediately upon Carr's retirement, and my ugly horse of a sister now has multiple dates.  Perfect.

10/18/2015 - 10:46am I usually like to wait

I usually like to wait a few days before attaching a comedic/amusing moniker to a horrible event (hoping to find an ounce of joviality in the infinite darkness).

That said, your two named candidates are both acceptable.

10/15/2015 - 6:52pm Yeah, Like "Little Giants"

He called that play at an extremely risky down and distance, 4th and 13, if I recall, rather than go for a tying fieldgoal from 46 in overtime.   And there should have been a delay of game called to boot.  Just the start of Sparty's way too lucky run under Dantonio.  I may very well lose my mind if they pull something like that off this weekend.

10/14/2015 - 7:32pm Living Out of State

Living out of state, I certainly have not missed Sparty fans' smug faces on the Mondays following our too-numerous to recount defeats at Sparty's hands over the last few years.  On the other hand, I may have to take the day off and head back home to Southeast Michigan this coming Monday, to revel is their sweet, sweet tears.

09/30/2015 - 5:22pm No worries

I appreciate my first negs, and I would add extra +1's for my response to you if possible for having provided said negs with the typical "don't click on the thread if you don't like it" response.  I was under the (apparently misguided) impression that the board didn't mind some good-natured ribbing on some of its more pronounced repetitive practices (i.e., predictions).

09/30/2015 - 3:33pm Looks like it's time

Looks like its time for someone to start an "inches of precipitation prediction" thread.  Or, at least start the first one of seven.

09/17/2015 - 3:24pm Time to Start a Projected Pre-Season Prediction Thread

Never too early to start a "Projected Pre-Season Prediction Thread".  Make sure to get your predictions of pre-season projections in no later than the night before the much-anticipated day on which ESPN releases its pre-season projections.

09/04/2015 - 5:16pm Disagree on Gus Johnson

Gus Johnson seems to think that simply raising his voice is adequate play by play announcing.  For instance, during Peppers' good return, Johnson's commentary consisted of: "Peppers!...Peppers! (a little louder)...Peppers! (even louder)."  It ended at three "Peppers" because the return was stopped.  Such sweet poetry.  Don't bother giving us a "turns it upfield" or "makes a tackler miss" or "gets a block" or other graduate-level communications courses content.  On the other hand, he did have me wishing for the un-precidented Quadruple Peppers Return (or, dare I say Quintuple Peppers Return) the next time he fielded a kickoff, of course to no avail.

09/02/2015 - 10:37am Obligatory posts...

It's as if this thread was calling for me to comment. Well, I got nothing. Is there any requirement that mgo-users with on point avatars participate in a thread?

08/25/2015 - 12:36pm Big Ten Commissioner

Don't sell Brandon's misplaced aspirations short.  NCAA President and CEO.

08/25/2015 - 10:59am John Navarre is a Poster Child

First of all, great diary!  I remember hating, with the heat of a thousand suns, John Navarre and - what I believed at the time to be - his countless, maddeningly inept performances.  If these last seven years have tought me anything, however, it is that longevity in following your favorite team is needed before truly appreciating the greatness or atrocities of any player, coach, or era.  As an alum/fan in my early 20's during the Navarre era, my proximate memories at the time would have been of the then-most recent and duly referenced quarterbacks: Grbac, Collins, Dreisbach, Griese, Brady, Henson.  Man, oh man, truly my salad days of youthful indescretion, green in my judgment.  John Navarre is a Poster Child for the perspective I have gained by following Michigan for now going on 35+ years.  In those days, seasons of ONLY 3 or 4 losses destroyed my autumns.  At the time, I would never have been able to even imagine the horrors, too numerous to recount here, that we would experience in the years to follow.  Navarre was asked by fans to be Montana, and he was merely a Dilfer.  Of course, perspective has also given me the confidence that college football is cyclical, and I take heart knowing that our time is near.

08/24/2015 - 6:49pm If you prefer

We could have the headphone-less, gunt army.

08/24/2015 - 12:17pm Got it.

Thanks, did not realize the limiting factors to the survey.  So you're telling me to read the details, eh?

08/24/2015 - 11:51am No Texas

Am I reading the results correctly?  I am surprised that Texas did not lead (or even make the list?!) in the list of Big XII schools.  I am guessing that data is missing.

08/21/2015 - 3:35pm Time to be That Guy

I saw one problem with an excerpt from the paragraph beginning "Morris visited Dr. Kutcher", above:  it reads: "[...] nobody in that building, including the trainers, could have any illusion that their jobs were at stake."  Should probably read "nobody in that building, including the trainers, could have any illusion that their jobs were not at stake."  Now, reread the entire excerpt.  Much better, right?

08/19/2015 - 3:34pm Nice work, sir.

Nice work, sir.  I will be stealing, thank you very much.

08/13/2015 - 12:10pm Been waiting for

When Michigan received a late commitment from Caris, steeling him from Ohio, I was excited to see what a potential MAC star could do in a much more rugged Big Ten setting.  It seems there's always one or two guys in the MAC that fill up the stat sheet for 4 years, and make some noise on the one or two chances the MAC team may have in the NCAA Tournament.  If given a chance, many of these kinds of guys could at least be a solid to better than solid contributor on a Power 5 Conference team.  Caris has done just that.  On top of being a steal, we get what Michigan has been sorely lacking for many years: a potential impact senior.  Very excited to see what he can do this year.

08/12/2015 - 1:42pm Is there any link between stretching time

Is there any link between stretching time and bloody lips, banged-up noses and turf burns?

08/12/2015 - 11:39am Illegal Blocks in the Back

Didn't his (few) good returns seem to be invariably called back for an illegal block?

08/11/2015 - 5:29pm Anything to Increase the Bathroom Lines

Long time reader, first time poster.  Now that that's out of the way...I'm all for anything that increased the lines and volume of people at the restrooms.  Urination troughs with triple-stacking instead of the standard double-stacking should be just the trick to make an early September game even more enjoyable.
