This country was founded on the right to free speech and to protest.  Not everyone likes the way people chose to protest, so keeping it off TV is a way to avoid that conflict.  People in the stadium will see what’s going on and it will inevitably be discussed on social media and probably in the press, too.

I’ve been watching Ken Burns excellent series about the Vietnam war.  Protest and sensoring protest was obviously a big issue then as it is now and will forever be, because we are a nation of over 300 million people with their own beliefs and opinions.  The point is to respect the right of people to express their beliefs as protected by the Bill of Rights.

IIRC, Larry Cipa was peripherally involved in why Rick Mirer spurned Bo to attend ND.  The story was that Bo was doing an in-home visit with Mirer while an NFL game was on TV.  I think it was Monday Night Football.  Larry Cipa was in the game and a stat came on the screen that Cipa was the only Bo QB to ever play a down in the NFL.  Cipa was a backup at that.  Supposedly Bo tried to poo-poo the whole thing and make it clear to Mirer that this would not be his fate if he went to Michigan.  We won't discuss what happened with ND played M a few years later.

My seats at the stadium are up high even with the goal line of the south end zone.  So, I watch the substitutions and formations both on offense and defense.  On offense, as the game goes along, you can begin to see the packages and plays and predict the plays.  If I’m predicting better than the opposing defense, then I’m happy.  If the other guys see what’s coming (a common experience in the Borges days), then I get worried.

Go with the cloud.  Let someone else handle the hardware and backup responsibilities.  It also makes upgrading your PC/systems easier.  Just point your new system at the cloud.  I’ve got multiple PCs connected to the cloud.  They share data with each other and with my smartphone and iPad.  In the not,so recent past, I worked with Box, Dropbox, and SugarSync.  They all have pros and cons.  Let me know if you need some help.

As for anti-virus protection, Malwarebytes is good.  I’ve lived with McAffee for many years because my former employer (Dell) was a partner of theirs.  There’s some new predictive software that recognizes code patterns to protect systems that is enterprise focused today.  (I.e, expensive). I’m assuming it will trickle down to consumers in the next few years.

The style of offense I'd like to see us run is one where the quarterback stays upright and can complete long passes and I'd like some nice clean holes for the running backs, too.  Those kind of offenses look good no matter what plays they are running.

As the former owner of a 2011 335xi, you should be nervous.  Maintaining a BMW is expensive, however, I must say my local dealer provided great service.  If something need to be fixed, they got it right the first time, every time.  The high pressure fuel pump was an Achilles heel for that car.  Mine failed during the warranty period, thank god.  I also had two fuel injectors fail after the warranty period which was a pricey repair.  Routine service stops aren't cheap either.  I loved the car and actually had some trouble parting with it in July in spite of the cost of keeping it on the road.

I have a 2001 BMW Z3 and I question my sanity each time it goes in for service which fortunately isn't very often.  Given its low resale value, a service stop is almost like buying my car back.

We went to games to endoctrinate my daughter.  She was 9 when she got to see the first OT game ever at the Big House...vs. PSU in 2002.  Made a big impression on her.  A few years later, we were sitting in the south end zone when she pointed to the student section and stated she will be sitting over there some day.  Then she did it.  Fortunately, the Rich Rod loss to Toledo did not derail her plans.

Speaking of Peppers, I watch this season's Hard Knocks on HBO last night.  Jabrill made it into the periphery of one shot from what I could tell.  Obvious focus of the first episode was Baker Mayfield.  He did look good in practice.  Looked like a kid that won the lottery when they showed his contract signing.  Jarvis Landry impressed the hell out of me.  He's a beast mode receiver with sick one hand catches.  Didn't realize he was such a play maker.  Came off as a good teammate, too.  They showed one of his workouts and there's no way I could handle that level of core exercise.  This might be worth following this season.  I see the Browns beat the Giants last night, so they are off the 0-16 losing streak.

Given the ND game is 3 weeks away, I guess I better practice my "day before game day" beer purchasing run to my local Binny's.  Need to maintain proper beer levels until game day.  Yeah, that's the ticket!  Bang-bang!

08/09/2018 - 11:47pm One thing to consider is the…

One thing to consider is the room the TV will be in.  Lots of windows?  Lots of lamps?  Overhead lighting?  Dark with low lighting?

LED TVs output more light, OLEDs less, so LED is better for bright rooms.  Some TV screens are very reflective, others less reflective.  So, that’s why I typically purchase TVs where I can see them such as at Best Buy.

My family room has a lot of windows on one wall and lamps arrayed around the room, so high light output and a less reflective screen are important.  In 2015, I bought a Samsung 65” 4K UHD LED TV.  At the time, it didn’t seem to make much sense to buy a HDTV with 4K coming to market.  Makes even more sense now to buy 4K given how prices have dropped and 4K programming is becoming plentiful.

I’ll be back in the TV market in a year or two.  My 58” plasma in my man cave is getting up there in age and gives me a bit more time for OLED prices to fall.

They were horrible at picking up stunts last year.  That seems like something that can be fixed with coaching.  Getting to the right place is half the battle.  So, just getting that right will be an improvement.

08/09/2018 - 10:14am You should check out some…

You should check out some tape on Jamie.  He was a master of the draw play.  He was a tiny guy hidden behind a big offensive line and would pop through holes.  Bo loved to call draw plays on 3rd and 10-15 yards to go.  It usually worked with Jamie.

08/07/2018 - 2:05pm My family and our friends…

My family and our friends were at our beach house on the Ontario side of Lake Huron.  We have power outages all the time.  It's mainly a farming area and there is a single feed line.  So, when the power went out, the only thing that seemed weird was there were no thunderstorms in the area.  Well, must have been something south of us, I guessed.  We had just ordered pizza for the kids for dinner.  Because the pizza oven runs on gas, the pizzas were finished on time.  The owner was deciding if he should just fire up everything he had on hand, because it wouldn't keep without power and he didn't expect power to be back on until after closing time.  I did the other part of our standard power outage drill -- I picked up a few bags of ice from the local convenience store and stuck them in the fridge to help keep things cold.  The adults went out to dinner and went north about 15 or 20 miles.  That town had power, so we ate dinner and thought we were just having the usual local power outage.  We got home, opened some beer and wine (because you just can't let all the stuff in the beer fridge get warm!) and were sitting on the deck looking at the lake when the power came on.  We were out only 4 or 5 hours.  It wasn't until we turned on the TV late that night that we heard what was going on.  We felt very lucky.

08/07/2018 - 11:05am I’m pretty sure my first…

I’m pretty sure my first time was during drivers ed at high school.  We drove a huge Pontiac Parriessene (sp?) the size of an Abrams tank.  Parallel parking was an adventure.  While my first drive wasn’t that memorable, I do remember that one of the kids in the group had trouble with moderation while steering.  He would tug on the wheel like he was trying to turn a cruise ship.  So, it’s the day we get to try driving on the expressway, this kids behind the wheel, and the instructor tells him to change lanes.  I see his eyes dart and can tell from his shoulder pump that he was about to saw the wheel with all his might.  I was about to shit my pants when the instructor noticed the same thing.  She was a small woman, but she reached over and grabbed the wheel with a vise grip and saved us all from rollover hell.

Fargas proved he was quite the “muddier” when he was “the man” versus Northwestern that season.  The first half was played in a monsoon.  By the second half kickoff, the field was a quagmire.  Northwestern hosted Ohio State the following weekend and the field looked like someone had been doing donuts on it.

07/25/2018 - 9:49am I installed a Nest…

I installed a Nest thermostat in my main home.  Don’t need much help there.

For my beach house, I put in a Nest thermostat and 3 GE smart timers for lights using the Avi-on app and Remote Access Bridge to control them.  We have frequent power failures at that house, so conventional light timers were often hours skewed from actual time.  With this setup, the RAB will resync the smart timers when power is restored.  Problem solved.  I also get notifications when power has failed and can remotely access the switches to control them.  Finally, I have a Nest web cam and an older Samsung web cam.  The Nest web cam watches the main entrances to the home from the inside and will record anything that moves...including a spider that dropped in front of the cam one night.  The older Samsung web cam is pointed outside at the beach so I can get a few moments of beach zen whenever I need it.  I also get to watch the crazy fall storms that produce big waves on Lake Huron.

Planning on adding a Hello doorbell in the future.

07/24/2018 - 12:09pm The other day, I guess as a…

The other day, I guess as a form of self punishment, I watched a replay on the 2010 Illinois game —- the no defense played here 65-63 win that got The team 7 wins and a bowl game.  That game was a hot mess and demonstrated the lowering of the overall talent level.  Denard and some solid guys on offense and Mike Martin on defense.  Greg Mattison and Brady Hoke took that defense and made it play above it’s head in 2011.  Coaching does matter.

So, talent level is definitely up, coaching is definitely up, and the overall trend is good.  Some gaps with the O-line and QB, but looks like that has been addressed.  We’ll see.  I’m optimistic.  Just need to breakthrough against OSU and keep the football gods at bay vs. MSU.

Incomplete but looking much better.

07/24/2018 - 10:14am I remember in the 80s…

I remember in the 80s American pony cars had a horsepower resurgence after the engine choking designs of the 70s.  Mustang and Camaro proudly packed V-8s and things were looking up for enthusiasts.  My car has a 2.0L turbo and is faster than those cars.  I'm pretty sure it's faster than the Corvettes of the 1980s, too.  0-60 in less than 7 seconds was exotic car territory at that time.  My current car is faster than the 1989 Taurus SHO I owned----and a hell of a lot easier to drive, too.  That car had all the horsepower laid down by the front wheels.  On wet or snowy roads, you could enduce some crazy torque steer.  However, the noises the motor made were intoxicating.  My Audi A5 is really tame and quiet compared to the V-6 in the SHO.

Here's a blast from the past:  [Motor Week's review of the 1989 Taurus SHO]

Somehow I suspect Brian cares very much.  I’m sure he’s trying to work out a plan to make the user base happy.  He doesn’t have an bottomless well of financial resources and doing quality software development takes time.  I’m amazed he managed to get all the years of content and links working correctly.  Give the team some time to work through the issues.

I admire your moxie to do that.  Enjoy!  Just watch out for bad 4-way windowpane.  This in no way indicates I have experience with such a thing when I went to all day concerts back in the 70s and saw Yes in their prime blow my mind.  No, not at all.

It kind of sounds like the Medieval Fair I went to back in the early 80s, but on steroids.  Which means...it probably takes weird to a whole new level.

I was trying to remember the name of West End Grill.  Ate there last year for the first time and was favorably impressed.  I’m in the “I like Logan” group.  You do need to read the menu carefully, though.  Some dishes can be a bit underwhelming, but most are very good.  They do a good job with cocktails and wine, too.

I was thinking Nebraska and Wiscy would be the prime candidates for night games.  Once we get to November (PSU on 11/3), night games can get pretty chilly.

We'd have a progression of a nooner, 3:30pm, and 8pm kickoff for our first 3 home games if Nebraska is played at night.  Tic-tac-toe.

07/18/2018 - 4:00pm I checked with the ticket…

I checked with the ticket office about ND tickets about a month ago.  Unless you've been a season ticket holder a long time with a big pile of points, you won't be getting ND tickets.  I believe they've already been allocated to the big points people.

As for NW tickets, about the same time, NW released single game tickets for sale.  I bought a block of tickets in the section right next to the tickets that will be sold through the UM ticket office.  Living in the Chicago area, I've found it's always easiest to just by tickets when the NW ticket office opens up single game tickets.

During the season, the wife and I stop at Zingerman's on game day to purchase bread, cookies (oatmeal cookies are the bomb), cheese and other goodies to enjoy at home.  But....we are still about 2 months away from a home game day.  Can't wait!

07/17/2018 - 1:10pm Franz was a bad ass dude,…

Franz was a bad ass dude, but we had a bit of a love-hate relationship driven by my local dealer's service department.  They warped all 4 rotors doing a winter/summer wheel changeover and somehow managed to destroy a tire (ruined the bead) by driving on it while flat.  They replaced the tire and I got it back with the wheel out of balance.  Had to go to Discount Tire to get that fixed.  Turned out I had two wheels out of balance. I'd go in for service and get a car back with 4 wildly different tire inflation readings.  They eventually fired the tech and made sure to tell me they changed out their wheel balancing equipment, but I was very ready to move on to another vehicle by the time that happened.

07/17/2018 - 10:05am Meet Franz.  My 2002 Audi A6…

Meet Franz.  My 2002 Audi A6 4.2 with sports suspension, seats, and wheels package and a thirst for high octane gas.  Named Franz, because the car was "pumped up" and German, of course.  I loved the fender flares on this car.  The sport seats were very unforgiving at times and the sport suspension was not agreeable with Chicago winters, so Franz would make you feel "girly man" at times.  My 2011 BMW 335xi was named Hans.  He was not quite so pumped up and would not give you a sore ass.
