|06/02/2018 - 5:03pm||That Wheatley video||
my god, football porn.
|05/30/2018 - 5:23pm||My Detroit history||
is pretty short and blah. We never ventured into Detroit much when I was a kid save for a Tigers game or 2 every year for about 15 years. I had and still have family that lives near 7 mile and Detroit Mercy but I haven't visited in years and visits back then were few and far between. Never ventured downtown at all until Comerica opened. It did not impress me then.
A few years passed, in 2008 I attended a concert at the Joe, had some free time before hand and drove around downtown a bit, I was just shocked at the emptyness and lack of activity on a work afternoon. My drive home that night took be along Grand River Ave and there were blocks of non functioning traffic signals and street lights, a complete ghost town. Probably the only time I actually felt fear in Detroit.
Between 2008 and 2012 I made several trips in and around Detroit just to explore and see some sites etc etc. It was at times just so sad to see such a beautiful city rotting away. I drove the length of Grand River Ave from the burbs and was just blown away that an American city could even look like that.
Anyway I didn't get a chance to go back until 2016 again for the Tigers and was pleasantly surprised by the resurgance around downtown, one year later I was blown away again by the activity and changes to the downtown areas and along Jefferson Ave.
Sidenote, its better now but the transition between Detroit and the Grosse Pointes along Jefferson Ave was just incredible a decade ago. I had to turn my car around just to make sure I was seeing what I was seeing. Ghetto to million dollar mansions in one block.
|05/23/2018 - 2:23pm||I'd do bad things||
to have the chance to go back and invest in Home Depot and Walmart in 1990. To go back and pick the bank winners when Glass-Steagle was repealed and short the hell out of them when it was time.
|05/09/2018 - 7:01pm||What the hell is this||
|05/07/2018 - 1:15am||First you have to ask||
where the 2019 class stacks up with other State of Michigan classes. Is it strong, weak, meh. I personally cannot answer that question.
|05/03/2018 - 1:03pm||Fuck the Penguins||
that is all
|04/30/2018 - 1:23pm||A schedule thing||
we need to work hard to get MSU and OSU home games back on opposing years. I'd be willing to see the University fork over a big check to see that awful schedule decision go away.
|04/30/2018 - 1:22pm||Stadium is in pretty good shape||
as is, we've had major projects for 15 years plus (rebuilding foundation work, outside work, sky boxes, scoreboards.) Time to let it sit and breathe for awhile.
Would however like to see them improve the wifi service.
Long term, and maybe not in my lifetime, would love to see an upper tier added in the South endzone, with a nice imposing brick facade along Stadium Blvd.
Also longterm, how about a tunnel under Stadium and Main for pedestrians to Pioneer.
|04/21/2018 - 10:27pm||saw a report||
that Vern had a serious alcohol problem he'd been battling for years. Earlier this week he was admitted to a hospital with possible alcohol poisoning and had been saying he wanted to kill himself. Very sad indeed.
|04/20/2018 - 12:54pm||I watch a lot||
I also know when long time managers leave, the next guy usually struggles to meet the expectations fans have of him and the club.
Arsenal's 6th best in England right now and the 5 ahead of them aren't moving backwards anytime soon.
|04/20/2018 - 12:12pm||Arsenal fans||
may be in for a hard dose of reality for a couple years when the next guy does no better.
|04/19/2018 - 11:21pm||I've always been a little||
wishy washy with this subject. On one hand I think its pretty bad form for a major college or university to associate itself with any kind of alcoholic brand. Its just a terrible overall message.
OTOH, I think most schools should be able to offer alcoholic drinks as long as they go by what seem to be pretty standard rules now of not over serving to individuals. On top of that most places make beers so damn expensive only an idiot would actually over consume at $9 a pop inside a stadium. Drink heavy before or after, during for such a price is just silly and those people will overconsume regardless of if its available in the stadium. There are plenty of people who love a nice cold beer during a game and could handle it fine.
But, I also remember the bad ol'days at UM when you could literally haul a cooler in and tuck it under your seat (ie right in the middle of the aisle) and walking around the stadium after a game you couldn't take two steps without kicking a beer can or whiskey bottle. But that was people making their own poor choices not a university selling them the alcohol.
Its a revenue stream, and I guess I'm ok with it but I don't want to see the block M on a billboard next to a bud light bottle or something worse.
|04/13/2018 - 11:21am||From a purely football choice||
this is a really weird choice of schools for Speight to attend. Maybe we're making assumptions on what Kelly will run offensively at UCLA but this doesn't really make sense at all.
Otherwise a good choice if weather is the major factor. But I'm kind of wondering if football isnt WAY WAY down the list of reasons to pick UCLA for him personally.
|04/10/2018 - 11:31am||Betwen 2016 and 2017 rosters||
MSU had 3 players leave the team. One went to the NBA early, 2 others transfered, one to St. Louis and one to St. Johns
3 seems like a pretty coincidental number I'm sure.
|04/05/2018 - 10:43pm||Zero chance||
that will happen with Engler in charge at MSU right now. The House and Senate will put on a dog and pony show all summer, after all there are votes to be won for next Fall's elections.
|04/05/2018 - 10:41pm||Uh||
Flint <cough> <cough> Flint!!!
Michigan House and Senate hardly the kind of people who should be speaking out about MSU's problem with documentation and following procedures.
|04/02/2018 - 2:39pm||not to stray into politics||
but yes this is how people of his persuassion operate now.
|04/02/2018 - 2:37pm||Did anyone else notice||
when Myles Bridges came under some scrutiny late in the year MSU trotted out the player dedicating season to little girl stuff again.
Sick place, sick people.
|03/08/2018 - 10:55pm||Dave Brandon||
didn't destroy Toys R'Us. Many factors including Wal-Mart who went after them with predatory pricing, later Amazon who could provide the same selection at a lower cost. And finally Wall Street who loaded the company up with debt it could never pay back as its revenue streams shrunk. And finally management (prior to Brandon) who failed to see the value that online sales could bring to the company and never managed to put a functioning website for sales into practice.
Dave was simply there to burry the coffin, and collect a small fee. (relatively small)
|03/05/2018 - 4:11pm||The NFL does this every year||
the use medical and arrest records, intelligence and drug test result issues to try and drive down the market price for player contracts.
|02/16/2018 - 1:46pm||cut some slack for enabling||
and protecting rapists? Sure ok
|02/16/2018 - 1:45pm||Engler was brought in||
to maintain the status quo, protect the school the any more major liability, and very importantly to protect Izzo and Dantonio.
They know its all over if those two are forced out as they should be.
There is way more under the rug here than you can imagine and they're super close to having it exposed for the world to see. And they'll protect that at all costs.
|02/16/2018 - 1:41pm||bingo||
As the Nasser case was blowing up their board offered a pay raise to President Simons, she graciously turned it down in front of the cameras.
Hollis resigned the day the OTL: story aired, now 3 weeks later he takes a stand against it? There's never been a more transparent effort so clearly guided by a PR firm.
|02/14/2018 - 12:34am||gosh I wish people would drop||
the thoughts that UM got him from Izzo.
MSU gave him a courtesy offer, they rarely attended his games and Johns showed little interest in ever playing for the Spartans. It was evident as early as his Soph. year Johns was looking to play outside East Lansing and MSU was looking at other targets with different profiles.
Michigan got a good player from the state of Michigan, thats really it.
|02/09/2018 - 12:44pm||He was a rising star||
in his early 20's at Michigan. Named an assistant on Bo's staff by 25. He's been an ok coordinator but nothing magical.
|02/02/2018 - 10:49pm||anger, pure anger||
the man who abused a family member of mine has been allowed to live a productive life, raise a family and enjoy a career in teaching as an honors teacher with several awards for sevrvice. I can only imagine how many people he's damaged over the years. His is befriending, take them to concerts, fun times etc and use the date rape drug
My family member has lived a horrible life of depression, anxiety and suicide attempts. Its to difficult for them to speak up about it, to confront those that protected him and wouldn't listen.
|01/30/2018 - 10:22pm||As I've said||
on other threads, do not be suprised if this goes much deeper than MSU and straight into the Ingham County prosecuters office.
|01/30/2018 - 3:45pm||He's been a malignant tumor||
on Lansing and Michigan as well.
He's one of those guys who lobbied to move State Police HQ to downtown. Low and behold the State Police found a building being built on the Grand River they could lease........from Joel Ferguson's company.
Guess who was Governor then, yep John Engler.
|01/30/2018 - 3:38pm||MSU is going to choose||
to continue sweeping, or move rug and whats underneath it into a locked closet.
Bad move imo. And fyi, Engler is not going to be the guy to ask Dantonio and/or Izzo to step aside.
|01/30/2018 - 3:23am||Joel Ferguson||
and several board members are very vindictive people. This does not surprise me at all.
|01/28/2018 - 4:29pm||Thats not accurate||
what was reported to Emmert was that there were problems with the way MSU was handling assault cases. Emmert chose not to believe it based on his relationship with Pres. Simon
|01/28/2018 - 3:06pm||The Izzo's had a boy||
shortly after the "Flint Stones" and did indeed give the child the middle name of Mateen.
|01/28/2018 - 12:56pm||Izzo||
steps aside from being "worn down" after the season, rests a year, takes that NBA job.
Dantonio will probably "have a health scare" step aside for the sake of his family.
Both will retire at some point. The disgrace will be minimalized and MSU will make every effort to make it seem partisan.
|01/28/2018 - 12:49pm||just FYI||
East Lansing was never a part of Lansing, it was rural when its city charter was granted by the state legislature. East Lansing since day 1
|01/28/2018 - 12:36pm||Believe it or not||
the culture of silence extends all the way into the Ingham County prosecuters office. This might even be way bigger than just MSU.
|01/28/2018 - 12:33pm||Wouldn't give the LSJ too much||
credit here, they've only jumped on the bandwagon once it go rolling. For the last few years they've simply accepted MSU's answers and said "ok" and moved on. Only now are they digging and with local access and local connections getting a deeper view into the issue.
The LSJ was asleep and almost as complicit to a certain degree, for not asking deeper questions or seeking deeper info. To my knowledge the LSJ has no FOIA demands from MSU like other further afield news organizations have.
The Indy Star really did much of the intial leg work
|01/26/2018 - 11:07pm||Wednesday morning||
I would have said the same thing. But when have you ever heard of a sitting University President and Athletics Director, both well respected in their fields resign within 2 days. They're out because they know its bad.
Games changed, this is different. I don't think anyone survives this.
|01/26/2018 - 11:00pm||ESPN has him on tape||
lying through his teeth. Then he lied throgh his teeth about his lie tonight.
|01/26/2018 - 10:59pm||The girl is||
|01/26/2018 - 10:58pm||fwiw||
Perles is no capacity to lead a major university or athletic department. He's 84 and reportedly declining in health.
If MSU is smart, and they've shown no ability thus far, they'll listen to their new PR firm and hire an unknown from outside the circle.
|01/26/2018 - 10:50pm||yeah I think||
the Dunnings case from Ingham County is a significant tie in to how MSU athletic cases always seemed to get dropped going back decades.
Funny how once Dunnings was off the job MSU and Dantonio had his first sexual assault case. The EL Police and Michigan State Univ police are also pretty pathetic organizations when it comes to student crimes. No more than Parking meter maids and MIP fine producers
|01/26/2018 - 10:35pm||actually Michigan State||
has large presense internationally. They have hundreds of students from the middle east, asia and India.
Do they have the prestige of a Michigan or Harvard, no, but they're known outside our borders.
|01/26/2018 - 10:26pm||If things I've heard||
repeatedly over the years are true, prepare to be shocked.
|01/26/2018 - 7:54pm||remember||
|01/26/2018 - 3:10pm||I don't know||
I consider what Briles did way worse. Those allegations directly involved Baylor football players and his coaching staff.
I don't think we have any proof Dantonio did the same sorts of things.
|01/26/2018 - 3:03pm||Hollis was||
the wedge between the truth and Dantonio/Izzo's image. That's been broken now, expect a lot of terrible things to be revealed. The rumors around town really are terrible. The NCAA can review, and will review everything title IX related.
MSU has spent the better part of the last dozen years hiding documents from anyone who asked. The NCAA does not take kindly to that. Worse for MSU is that federal laws were likely broken, jail time seems inevitable for some parties involved.
This will take a couple years. Most likely Dantonio and possibly Izzo will retire before the final conclusions come in. But their reputations will be heavily damaged.
The image of MSU you'll see for the next couple years will be defending itself in the courtroom instead of lifting Big Ten and Rose Bowl trophies.
I expect State fans to be insufferable.
|01/26/2018 - 12:32am||This||
|01/22/2018 - 9:50pm||Don't forget MSU||
has been in "lawyers" mode for over 3 years with various issues.
I think you should believe Izzo and Dantonio both know things would be made public they don't want public about their programs should Simon lose her job.
If this blows up beyond something MSU can control, everythings on the table.
|01/21/2018 - 6:59pm||I think a wormhole||
is how I found MgoBlog
|01/15/2018 - 10:17pm||the reason it hasn't become||
a bigger national story is the LSJ, Detroit News and Detroit Free Press, along with the local television stations basically laid down on the story and reported it as if it were just a minor thing for a long long time. Refusing to ask the deeper questions of who knew and how long. Nearly everything the public learned about this case came from court proceedings, MSU wasn't forthcoming with anything and the press did very little to push the story.
