I’m embarrassed that Penn State is even in the Big Ten, and I now feel the same way about Michigan State.
|05/18/2018 - 12:47pm||Our defense will be a problem||
Our defense will be a problem for them, because our defense is a problem for everyone, unless the offense stalls and defense gets tired, as happened in last year’s losses.
The offense should be better, simply by virtue of WR and QB experience, talent, new coaching, etc. But we really need to see a complete game to know what this team is capable of.
On paper, we should improve by at least a couple of games over last season; I’m hoping for more than that.
|04/02/2018 - 11:57am||I figure if we can beat MSU||
I figure if we can beat MSU twice, Purdue, and the other teams predicted to finish ahead of us, we’re as capable of winning this one as anyone else. The team wants to win, and knows how to win.
This is a winnable game. Execute the plays, take decent shots, and Michigan wins. I don’t care by how much. Just win the game.

Might be just a little early to determine his legacy. Legacy implies reflecting back at a bit of a distance, as far as I’m concerned.
|04/01/2018 - 5:40pm||I have a confession to make:||
I have a confession to make: I’ve rooted for OSU against non-conference opponents in big games any number of times.
I know. Awful. But I really like it when B1G teams do well outside the conference. To some degree, I think it raises the perception of the conference to have good teams.
I’ll go crawl into a hole now.

Go Blue. This team is not going to be afraid of anyone.
BTW, my buddy who wrote “One Shining Moment” is an A2 guy. He’ll be at the game, cheering on the Maize and Blue!
|03/31/2018 - 11:58am||I don’t want to be that||
I don’t want to be that overconfident guy, but we have more talent, an equally disciplined team, and a world-class coach. I’ll be surprised if we don’t win, even if it turns out to be uncomfortably close. But I think it’ll be not that close.
Michigan 81, Loyola 65.

I didn’t realize that Sister Jean was playing!
Go figure. My mom’s 93, but she didn’t make the basketball team. However, she’s rooting for Michigan. Go Blue!

Gosh, I just can’t wait to be dead and buried in Michigan in 2100, then.

We should take up a collection and buy a Rutgers season ticket out of pity. They could probably use the dough.

Glenlivet, Glenfiddich, Macallan are all excellent single malts. I’m not a fan of blended whiskey, though of course it’s a matter of preference. There’s no “best.” All are different.
|02/23/2018 - 11:56am||I kind of agree. Two ten win||
I kind of agree. Two ten win seasons out of three isn’t a bad thing for most teams.
On the other hand, the offenses weren’t stellar, just very good during those seasons. Stellar offenses might be needed to win the division, beat the rivals, etc. If Harbaugh can get to stellar with the offense, and match the defensive play, well, then we might have some championship seasons, as opposed to “very good but also-ran” seasons.
If in fact Drevno resigned, I’m confident it was a mutually agreed thing with JH, who decided that change was needed. I trust JH’s football judgment.
|02/19/2018 - 8:26pm||I started a law practice, and||
I started a law practice, and after quite a while in law, started a company in the music business. Both did fine.
Back when I was a lawyer, I told folks to be patient. It takes about 5 years to have even a potentially successful business reach the point where it’s (IMHO) truly stable. As everyone else has said, work hard.
One thing I used to do was set goals for the business on a weekly basis. I constantly evaluated costs, cash flow, financing, overhead. I also made reasonable projections in order to set those goals and make business decisions, such as expanding, relocating, hiring, etc.
Finally, the last bit of advice is don’t lie to yourself. If it’s not going well, don’t think it will eventually right itself if you just keep doing what you’ve been doing. Fix the problem, or shut down the business. If you go off blindly into the night, you can end up with very substantial losses. So the minute you see things objectively, without the rose colored glasses, the better off you’ll be.
Also, sales are your lifeline no matter what line of work you’re in. No clients, or no customers, and you’re out of business even if you’re very good at what you do. If you’re more of a creator and aren’t into sales - it is, after all, a specialty - find someone who is and bring them aboard. Good salespeople are worth their weight in gold.
By the way, never say never. I hired my brother in my law practice, and merged firms with my best friend. Things worked out fantastically well.

|02/16/2018 - 8:48pm||Brian, I hope you’re wrong,||
Brian, I hope you’re wrong, and I believe you’re wrong. But that doesn’t make you wrong. Because I don’t profess as much football expertise as many here do.
The guy won a couple of division titles at Florida, two out of his 2 1/2 years coaching there. That’s more than any recent Michigan coach has, since 2004.
Not worried. Don’t get carried away with panic. There’s no mileage in it. Even if you’re proven right, there’s no mileage in it, because all you get to do is say, “I told you so.”
|02/15/2018 - 2:44pm||I agree, the guy knows how to||
I agree, the guy knows how to win, had a down year last year. It happens, for lots of reasons.
I think Brian’s wrong, too. He’s been wrong in the past, hell, we’ve all been wrong from time to time.
|02/15/2018 - 2:37pm||I don’t understand the||
I don’t understand the negativity.
McElwain was HC at Florida for only 2 1/2 seasons. They won their division twice during that time. He had a stellar record at Alabama.
Meantime there are zero division championships for our guys since the divisions were established, and zero B1G championships since 2004, the year we played Texas in the Rose Bowl.
Consider the possibllity that Michigan actually hired a very, very good coach in an assistant capacity, a guy who knows what he’s doing, and can help our offense get its act together.
|02/13/2018 - 6:56pm||Television, the playoffs||
Television, the playoffs making so many games meaningless, too many bowls, too many TV time outs, late starting times (3:30 is late if you have plans on a Saturday night), crowds, traffic, parking, and probably a million other things are negatively affecting the desirability of attending games.
Another factor that doesn’t get discussed a lot is that the fans whose generation routinely filled stadiums are getting older - it’s hard for older fans to attend a game, and if you’re over a certain age, it’s tiring to stand for a whole game because folks won’t sit down.
This news is hardly surprising.

Yes. Great post. Insightful. Correct. Right on.
|02/08/2018 - 1:54pm||Maybe the Enos hire wasn’t||
Maybe the Enos hire wasn’t exciting to our hand-wringing fan base, but obviously the guy has something seriously good going, or Saban wouldn’t have hired him away.
Tells me that Harbs is a pretty good judge of coaching talent. Perhaps, maybe, a better judge of coaching talent than our fans. It’s possible.
|02/08/2018 - 12:32am||It’s understandable for fans||
It’s understandable for fans to be disappointed by an 8-5 season, but that was entirely in line with preseason predictions made my most observers thought to be knowledgeable. The QB injuries didn’t help win games.
It isn’t surprising that high school kids weren’t thrilled to sign with Michigan after a season that was a disappointment.
But so many of the comments are made as though the folks who post here have real expertise in college football. So I’d like to ask a serious question: Who here has college football playing or coaching experience?
I’d like to know which of us might have a clue as to what they’re talking about. It appears that there’s an abundance of self-appointed experts who’ve fed on a little too much negativity.
|02/01/2018 - 2:43pm||Some posts here just make me||
Some posts here just make me shake my head. Obviously Roundtree is qualified by virtue of his experience and his skills. He wouldn't be on staff if that wasn't the case.
Harbaugh is a better coach than any of us, and were it not so, we'd be making the millions instead of him.
It's great that he's coming back to Ann Arbor!
|01/30/2018 - 2:45pm||Let’s see...Engler, the guy||
Let’s see...Engler, the guy whose idea of a sensible and concerned state government was to shut down state mental health facilities, including the one in Detroit, a decision that put mentally ill, homeless people on the streets with nowhere to go.
For some, there were then unsupervised private converted homes, that still exist, and that still result in very poor care for such folks.
This happened when I was on the Standing Committee for the Mentally Disabled of the State Bar, formed to advise the Legislature on legislation to assist the mentally ill. It created significant problems, and Engler could have cared less about solving them.
I highly doubt he’s going to do anything at MSU other than cover his ass. He is not the answer to MSU’s many problems.

You left out the giant meteor.
|01/24/2018 - 7:44pm||I always felt that Penn State||
I always felt that Penn State got off too lightly, in the end. This is worse than Penn State, or at the very least, just as bad.
The girls who complained to no fewer than 14 folks at MSU were actually dissuaded from pursuing their complaints with implied threats. It’s sick.
Simon is self-absorbed, Ferguson is a sick fuck, and who knows who else should be gone. But that’s not enough. There should be hell to pay.
I’ve said elsewhere that PSU should have been booted from the Big Ten. So should MSU, because they took no action whatsoever to protect their students, as well as little girls, hundreds of them; because they dissuaded the kids filing complaints from pursuing them; because they emailed Nassar that they “had his back;” Because the administration and their board are impossibly tone-deaf and uncaring.
By allowing these kinds of events to come down to “We’re sorry, it won’t happen again,” as with Penn State, we have a repeat at Michigan State. There do need to be hard consequences. If the NCAA doesn’t bring them, then the Big Ten should act.
I’m sorry to say this. I don’t hate MSU or PSU for their sports programs; that rivalry nonsense is childish. This is serious stuff. Here are institutions that make tens of millions off their sports programs, and that are helped in so doing by the Big Ten. That’s just plain wrong.
|01/23/2018 - 6:37pm||Maybe I’m overreacting; I||
Maybe I’m overreacting; I think institutions that are (at best) this negligent, and (at worst) complicit in coverups, should not be honored with continuing membership in the Big Ten Conference.
I felt that PSU should have been bounced, and I think MSU should be bounced based on the stench that surrounds these two institutions.
I realize that’s never going to happen, of course.
That leaves it up to the University of Michigan to decide what to do with their B1G membership. Yes, the money. Yes the research consortium. But no, there’s principle at stake, too. Maybe that’s more important than the money.
Or not. Because that’ll never happen, either. So I guess I’m just showing my frustration with the status quo. Still, it amazes me that not a single soul involved in any institution, including the Big Ten, is doing a damn thing.
|01/23/2018 - 2:41pm||Seems to me that Michigan||
Seems to me that Michigan State University is run by idiots.
Which is probably par for the course for them, and too many other institutions of so-called higher learning. Nonetheless, Lou Anna should either be fired or step down. What a disgrace.
|01/21/2018 - 6:29pm||Smart to just relax and see||
Smart to just relax and see what happens. The coaches obviously wanted him in our secondary. I’m guessing they think he’d be a very good fit.
That’s a good thing. Just let whatever’s going to happen, happen.
|01/20/2018 - 10:13pm||I hate to say it, but all of||
I hate to say it, but all of those numbers taken together are more impressive than our recent results on offense.
But beyond numbers, they won games. More games than Michigan. People who know how to coach game winning teams are good to have.
|01/20/2018 - 1:16pm||Yeah, just look at his team||
Yeah, just look at his team results. Terrible. Co OC from 2012-2016, right?
I mean, Harbaugh doesn’t know what the hell he’s doing hiring coaches with that kind of record. Good thing you’re around to tell him.
|01/19/2018 - 8:03pm||You forgot that Rutgers coach||
You forgot that Rutgers coach who threw basketballs at his team’s heads, and their AD who was another nightmare. And of course the OSU lying coach tattoo scandal.
Gosh, I wonder if it’s the gigantic amounts of money that encourage universities to enable these shitstorms and look the other way? Couldn’t be that, right?

I’ve seen Columbus. You can’t fool me. It’s a sewer with a good football team.
|01/19/2018 - 11:16am||Since the purpose of a||
Since the purpose of a university is academics, I wouldn’t call it stupid to raise the point. It’s simply part of a different subset.
A Michigan degree has tangible benefits, both in terms of prestige and lifetime income.
A winning football team has some emotional benefits, but other than bragging rights, they’re not measurable for fans or alums. Just pride.

Seems like a good hire. I feel bad for the guy, though.
Has any Lions head coach ever gone on to be a head coach anywhere else? I can’t think of one, at any rate. The Lions are where coaches go to grab the cash they can,while they can, and then go into obscurity.
|01/13/2018 - 12:46pm||They don’t make ‘em like they||
They don’t make ‘em like they used to. I think it’s because folks like Keith Jackson started on radio. Without picture to fall back on, the good ones had to tell a story in a meaningful way, or fall by the wayside.
I’ve missed his broadcasts ever since he retired.

Anyone who;d rather spend 4 years in Lincoln than in Ann Arbor is a head case in the first place, but I don’t think Harbaugh will be very concerned about Frost.

Let’s pretend kids play college football for the purpose of going to college, and say that’s not a bad idea.
|01/05/2018 - 1:19pm||The #1 QB was injured and not||
The #1 QB was injured and not up to 100% for last year’s OSU game; this year’s squad played with the QB who was third-string until 2/3 or so of the season was complete. That’s going to hurt progress on an inexperienced team (and yes, OSU was lucky that they won a NC will their 3rd string guy, doesn’t happen often).
There were lots of inexperienced players, who made inexperienced player mistakes that needn’t be enumerated.
Despite these problems, the team did reasonably well. The O-line was the most significant problem this year, and that needs to be fixed. Harbaugh sees the problem as well as we do, so he’ll do that. Michigan will be fine next year.
Harbaugh is a great football coach. 8-5 with this team is in the ballpark of what people thought it was going to be at the beginning of the season.
Yes, it’d be nice if Michigan had one unexpected, killer game against OSU. We’ve beaten MSU and PSU, don’t forget. We came within a hair against FSU next year. Let the process happen and trust it.
