How many Fr. start next season!?

Sorry...this post should probably be its own thread, but I don't have enough points to start a thread, and this was the most related thread on the board.....so, here we go:

How many incoming freshman will start (or at least contribute on non-special teams) next season!?

.....I'm posting a complete projected 2012 depth chart below, but first, I'll summarize the important news here:

A. Williams and D. Funchess (or P. Brown?)B. Moore will be the main competition for the three headed group of freshman TE's stepping onto campus next season; and I don't think he's going to play much.  If he was any good, the 4th year TE probably wouldn't have gotten beat out by DE S. Watson this season A. Williams will be the main blocking TE next season.  Either D. Funchess or P. Brown will be the main recieving TE next season.  I've seen Funchess live, but I haven't seen Brown.  Funchess looks like a real-deal NFL prospect, but he's still got a lot of muscle to put on.  (p.s. - R. Miller isn't even listed on the depth chart)

J. Wilson - I think he's almost a sure thing, game one starter at FS, moving Kovacs to his natural SS position.  T. Gordon will probably be his main competition at FS, but he too is a natural SS (as are M. Robinson and J. Furman).  T. Carter is a dark-horse candidate (never know?).

K. Kalis - I think he's got a very good shot to be a game one starter next season.  It'll essentially be a battle between him, R. Khoury and C. Bryant.  I simply think that Kalis is better than the other two options.  He looks very, very ready to play on film.  So, I'm predicting that Barnum moves to C, and that Kalis and Schofield take over at LG and RT.

T. Strobel - I think he's got a very good shot to be a game one starter next season.  His main competition at SE/3T will be walk-on N. Brink next season.  Again, I simply think that he's better.  C. Wormley and M. Godin could potentially step onto campus as better players (never know?).  C. Rock or K. Heitzman could make serious strides (never know?).  K. Wilkins could revitalize his career (never know?).  But for the time being, I like Strobel.

O. Pimpkins - I think he's got a very good shot to be a game one starter next season.  His main competition at NT will be the dissapointing W. Campbell.  I believe the coaching staff has given BWC, Q. Washington and R. Ash every single possible opportunity to start this season; and all three have failed immensely.  O. Pimpkins is a super recruit.  He's physically ready.  And if he takes care of business, he will play a lot...maybe even start.

J. Ross - I don't see him starting next season, but I do see at least one of the incoming freshman inside linebackers getting some significant playing time next season.  It could be Ross, it could be Jenkins-Stone, it could be Bolden, it could be Ringer.  I don't know who? (I've only seen RJS live).  The recruiting services all seem to be in agreement about Ross being the best of the bunch, so that's who I'm going with for now.  Demens and Morgan are very solid starters, but we've got some depth issues.  B. Hawthorne and M. Jones have been solid WLB's at times, but we appear to be moving from a 4-3 defense to a 3-4 (46 Bear-ish) defense that requires two thumpers at inside linebacker.  That really opens the door for the incoming freshman, and even A. Poole.

S. Diggs? - IF we get him, he's probably a sure thing game one starter.  To put it simply, he's a super stud.  He probably starts at one of the outside WR spots.  D. Stonum probably starts at the other outside WR spot.  R. Roundtree probably moves to his more natural SR spot.  J. Jackson, J. Robinson and R. Miller have all sort of been dissapointments thus far at outside WR.  J. Gallon has been okay at SR, but not as good as R R-tree.  D. Dileo and T. Robinson probably aren't going to be factors.

B. Dunn? - IF we get him, he's probably at least our #2 back in game one.  F. Toussaint's been great thus far.  Really great, actually.  But Dunn too is a super stud, and he'll be hard to keep off the field if we get him.  V. Smith has really become more of a third down back this year.  T. Rawls hasn't really lived up to expectations.  J. Hayes is probably more of a third down option.  D. Johnson probably won't be ready to go right away...at least not as ready-to-go as Dunn.  M. Cox's career is likely over.   S. Hopkins is now a full-on FB.

Y. Wright? - IF we get him, I've got to imagine that he's a factor.  He's another super stud.  J. Floyd and B. Countess have been great as starters.  But C. Avery and R. Taylor are probably beatable at nickleback for a guy like Wright.  We shall see I guess.  D. Hollowell I just don't ever really see being a big time guy.  T. Talbott's career is probably over for the most part.  T. Richardson is super talented, but also super small at this point.  A. Standifer is big enough, but probably lacks polish at this point.

.....to say the least, we're going to have a lot of new shiny toys to play with next season  :)

what the f**k is wrong with that father? first he kills his wife and two of his three children piloting a plane 8 yrs ago...still doesn't give it up...then he kills himself and ends his third child's promising bball career/academic opportunity at the uofm.

what a selfish moron...and he's a doctor!?  if you want to fly your own plane (or go sky-diving), go ahead, but don't make others risk death with you.

Forget LAST season.  It was

Forget LAST season.  It was great.  Now it's over.  Let's talk about next season...

Here's how I'm going to break this down: I'm going to do it in order of Big10 finish this/last season.  I'm going to list any top 5 scorers leaving.  I'm going to list the top 5 returning scorers.  And I'm going to list the incoming recruits' ratings.  Here we go.

Before we get started though...here are my 2010/2011 Big Ten Preseason Rankings: 1) Michigan, 2) Ohio State, 3) Illinois, 4) Wisconsin, 5) Purdue, 6)

Ohio State(16-2):
...loses: J. Sullinger-Fr.(17.1ppg-1st), J. Diebler-Sr.(12.6ppg-3rd), D. Lighty-Sr.(12.1ppg-4th), W. Buford-Jr.(14.6ppg-2nd)?
...returns: D. Thomas-Fr.(7.7ppg-5th), A. Craft-Fr.(7.1ppg-6th), J. Sibert-Fr.(2.1ppg-8th), J. Weatherspoon-Fr.(1.8ppg-9th), L. Smith-Fr.(1.2ppg)
...gains: 4 4-star recruits, 1 3-star recruit.
*...thoughts: OSU's going to be losing 3 of it's 4 top scorers, and maybe even all 4 of them if Buford (a projected mid 1st rd pick) leaves.  Craft returns at point guard.  Thomas was a 5-star recruit a year ago.  Sibert was a 4-star recruit a year ago.  Smith and Weatherspoon were both 3-star recruits a year ago.  Lots of talent coming in, obviously, but no supers-studs.  I think it's pretty safe to say that they'll be nowhere near the same talent-wise, and that 1st place in the Big10 is up for grabs.

Purdue(14-4):
...loses: J. Johnson-Sr.(20.5ppg-1st), E. Moore-Sr.(18.0ppg-2nd)
...returns: L. Jackson-Jr.(8.0ppg-3rd), R. Smith-Jr.(6.2ppg-4th), D. Byrd-So.(5.2ppg-5th), K. Barlow-So.(5.1ppg-6th), T. Johnson-Fr.(4.9ppg-7th)
...gains: 2 3-star recruits
*...thoughts: Purdue loses their top two scorers and their almost 40 points a game to graduation, and is bringing in a bad recruiting class.  D. Byrd and T. Johnson were 4-star recruits, L. Jackson, R. Smith and K. Barlow were 3-star recruits.  Very, very safe to say that they'll be nowhere near where they were last year.  (Robbie Hummel is done for good now, right?)

Wisconsin(13-5):
...loses: J. Leuer-Sr.(18.7ppg-1st), K. Nankivil-Sr.(9.7ppg-3rd)
...returns: J. Taylor-Jr.(18.0ppg-2nd), J. Gasser-Fr.(5.9ppg-4th), M. Bruesewitz-So.(4.5ppg-5th), R. Evans-So.(2.9ppg-7th), J. Berggren-So.(2.5ppg-8th)
...gains:  4 3-star recruits.
*...thoughts: Wisconsin is losing 2 of it's 3 highest scorers, and bringing in nothing but three stars.  Berggen was a 4-star recruit.  Taylor, Gasser, and Bruesewitz were 3-star recruits.  And Evans was a 2-star recruit.  Once again, very safe to say that this team will be nowhere near where it was.

Michigan(9-9):
...loses: none
...returns: D. Morris-So.(15.0ppg-1st), T. Hardaway-Fr.(13.9ppg-2nd), J. Morgan-Fr.(9.4ppg-3rd), Z. Novak-Jr.(8.9ppg-4th), S. Douglass-Jr.(7.1ppg-5th)
...gains: 1 4-star recruit, 1 (probably 2) 3-star recruit
*...thoughts:  The entire team is back, literally (aside from a couple student-managers).  Based - in part - on Morris and Morgan's improvements from year 1 to 2, I'm expecting to see big improvements from T. Hardaway, E. Smotrycz and J. Horford (and also from Morris and Morgan themselves, of course).  Then I think that the addition of a couple of freshman guards that can really penetrate (and - probably - a second true big man) is going to have a much bigger impact on this team than most seem to be predicting.  Mix that in with Novak, Douglass and Vogrich all continuing to round out their overall games and becoming even more consistent outside shooters...and I think that we've got a pre-season pick to win the Big-10 title on our hands.

Illinois(9-9):
...loses: D. McCamey-Sr.(14.6ppg-1st), M. Davis-Sr.(12.5ppg-2nd), M. Tisdale-Sr.(10ppg-3rd)
...returns: B. Paul-So.(9ppg-4th), D. Richardson-So.(8.4ppg-5th), J. Richmond-Fr.(7.6ppg-6th), M. Leonard-Fr.(2.1ppg-8th), T. Griffey-So.(1.6ppg-9th)
...gains: 4 4-star recruits, 1 3-star recruit.
*...thoughts:  Illinois is going to be hit hard, losing all of their top three scorers.  But there's still going to be a lot of talent on the roster.  There's the 4 incoming 4-star recruits, of course.  And then there's Paul, Richardson, Richmond, and Leonard who were all 4-star recruits themselves, and Griffey was a 3-star.  It's going to be a very young and inexperienced team, but very talented too.  Bruce Weber's a horrible coach that's never been able to do anything with talent anyways though...so I'd still rate them behind Michigan and OSU, but probably ahead or at least right with Wisconsin and Purdue.

Penn State(9-9):
...loses:
...returns:
...gains:

Michigan State(9-9):

Northwestern(7-11):

Minnesota(6-12):

Iowa(4-14):

Indiana(3-15):

PROJECTED DEPTH CHART ON

PROJECTED DEPTH CHART ON DEFENSE NEXT SEASON:

Defensive Line:

NT: Martin(Sr.), Washington(So.)?, Ash(Fr.)
3T: Campbell(Jr.), Talbott(Fr.), Heininger(Sr.)...Rock(R.S.)
SE: VanBergen(Sr.), Black(So.), Watson(Sr.)?...Heitzman(R.S.)
WE: Roh(Jr.), Wilkins(Fr.), Paskorz(Fr.)...Beyer(R.S.)

...This is the easiest position group to predict.  Martin, VanBergen and Roh are all - almost - guaranteed starters.  The battle for the fourth starting position should be interesting though.  It's looking like it'll come down to BWC (at 3T) and J. Black (at SE, with RVB at 3T).  I'm guessing that we go with BWC to increase our overall size and strength.  But, with that being said, BWC's still going to need a lot of breathers, so J. Black should still get a lot of PT.  I guess that there's also an outside chance that B. Beyer arrives on campus as a full-fledged stud, starts at WE, moves Roh to SE, and VanBergen to 3T.  Then I guess that there's even more of an outside chance that something surprising happens...like...(in order of likelihood) Q. Washington, R. Ash, K. Wilkins, T. Talbott or J. Paskorz really blowing up and taking that fourth starting spot.

Linebackers:

SLB: C. Gordon(So.), Fitzgerald(Sr.), Herron(Sr.)...Clark(R.S.)
MLB: Demens(Jr.), Ryan(Fr.), Bell(So.)...Morgan(R.S.)
WLB: Poole(Fr.), Jones(So.), Furman(Fr.), T. Gordon(So.), Hawthorne(So.), Leach(Sr.)...Jones(R.S.)

...This is a tougher position group to predict.  Demens and C. Gordon are - again, almost - guaranteed starters.  But it's going to be a battle-royale with a lot of contestants for that starting WLB position.  If I had - had - to guess right now, I'd go with A. Poole starting as a true frosh (LOVE his tape).  M. Jones probably goes into camp as the starter.  J. Furman is probably right behind him.  T. Gordon is probably in the mix as well.  Then, if either isn't starting in the secondary, J. Kovacs and/or M. Robinson could be in contention as well.  J. Fitzgerald and J. Ryan are probably backups 1 and 2 at MLB and SLB.  But once again, there could always be surprises...like Herron, Bell, or another true frosh really standing out and getting some PT.

Defensive Backs:

BS: Kovacs(Jr.), Johnson(So.), Simmons(Jr.)
DS: Robinson(So.), Vinopal(So.), Williams(Sr.)...Carter(R.S.)
CB: Woolfolk(Sr.), Christian(So.), Floyd(Jr.)...Taylor(R.S.), Brown(R.S.)
CB: Avery(So.), Talbott(So.)...Countess(R.S.), Hollowell(R.S.)

...This is the toughest position group to predict.  First of all, I think that we'll go with the best two man-to-man coverage guys at CB; and I think that those two guys are going to be T. Woolfolk and C. Avery.  At safety, who's our Ed Reed, and who's our Tom Zibikowski?  IMO, Marvin Robinson and Jordan Kovacs.  Anything could happen back there though.  If a third corner steps up, it wouldn't at all surprise me to see T. Woolfolk moved to DS("deep safety").  If I had to guess who that guy would be, I'd say, in order of likelihood - C. Christian, B. Countess or R. Taylor.  It also wouldn't surprise me to see C. Johnson in there at one of the safety positions.

I don't know if they're

I don't know if they're charging admission or not, but if you're going to go, it'd be nice of you to make some kind of a donation to Mott's Children's Hospital.

But anyways, I don't have enough points to start my own thread, so I'm going to HIJACK this one - I want to talk about spring depth charts.  I'll start with defense:

Defensive Line:

NT: Martin(Sr.), Washington(So.)?, Ash(Fr.)
3T: Campbell(Jr.), Talbott(Fr.), Heininger(Sr.)...Rock(R.S.)
SE: VanBergen(Sr.), Black(So.), Watson(Sr.)?...Heitzman(R.S.)
WE: Roh(Jr.), Wilkins(Fr.), Paskorz(Fr.)...Beyer(R.S.)

...This is a relatively easy position group to predict.  Martin, VanBergen and Roh are all guaranteed starters, IMO.  The only real position battle, I think, will be between BWC and Black (at SE, with VanBergen at 3T).  It sounds like Mattison and co. really like BWC at the 3T - I even heard Mattison liken him to Haloti Ngata there.  I guess we'll have to wait and see there, but if I had to guess right now, I'd guess that we go with BWC to improve our overall size and strength...but he's still going to need a lot of breathers, so Black should still get plenty of PT.  I guess there's also an outside chance that Beyer could arrive on campus as a full-fledged stud...moving Roh to SE, and VanBergen to 3T.

Linebackers:

SLB: C. Gordon(So.), Herron(Sr.), Bell(So.)...Clark(R.S.)
MLB: K. Demens(Jr.), Fitzgerald(Sr.), Ryan(Fr.)...Jones(R.S.), Morgan(R.S.)
WLB: Jones(So.), Hawthorne(So.), Leach(Sr.)...Poole(R.S.)

...This is a harder position group to predict.  I think that Demens is a guaranteed starter at MLB, and I'm confident - based on comments made by Mattison - that C. Gordon will at least get the first shot at SLB, but WLB is a position that's up in the air.  Jones is probably the leading "in-house" candidate there, but who knows.  Based on the film I've seen, I think that there's at least a decent chance that Poole steps in and plays a lot at WLB as a true frosh (Jones and Morgan are behind him, imo).  Then there are a ton of BS("box safety")/WLB hybrid types that could step in as well...Robinson, Furman, T. Gordon, even Kovacs.  It'll be really interesting to see how those two positions - WLB and BS - shake out.  For now, I'm just going to list the guys that were safties as safties until they're officially moved.

Defensive Backs:

BS: Kovacs(Jr.), T. Gordon(So.), Robinson(So.), Furman(Fr.)
DS: Johnson(So.), Vinopal(So.), Simmons(Jr.), Williams(Sr.)...Carter(R.S.)
CB: Woolfolk(Sr.), Christian(So.), Talbott(So.), Floyd(Jr.)...Countess(R.S.), Taylor(R.S.), Hollowell(R.S.), Brown(R.S.)
CB: Avery(So.)

...This is, by far, the hardest position group to predict.  I'll start with what I think this coaching staff views as the most important position - CB.  It'll be the best two man-to-man cover corners starting here.  I think that those two guys are Woolfolk and Avery.  It might end up being that we really need Woolfolk at DS("deep safety") though, in which case, competition on.  If that happens...or if we're just talking about a nickle-back here...I think that we'll have a battle between Christian, Countess, and maybe Taylor.  No idea who'll come out on top at this point.  Floyd is terrible in man-to-man coverage...and he's a terrible tackler as well, so I don't think that he'll factor in anywhere...unless he really improves.  Talbott, I think, is behind Christian in terms of man-to-man coverage skills.  And Hollowell and Brown, I just don't think that the coaching staff is all that high on.  Wow, getting to safety.  This is where it gets REALLY confusing.  Like I said before, we just don't know at this point how the WLB/BS candidates will shake out.  Some of the more athletic guys in that conversation - namely Robinson - could even end up at DS.  But for now, I guess that I'll leave it as a battle between Johnson and Vinopal.

BRIAN COOK = DREW

BRIAN COOK = DREW SHARP.

True Statement.

Have to learn how to walk before you can learn how to run.

How can these idiots be b*tching about us aiming to be a big10 power - as opposed to being a national power - when we are what we are right now.  I couldn't agree more with coach Hoke when he says that we need to take care of business in the conference first and foremost.  Have to win the conference before you can even get into a BCS national championship game.  If we are ever fortunate enough to win Big 10 championships under coach Hoke, and we do go to a BCS national championship game as a result...

It's ONE GAME.

Anything can happen.

Fumbles, Interceptions, Missed Tackles, Bad/Great play-calls, Onside kicks, etc...etc...etc...

you don't base your whole philosophy as a football program on winning that game - against a likely SEC opponent.

sharp got kicked off 1130 for being a moron, and he should be fired from the paper as well ---> but that won't happen bc its impossible to fire two high profile black employees within 5 years of eachother...regardless of how grossly incompetent and counter productive they are.

awesome job, world.

to the OP - you're a f*cking idiot, a dbag, a phony fan, a moron (and imagine me going on like this for two more hours).

you've never even seen the guy coach a game.  all you've done is read some stat geek sheet.  go watch the f*cking tcu game moron.  he put up 35 pts against them - the second most all season was the 'great' wisconsin's 21.  he also coordinated auburn's 13-0 squad.

go f*ck yourself with your negative bullsh*t.  maybe harbaugh or miles will let you suck their dicks.  if that's your dream...quit wasting time posting here, and start writting them letters.

f*cking moron.

Morris as a senior...Morgan/Smotrycz/Hardaway as juniors...Brundidge at the two...plus another entire - VERY IMPORTANT - recruiting class.

Beilein works wonders, and this could be a very, very good squad in 2013.  If we can land an impact recruit in this next class...it might be enough to put us right over the top.

why don't you do us all a

1) love everything he had to say about offensive philosophy.

2) love that he has a lot of great recruiting connections, especially back in CA.

3) love that it sounds like these guys are going to use our weapons to the best of their abilities - i.e. - denard.

4) love the 'speed and toughness' recruiting concept, which at least in part coincides with rich rod's.

The paradox of being a

The paradox of being a knowledegable michigan football fan - loving michigan football and hating michigan student-fans.

  • Before I get started, brief background - I was an all-state high school football player in Michigan, got my B.A. and M.A. from Michigan in education, and am now an out of state high school teacher and football coach.

Here's the thing about Michigan-student fans (which make up the vast majority of posters on this site):

95% of them have never strapped on a helmet.  In high school most of them were cross-country runners, band members, quiz-bowl studs, etc. and had little interest in, or knowledge of, football.  But, with football being what it is here, they take an interest...and being the smart/confident kids they are...consider themselves to be 'experts' by their sophomore falls.  Some actually do manage to develop reasonably informed football opinions, but most don't.

This 'student-fan' is what makes up the majority of the mgoblog community, and also - eventually - the majority of our alumni base.   It's a hard thing to deal with.  It ruins most of the intelligent conversation that could occur on this board, it turns our coaching searches into absolute chaos, etc. (see cat pictures, internet-nerd-insults, les miles-love, brady hoke-hate, etc.).  It sucks, but it is what it is, and you have to deal with it.  The solution?  Ignore what people on boards like this have to say, search hard for those rare UofM students that actually played football, and get to know some good 'wal-mart's.'

first of all, you're a

first of all, you're a complete fuc*ing fag*ot dark blue.  i'd wish that something terrible would happen to you...but i'm sure it already has...again...and again.

second of all, rumor was that jeremy gallon was getting a lot of qb time in bowl practices.  never really heard why.  maybe rr knew tate was on the border.

How good will a Jim Harbaugh-coached UofM be NEXT season!?

I personally believe it's becoming more and more obvious that Jim Harbaugh is going to be our head coach next season, and I'm so excited about it that I couldn't wait to post a 2011 outlook with him at the helm thread, like, such as.

OFFENSE:

First of all, the offense.  For those not familiar with Jim Harbaugh's coaching history, he runs sort of a pro-style spread/pistol offense at Stanford.  But he also ran more of a pure spread at SDSU.  He's not as stubborn as Rich Rod, and also much more flexible schematically, so I think that we can expect him to adjust his schemes accordingly given our talent.

QB: *Robinson(Jr.), Forcier(Jr.), Gardner(Fr.)
SR: *Roundtree(Jr.), Grady(Sr.), Gallon(So.)...Hayes(Fr./R.S.)
SR: *Odoms(Sr.), Robinson(Jr.), Dileo(So.)
WR: *Stonum(Sr.), Stokes(Jr.), Miller(Fr.), Williamson(Fr.)
WR: *Hemingway(Sr.), Jackson(So.), Robinson(Fr.)
RB: *Smith(Jr.), Shaw(Sr.), Hopkins(So.), Toussaint(So.), Cox(Jr.), Jones(Jr.)...Hart(Fr./R.S.)
FB: *McColgan(Sr.)
TE: *Koger(Sr.), Webb(Jr.)
C: *Molk(Sr.), Khoury(Jr.), Pace(Fr.)...Miller(Fr./R.S.)
LG: Barnum(Jr.), Campbell(Jr.)
RG: *Omameh(Jr.), Mealer(Jr.)
LT: *Lewan(So.)...Fisher(Fr./R.S.)
RT: *Huyge(Sr.), Schofield(So.)...Posada(Fr./R.S.)

First issue, quarterback.  I really do believe that he's going to give Denard Robinson every single opportunity to be our starting quarterback.  He saw first hand what an option QB can do in the Big10 back in Bo's days.  I think he's going to try and make it work.  Denard is a good enough passer anyways, and he'll only continue to improve in that respect.  If he stays, and it'd really be in his best NFL interests to do so, I think that he could be absolute dynamite under Harbaugh.  If he can't, and we go with Forcier, or better yet Gardner, he's still going to be the focal point of our offense as a runner/Percy Harvin-type.  Though, I'm guessing that he'd leave shortly after being moved.

Second issue, recievers.  Nothing much changes here.  We have five returning starters at reciever/tight end.  Harbaugh used 3 and 4 reciever sets at Stanford plenty.  He'll take advantage of these guys for sure.  Only difference is that Koger will be used more...and he's a real talent.

Third issue, running backs.  Yet another position where everyone is back.  This, however, is a position that could see a major shake-up.  First, Dee Hart, probably gone.  Second, Stephen Hopkins, probably our starter.  V Smith and Shaw will get some carries, sure, but Harbaugh's probably going to pound it a little more with the big boys.  Toussaint will definitely be a factor.  Maybe Michael Cox has a second life?

Fourth issue, offensive line.  Harbaugh would probably prefer bigger olinemen, and he'll get them in time, but for now, what we have is what we got.  4 returning starters.  Schofield might take over on the right side.  And it will be Barnum or Campbell (or Washington if the switch back is made) replacing Stephen Schilling.

Bottom line, we basically have 10 of 11 starter returning, and a lot of guys that played in sub packages coming back.  They'll all be a year older.  They'll all have a year's worth of the new strength and conditioning program.  It's not Rich Rod's offense they'll be running, but these guys are all very talented, and Harbaugh is a very, very smart coach.  I'd expect an overall improvement offensively next season...which means that we will probably have the best scoring offense in the conference, and maybe in the entire country.  Hard to say what will happen recruiting wise, but I think we'll see more good than bad after the coaching change (which goes for defense as well).

DEFENSE:

Jim Harbaugh has run a mixture of 4-3 and 3-4 fronts at Stanford, and I'm guessing he'll do the same here.  Once again, a ton of returning starters.  Another year's worth of strength and conditioning (and in the new program).  And much better coaching.  Should be a much better defense.

NT: *Martin(Sr.), Washington(So.), Ash(Fr.)

CB: *Floyd(Jr.), Christian(So.)...Crawford(Fr./R.S.), Brown(Fr./R.S.)
CB: *Avery(So.), Talbott(So.)...Hollowell(Fr./R.S.)

First issue, defensive line.  Should be even better.  Martin is a real deal stud returning at NT.  Van Bergen is a good player that returns.  Jibreel Black is a promising young player that returns.  Craig Roh is a good player that returns.  Should be tons of depth behind them now too.  Definitely going to be the strength of our defense.

Second issue, linebackers.  Should be much better.  Demens, Fitzgerald and Gordon are all returning starters.  Talented young players behind them too now.  Better schemes up front.  Better coaching.  Should result in a much better group.

Third issue, secondary.  As of right now (ie, without landing a stud safety), Troy Woolfolk will start at FS.  Kovacs, Floyd, and Avery are all returning starters.  Lots of talented young depth behind them now too.  Better coaching.  Better experience.  Better schemes.  Should be a much, much better group.

SPECIAL TEAMS:

Harbaugh's special teams at Stanford have traditionally been a relative strength, as opposed to the gaping weakness they've been for RR.  I can't expect that this unit won't improve.

K: *Gibbons(So.), Broekhuizen(So.)
P: *Hagerup(So.), Broekhuizen(So.)
KR: *Gallon(So.), Stonum (Sr.)
PR: *Gallon(So.), Dileo (So.)

Hagerup is a tremendous young punter, he'll only get better.  I'm guessing that Harbaugh already has a kicker in mind to bring in...which, we don't have, obviously.  Not sure what he'll do about return guys...but with all the speed and talent we have at the offensive skill positions, I've got to imagine there's someone better than Jeremy Gallon to be found if a coach is actually paying attention to special teams practice.

BOTTOM LINE:

I see no reason - NO REASON - why we can't win the Big10 in Harbaugh's first season.  It will sort of be misleading because RR really built this team up...but...now it's time for a real coach to come in and coach it properly.

Offensively, I don't care if it's RR or Harbaugh - who ran a pure spread at SDSU - coaching, we're going to have one of the, if not the, best offenses in the country.  Literally everyone on the team returns minus Schilling (Barnum/Campbell could be better?), plus one year of experience, plus one year of strength and conditioning, and plus Dee Hart as the new feature back (with RR).

Defensively, the 3-3-5 is out, and whether it's a 4-3 or a 3-4 next season, we're going to be much, much better.  Starting experience at literally every single position but Jibreel Black's (who WILL be better than Banks), plus one year of experience, plus one year of strength and conditioning, plus Troy Woolfolk as the new deep man.

DECISION 2010/11

Dave Brandon is not an IDIOT.

Does anyone really think that a smart guy like Dave Brandon is going to let one game move him from the side of the fence that he's already on to the other!?  Hell no.  He already knows what he's going to do...and if that was keeping Rich Rod, he'd say so...as opposed to letting it linger and ruin our recruiting class.

But, Brandon can't fire RR right now, because his replacement - Jim Harbaugh - wants to finish his season and coach his team in it's BCS game; and we can't go for an entire month without a coaching staff in place (or a one man Fred Jackson band).  I mean...we need the bowl game revenue, we need the returning players to make strides, and we need to land some recruits.  So...what's better than convincing RR and his staff that their jobs are on the line based on the bowl game!?

It sort of back fired a little bit, because that idiot Rodriguez thought he could still save his job with that ridiculous plea at the banquet.  But, in the end, it's all going to work out just fine.

And then, if you can get Harbaugh, just say you changed your mind and are going in a different direction.

NO ONE WOULD CARE

i'm bumping this lost thread

i'm bumping this lost thread because i'm so proud of my own post.

First of all, here's what's

First of all, here's what's going to happen coaching-wise this off-season...and I've got a good source on this.

...Michigan is not Harbaugh's dream job.  I guess he's super competitive with his brother, and he wants to go to the NFL because of it.  Still though, Dave Brandon is going to do all that he can to get him here over the next month.  If he can't, Rich Rod will be signed to a two year extension; and Greg Robinson will be replaced.

...Now, recruiting over the next month is going to be TERRIBLE.  Brandon not stepping up and endorsing Rich Rod, or signing someone else, is going to kill our chances with some of the early-enrollees that we're still in on.  But, regardless, Rich Rod or Harbaugh, we're going to have quite possibly THE best offense in the entire country, and a vastly improved defense next season.  I think that we'll be right in the heart of the Big10 race.

2011 Depth Chart:

DEFENSE:

NT: Martin(Sr.), Washington(So.), Ash(Fr.)
DT/DE: VanBergen(Sr.), Talbott(Fr.), Heninger(Sr.)
DE: Black(So.), Wilkins(Fr.), Watson(Sr.)...Rock(Fr./R.S.)
DE/OLB: Roh(Jr.), Paskorz(Fr.), Ryan(Fr.), Herron(Sr.)...Beyer(Fr./R.S.)

...DL should be solid.  Martin, if he returns, is a stud.  VanBergen is solid.  Should be better back inside.  Black has shown some promise.  Should improve as a soph.  Roh is good.  Should improve as a junior.  And then there's a lot of young and talented depth now as well, with Washington and all the redshirt freshmen - Ash, Talbott, Wilkins, Paskorz and Ryan joining the ranks.  No real immediate needs in recruiting, but we definitely need to add some developmental guys at DT.  Jernigan/Cooper/Johnson.  Don't feel particularly good about any of those guys.  Need to land one though.  This Rob Trudo guy seems like a last ditch effort.

MLB: Demens(Jr.), Bell(So.), Leach(Sr.)...Jones(Fr./R.S.)
SLB: Fitzgerald(Sr.), Jones(So.), Hawthorne(So.)
WLB: C. Gordon(So.), Robinson(So.), Furman(Fr.)

...LB's could be solid with some new coaching.  Demens is solid in the middle, we know that.  Should be even better as a junior.  Fitz has shown some flashes.  Should be better as a senior.  Cam Gordon, I think, is going to be bumped down to LB in the new 4-3 or 3-4 scheme.  He should be better as a sophomore.  Robinson and Furman are both exciting new comers to the position.  Either could start, and be good.  Jones has shown some flashes as well.  Recruiting wise, Lamar Dawson could be an immediate impact guy if we get lucky.  Other than that, it's all developmental guys.  Morgan I think we're going to get.  Frost is a 50/50 guy.

SS: Kovacs(Jr.), Johnson(So.), T. Gordon(So.), Simmons(Jr.)
FS: Woolfolk(Sr.), Vinopal(So.), VanSlyke(Sr.), Williams(Sr.)
CB: Floyd(Jr.), Christian(So.)...Crawford(Fr./R.S.), Brown(Fr./R.S.)
CB: Avery(So.), Talbott(So.)...Hollowell(Fr./R.S)

...DB's should at least be better.  First of all, Woolfolk returns.  Based on what we have going on right now, pre-signing day, I'd guess that we put Woolfolk at FS.  Floyd and Avery are better at corner than Vinopal is at FS.  Kovacs is probably the early leader at SS, but, he's going to be pushed hard by Carvin and Vinopal - who should both be better as sophomores.  Floyd should be better as a junior.  Avery, Christian and Talbott should all be better as sophomores.  Crawford, Hollowell and Brown are all added to the position.  This is one area where we really need immediate impact recruits.  Walls, Lyons, Clinton-Dix, Williams, Moore?  Need to get at least two of those guys.  Blake Countess would be a nice bonus addition also.

OFFENSE:

QB: Robinson(Jr.), Forcier(Jr.), Gardner(Fr.)...Sousa(Fr./R.S.)

...If Robinson improves as much from year 2 to year 3 as he did from year 1 to year 2...we WILL have the best offense in the country next season.  Tate, if he returns, is a solid backup.  Gardner will hopefully surpass him.  Recruiting wise, I get a feeling that we prefer this Cardale Jones kid to Sousa?

RB: Hart(Fr.), Smith(Jr.), Shaw(Sr.), Hopkins(So.), Toussaint(So.), Cox(Jr.), Jones(Jr.)
FB: McColgan(Sr.)

...I think that Hart steps right in and starts.  The RBs we have right now just aren't at his level.  Should be a great new dimension for us.  Smith is a solid backup.  Shaw moves to third string...maybe even fourth, as Hopkins adds a different element to the position.  Toussaint, Cox and Jones...eeh...all left in the dust I guess huh (how about Jones to DB, Cox to LB?).  Recruiting-wise, sounds like we're going to take Rawls if he qualifies, and I like that.

WR: Hemingway(Sr.), Stokes(Jr.), Miller(Fr.), Williamson(Fr.)
WR: Stonum(Sr.), Jackson(So.), Robinson(Fr.)...Conway(Fr./R.S.)
SR: Roundtree(Jr.), Grady(Sr.), Gallon(So.)...Hayes(Fr./R.S.)
SR: Odoms(Sr.), Robinson(Jr.), Dileo(So.)
TE: Koger(Sr.), Moore(Jr.)

...Everyone's back here.  4/5 senior starters, one junior starter.  Everyone should be a year better, not much else to say there.  Lots of depth next season with all the redshirt freshmen being added, along with newcomers Conway and Hayes.  Recruiting-wise, Jack Tabb's important at TE.  MUST get someone there.  Lucien's sort of a long-shot at reciever, but we might land him.

C: Molk(Sr.), Khoury(Jr.), Pace(Fr.), Miller(Fr./R.S.)
LG: Barnum(Jr.), Campbell(Jr.)
RG: Omameh(Jr.), Mealer(Jr.)
LT: Lewan(So.)...Fisher(Fr./R.S.)
RT: Huyge(Sr.), Schofield(So.)...Posada(Fr./R.S.)

...OL should be better.  4 returning starters.  Shouldn't be much of a drop-off from Schilling to Barnum/Campbell.  Schofield might be able to beat out Huyge too.  Recruiting-wise, Bryant is sounding iffy now.  Hobbi is an outside shot.  Might end up with James Elliot though.

SPECIAL TEAMS:

K: Gibbons(So.), Broekhuizen(So.)
P: Hagerup(So.), Broekhuizen(So.)
KR: Hart(Fr.), Gallon(So.)
PR: Hart(Fr.), Gallon(So.)
LS: Pomarico(Sr.), Glanda(So.)

...Should be better here as well.  I really hope they give Hart a shot returning kicks and punts.  He'd be a huge improvement over Gallon there.  I also really hope that we either add a stud kicker somehow (scholarship or walk on?), or that Gibbons gets his head out of his ass and starts kicking.
