To think that a 23-7 Michigan team with Ws over MSU, OSU, UCLA and Texas could be staring down a 7-seed just seems unfair. That said, JB needs to stop scheduling Indiana Basin Silt College and Alabama Gulf Coast St. A&M and start playing some decent mid majors. (And for those who say "John has his reasons for scheduling only sub-300 teams", maybe so, but he's wrong and we might have to play Kansas or Duke in round 2 as a consequence.) That said, great win for the guys over the eternally shameful Penn St!
|02/17/2018 - 3:13pm||It's funny how good OSU has||
It's funny how good OSU has been despite Dakich (who contributes almost nothing except "spirit") getting actual minutes. I guess Kaleb Wesson is just really that good. I know Wesson's a Columbus-area guy but still thought we should have recruited him ... he reminds me of the late Robert Traylor a bit -- huge guy with good hands.

MAAR will graduate from UM as one of the most underrated players to wear the maize and blue.
I like Poole as a shooter and playmaker -- and hope he can translate into an effective starter -- but athleticism is actually his weak spot. (Though it seems he is making strides to improve it.) MAAR, although maybe not the most explosive guy, has fairly good hops: remember when he dunked on Jake Layman's head at Maryland.
|02/14/2018 - 3:27pm||I know we have grown||
I know we have grown accustomed to thinking of defense as an afterthought, but I for one am really pleased that we finally have a space-eating shot blocker down low. As he bulks up, I would use him like a more trad big (thinking a Haas or Olah) who can force double teams and kick out to shooters (he was considered a good post passer in HS).
Anyway, would take Teske any day over another soft, undersized Donnal type, even though, unlike Donnal, he probably isn't going to have the occasional big scoring night. He doesn't seem afraid to bang down low with other super-sized dudes.
|02/13/2018 - 10:25pm||I see Poole as a Zak Irvin||
I see Poole as a Zak Irvin type -- boundless spirit and enthusiasm, not afraid to launch threes, not a great ball-handler, average-at-best athlete. Like freshman Irvin, he's an awesome sixth man, but not sure it will translate to 35 min a game.
I'd expect him to start next year as we don't have another true SG, but I'd love to see a big lineup with Simpson-Matthews-Iggy-Livers-Wagner/Teske.
I was disappointed that we couldn't seal the deal with Huerter in 2016 or Carmody in '18.
|02/11/2018 - 5:46pm||I agree. Even though Simpson||
I agree. Even though Simpson is way smaller than his listed 6-feet and just an average athlete, he is starting to show the range of clever finishes that he excelled at in HS. (I wasn't sure if it would translate to the big leagues.) He is especially good in transition. And his active defense is refreshing.
I have a high opinion of Matthews because he has that explosive bounciness you can't teach, but he sometimes hogs the ball and forces things. I think it will come in time.
|02/11/2018 - 5:31pm||Few thoughts||
I agree that refusing to double Happ resulted in too many unnecessary buckets for UW. That was a head-scratcher; sure, they had some perimeter shooters that could make you pay, but our guys made it too easy for Happ.
Also, the officiating was pretty bad. The offensive fouls that Matthews and Poole picked up in immediate succession were garbage homer calls. (But Matthews really needs to learn how to Euro-step around a dude who's just waiting to flop.)
Having Wagner and Teske on the floor at the same was a nice change -- would love to see more of that. I really like this new-look Michigan squad with more defense, rebounding, transition, and driving the lane, even if the shooting is not up to par. I was one of the classic JB haters that screamed every time Irvin heaved up a terrible shot but I actually find myself defending coach B year.
Wisconsin is trending downwards and is a cautionary tale about how a lack of high-end athleticism will doom even a well-drilled, disciplined team. Glad that guys like Matthews, Livers and Iggy give us some above-the-rim options in the coming years.

Can someone explain for me the inside-jokey-sounding thing about not wanting a 5-star running back? Was there a five-star RB who did something bad? I for one would like to have a five-star running back.
On a different note, we need to get Dobbs in 2019. If he goes to OSU, then, well... that might be something that happens. Or else.
|02/07/2018 - 2:55pm||Although that game was||
Although that game was complete hot garbage, I'm not as down on Matthews as some seem to be. He's still by far the most athletic guy on the team and unlike, say, Irvin, he can blow by a guy off the dribble and dunk on a dude's head. Yes, he does have some of Zak's ball-hoggish tendencies, but his game has way more upside than Irvin's ever did -- could Zak make a put-back dunk? No. He is also not slow.
In general, the team drives into the teeth of the defense too much before stopping and putting up a fugly shot. This sort of reminds me of when Caris LeVert would try to do everything and end up doing not very much. Would like to see much more transition -- where Z, Matthews, Livers, and MAAR really excel -- and more Wagner rolling to the basket.
OSU and Wisconsin are looking like must-wins if they want to get above the 8-9 seed line and avoid a second-round showdown with a 1 seed. I know we like to say "it's hard to win in Madison", but Wisconsin is 100% garbage this year so there's no excuses not to beat them.

In the absurdly unlikely event that JOK delivers a "Heisman-worthy" performance leading to a big victory against OSU's evil empire, I think it's fair to assume that there would be a QB controversy going into the bowl game. IIRC, JB slow-played Goodin because he wanted Winston, then after Goodin committed to Xavier, switched his sights to Simpson bc Winston wasn't coming here. While I feel good about the 2018 class, it's amazing how many gettable players with amazing upside (incl. freak athletes like Cain and Goodin) were passed over from 2014-17.

Matthews is the best player we've had since the 2012 class. It would be nice if JB recruited explosive athletes like that more than once every five years. He's so much better than Irvin despite not being a "shooter".
Poole is a below-average athlete but has a reputation as a decent shooter and very good passer. Maybe we should try running MAAR at the point and Poole at the two... we're not getting anything from the true PGs on the roster, might as well mix it up and play a big lineup.

I am optimistic for the reasons cited above but I think we also need to close on some elite OL (and maybe RB) targets while continuing the reload with awesome high-upside defensive players. Missing on Wilson and Ekiyor and Becton sucked, and the way Dobbs is trending also sucks. Need to put the full-court press on some of those guys, especially when they're in our backyard.

|11/21/2017 - 11:25am||I'm trying not to get too||
I'm trying not to get too emotionally wrapped up in basketball this year, but that was a huge choke. Aside from Wagner and Matthews, this team frankly doesn't have any above-average players. Watson and Davis were head-scratchers when recruited, and remain so today. Meanwhile, lightly-recruited Donnie Tillman is putting up double-doubles in his first few games at Utah, Quentin Goodin -- an elite 6-4 athlete passed over for Simpson -- looks very solid at Xavier, and Jamal Cain has a bright future too at Marquette. These were all very gettable guys with zero interest from the powerhouse programs who were passed over for less athletic system players. The team will no doubt get better but it probably lacks the playmakers to win the big games.
The looming home matchup against a shaky, young UCLA squad is looking like a must-win right now.

I'm prepared to concede that this year -- and next! -- are rebuilding years. Still, when OSU comes to the big house in 2019, I will feel very bad if we don't win. Even if OSU has a two-deep consisting entirely of 5-star upperclassmen, at some point you just gotta beat your rival.
That said, I am a Toronto Maple Leafs fan so I understand that sometimes you just gotta be ok with losing for 50 years and keep shelling out the dough anyway.

Great overview as usual Matt.
It's a shame that the top group for 2018 is so narrow -- some nice players in the group but not necessarily any instant-impact types with elite verticality, explosiveness and/or ball-handling. Seems JB is focusing on system guys that fit his mold even more than before.
I know a lot of people are big on Ryan but as with Poole, I'm not sure he gives us anything at or above Irvin's level -- likely a (good) role player on any HM team not named Michigan. Carmody is the most interesting prospect for me because of his motor and physical style of play. He seems like a guy that can really push the pace in transition and get to the FT line. The kind of guard that has been really good for MSU, IU, and ND in recent years.
Still disappointed that this staff passed on Tillman (and Cain, and Eastern, and Goodin for that matter).
Hope they really put the full court press on Weems. As an in-state guy and probably the first instant-impact player we've had since 2012. OSU is picking up some nice pieces for the future (Bazley, Wesson) and I would hate to see him go there.
As you say, with Wilson, Matthews, and Livers, the team going forward isn't completely devoid of athleticism, but it will likely be devoid of athletic shot creators in the Stauskas/LeVert vein. Which is fine if you want to be a bubble team from here on out.
