04/08/2016 - 3:58pm No Reason?

No Reason for Utah to Keep Harbaugh Out?

"Utah's per-capita share of residents with ancestral links to the tropical Pacific isle of Tonga, Samoa, Hawaii, Tahiti, Guam, Fiji and to Maori peoples of New Zealand is now the highest in the continental US, and behind only Hawaii and Alaska nationwide."

"University of Michigan Head Football Coach Jim Harbaugh announced Thursday (March 3) the hiring of Tony Tuioti as the program's director of player personnel."

"Tuioti (pronounced TOO-ee-oh-TEE) spent six seasons at the University of Hawaii. Off the playing field, Tuioti was the lead recruiter for Hawaii.Tuioti and his wife, Keala, have seven children: Teisa, Teivis, Teilor, Teitum, Teimana, Teiyana and Teinia."

Jim Harbaugh thought very highly of DT Bryan Mone  ... he told The Michigan Insider that the team had Mone ranked as the team's third best player going into last year.

A major factor in Paea's commitment to Michigan was director of player personnel Tony Tuioti, a Hawaii native who hit it off with the prospect on his first visit to campus last month.

Paea is Michigan's tenth commit in the 2017 class and the first on the defensive line. He's also a cousin of current DT Bryan Mone; in addition to genes, they share similarly impressive hairstyles.

04/08/2016 - 3:21pm UPDATE

On the mechanics of this.  We need to slow our roll here and realize that this is not just an SEC thing.  The Big 12 did not want Harbaugh in Texas and the PAC 12 DEFINITELY did not want him going going back back to Cali Cali.  It was a vote.  We didn't have the numbers.  No reason to blame Jim Delany.

http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/15162704/ncaa-bans-satel…

The issue landed in the crosshairs of the Division I Football Oversight Committee.

The vote to prohibit satellite camps was passed by a 10-5 margin. Each Power 5 conference vote counts as two votes, while each Group of 5 conference vote counts for one vote for a maximum of 15 votes.

The Big Ten was the only Power 5 conference that was in favor of satellite camps, a source told ESPN.

The SEC, ACC, Pac-12 and Big 12 conferences all voted to end satellite camps, a source said. Among the Group of 5 conferences, the Sun Belt and Mountain West voted against the satellite camps, while the Mid-American, Conference USA and American were in favor of continuing the camps.

So apparently Alan Branch is our only player from the state of New Mexico to see the field thus far.

Harbaugh clearly looked at that track record (1 for 1) and starting recruiting the state.

I think he's got two dudes in Gentry the Giant & Speedy O'Samuels.

As I recall, he specifically committed to Michigan because they said they would give him a shot at the RB position, when many others offered him at other spots.

12/31/2015 - 11:10am Like Healthcare in the United

Like Healthcare in the United States, wherever you have customer base that (in the aggregate) is not particularly cost-sensitive, pricing is probably going to grow faster than inflation (whether its for profit or rolled back into the product/service offering in order to "compete" on the criteria that the customer does care about). Of course that is not sustainable forever, and it feels like the titantic is trying to turn to avoid the iceberg.  The idea of "value" for dollar in terms of college education was almost non-existent in the public conciousness prior to the recession of '08-'09, but today "spiraling college costs" are a widely known and accepted trend.

Further study on rising college costs is incomplete without taking a look at what former Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels is doing as President of Purdue University, where tuition is actually declining:

The fact that he just walked away from the record was the defining moment of his career, one of those guys for whom there truly was more to life than football.

12/21/2015 - 3:54pm He sounds like a coach's

He sounds like a coach's coach. Re-posting my snowflake from the other thread:

He spent the first decade of his coaching career in the ivy league; in 1992 between his 5th and 6th seasons as Yale DC he spent a spring as the interim Head Baseball Coach, going 26-10 and earning a bid to the NCAA tournament.  1992 remains the last year Yale won a game in the NCAA baseball playoffs.

The next fall ('93) he was at Plymouth State (Division III) where he spent three years getting his first head football coaching experience.

From 2000-2006 he was dueling it out with Chip Kelly's New Hampshire in the FCS Atlantic 10. (3-1 from '04 to '06 incl. one playoffs matchup).

2006 was perhaps the high point, when Head Coach Brown took UMASS all the way to the FCS Championship game, losing to Appalachian State (upon their victory, App State ceremonially retired the football program and has never been heard from since).

The next two years were perhaps a bit of a let down then, 10-3 in '07 but getting bounced in the 1st round of the FCS playoffs and 7-5 in 2008.

2009 could've finally been his launching point, but he hitched his chariot to Ralph Friedgren whereupon Maryland did this to his boss:

"Before the 2009 season, many analysts projected the Terrapins to finish last or second-to-last in the Atlantic Division of the ACC, and expressed particular concern with the inexperienced offensive line. The prognostications proved accurate, and Maryland finished 2–10 for their first ten-loss season in program history. Maryland rebounded in 2010 to finish with a 9–4 record, including a win in the Military Bowl, and ranked 23rd in the AP Poll. The ACC named Friedgen Coach of the Year, while freshman quarterback Danny O'Brien became the first Terrapin ever named ACC Rookie of the Year. Citing lack of fan support, the athletic department bought out the final year of Friedgen's contract for $2 million."

When you buy out the Conference Coach of the Year in order to hire Randy Edsall, you deserve pretty much exactly what Maryland has gotten for the past 5 seasons.

Stanford gets in.  Play in game vs Oklahoma.  Then commence 4 team playoff.

Committee still matters (seeding), media gets all the debating & drama of "resumes".

No P5 conference champs left at home.

Make Big 12 pick TCU or Baylor (circa 2014).

Conference Championship is effectively "Round of 10".

Protects the regular season (OSU still eating popcorn this year over 1 loss to MSU).

Durkin was on a 3yr $800k per contract: ~2.4mm.

I would take that offer if it meant coaching in NFL Europe.

12/02/2015 - 9:59am For all the moaning about the

For all the moaning about the cost of college, newer, fancier (more expensive) dorms seem to be a significant factor in the admissions arms race.

I'd hypothesize that's because dorm quality is a very tangible factor that incoming students can weigh more easily than doing a value based "tuition+room & board" / "career prospects after I complete my 4 year degree" analysis.

Also from the University perspective, it's probably very easy to finance the construction of new dorms when you can virtually guarantee they'll be full of paying tenants year after year.

Empirical studies have produced mixed results on the relationship between a school's sports success and the quantity and quality of students that apply to the school. This study uses two unique data sets to shed additional light on the indirect benefits that sports success provides to NCAA Division I schools. Key findings include the following: (1) football and basketball success significantly increases the quantity of applications to a school, with estimates ranging from 2% to 8% for the top 20 football schools and the top 16 basketball schools each year, (2) private schools see increases in application rates after sports success that are two to four times higher than public schools, (3) the extra applications received are composed of both low and high SAT scoring students, thus providing potential for schools to improve their admission outcomes, and (4) schools appear to exploit these increases in applications by improving both the number and the quality of incoming students.

Johnson says the strangest coaching he ever got was "to NOT run fast on a play".

Desmond Morgan would change "targeting" if he could pick any rule to fix. (duh)

11/23/2015 - 6:10pm Good Post

Thinking through the puts and takes:

- If you're playing press man w/ 10 guys w/in 5 yards of the LOS, your run support is outside not in the middle of the field, right?  So you try to string plays out to the sideline more than turn them back as an LB.

- We seem to have more Nickel/SS types (Peppers & Hill): can play press, support the run, probably not as good playing a deep third or man from 8-10 yds off.

- And fewer LBs that you feel good about taking off to cover the flat or 1x1 running down the field with a TE.

- Perhaps as a compromise you could split the field and give Wilson a deep half & move him up to 10-12 yds (instead of 12-20).  Play press underneath his half and softer on the opposite side.  Don't tip this too much with your alignment though, and mix it up.

11/23/2015 - 1:51pm Penalties

I don't know if I'm just assuming the worst possible outcome every play now, but I thought the biggest "no call" of the game was when Willie Henry planted Hackenburg and did NOT receive a roughing the passer call.  He wasn't that late, but it was one of those plays that was a penalty 0 out of 10 times a decade ago and 8.5 out of 10 times today.  PSU wasted a timeout (I believe their last) after that, and a first down +15 yards could've kept the game in doubt.  (It was 14-10 w/ about ten minutes left at the time).

11/20/2015 - 1:36pm As an investor...

I can assure you that Toys R US most definitely IS broken.

11/19/2015 - 3:57pm In retro-spect I was being a

In retro-spect I was being a bit argumentative.

I generally agree that we got run all over, and when that happens, as a coach you should probably adjust to a look with more run support.  Playing both safeties at "medium" depth, vs one high & one low is as good a way as any to accomplish that.

I don't think the 3/4 vs 4/3 look makes a big difference.  I know we have both looks with a buck, but RJS still feels like more of an on the LOS player to me.

More generally, I'm saying we got out Jimmy & Joe'd vs X's & O's 'ed.  But yeah as a coach you should try to adapt.  Perhaps not Durkin's best game.

11/19/2015 - 2:00pm "If you're good enough to

"If you're good enough to play on an island, then play zero and bring that guy down into the box, and do it late, if need be."

This is your answer.

11/19/2015 - 1:56pm Yeah I agree.  What I wrote

Yeah I agree.  What I wrote was more alignment specific to the picture, but the point is: playing 5 on 6 "inside" with only 3 men on the line would be  recipe for 5 ypc inside, one way or another.

QBs that can run (well) and throw (well) are dang near impossible to stop.

11/19/2015 - 1:52pm Meh

It starts up front.

In "take what the defense gives you" philosophy, the above formation is asking the offense to run a RB dive.

5 on 5 blocking, Godin/Strobel gets blown off the ball, Guards swallow Morgan & Bolden, RJS & Peppers (unblocked except by slots) probably can't cross the line of scrimmage and cut behind the OTs to make the play, have to scrape over the top & you're handing them five yards every time.  If you do "run blitz" the two OLB/Buck/Nickel-type substances, then Bubble/bubble/bubble.

Indiana has a good OL, Sr QB that is probably 2nd string All Big 10 behind a top 10 draft pick, and a big transfer RB (outta no where!) that was breaking tackles ALL DAY.

We were playing our 2nd (Hurst) and 4th/5th (Godin/Strobel) Nose Tackles (assuming Mone was 3rd, not even counting Pipkins).   They also play with a ton of pace, which left our short-handed DL gassed.

Henry (allegedly) had a quiet, decent day.  I think we all saw Wormley get reached by the OT easy as pie during overtime for 15 yds a pop on that outside zone.  He must've been gassed because fresh I don't think he gives that up to Jake freaking Long that easily.  That wasn't option football, it was just a man on man butt-kicking.

11/18/2015 - 3:50pm Yep

We have a very lumpy roster.  Enjoy the next 14 regular season games (plus some bonus football hopefully).  After that, trust Harbaugh to recruit and coach 'em up because the team will rely an awful lot on guys who are currently (unsigned) commits and freshmen that are redshirting.  That's college football to an extent, but our roster has been a bit lumpy ever since Rich Rod attrition.

11/18/2015 - 12:44pm Big 10 QBs

Cook #1, Sudfeld #2.  OSU QB (Jones+Barrett) could share by the numbers, but that won't actually happen I don't think.  Beathard #3, Rudock #4 as it stands today.  Could change with two games to go.

If you think Sudfeld won't win it because they're 4-6, then I bet it will go to undefeated CJ Beathard over Rudock who is having a very similar season statistically.  Tommy Armstrong Jr. also has a decent case (TDs & YPA) but is 5-6 & leads in INTs.

Stave and Hackenburg playing decent, but seem a step below.  The rest ranges from meh to tire-fire.

Of all programs I don't think we can be throwing stones about being overrated at the end of September: Exhibit A - the last decade.

11/17/2015 - 4:14pm Exactly This

You see, I don't like Mark Dantonio.  I never told you to like him.  I find him to be a bit annoying with the media, but then of course I do...  He coaches one of Michigan's rivals and has won altogether WAY TOO MANY football games for them, especially the head to head match ups.

Maybe you know him personally or maybe his interactions with the media are enough for you to believe he's a "douchebag" and a "dickbag".  But I just don't see it dude and I don't think its a good look for you (those comments or this OP).

I'm sure some people agree with me, I'm sure others don't.  I'm obviously not going to change your opinion, but I wanted to speak up for those lurking to show that we don't all share your opinion.

11/17/2015 - 4:01pm Okay

What about "some people have said that Michigan is not an elite job anymore".

Brady Hoke Answer: "Who says that?" /incredulous / head shake

When a reporter asks a question like "Hey, don't you guys suck?" or "Isn't it true that no one cares about your team?" ... Coaches will handle it different ways.  But I don't blame them for being annoyed.

Jim Harbaugh literally called it "disrespectful" to get asked about other coaching jobs this year:

http://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2015/10/20/9574379/jim-harbaug…

As LSA noted, Lloyd Carr literally responded with "Why would you ask a dumb question like that?".

Chip Kelly, to cite a random example, just makes stuff up:

http://www.csnphilly.com/blog/700-level/chip-kelly-wont-start-sanchez-d…

11/17/2015 - 2:52pm Man

The Dantonio "disrespect" obsession/meme on this board has gone way overboard.  He's playing the hand he's dealt.

Losing to MSU sucks.  Losing the way we lost sucks worse.  If you have personal issues "in real life" with terrible people who happen to also be MSU fans, I'm sorry; you should remove yourself from as many of those interactions as possible.  But the ritualistic Dantonio voodoo doll stabbing has to stop.  Posts like this show that certain Michigan fans are AT LEAST as obsessed with MSU as we claim they are with us.  LET IT GO.  #cumongman

Chargers QB Jim Harbaugh refused to answer questions on Wednesday from San Diego Union-Tribune beat writer Jim Trotter, who wore a 49ers sweatshirt to the team's practice.  Trotter wrote about the incident in Thursday's Chargers notebook, but he did not name himself as the reporter.   Harbaugh said it was "pathetic" a reporter would wear the logoed sweat shirt.  Harbaugh: "I don't talk to anybody in a San Francisco 49ers shirt.  How could you wear that out here? ... Seriously, man.  How could you wear that out here to a Chargers facility?"  When Trotter said he was not employed by the Chargers, Harbaugh said, "Well, I don't answer any questions from anybody wearing the enemy's jersey".
