Fundamentally essential as a person? Absolutely. Essential to football? Absolutely not.

11/07/2018 - 8:55pm It's a fundamentally…

It's a fundamentally essential to the game of football that results matter. Otherwise you're playing an entirely different game where the goal is to compile the best statistical profile, not necessarily win the game. In that case, mind as well reward the win to the team who gains the most yards, not scores the most points.

11/07/2018 - 7:33pm If there's a tie in their…

If there's a tie in their record, they haven't played, etc. great, use that data! But the whole point of playing football is to settle it on the field. You reward the victor. This isn't a computer algorithm designed to pick the optimal mix of stocks, it's a system to reward those who have earned a chance to play for the championship. It's not about who's better, it's about who deserves it.

Now if it's 1 loss ND vs 1 loss Michigan, forget everything I just said.

11/07/2018 - 7:02pm Exactly this. We already had…

Exactly this. We already had a chance to prove we were better than ND on the field. It doesn't matter if we actually are better (would LOVE a rematch). If you're not rewarding teams for winning games, then why play at all? The purpose of football is not to generate advanced statistics.

That would be a really good bowl game. Strength on strength, weakness on weakness.

They'll issue some token punishments that alter record books, but not anything in the real world, or provide some minimal extra challenge to the offending teams (e.g. dock a scholarship)

It's self-serving in that he's already laying out his excuses for losing to Bama ahead of time. Always good to get a jump on that (assuming your fan base has zero ability to be rational, which... check!).

Good thing he's not 6'2", otherwise we couldn't tell scouts he's too short for the NFL. Better stick around Ann Arbor for another year and work on growing taller.

The main page (and a previous thread) stated that he was done with OSU football. Withdrawing from the school entirely is a new, if minor, detail.

I used to go run the steps in the stadium when I was a freshman and sophomore ('02-'04). It was regularly left open then, so no reason these need to be pre-9/11. I think they started regularly locking the gates in '04 or '05.

I think it's pretty damn reasonable to expect people to read the blog somewhat regularly before posting. No, you don't have to comb every thread to ensure what you're saying isn't buried in comment #213 from four days ago. But this contributes nothing.

If you need to vent, find a friend or hop on the MLive comment section. This blog is predicated on providing interesting, informed analysis.

Kelly's also smart enough to adjust to his talent. You don't have the kind of success he had in college by just doing something repeatedly and not adapting.

I think the surprise is more that he hasn't developed one of the young quarterbacks to supplant the one year patches. Which... is basically another way of saying "Peters doesn't looks like a hit and McCaffrey hasn't broken though yet."

So... what exciting topics have we failed to capture on the board? Threads are going up for single crystal ballz. I guess we are missing out the iterations of "here's my overly optimistic/pessimistic assessment of the upcoming season, let's fight about it!" threads that normally pop up around this time.

05/07/2018 - 3:55pm So this is the real

So this is the real problem:

"And from what my eyes told me watching the game, OMs OL may have also been slightly worse than UofMs. Idk, hard to compare bad to bad and declare a "who's a little better" of just eye test and no metrics, but it's possible they were slightly not as good."
It doesn't matter if our OL is a little better than Ole Miss's, it's probably still in the same range.

05/07/2018 - 2:05pm "Initial reviews of the Bama

"Initial reviews of the Bama and LSU indicate that the Ole Miss OL fell apart against top-end rushers and Patterson spent a lot of time running for his life."

So given our OL situation, those games should be pretty informative for games we're actually interested in?
