06/20/2018 - 10:11pm The admissions office makes…

The admissions office makes all kinds of concessions for sports. If these guys weren’t getting cleared it’s almost certainly for legit reasons because if it was possible to get them in, they’d be in.

06/20/2018 - 3:40pm Sure not every recruiting…

Sure not every recruiting miss is a mistake but it seems like they fucked up the Dobbs recruitment and in general lost a year and half of in state recruiting momentum when they lost ty wheatley as an in-state ace and tried to backfill him with Drevno and Pep.

06/20/2018 - 3:09pm Maybe now we can move on…

Maybe now we can move on from Belleville hates Michigan conspiracy theories as some bullshit excuse for recruiting misses with this one. So its a win win of a good player and the death of a stupid excuse from people who can't possibly believe any mistakes can be made by the coaching staff.

06/19/2018 - 2:04pm Yeah but if they are playing…

Yeah but if they are playing each other Charles Woodson is covering Braylon. Braylon might be better overall but Toomer and Terrell are going to have more success against Stribling and Clark than Braylon would against Woodson.

For both teams the defenses are the stronger unit and it would be a low scoring game but the 5 star defense is better than the 3 star defense. Brady might make some hay targeting David Long but Roy Roundtree isn't busting open for huge gains against Long and that offensive isn't holding up against a Gary, Brandon Graham pass push with Peppers blitzing off the edge. Neither team is having consistent success running the ball either but Woodson is more likely than Peppers to return a kick for a TD and its more likely Henne is able to hit one of Toomer or Terrell on a 50 yard bust than vice versa.

06/19/2018 - 1:35pm A) I think the 5 star team…

A) I think the 5 star team wins B) who would win that game tells you literally nothing. The much larger number of players that are eligible means the 3 star team can have a terrible hit rate but still do well overall when looking at a 30 year time period. If you are looking to build the best possible team over any 4 year span having as many 5 stars as possible is the most effective way to do it.

06/19/2018 - 10:32am You can also sign…

You can also sign endorsement deals if you'd be a big enough name.

06/18/2018 - 8:34pm Yeah except that is not how…

Yeah except that is not how these things worth. If he believes in his skill he won't be in college for 4 years to get a degree. Two years of classes at Michigan carries relatively little value. So the tuition room and board is really like an investment that only starts vesting after 4 years when he only plans to be at his next job for 1 or 2. When you factor in the additional time commitments and restrictions of being an NCAA athlete and I don't blame any prospective early entry candidate for picking the OHL.

06/18/2018 - 4:09pm Sucks but can't blame a kid…

Sucks but can't blame a kid for choosing to get paid while developing over doing it at school.

06/16/2018 - 1:33pm You are getting some cheap…

You are getting some cheap ass dress shoes.

06/14/2018 - 8:01pm Yeah except that is not what…

Yeah except that is not what I said. I argued bringing on Jeff George as a walk on was either a not great sign about qb development or poor roster management because walk on slots are valuable slots that can be utilized effectively to support the team in positions where lets of players play. The emergence of a walk on supports my point, I never commented on the ability or lack of ability of Harbaugh and Michigan to develop walk ons, I cited Wisconsin as an example of why walk on slots are valuable and giving one to Jeff George is a waste of a slot or a sign the coaches don't feel comfortable with QB depth.

06/13/2018 - 3:42pm This is such a bad list. I…

This is such a bad list. I've been to Des Moines for work and its not a city. Its a small downtown with a massive "metropolitan area" to get to the population numbers. Comparing major cities cities to places like Fayetville, Des Moines, Hunstville, etc is just ridiculous. Majori cities have suburbs larger than those places in their metropolitan area.

Also the measures of where is a good and bad place to live are dumb. Acting like crime and poverty impact all people equally is stupid. Its sad how much inequality there is but I would much rather live in NYC, Chicago, LA, DC, etc over Des Moines or Huntsville because those cities actually provide arts, and a diverse food scene, and culture, and numerous other things and the fact that crime rates are technically higher mean nothing to my upper middle class ass and the life I lead. I would much rather live in Detroit than a third of the cities on the top 10 list and my quality of life would be fantastic.

06/13/2018 - 2:34pm I disagree with your…

I disagree with your assessment of a BGS but its true that this isn't the right decision for him. A general studies degree can be used for people in sports who want to avoid academic problems. It can also be used by students who have a diverse array of interests across a variety of fields and are willing to put in the time and effort to create a cohesive course of study that builds towards a goal. To do the second option successfully you need to be a driven person with a goal in mind. Maybe you are looking to go into public policy (I know there is an undergrad public policy degree now but there didn't used to be) and want to take high level course in history, philosophy, political science, sociology, and econ. You could double or triple major and because of individual major requirements have to cram your schedule or stay longer, or you could use a BGS to take all of those courses. It then also becomes about how you sell the degree post graduation, being prepared to talk about why you made the course decisions you did in college and justify them.  Its a terrible plan for this kid but it gets shit on and can be a completely legitimate course of action if its well thought out and not just a, I want easy classes experience.

06/13/2018 - 2:26pm Yeah fuck teachers, low…

Yeah fuck teachers, low income housing experts, most people who work in non-profits that work with people who are struggling in society.

Also of course you can get an interview at NASA for a variety of non engineering or physics degrees. You can be a communications major and wind up being one of the most important people at the organization, you could be an artist who helps design program and marketing materials that are key to messaging what NASA does which is necessary to get the funding support to keep NASA's doors open. You can be any number of degrees and work in a governmental affairs office of NASA working to keep it open and funded. Sorry you have such a shitty trash world view.

06/13/2018 - 10:49am Having 3 non true freshman…

Having 3 non true freshman QB's out of 4 on the roster is a perfectly fine situation. Elite teams around the country are winning with true freshman and rs freshman qb's let alone rs sophmores and juniors. I know its a fun excuse but somehow Michigan is the only team that needs a two deep of seniors in order to have any shot of winning games.

06/13/2018 - 10:46am Its the message it sends…

Its the message it sends. Sorry not seeing nothing but positive remarks and Harbaugh can do no wrong counts as a troll to you. Must be easy to win an argument when any opposing viewpoint you can just brush off.

Even with walk ons there are limited roster spots. Schools make good value with walk on spots, its something that Wisconsin does extremely well. Every roster spot including walk ons comes with an opportunity cost. If the coaches have faith in Patterson this year, one of Peters or McCaffrey for next year and for Milton at all having Cade as the 3rd string QB in 2019 is a fine situation and this roster spot could be used on a position where recruiting projections are much less accurate and development can occur later such as on the offensive or defensive lines. Either Harbaugh is doing a favor to a friend, which is a dumb way to run a team, or he still isn't completely confident in Peters, McCaffrey, and Milton which is a problem with recruiting and development. You can take your pick but every roster decision is made for a reason and none of the available reasons are positive.

06/13/2018 - 9:21am Injuries are a part of…

Injuries are a part of football but other teams somehow manage to put together competitive teams without 5 Qb's on the roster.  If your top two QB's get hurt you are probably having a bad year and that is just as true if Jeff George is our 3rd string QB as it was with O'Korn last year. Its better roster management to say if we get to our 4th string QB it means our offensive line isn't good enough and focus that roster spot on improving another part of the team rather than on a 4th string QB who might be slightly better than a walk on.

06/13/2018 - 8:05am So one of if not both peters…

So one of if not both peters and mccaffrey are transferring and the staff also has zero faith in the other being good. Qb development has been a complete and utter shit show and taking another grad qb shows the staff has zero faith its getting any better.

Gee it’s really difficult to figure out why Michigan keeps not getting their top qb recruit.

06/07/2018 - 12:34pm Apparently Franklin has been…

Apparently Franklin has been pushing hard the angle of guys getting to help the first black coach win a national title in college football and it is certainly working.

This is a bad sign. Its not the end of the world but Michigan's recruiting needs a big year incredibly badly. I know our class is ranked 7th right now but that means absolutely nothing and if you look at the guys we lead for versus the guys osu and psu lead for its pretty clear that unless something changes in the fall we are going to be the third ranked class and outside the top 10 again.

06/06/2018 - 12:14pm There are maybe 5 players in…

There are maybe 5 players in the NBA today who can get a coach fired. This is so overstated. The pistons job isn't middle management at Amazon, its being offered the CEO of yahoo when you are the CEO of Five Guys. Sure you run a relatively well known establishment and Yahoo has been struggling but they are at completely different levels of prestige so you sure as hell at least take the Yahoo interview.

06/06/2018 - 12:08pm You are on a college sports…

You are on a college sports blog but this just isn't that true. Significantly more people watch and follow the NBA. In K and Roy Williams you named the two longest tenured at the biggest schools coaches that are both probably top 10 all time college coaches and the list of college coaches people knows better probably ends there. If you ask people who follow basketball who the best coaches are you'll get greg popovich, steve kerr, brad stevens before you get any college coaches except for maybe K because of his work with the national team.

And NBA coaches may be disposable but they also tend to get other jobs. Casey is the favorite for the Pistons job a month after being fired. Scott Brooks went from OKC to the Wizards, D'Antoni has coached multiple teams, and the list goes on. The NBA is the highest level in the sport, people in the sport are competitive and for super competitive people obtaining success at the highest level is the ultimate goal. To pretend like college basketball holds a candle to the NBA in terms of the basketball being played is asinine.

06/06/2018 - 11:24am I enjoy Brian being…

I enjoy Brian being incredibly wrong and then getting really defensive about it. Any NBA job is considered more elite than any college job. If you don't think that its because you don't like the NBA. Now it might not be a perfect fit in every situation, personalities might clash, some guys might like recruiting a lot, etc. But the job is more prestigious and it makes perfect sense that Beilein would be interested even though the Pistons are in a bad spot roster management wise.

06/03/2018 - 11:38pm Its almost like there are two

Its almost like there are two sides to a negotation. Weird.

06/03/2018 - 10:11pm Lol at people being surprised

Lol at people being surprised a coach would want ot coach in the nba. Its the highgest level, its what everyone in basketball aspires to. Every college coach will at least listen when called by an nba team.

06/01/2018 - 6:35pm The NBA is the highest league

The NBA is the highest league

06/01/2018 - 2:15pm Any individual class or car

Any individual class or car can be different and chevy is having a pretty good run in the sedan space but yeah that is still the general truth about cars. Not everywhere is detroit and for people who don't have connections to the car companies they want to and should buy the best product, that will last the longest, and be the best investment. Those tend not to be the american car brands because that has never been their focus.

06/01/2018 - 11:23am Lol at people should buy

Lol at people should buy american. Why? They should buy the best product at the best price. I had no idea people thought Dodge was a cool brand, that is news to anyone I would know. Jeep makes mediocre cars, the Cherokee has a massive transmission issue and is known to need a ton of repairs. The non american brands have better gas mileage, better performance, and better resale value.

And the American car companies are showing again why they are behind with Ford dropping cars, being behind in the development of electric cars, etc. and when gas prices go up again and automated cars make car sharing a more realistic option for more people when a car can come to you they will continue to fail.

06/01/2018 - 9:48am This recruiting class will be

This recruiting class will be entirely dependent on this season. Get a couple big wins and we can get a top 10 class, have a year like last year and finish an empty 8-5 and this class will end up closer to 20th than top 10.

05/30/2018 - 12:09pm Chaos is probably about to

Chaos is probably about to essentially wipe out GT and make them useless allies for a few turns, really going to need Florida to come out swinging

05/30/2018 - 9:05am A lot of people making

A lot of people making declarative statements about this decision with maybe like 5% of the info. Par for the course on the internet but we have literally no idea what is going into this decision, what he is hearing from teams, what he is hearing from coach, what else is going on in his life, etc. Stop pretending like you know what would be best for him.

05/29/2018 - 9:09pm Nick ward is good at

Nick ward is good at basketball if Izzo ever plays him but he doesn’t have a place in todays nba.

05/29/2018 - 7:34pm I don’t think our fan base

I don’t think our fan base has literally any impact on the outcomes of games. I think in football where the team on offense can be harmed by not being able to communicate some fan bases can have a marginal impact. I watch sports because I enjoy, not because I impact anything. Why do you watch games on tv? Is your carefree attitude being sent through the airwaves?

05/29/2018 - 4:50pm Wagner stayed, Burke, McGary,

Wagner stayed, Burke, McGary, GR3, and Hardaway all stayed another year than they absolutely had to. Plenty of guys have stayed, some have left.  On the football side tons of potential late round draft picks have come back for another year, most of 2015's dline, willie henry, taylor lewan, etc.

People only remember the perceived negatives. We don't win shit for a variety of reasons but every elite football and basketball team wins games with freshman and sophmores at key positions.

05/29/2018 - 4:30pm Yeah it only takes one team

Yeah it only takes one team to look at his form, believe he can improve as a shooter in their program to make going into the draft the right decision for Matthews. At Michigan he could improve his shot and raise his draft stock. Or the team could struggle to spread the floor with Teske at center and Z at PG and his slashing ability could be harmed and his draft stock drops just by being another year older. Or he could get injured, etc. Getting paid to focus on basketball full time is the quickest way to develop your game, if even one team offers Matthews that he should take it.

05/29/2018 - 3:13pm I'm sure there is some other

I'm sure there is some other random italian dude that will hit all the shots to replace him. Jay Wright has built a damn machine

05/29/2018 - 12:52pm The red alliance is in a much

The red alliance is in a much stronger position because the east coast has so many more territories. I don't know how any one individual team wins this game but if we can somehow convince a&m to turn on Nebraska that would be helpful.

05/29/2018 - 11:33am Obviously a team needs to be

Obviously a team needs to be good and Vegas is good but it also means being lucky. The presidents trophy has existed since 1985, only 8 times has the best regular season team won the stanley cup. Teams that have won the presidents cup have also lost 6 times in the first round. So its almost as likely for the best team over the course of 82 games to lose in the first round as it is to win the stanley cup. That shows how much luck is involved in the game of hockey. Any team in the playoffs is an above average team so they are all good enough to win the cup.

In the NBA the team with the best regular season record wins the title 50% of the time. The NFL, even with a one game elimination style sees the team with the best record win a championship more frequently than the NHL. The only league where the regular season means less and thus means being the best team means the least is in baseball, another sport where luck and flukes tell more of a story than skill (see the best players in the world still getting out nearly 7 out of 10 times). The uncertainty makes the playoffs exciting, it doesn't result in the best team winning, which is fine.

05/29/2018 - 11:19am You keep talking about

You keep talking about fanbases like it matters. The NHL playoffs are the sport where home ice matters the least, the fanbase isn't impacting the outcome of the game. The penguins let Fleury go unprotected because they had Matt Murray, a cheaper younger player who also was very good. Vegas got incredibly fortunate that Pittsburgh had two really good goalies. As a team they had two five star QB's on the roster. It would have been like if JT Barrett left after Cardale Jones won the starting job. Plenty of goalies have had elite years in their mid to late 30's, its not like Fleury is some old timer, he is a former #1 overall pick who at his best has always been an elite goalie but had a couple mistakes in the playoffs for two years and the Penguins went with Murray.

These guys weren't cast offs. On top of one goalie teams could protect either 8 skaters however they wished or 7 forwards and 3 defensmen. Any player who had no trade clauses had to be protected. The guys they were picking were at worst third liners, not cast offs. Because of having to protect guys with no trade clauses plus teams wanting to protect younger players they got a few veteran second line level guys. What vegas really shows is that depth and having zero holes is just as valuable as having a couple of star players.  Vegas got lucky and a few good seasons from unexpected sources, the fanbase has nothing to do with it and its not nearly the story people want it to be.

05/29/2018 - 10:08am If ND wants to give up a home

If ND wants to give up a home game and play in front of a 60-40 crowd in Chicago that works for me.

05/29/2018 - 8:13am This post is just absurd.

This post is just absurd. First Vegas has a couple first/second line guys who were just on really expensive contracts Vegas could afford. They also got a lot of second/third line players due to the nature of the draft. Throw in the fact that they got the equivalent of a 5 Star already championship winning goalie which is a position that has more influence on a game than a qb does and your argument falls apart. This is the team with the equivalent of a 5 Star at the most important position, a few 4 stars sprinkled throughout the roster and the rest of the roster is made up of players who are technically three stars but probably received a 4th Star from one of the rankings. So a solid team.

And the Stanley cup isn’t the hardest to win in pro sports. It’s little been proven that hockey is the game most influenced by luck. This is probably the worst capitals team of the ovechkin era coached by an incredibly conservative coach who couldn’t get multiple teams to the finals and many fans wanted fired. They got a few bounces and played hard and here they are.

05/28/2018 - 11:42pm Yeah there is a reason the

Yeah there is a reason the NHL has already said they wouldn't do it like that again. Vegas got gifted a team that was at the very worst going to be average. They've gotten some suprise seasons and that coupled with Fleury reverting back to top form and you get this season.

Its a little surpising, its not nearly the story everyone wants to make it and isn't even in the same universe as Leicester winning the premier league.

05/28/2018 - 11:35pm Just embarrasing refs. And

Just embarrasing refs. And hockey really is so much blind luck. Yeah it makes things exciting but it really is the game that feels the least decided by skill in sports.

05/28/2018 - 11:10pm Vegas should spend more money

Vegas should spend more money fixing their shit ice.

I don't get why people are so surprised by Vegas being good, the NHL did them a ton of favors. Yeah a few guys have had surprising years but its mostly Fleury being really good, which isn't actually shocking and the fact that they have less drop off on their 3rd and 4th lines than any other team in the nhl.

Fuck the little brown jug, I’d much rather play Wisconsin or Nebraska or even northwestern

05/25/2018 - 2:48pm When someone says the key to

When someone says the key to making money they don't mean to live a subsistence lifestyle where any sort of setback like medical or a car breaking down puts in you in a choice between paying your gas bill and rent.

05/25/2018 - 2:44pm Well no my point is that a

Well no my point is that a Michigan degrees value is specifically tied to it being recognized as prestigious and the connections with people you make. The education you got at Minnesota is the same but I gaurantee you the statistics will say the average Ross graduate makes more. Using your personal experience of making more money than your friends means nothing.  In fact I looked it up, an MBA from Ross in 2015 had an average starting salary of $118,274, for Carlson it was $102,322.

I also disagree that total salary is the pure definition of success. There are a million different reasons someone could choose a job that pays them less. They value doing that job more because it means more to them, they value a lack of travel or less work hours, they value a shorter commute or would prefer to live in a rural area of a top 10 metro area, etc. Almost every single person I work with in the non-profit world has turned down higher paying jobs, I know I have. At my previous job there were 4 Harvard grads, 3 yale law grads, etcs. They all could be making more money if they so chose.

The ranking of your school has a massive impact on your expected income. Ten years after college the top 10% of all college graduates earned $68,000. However if you limit that to the top 40 schools (where Michigan falls but for example UC Davis does not) the salary jumps $157,000, for the top 10 its $220,000 and for the #1 Harvard its $250,000. Jumps in rankings have massive impacts on salary despite little to no change in actual education received because prestige is what matters, not education received.…

05/25/2018 - 2:29pm This is just a factually

This is just a factually innacurate statement but ok.

05/25/2018 - 1:40pm A history degree is the

A history degree is the second most common degree behind business for the top 100 richest people in the us. It’s an incredibly valuable degree that can help you in fields ranging from business to foreign affairs. There is an increasing acknowledgment that to truly develop economic models an understanding of sociology is important. History is a major thing to understand to better deal with public health issues. I know plenty of Michigan history degree majors that had no problem with getting a job. With my liberal arts undergrad degree I still got offers from the big management consulting firms before deciding to stay in the non profit world. Don’t confuse an inability to market yourself with a weakness in the value of the degree.

One thing Michigan Lsa could certainly do better is to support students learning how to market their degrees and experience and it’s something the business school does incredibly well.
