Thanks, good catch. BU and Princeton are now switched above.

Tolstoy's got nothin' on me. (But seriously, thank you.)

This came up on MGoSlack. We combed through the record book (just the past few seasons) and found a 24-goal weekend against OSU in January 2016. I went back and looked and I split that into two posts, so this would technically be the longest.

02/21/2018 - 9:27am I was thinking the same thing

I was thinking the same thing for a while. Felt a whole lotta relief when I found that Friday's highlight package had all but one goal.

02/18/2018 - 9:34pm Good call. It's there now.

Good call. It's there now.

That's my fault too. I thought a sweep might pull them up the rankings enough that they wouldn't have an impact on M.

Bell's and Founders are great and all that but Right Brain might be my favorite MI brewery. Mangalista Pig Porter is unlike any other beer I've ever tried.

12/13/2017 - 4:11pm Thanks, I appreciate it.

Thanks, I appreciate it. There's one more: the excellent Jeremy Dewar, author of The Entry Level Contract, points out that you should replace "Lewandowski" with "Hirose" when you read through State's first goal. I'd make these changes but got an error when I tried and if I try the other editing platform it'll break the GIFs.

I think he's making a generalization. Chase has always picked his words very, very carefully. It would be very out of character for him to casually bash part of the staff while praising others.

Thanks for reading. The next one is already in the works.

Much appreciated. I enjoy writing analysis posts and going to pressers and all that, but there's nothing I like better than writing a profile.

11/17/2017 - 9:55pm Really appreciate that.

Really appreciate that. Thanks for reading and commenting.

11/17/2017 - 9:54pm Thank you!

Thank you! But wait, are you trying to tell me something about presser transcripts?

11/17/2017 - 1:28pm Yeah, stick to music, Louis.

Yeah, stick to music, Louis. (Actually this is probably the worst "After THE JUMP:" I've ever left in and published and I'm sorry, I have failed you all. I wrote it in the middle of the night, though, so there's that.)

He was answering a question and just sort of staring one direction. Banter, that's all.

11/09/2017 - 4:52pm No problem. I appreciate the

No problem. I appreciate the conversation. I know there haven't been as many schematic questions as people might like but that's in response to a number of things, including how I read the room and who we're talking to. Just trying to pick my spots.

And as for the question about what they're seeing on film, I like to see where a coach goes with that. Do they talk about a particular player? Do they list a position group or two that caught their attention? Is it just platitudes? It doesn't always work, but it can give a bit of insight into what's on their mind in the middle of game prep. That said, I've tried it a few times now and at this point I feel like it's time to go back to the drawing board (or, in this case, my google doc with question ideas).

11/09/2017 - 2:20pm I like your second question

I like your second question and think it might get an answer framing it that way, as a question about the long-term direction the run game. That's a good question for the spring, too.

The thing about the first question is I really do understand why you want that asked and answered, but trust me, the coaching staff views that as giving away an unnecessary advantage to the opponent. Harbaugh's response to questions like those is always along the lines of "we like the opponent to think everything is on the table."

11/09/2017 - 10:26am I didn't ask about going away

I didn't ask about going away from zone to more gap blocked runs because we know the answer: they stopped calling the stuff that wasn't working and went with what was.

10/27/2017 - 3:39pm No field goals in this one,

No field goals in this one, but I do have charts for them. Will focus on them as needed (i.e. last week's block).

As for PATs, I figured anything worth discussing would go in the section below the charts. Didn't think there was anything to talk about with the Nordin one because I didn't see anything on film; Partridge said he got emotional and then his foot hit the ground before the ball.

He's playing off one of Walter's lines.

Should be Anchor and End. Changing to strong-side end and weak-side end for the sake of clarity.

10/13/2017 - 7:21pm He could probably be a

He could probably be a receiver. He played a lot of receiver (albeit on the outside) in HS and was excellent. IIRC some people liked him even better as a receiver than as a CB.

As for who's faster, I'd say DPJ but it's close.

10/13/2017 - 7:19pm Good catch, it should indeed

Good catch, it should indeed be O33. Corrected above.

10/11/2017 - 9:43pm I had to go back over the

I had to go back over the film a couple times but it was Crawford in the first half against Purdue and Thomas since (with Hawkins remaining the other option). Weird thing to me is Purdue's first-half kickoffs were unreturnable bombs and yet.

10/11/2017 - 4:45pm Thanks for reading, I

Thanks for reading, I appreciate it. DFW is David Foster Wallace. If you're interested in trying out his work, I recommend A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again. It's a collection of some of his essays, and though his essays aren't short, they're probably a better jumping-in point than something gargantuan like Infinite Jest.

10/10/2017 - 11:40pm Thank you! Starting to plan

Thank you! Starting to plan the next set of hockey pieces now that this one has been published.

10/10/2017 - 11:33pm Came up with the title around

Came up with the title around 2:30 this morning. As Ace can attest, this thing was very creatively titled "Mel Pearson Profile" for way, way longer than I had hoped. No DFW reading requirement during MGoOnboarding; I think we were all fans of his work before we worked here, so it just comes naturally.

10/10/2017 - 7:11pm Absolutely. They're very

Absolutely. They're very focused on keeping their cards close, especially this season. My general rule of thumb is if I can pick it out on film it's not a big deal to talk about it, but anything beyond that should probably be removed.

They certainly were. At least three guys were short of the sticks on punts from outside their own 10. Cool to see, though, that they were able to set up to defend with proper zones.

09/29/2017 - 1:36pm He's done a really nice job

He's done a really nice job the last two games clearing guys out otherwise but this was obviously much tighter quarters with a guy at his back.

09/19/2017 - 10:21pm Big Jon is an incredible guy

Big Jon is an incredible guy and one of the nicest people I've come across. I asked for 30 minutes of his time to interview him for the '97 M-OSU oral history I did for HTTV and we talked for 2.5 hours. I could listen to his stories all day and never get tired of them. Love running into him at Schembechler.

The blank line is my mistake. Meant to put "see discussion" there because I knew it was going to be a focal point in the post-chart portion.

I really like your idea for handling yards gained or lost by the punter. What you laid out makes a lot of sense.

Fixing the place up was really important to Red. He spoke at length about that when I talked to him; what you guys did moved the environment of the rink in the direction Red wanted. Really cool to read the comments and see how many people here were involved in creating Yost's atmosphere in and around the era I'm focusing on.

It's surprsingly difficult to find a good shot of the student section from the '90s. Went with this one because of the clarity of the photo, plus I felt like it embodied what was discussed in the post. (Also, I'm saving one of the good interior shots of Yost that I found from that decade for Part 3.)

First of all, welcome to the sport. I think you'll love it. Always cool to see others get interested in college hockey thanks to Michigan.

As for point 5, I've found this sheet to be helpful. You can get basic stats on a player by clicking on their name, and if you're really interested I'd say google a guy's name from the list and see if you can find scouting reports.

05/04/2017 - 2:56pm Feinstein's A Season on the

Feinstein's A Season on the Brink is an interesting profile of Bobby Knight, so if you're into character studies I'd check it out. Been on a bit of a Michael Jordan kick recently and I'd recommend both Roland Lazenby's Michael Jordan: The Life and David Halberstam's Playing for Keeps. (That being said, the best thing ever written about Jordan is probably Wright Thompson's "Michael Jordan Has Not Left the Building.") I've also heard that Halberstam's The Breaks of the Game is excellent. AJ Liebling's The Sweet Science is another one I've heard great things about that is on my wish list.

04/27/2017 - 12:10pm Your question is one that I

Your question is one that I was asking myself earlier this week. I don't know his systems well enough to speak on them with any expertise, so I figured I'd dig in and do the research and that'll either be a set of offseason posts or the bulk of the season preview. One way or another, a systems analysis is going to happen.

04/27/2017 - 11:37am I'm leaning toward the

I'm leaning toward the system. You're certainly right about breaking out of their own zone. That had been a problem for at least the last three seasons and never got better despite personnel changes, which is why I think it was an inherent flaw in what they ran. Also, completely agree that the Tech uniforms are great.
