I've probably missed this at some point but what is stopping, say, mgoblog from raising a bunch of money from its readers and signing athletes to be spokespeople for the site?
What's changed is that these are potentially 10s of millions of dollars decisions now. 50 years ago, the money paid to a top college football athlete wasn't that much more than a "regular" job. The contracts and endorsements are getting bigger every year so the incentive to play in a game that best case won't change that number and worst case can significantly impact that number or limit your ability to get a 2nd contract in a few years is basically none. It's being presented to college kids by agents and their families as "You can almost certainly obtain generational wealth" or "You can risk that and your previous 20 years of playing to get to this point by playing in a 'meaningless' game".
I don't like it as a fan, but I certainly understand and won't hold it against any player that chooses takes the long-term value approach in an inherently violent and brutal sporting career.
Having a case of COVID-19 is no joke not to mention the related myocarditis potential and the potential long-term effects of reduced respiratory function.
I propose the goal is isolate and mask as much as possible to reduce the potential of spreading a deadly and highly contagious virus that we don't have a cure for or can easily test at large scale. Professional sports bubbles can work because they are able to effectively isolate and test everyday with teams in a single location without traveling. Doing that just for the 65 power 5 teams of over a hundred people plus the support staff to pull it all off is an incredibly high cost to pay. The 15,000 tests a day you need for this alone is over 2% of daily testing capacity in the entire United States (~700,000/day). Just do the math, none of this makes financial sense for football let alone the increased health risks to players. Basketball is about 1/10th of the complexity and even that is not likely to happen unless there are drastic (and proven) changes to the ability to test.
There is accountability in that they will now give him 2-3 more articles to double-down on these rankings before doing it all over again for the final four with even more fanfare. It's about entertainment and attention rather than knowledge. If people are talking about something because its wrong then at least they are talking about it! More wrong == MOAR TALKY. It's basically how Stephan A Smith, Skip Bayless, Mel Kiper Jr., etc not only have jobs but are championed and given their own segments and shows.
Agreed -- crossing Lake Washington for your commute means you will have a really long commute. Each town/area is pretty different, I'd recommend just finding a place near your work to rent at first and seeing which city or area gives you what you want.
Tangential topic: If anyone is curious why Twitter would ever expand beyond 140 characters, this is the perfect example. That letter has a lot of sellable keywords and relevance data baked into it and posting screenshots of your Notes app is not searchable so it can't be used to serve up more relevant ads or follows or other recommendations.
Wouldn't a caching solution would be cheaper for the (relatively short) surges in traffic that the site sees? Switching to a full AWS cloud architecture with properly sized instances and auto scaling groups would be fairly expensive*, require more attention to maintain, and a little overkill for the normal traffic patterns and days. A caching layer or CDN may not give you up to millisecond accurate data or posts but it would allow the site to continue to server traffic without breaking the bank
* I say this with zero knowledge of the existing infrastructure, cost, or budget.
The first Umich game is typically the weekend before the NFL starts so we do something in that game. Favorite one from the past was "How many total yards will Denard have?".
I don't have data to back this up but in the MLS case every stadium has different field dimensions. Narrow/short fields favor defense-oriented teams while wider/longer fields are more favorable to possession-oriented teams that can spread out the field.
I don't know why this is bugging (and ever so slightly at that) but if you go from #21 to #19 in the rankings, shouldn't your change be -2? I get the relationship between "up" and + but it just feels awkward and unnatural.
Clearly this is super important and resolved immediately.

So the TL;DR here is "who knows?" and "unlikely to take the job" for everyone. Got it.
Can't remember where I heard this but I always liked:
Always felt easy to understand and follow along while balancing the need to move the ball and keeping talented kickers a factor in the game.
Should also be noted that 7 of 11 staff coaches are not white. Really good to see more representation at at the coaching level.
Wouldn't each of those examples require a 2nd win in the Big Ten Championship game to make the playoffs? So that would be 6 wins away

The playing to the advantage of the rules should never trump playing the game.
I mostly agree with you but aren't the rules by definition part of the game? Playing the game means playing to the advantage of the rules.
