Rule Britannia!

07/02/2018 - 10:54pm History lesson needed.  Ford…

History lesson needed.  Ford played on two National Championship football teams, was elected captain, and selected as an All American.  He was hardly "obscure."  Oh, and he played from 1932-1935 so you had that very wrong as well.  Getting your facts wrong severely impairs the credibility of your opinions.

06/26/2018 - 9:56am I didn't leave out Gholston,…

I didn't leave out Gholston, the Free Press did.  And my understanding is Gholston was a 4 star and McDowell and Rogers were both 5 stars, at least according to the Freep.  Gholston is a success, no doubt.  Getting to your second contract in the NFL generally means you are set for life unless you are stupid.  Kudos to him.  Michigan has its share of 5 star failures too, although McDowell and Rogers are examples of kids with with the talent to be stars who didn't have the brains or maturity to succeed in football or life.  Rogers didn't get the help he needed to overcome addiction and McDowell never acquired the maturity to manage his life.

06/26/2018 - 9:42am Loved watching Jason Avant…

Loved watching Jason Avant play.  Tough and talented.  Went hard on every play.  Smart and elusive receiver who would make the tough catch for a first down and take a hit to do it.  Great blocker too.

06/25/2018 - 11:25pm Article in the Freep said he…

Article in the Freep said he was the highest ranked recruit to go to State since Malik McDowell and then Charles Rogers before him. Some great role models there.

06/02/2018 - 9:03am 2 tenors and a soprano

1. Luciano Pavarotti.  2. Joan Sutherland. 3. Jussi Bjorling.

04/28/2018 - 2:23pm Lions drafts

I was 2 when the Lions last won the Championship. All Lions’ drafts are presumed awful because of history. Their 2 best players in the 30 years quit football rather than continue earning millions of dollars playing for the Lions. What does that tell you?

04/06/2018 - 10:58am Last ND goal was complete three man breakdown

Analysis talks about Hughes' and Lavigne's failures on the game winner but fails to mention that Ceccone just cannot get beat cleanly to the outside in that circumstance.  He got caught a few feet too far up the ice and isn't fast enough to close and make contact as the ND winger skated around him.  Thus, a clean pass to the middle where Hughes seemingly was thinking the period was going to end and then isn't strong enough to effectively tie up his man or his stick.  Lavigne appears unready or in panic mode and the puck goes through him.  Here, everyone in a position to prevent the GW goal mangled it.  If anyone had done his job on that play UM goes to OT.

It was a great year for the hockey team.  It was fun to go to Yost again and the trajectory is definitely upward.  We need some defensemen who can consistently move the puck in DI hockey; outside of Hughes we are generally slow and lack elite DI-level skills on the back end.  Lavigne needs to continue to improve, especially his rebound control and glove, and we need depth beyond 6 forwards.  Mel is on it I'm sure and I'm ready for October right now.

03/15/2018 - 9:41am rather naive

Rather naive to think individual shareholders have the power to change executive compensation.  Most public companies are effectively controlled by large investor-class shareholders, hedge-funds, pension funds, mutual funds, etc.  These groups supply many of the directors of the companies that they own and there is a revolving door back and forth between the investors and the companies.  The other source for directors is CEOs of other large publically held companies. So its like a big club at that level and there is no incentive among the directors to pay their buddies less because they will likely at some time have been or want to be a CEO or a CFO so you go along to get along.  It's a club and you take care of your fellow club members at the expense of the shareholders and public at large. At least that was my observation from being an exec at a large publically-held company

02/09/2018 - 11:06am Claims investigation

To me it makes a big difference what is being investigated.  If they are investigating whether the claimed events actually happened (to the extent that is possible given the circumstances) I have no problem with it.  So, did the girl actually see Nassar, are there witnesses who can corroborate (office personel, friends, family, etc), etc.  are legitimate issues to determine.  On the other hand, if they are simply digging up dirt about the claimants personal lives to try to discredit or embarass them, its shameful.  The line is more than a little blurry here because many of the victims are making claims about the effect of the abuse on their personal lives and have put personal events in issue in the litigation.  As a  lawyer, I hope the lawyers for MSU realize that overzealous investigation of these women will only further damage their client.

01/30/2018 - 3:30pm Placeholder

Engler is, I hope,  a placeholder meant to give some sense stability and to navigate the political storm that is largely out of the school's control at this point.  The permanent appointment is what will show whether Sparty "gets it" or not.  Absolutely cannot give the post to a alum or to an in-state political hack.  Must have someone from outside the state with no prior connections to the school.  As to Mork and Iz, I'd guess the thinking is that they will stay unless the pressure becomes overwhelming, and Engler is there to help decide what is overwhelming.   Also, likely will appoint an interim AD who will depart when a new President is named.  Can't see a scenario that Mork and Iz would survive past the new AD.

12/01/2017 - 11:01am Oh, what a mistake!

Stupid Stupid Stupid.  Pitino will not be able to stand the discovery in this case.  Louisville lawyers will have every incentive to justify the firing by documenting every single crappy thing Pitino did - and there will be lots of them.   He'll try to keep it all sealed up but UL is a public university and I would think a judge would be unlikely to enter a restrictive protective order.  If discovery proceeds, it will be quite a show.  Can't wait.

11/25/2017 - 5:08pm good riddance

I hope your "I'm out" means you go root for MSU or OSU or whoever you want.  We don't want you as a Michigan fan or on this blog.  Go away,

11/25/2017 - 5:08pm good riddance

I hope your "I'm out" means you go root for MSU or OSU or whoever you want.  We don't want you as a Michigan fan or on this blog.  Go away,

11/25/2017 - 3:32pm Refs won't call  it straight

Refs won't call  it straight until the incentive to guarantee an OSU victory is removed.  Delaney can't stand the possibility that conference will be left out playoff.  With our games against OSU being essential to having a conference rep. in the playoffs we can expect to get screwed everytime.  We may get a square shot when we are playing them even up, i.e. winner gets chance to make playoffs.  Until then, it's bend over for Delaney

11/22/2017 - 1:02pm Was there in

the first row right behind the Ohio State band on about the 10 yard line.  Looked into north end of the stadium as Woodson caught the punt, lost sight of him for a second, and then he burst out of crowd towards the near sideline.  Came around the corner and was free down the sideline.  In a second he was  running right in front of us and into the end zone.  Loudest I've ever heard Michigan Stadium for the biggest play by the best player in Michigan history.

11/18/2017 - 7:02pm Advice

Braylon don't ever take sides with anyone against the family.

11/12/2017 - 9:22pm Hockey team this year

The biggest difference between this team and the last few years' teams is effort and cohesion.  With this year's team you can see a scheme, a pattern of play, and an overall plan.  That has not been true in previous years.  Also, this team does not quit when it is down.  They are not great defensively and they are thin up front but last year's team would have lost Friday 6-1 and 7-2 on Saturday.

08/13/2017 - 11:06pm O-Line run blocking cost us both Iowa and OSU games

Both games could have been salted away with 1 first down which we were unable to get because we could not run block well enough.  Any O-line should be measure on whether or not they can run block effectively in obvious running situations.  We couldn't last year and haven't been able to for a while.  Go back and watch UM/OSU game in 86 or the Biakabatuka game in 9?  Superlative O-line performance in each game..  OSU could not stop our running game even when they knew we were running the ball.  We could have given them the play and it wouldnt have helped. Watch Wilcher's 7 yd TD in the 4th quarter in 86. No attempt to disguise a straight ahead run and he was essentially untouched into the end zone.  When we can do that again to maintain possession and run out the clock we will be back.

08/04/2017 - 6:20pm didn't plead to sexual assault

He pled to fleeing an officer and misdemeanor assault and battery.  The criminal sexual conduct charge was dropped.  So, Perry did not admit guilt on the CSC.  Won't make a difference to you because you've already condemned him but I just thought I'd clarify your incorrect factual recitation.

08/03/2017 - 11:30am Losing to Maryland at home in 2014

This was the worst I've ever felt about Michgan football.  To be beaten at home by Maryland, fergodsakes. It was obvious that the team was in complete disarray and the people in charge were not capable of leading Michigan football.   The only redeeming part was the certainty that the Hoke era would soon be over.

08/03/2017 - 11:19am Not much info here with all the redactions

Only 3%-9% readable.

07/14/2017 - 3:53pm Rules

Agree to a degree. If some of the pro leagues didn't have rules restricting entry into the league based on college eligibility.  Seems very unjust that the players' unions in some sports are allowed to restrict entry into a professional league based on a prospect's college eligibility.  Talk about collusion.

06/27/2017 - 2:23pm Georgia Tech

Georgia Tech to the Big10!  Great school academically and in a huge media market.  Lots of UM alums in Atlanta and surrounds.

06/07/2017 - 3:59pm Blackwell

So you can understand Dantoni's anger when he found out that Blackwell had known about it for some period of time and didn't tell Dontoni.

04/29/2017 - 11:54am Ortiz GS

The tragedy of that grand slam was that Phil Coke was in the bullpen and had been put on the playoff roster for one purpose -pitch to left handed hitters.  Ortiz is 2 of 19 lifetime against Coke but yet Leyland let Coke sit and Benoit pitch to Ortiz. Everyone saw the result.  The all time worst Leyland decision.  I was screaming at my TV as it happened.

04/20/2017 - 3:34pm 1976

I was a UM senior in the fall of 1976 and the 3 previous games  vs OSU had been so painful- on top of 72 and 70.  The only bright spot had been 71 at UM Stadium.  To so thoroughly thrash the Buckeyes in the second half in Columbus was just heaven.

04/13/2017 - 12:44pm Going away

The longer it goes without charges against the 3 players and the coach, the more I am convinced charges are not going to be brought.  In my opinion, this will be swept under the rug like most bad things that threaten MSU. I believe the  only reasons they are in boiling water about Nassar is that the victims are too numerous, willing to seek publicity about their allegations, and are located all over the country. Thus, the situation couldn't be contained in Ingham County.

04/12/2017 - 12:00pm Lewis' lawyer

Lewis' lawyer is John Shea a UM Law Grad who is a first-rate criminal defense lawyer.  Lewis is very well represented.  My read is that he is going to trial because he and his lawyer believe he is innocent and will be acquitted.

04/11/2017 - 2:07pm Old Yost

Whether present day Yost is still great is debatable - I wouldn't say it is, but whatever.   But, what is true is that it is not like Old Yost.  The regionals vs. N. Dakota in 98 and Denver in 2002 were the most intense sporting events I have ever been to.  (97 UM/OSU football only thing close)  For most of the game, it was so loud you could not hear people talking who were sitting right next to you.  You had to sit down between periods just to restore some sanity.   I can vividly recall  regular grown up fans (like me in my 40s then)  in end-zone seats screaming and taunting DU fans sitting in their fan section at the end of the sideline seats.  They looked like they had been dropped into some foreign universe and were trying to figure out how the hell to get back to a civilization they knew.   The chants, the noise, the band, and the intimidation of opposing fans, coaches, and players were at levels that cannot be appreciated by anyone who knows only the new Yost. Those teams, (I would say from 93-2003) inspired amazing levels of loyalty and support that turned Old Yost into an unforgettable experience.  We owe Red a lot for those memories because those were different times and the Old Yost isn't coming back, no matter how successful the team becomes going forward.

04/10/2017 - 12:31pm Trevor Pryce

Yeah, that was a bummer.  Pryce was great.  Hadn't heard it was a pipe bomb, though.  Sure it was just advanced bottle rockets?  I live on Monroe behind SQ in grad school and there was some pretty advanced aeronautical engineering going on there.  That and the 3 AM fire alarms that brought 6 fire trucks onto the street every time made it a very exciting neighborhood on Saturday nights.

04/10/2017 - 10:26am That would be Downriver

No one in the area uses South to describe their geographical relationship to the City of Detroit, except the Southland Mall, and, as a result, no one knows where Southland is.  Just shows the songwriter had no knowledge of how the locals talk.  Not a big deal but true nonetheless.

04/08/2017 - 1:04pm O-line

You are absolutely right.  Many seem to forget that the Iowa and OSU games would have been victories if we could have achieved 1 more first down in each game.  O-line has to be able to deliver 10 yds in those situations - even when everyone knows we are running.

04/05/2017 - 11:39am Andover High School

Yes it is sad the old place is gone, and the old nickname.  I guess Barons sounds too snooty.  Oh, well.  I have not been inside the new place - I'm sure it is a significant upgrade.  I was a 73 grad of Andover and have mostly fond memories of school and growing up in that area back in the day.  John was really a remarkable guy.  I saw  him only a few times after high school but to do what he was doing in terms of composing and arranging when he was in 10th grade is amazing.

04/05/2017 - 8:56am John Stout

I too went to Bloomfield Hills Andover (Go Barons!) and played in the band with John.  He was a year behind me, I think, but was already composing and arranging.  We played his arrangements in the marching band and his original compositions in the concert band.  He also played the bassoon which is a very difficult task.  He was an incredibly talented individual with a broad scope of interests beyond music.  A true genius and great guy. I am so sorry to hear of John's death and send my deepest sympathy to his family and friends.

04/03/2017 - 10:08am People can do what they want

but I've been a season ticket holder for 20 years and won't renew for another season of "we don't give a shit about hockey at Yost."  People can say 1 more year is fine all they want but its been at least 5 years too long.    Absent Hunwick's mighty-mouse routine it's been 10 years since Michigan had any chance of winning the NCAA tournament.  The program is dying and the Athletic Dept doesn't seem to care.  Yeah, what's one more year of 40th in the pairwise?    Just another year of decay to dig out from.  Love Red but he has stayed far too long and like Lloyd is now damaging the program for his own vanity.

03/30/2017 - 10:44am "Wayne Duke Take a Vote"

This was the  chant of Michigan fans at the end of Michigan's 73-67 beating of Indiana in the Big 10 Championship game in March 1974.    Michigan and Indiana were tied for 1st in the regular season at 12-2 so the Big 10 had a one game playoff in Bloomington for the NCAA spot.  A great Michigan led by Campy Russell prevailed. That team could really score- they went over 100 a couple of times and scored 111 points against Purdue at Crisler!  Heartbreaking loss to Marquette in the tourney.

03/21/2017 - 11:11am Waterman Gym

I remember running on that track as an undergrad in the early/mid seventies!  Hard on the knees with the sharp turns.  Also, students of my era will recall registration at Waterman where each department in LSA had a table in the gym and you went from table to table to register for your classes.  Old school.  One of my friends had a "Wake for Jim Waterman" just before it was torn down.  Much beer and cheap, bad wine was consumed along with "mystery punch."   Sent Jim off properly!!

01/24/2017 - 12:57pm Law and cash transactions

Well, if it's 10K or more in cash, the recipient must report it.  Also, if the transaction totals $10K but is broken down into smaller components to avoid reporting, that is a violation of Federal law as well.  Also, the recipient of any "bag payment" must report it as income.  It is not a gift because it is not made out of "detached and disinterested generousity."  Therefore, it is income to the recipeint.  Not that the IRS is likely to go after student/athletes but they are breaking the law if they receive these payments and don't report them as required.

12/02/2016 - 12:06am That is not how it should work.

The team, the team, the team.  As Bo said, no coach is more important than the team.  Red has been allowed to think that he is more important than the team, and it is costing the UM hockey program dearly.  I've been a UM hockey fan since freshman year in 1973 and i love Red and no one did more for UM hockey than he did.  But, now, and for the last 5 years or so, he is a detriment to the team and the program.  " No coach is more important than the team" applies to Red, even though we all love him and he did great things in the past.   He must retire.

11/10/2016 - 1:06pm I saw the launching of the

I saw the launching of the Fitzgerald from my dads shoulders. He was taking 8mm movie of the launch which I will watch tonight. Thanks for the reminder. I lived in Markley when the ship sank.

10/12/2016 - 11:09am Won't ever go again

Went in 1993 and 1995 won't ever go again.  93 numerous drunks in seating area harassed us mercillessly during the game.  I was in my late 30's for these games and just wanted to sit and watch and the verbal abuse and threats were scary.  A dad and his 10ish son next to us left because he tried to take his son to the men's room and the boy was pushed around in the men's room.  In 95 people threw things at us and harassed both women who were with us with crude verbal sexually oriented taunts.  Will never go back to Spartan Stadium and try to avoid EL completely for any purpose, whatsoever.

08/13/2016 - 5:04pm Perfection

The maize jersey is perfect.  Team got to wear these on Saturday night if they won on Friday night.  Now a days they wouldn't wear them much but they would be beautiful to see again.  The jerseys for next season are a complete disaster.  Much like the team looks to be.  Neg away but I'm a 20 year season ticket holder and am quite sick of the poor excuse for a team that has too often been foisted on us.  They haven't been a consistenly good team at the national level since 2003.

08/12/2016 - 5:58pm the whole game was sour

The Brazilian "fans" relentless booing of the US, Solo's comments, and Sweden's style of play left a sour taste in my mouth.  I would normally root for Sweden but both Sweden and Brazil teams can rot in hell as far as I'm concerned. Hope they both lose as quickly as possible.

07/12/2016 - 3:33pm Sleep depravity

I love sleep depravity with my GF.

06/23/2016 - 3:55pm Schmidt not on medical staff

Schmidt served as liason to the medical staff.  The medical staff does not report to any of the coaches- it reports to an Associate AD.  I think JH is more concerned about player health than most coaches in college football and doubt he wants to "push the envelope" and put a player at risk.  Even if he did, after the Morris fiasco, I doubt very much that the medical staff would be amenable to pressure.

05/24/2016 - 9:18pm Darryl Stingley

Sad watching Purdue's Darryl Stingley running past people knowing that his pro career ( and ultimately his life0 would be ended by a huge hit from Jack Tatum that resulted in a spinal cord injury and quadriplegia.

03/23/2016 - 2:11pm 1998 and 2002

The Regionals at Yost in 1998 and 2002 are 2 of the 3 most exciting sports events I have ever been.to.  Literally, Yost was so loud you could not talk to the person sitting next to when those winning goals were scored. Just absolutely crazy.

03/17/2016 - 10:41am CC Recruiting

Of course they recruit.  I have a friend whose son could go there only if the football coach wanted him.  Another friend's son was recruited for the hockey team despite the fact they live 40 miles away from the school.  Imagine that drive every day!  Trenton doesn't recruit but they run travel teams for younger kids to play on before high school so that they are coached in the Trenton system from elementary school age.

03/16/2016 - 11:03pm My eyes hurt

This is awful basketball.  We are terrible.
