MGoRadio 2.8: Turtle Power!

1 hour and 36 minutes

Cwc-1ZsUkAAuuEB

MGoRadio was recorded before a live retail audience at The Bo Store, 333 S. Main. If you haven’t checked out Rishi and Ryan’s latest venture, do so.

Special guests: We welcomed former Michigan hockey player Scott Matzka, to talk about My Turn (scottmatzka.com), ALS, and when Germans lay down in front of his bus. Plus Steve Lorenz, recruiting guru from 247sports, came on for our weekly protozoan discussion. And Matt Demorest from Homesure Lending came by for the gimmicky top five and to give away some tickets. Plus I sat in on the Turtle Preview Extravaganza.

The reason we can put out so much audio content now is it’s paid for. The show is presented by UGP & Moe's and frankly would not be happening without them; Rishi and Ryan and their people have been huge MGoBlog supporters from the start.

Our other sponsors are also key in the expanding empire: thanks to Homesure Lending, Ann Arbor Elder Law, the Residence Inn Ann Arbor Downtown, the University of Michigan Alumni Association, Deo Bookkeeping, Michigan Law Grad, Defensive Drivers Group, Tailgater Concierge, and Peak Wealth Management.

1a. Michigan State After Review

Dantonio is going to over-prepare and he did so: Michigan was –7 RPS on the first drive and even for the rest. It was a great way to attack Michigan’s 4-2-5. The refs sucked as bad or worse than we thought live—weird that this has happened two years in a row against them. Offense didn’t feel as dominant live as it was. Delano Hill was better than met the eye too.

1b. Gimmicky Top Five: What Would You Do If You Were the B1G Cheese for a Day?

starts at 10:22

We give Brian, Ace, and Matt Demorest from HomeSure Lending the reigns to the Big Ten for a day and ask what they’d do, other than cut Rutgers because obviously. One thing that rang: why isn’t the B1G treating Detroit like a major city in its footprint?

Demo stuck around to give out some free tickets and invitations to his friends, family, and client party before the Indiana game at Wolverine State Brewing. Follow him at @HomeSureLending and tweet him #MattsTickets if you want to go, and he’ll pick some winners.

2. My Turn: Michigan Hockey wsg Scott Matzka

starts at 26:00

image

Scott Matzka played for Michigan in the glory days of ’97-’01, and now runs My Turn for those like him who are going through ALS degeneration. I didn’t realize when I set this up that I was reuniting two EECS nerds so we suffered through some engineering before getting to the Hockey. He also talked about living with ALS, what he’s facing, and how we can help.

3. Across the Crooked-ish Blue Line with Steve Lorenz

starts at 39:19

The class won’t come together until we get some announcements at the big high school games. It does help that some of the teams Michigan is recruiting against are having bad seasons. Tracking who hosts is a good way to gauge who some of these guys are. J’Marick Woods took some visits for fun but he’s solid. He’s a more important prospect than we realized, will be in town with his family this weekend. Herbert is another commit Michigan is intent on holding onto. Michigan versus the Black Hole of Mississippi isn’t just a Mississippi situation, but it’s surprising Michigan got even this far with Gay. Najee Harris…when are you going to ball him Steve?

[around 0:57 there’s a cutout]

The college baseball season fits into the spring semester, which lets the athletes be able to take classes in the summer and fall without a ton of interruption and stay on track to graduate. It has the lower scholarship limit so that schools outside of the southeast and sun belt who don't have a really popular team can afford to compete without having to totally subsidize.

This insistence that college baseball is somehow broken because Northern schools are shitty at it is really weird and tantamount to saying college hockey will always be screwed unless the University of Miami is a powerhouse at it.

That's a weird take. College baseball season has shifted dramatically back into winter semester and the reason is the southern teams realized they could undermine the traditional powers by doing so. Big Ten programs have money and fans to support baseball like a major sport, and are only relegated to mid major status recently because they can't play home games until the season is almost over. The Sun Belt teams aren't the Big Ten's concern. And from a student's perspective, summer, when there are far fewer classes and profs available, is the best time to play.

Other than the horse crap retaliation call for being punched, he had a damn good game.  He saved their bacon on at least two plays where the defense completely broke down and was one of the few in the back 7 to tackle well all afternoon.  Coverage was solid as well.

You should have Seth on more often; he's got good analysis. Plus, I like how you made him memorize Brown's playbook so none of us have to.

very encouraging, if not mindblowingly optimistic on how many top recruits are seriously considering Michigan.  Going to be very exciting to see how Michigan finishes up with this class.  Looking for an amazing finish based on his report.
