MGoPodcast 6.11: Destination Moon
1 hour.
[Bryan Fuller]
THE GAME
Wow.
TOP FIVE MOST RIDICULOUS GAMES OF THE HOKE ERA
Wide divergence at the bottom. Not so much at the top.
COACH/AD CHATTER
Why I'm skeptical about all timelines, and why I can't say so for certain.
TALKING BIG TEN WITH JAMIEMAC
Penn State-Indiana! Feel the BIG TEN! Also: OSU-MSU and vaguely competitive Purdue-Wisconsin. Basketball talk works its way in at the end.
MUSIC
In tribute to the most ridiculous game ever, songs from the most ridiculous band ever.
"Across 110th Street"
"Cowtown," They Might Be Giants
"Youth Culture Killed My Dog," They Might Be Giants
"Destination Moon," They Might Be Giants

Quick Lane Bowl at Ford Field - and that's only "if" they beat Maryland
sounds like a fitting end (a/o punch line) to the 'Hoke era'

Across 110th street is back! Wheee! You guys scared the hell out of me last week.
November 10th, 2014 at 3:18 PM ^
Good call with the music. David Bowie's "Space Oddity" would have also been acceptable here.

Great song choices! Love TMBG.

Great call!

I can't decide if I'm pleasantly surprised or WHY U NOT PLAY TMBG BEFORE

about 2012 michigan st game for ridiculous hoke games.
November 10th, 2014 at 5:23 PM ^
to where the advanced stats have them: #35 in defensive FEI. Our schedule has been too weak, the pace too slow.
November 10th, 2014 at 6:04 PM ^
Michigan State's defense: #42 F/+, #57 FEI, #16 S&P+. Michigan State is #108 in the country in giving up explosive drives and #1 in methodical drives.
And Virginia Tech's defense continues to rate highly (#5 F/+, #3 FEI,, #8 S&P+). I am guessing the Ohio State game factors in significantly for both of those results.
Michigan's defense, as you would expect, is #3 in the country in explosive drives.

all vote as the top 5 most ridiculous games in Hoke era? Clearly this is one of them but what other games...

5. 2012 @Notre Dame: The drive chart for this game is just legendary.

4. 2013 Akron: For many of the reasons Ace listed.
3. 2012 Sugar Bowl: Brian and Ace covered most of this. We won with 184 yards of total offense.
2. 2014 @Northwestern: M00N forever.
1. 2013 @PSU: I still can't believe this game went 4OT. Brian and Ace left out how the game ended up in OT with the ridiculous game-tying drive at the end of regulation capped by 35 yard prayer to Allen Robinson.

Now, Andy did you hear about this one?
Tell me, are you locked in the punch?
Andy are you goofing on Elvis?
Hey, baby,
Are we losing touch?
November 10th, 2014 at 6:42 PM ^
I'm surprised that Brian didn't include TMBG's "Experimental Film" -- it comes complete with a Homestar Runner music video, and to be honest the whole game had a surreal art-house film quality to it. Plus the lyrics perfectly described the ending:
I already know the ending, it's the part that makes your face implode
I don't know what makes your face implode but that's the way the movie ends
Can anyone improve on that? I don't think so.

Seth is now forever Jerry Gergich in my mind.
November 10th, 2014 at 8:06 PM ^
Insta-ban.
No, no, and fuck no.
My Penn State odyssey indeed sucked nearly as much as that effin' game but we also had a tailgate with the PSU bloggers that day which I had to track back to from the opposite side of the erector set, and once I got there I had to down a couple of shots because WHY DO I HAVE TO EXPLAIN THIS, while Brian and his friends launched directly from the Michigan section (ie correct side of the building).
For the record, Brian's friend parked right by the hospital (northeast) and I'd walked up that northwest road before calling them to say "just go; I'll catch a ride with the photographers." Campus is one way, but every other direction from Beaver Stadium is complete fucking wilderness.
In conclusion the Jerry thing dies NOW.
And no Brian, you are not getting a Hokepoints analyzing which game was worse between M00N and Penn State-Indiana. In fact I think I will write one tomorrow on the very subject you wanted to to write when you started the blog, but were always too pissed off about it to do so...
Not Jerry.

I was laughing constantly and looping the revelation that PSU-Indiana had TWENTY PUNTS with nothing going beyond either 20-yard line. I hate to say it but the reality is, you guys have your best moments when you suffer.
November 10th, 2014 at 7:09 PM ^
The 2011 Northwestern game was in Evanston, won by Michign 42-24. The 2012 game was the one with the pass tipped to Roundtree.

But the 2012 ND game was patently ridiculous. You also had the Vincent Smith interception to boot.
If you wanted to go off the They Might Be Giants motif, Child of the Moon, a trippy song by the Stones could have worked.
November 10th, 2014 at 9:38 PM ^
Cheerleader by St. Vincent would be fitting
November 10th, 2014 at 11:16 PM ^
FWIW the absurd Northwestern Roundtree game was 2012, not 2011 leading to the Sugar Bowl. I only know this because it is one of only two games I have attended since graduation.
November 11th, 2014 at 7:53 AM ^
What was the least ridiculous game of the Hoke era? 2011 Nebraska? Even that one still had a goofy Denard pick on a screen pass attempt, but I think that the Nebraska D just made a good play.
November 11th, 2014 at 12:06 PM ^
Did anyone notice that ESPN listed Drake Johnson as an 'Imapct Player' at the start of the game? That's when I began laughing.
November 11th, 2014 at 9:38 PM ^
According to PSU ( and Indiana's ) site, there were 7 punts that finished inside the 20 and 2 for TBacks.

Still... 20 punts :)
