This is NOT good for us.  Why?  I will tell you.

If we are choosing M, with all of the coaching uncertainty, why make the announcement now when he has said a few times that he would be announcing in January?

This is even more so since the uncertaintly around M is likely to be cleared up within a week or so.  If the kid were inclined to pick M, wouldn't he wait the few remaining days to see who he might be playing for?

he's decided he wants Michigan regardless of who's the coach or he's decided on somewhere else and the coaching situation is irrelevant.   Anything beyond that is speculation -- I'd be shocked if he had inside information on DB's decision.

As you noted, either he has decided that he wants Michigan regardless OR he has decided he is going somewhere else, so our CC issue is irrelevant.  I guess to me logic dictates the latter.   If he were inclined towards Michigan, wouldn't it make sense for him to wait to see who the coach is going to be?

You're making quite a leap there.  It's very possible that, since he grew up a UM fan and has been to the campus a number of times, has decided that he wants to play football at UM, no matter the coach.  Zettel knows that M's coach next fall will either be JH or RR, and it's very possible that he's decided that he would like to play for either of them.  Maybe he's done some research on JH's defensive staff (DC of the year) and thinks that he will like that just as much as playing for RR and his staff.

Maybe he's realized that the chance of any of the schools he's considering having a coaching change over the next four years is pretty high, so he should pick the school and program he likes the best.  M has led for him the whole way, if he was worried about our coach, he's wait a week.  This tells me he's not, and I can't imagine he goes from "M leads" to "no matter who M's coach is, they're out."

agree with your logic, but RR's been on fire in recruiting lately. Maybe it dawned on Zettel that if MSU can have their best season in 50 years and still get shut out of the BCS, it's just not easy being green. Not confident or anything, but who knows what the early decision means.

I don't think that is really true normally. This year is a special case due to the CC. It is weighing heavy in the recruits minds, IME. If it were a LC to JH transition I don't think it would be as big deal, but this is a possible complete overhaul (again) of offensive strategy and definite complete overhaul of defensive leadership (IME). I don't see how that can't make recruits think twice in all honesty, but I guess some people really enjoy uncertainty and instability in their lives.  It's not for me, but I am a creature of habit.

I was under the impression he was holding off, to see how things shake up with the coaching situation.  The Debbie Downer in me has me a bit nervous that he moved this up.  I wont jump until I hear what Tom VH has to say on this.

MSU is in the mix, with Iowa too.

He recently visited (IIRC) Iowa and PSU and has been to both UM and MSU multiple times.

The pre-January decision has me half-concerned that someone besides UM made a very big impact on him the last couple months; of course, the other half has me thinking that it's always been UM and it's time to disclose the silent-commit.

I"m half confused, half nervous, halft anxious, and half excited.

I stopped worrying about recruits a few years ago so I am not going to freak out if Zettel goes elsewhere, but your point about this showing up on an MSU board first coupled with this being a change in his previous stance of waiting until after the New Year (presumably to see who the coach would be at UM) certainly leads me to think he will announce for MSU.

Ugh...

almost everything I read said Zettel was interested in how the coaching evaluation / change fell out. Makes me wonder if he wants to forsake the potential better fit for a more stable situation. I guess you could look at this positively and say he believes RR will be back, or that with either RR or JH he'd fit in, but I'm not feeling good about this.

For a guy who supposedly grew up a strong Michigan fan, the fact that he hasn't committed by now after more than a few visits has me thinking he'll go elsewhere. My biggest concern is that he's going Sparty; if he's as good as many think he is, facing him every year is going to hurt.

In the interest of full disclosure, my thoughts about Zettel are the same that I had about Will Campbell; i.e., if he really wanted to attend UM, why is he delaying things? I don't understand why the decision-making process takes so long, but then I'm not an athletically-gifted 18-yr-old with some of the nation's foremost institutions panting after me, either.

I hope he doesn't have a GF who's going up to EL.
