Your craziest/worst experience at a sporting event?

Just about to leave when Artest gets hit with the beer. Enjoyed the fun first hand. Then watched it for hours at the bar.

I bought an 8th row seat from an older guy on the street for Michigan vs Wiscy when Glen Rice scored 41, matching his uni number.  He said he wasn't a scalper, and my ticket was next to his.  He knew a lot about basketball and everyone who had ever played PSL ball.  I asked him if he was a coach, and he said, "I help Coach Watson sometimes."

I spent years trying to figure out who he was.  When the Ed Martin scandal broke, I saw his face looking at me from the newspaper.  I am still trying to figure out how much "help" he gave to Perry Watson.

He may have buried Michigan basketball for years, but he sure knew the game and sure knew Detroit players.

For my birthday my parents took me to the Pistons vs Nets game 5 of the 2004 NBA Playoffs, which was the crazy triple overtime game that featured the Chauncey Billups halfcourt jumper. Man that stadium was crazy. I remember there were three people in front of us that left with a few minutes left in the fourth quarter. I was laughing when they all scrambled back into their seats in the second OT.

Worst was this past weekend. I was at the Spartan game visiting my best friend whose in law school there. Needless to say being a Wolverine fan when they kept showing the Michigan score on the scoreboard was not a pleasant experience. Anyway funny story, I was on the phone getting updates on the final goal line stand when a guy next to me on his smartphone started jumping up in down when we won. Apparently he was another Wolverine fan in a similar predicament. We then hugged right in the middle of the concourse.

OSU, 1997 at the Big House. Our first OSU game ever.   My wife and I were walking down 7th towards Stadium, and there was a nice-looking group of couples tailgaiting. All were decked out in buckeye gear, but feeling good about things and with a fresh layer of snow,  I said "good morning, great day for a football game" and was greeted with a chorus of "fuck you" and "eat my ass you faggot" and "fuck you I hope you get cancer and die". And that was even before the men in the group chimed in. 

We were all like "whoa".  

So, with that setting the table we were waiting at Stadium and Main to cross the intersection, from PiHi to the stadium. The Ann Arbor mounted police whistled and waved everyone to cross, and as we started some dickhole in OSU gear grabbed my wife by the hips and started dry humping her. I realized what was happening and turned to push him, but before I did a mounted cop had already dismounted, and slammed the guys' face into the pavement.  It looked like a tomato blew up, and he was cuffed and dragged to his feet before we made it across.  We were speechless.

Beating OSU that day was incredibly special. 

...but I used to sit in the bleachers at a lot of games at the old Tiger Stadium & the Silverdome.  Plenty of shenanigans in both places.  In fact, generally more entertaining than the mediocre teams on the field.  I was always perplexed about why someone would buy the expensive seats to get a good view of a shitty game when all the entertaining shit was happening in the cheap seats.

I was almost eight years old at the time and it messed me up some.

Dad worked with Oregon WR Demetrius Williams so we got 50yd line players family seats for Michigan at Oregon. We score first, think it was a blocked FG my dads screaming yes in the Oregon family section. My dads 6'3" 260 big guy right? well I forget whos dad it was but somoan and probably 6' 350lbs guy to rows down looks up and my dad stops lol. Worst experience also because we lost, sitting in Michigan clothes in the Oregon family section, long walk out of there.

Worst...last week against Akron...and I was at " The Horror"

Basically, older guy behind me was mouthing off every Michigan player and play with really crappy, inappropriate and racist comments. Also making fun of players, over-pronouncing black players' names " Ray - Mon" etc. It was crazy, inappropriate and offensive. Guy is a regular as well...holds seasons.

By the 4th I could take no more and politely, but firmly, asked him to STFU with that crap. Guy was demanding they "put in the Lefty" by that point. It's disappointing that there is a segment of the fan base that shit talks players and is inappropriate like that Jackass. Funny, but he was damn happy with DG and quiet during the ND game.

I went to a Tigers game about 10 years ago and sat on the 1st base line behind the opposing dugout - in this instance the Yankees. Some tools in front of us were getting plastered and heckling the players. Eventually Derek Jeter and one of these guys got into a shouting match that lasted about a minute. Really surreal to see a pro athlete actually responding to something like that.

Illinois, 2000. The first (and last) time the MMB goes to Chambana.

1. Watched a duder try to cross thru the drumline -- he entered wearing sunglasses and talking on his Startac. He exited with bloody knuckles, no phone, no sunglasses.

2. Walking to the restroom with two others, an 18 year-old coed (by herself) starts cussing us out. In the concourse. 

3. Duder jumps out of the stands after pregame and attempts to pick a fight with an MMB member -- a 6-foot, 255 pound MMB member. Ended well.

4. Yes, you may try to tip our buses over and attempt to sucker punch one of our grad staff, but remember both are bigger than you.

5. ...an apology letter from Illinois' Chancellor. Shit. Penn State kids threw rocks at us and we didn't get one of those!

Was at Akron U's final game at the Rubber Bowl. Started out great while on the way there I had a Marco's pizza guy get out of his car and start yelling at me because he came out of a parking lot and almost hit me when I had the right of way. Called his store and proceeded to yell at the manager for 15 minutes.

Anyway back to the game I'm wearing my Michigan hat as I always do. Sitting there with my dad, a family friend, and my stepson who's maybe 14 at the time. These guys in front of us continually turn around to shout fuck Michigan and sing ad nauseum the "we don't give a damn song". My dad gets pissed tells them to pay attention to the game. They get louder and more abusive. I casually got up and went to the police officer near our section and explained the situation to him. He tells me he had noticed it already and was keeping an eye on things an that he's a Michigan fan as well. So he says he'll watch closer and tells me not to worry. So I go back an sit down and they start back into their litany of nonsense. The cop shows up with another cop and two Akron U ushers and ceremoniously escorted douchebag 1 and 2 out of the stadium.

Felt very rewarding.

2008 Northwestern.  Mostly because I didn't have socks.  I should get like an oakleaf cluster on my fandom endurance badge.

I almost got in a drunk-fight with some MSU kids my senior year in 2010, but I could feel my feet.

I went to the Nebraska game in Lincoln last year and it was like an episode of the Twilight Zone. To recap: 1) Neb fans are all SUPER nice. To the point of being creepy. We had one or two groups talk shit to us the entire time, while on the other end I must've shook hands with 20 of their fans and was bought beers post game by a nice group of N supporters. 2) Their campus is dreadful. I was expecting good to OK quality but it was Missouri Valley quality. 3) The game itself. Denard nerve damage. Bellomy brain damage. 4) The post game... we wound up at a strip club which I can only describe as 'dreadful' which was only two blocks from our $500/night hotel. We take a stripper back to the hotel. We have to switch rooms after she threatens to have a man (who I can only assume is her boyfriend-pimp) 'bring her gun'. TWILIGHT ZONE'D

I was at a Cubs game and I caught a foul ball down the left field line by leaning over the railing, and for some reason everyone got mad at me.  Im not sure what was up with that....

Funniest:  Hockey games at Yost vs Northern Michigan between 01-03. NMU had a captain named Cockburn. IRL it's pronounced co-burn, but obviously that wasn't how we were chanting it. Every minute he was on the ice, every shift, nothing but "COCK-BURN, COCK-BURN" echoing throughout Yost. Best was there was a fight incident, so the zebras cleared the ice, except for the team captains. Cockburn was a C for NMU, so we were chanting his name throughout the entire delay of game.

Worst: @ Illinois in 2009. I had just traveled to the Penn State game at the big house the week before, so I was coming off of that disappointing loss, but was optimistic that we would be bowl eligible by the end of the day. We were in the 2nd row, on the 50. Sitting immediately to our left was Juice WIlliams' entire family. Sitting directly behind us was the Illinois recruits on visits. The first half went well, but you all know how the 2nd half went. That was the worst loss I'd ever been to in person for UM.

Closest to a fight: Cold War @ MSU in 2001. Between the 2nd and 3rd periods there was a group of us inside the concourse singing the Victors at the top of our lungs. Suddenly, a very white trashy MSU fan (jean jacket, mullett, booze on breath) comes elbowing through our group, shoving people. Notably, he only made physical contact with the girls in the group, not the guys. One of the girls knocked his hat off his head and a game of keep-away began. He wound up to take a swing at the girl holding his hat, and I had a feeling a massive fight was going to break out if he connected, because he would've been promptly jumped by the guys in our group, and then we in turn would probably get jumped by all the Sparties around us. Suddenly, a massive MSU fan (6'6", 300, had to be a former player) grabs Mr. Drunk White Trash and throws him against the wall. He berates that guy for going to hit a girl, and tells him to get lost, and that he is a disgrace to MSU. Big guy then apologizes to us for Drunk guy's behavior. Probably the only nice MSU fan I'd ever met at a game.

I once saw a tiger attack the short stop at an Angels game.

I went to visit a friend in Philly (who is actually a fan of all the Pittsburgh teams) and we went to Citizens Bank Park to watch the Giants vs Phillies in Bonds last year. So my buddy, a lifelong Pirates and Bonds fan wore his Bonds Giants jersey. Holy crap, what a mistake. A whole row of drunks kept heckling us all game. Two of the more clever assholes kept tapping on their arms (like shooting up) and saying "Baaaarrry!" They did this maybe 100 times an inning. As the game went and the beer flowed, they began getting personal and a little creepy. A group of guys in our row assured us that they were not going to let them do anything, though one guy mentioned he didn't know if he could help me since I was wearing a Michigan shirt. It got so bad that a police officer stood at the end of our row for an inning and a half. Another officer went down to warn the drunks, but they just heckled him too. The officer by our seats advised us to leave early or wait a while before leaving. Totally ridiculous. It was a pretty crazy experience.

The strangest thing I ever had happen was getting cussed out by an old woman at a Portland Trail Blazers game. I was driving from my uncle's house in Seattle to a friend's house in LA and stopped to take in the game alone. At halftime, I moved down to a better seat. Everyone in my new row won three free packages of lunch meat. This really upset the elderly lady behind me who hurled insults at me for moving into her section and accepting the free meat. It was a bizarre evening.

A day that shall live in infamy, until it got better.  I'm at a Pistons game, way the hell up in the nosebleeds, and this Pacers fan in the row behind us is just non-stop the whole-freaking-game with the stupidest, most annoying, loud, profane trash talk I've ever heard, all made much worse by the lousy performance by the Pistons.  His trash talk doesn't let up even as the game devolves into garbage time, and Ben Wallace shoves Ron Artest in the dying moments of the game... 

And yeah, then Malice at the Palace happened.  And as soon as Artest ran into the stands after that fan, it was obvious to everyone that the Pacers season was fucked, including the idiot behind me.  At that point, he starts wailing about how stupid his own team is... wish I could have been there after the suspensions were handed down.  It made everything worth it.

 

Getting tear gassed by AAPD on South U. That was fun. Asshole domer fans in their pickup trucks talking shit on South U did not end well for anyone.

I remember UCLA in A^2 in 1996 (I had graduated a year prior)...UCLA fan behind my dad talking shit...then my dad (6'8" 275) stood up.

Dude ripped dad's shirt. My dad picked the dude up and (no joke) lifted the guy over his head and delivered him to the usher to be removed from the stadium.
