Seventeen years later, Manning and Woodson—both 38 years old—are still competing against each other in the NFL, where the average age is 26. But it has long been clear which of them turned out to be the superior player. It’s Woodson.

Nice to see the case for Woodson made so pointedly.

Ex-teammates give each other good-natured shit.  This is an indication of camaraderie: not an idication of "bitterness," etc...

To change the subject a bit, there is one thing that nobody mentions in the Manning vs Woodson "debate:" it was Manning choking like a dog against Nebraska that gave Nebraska their half of the National Championship.  It was Manning's job to beat Nebraska; he lost 42-17.

UT fans can bitch all they want, but their pathetic performance in the Orange Bowl cost Michigan their rightful "other half" of the National Championship.

And special teams. Maybe his clutch factor can rub off on the players in big moments.

We haven't had a memorable punt return for TD against OSU in forever. In the 90s we had 2 ...

Now I'm sad again :(

Brady understands the press doesn't take things in context.

Of course Woodson is still ticked aobut that call.  It was a horribly stupid call (rule) that probably cost him a Super Bowl ring.  I'd be ticked too.

But for a defensive back in today’s pass-happy NFL, Woodson’s longevity, versatility and consistency are so remarkable that there’s an argument to be made that he has proved to be the better player pound-for-pound.

To do what Woodson does as a defensive back in the league and do it for as long as he has truly does make him a special talent, but we all knew that he was long before this article was written, of course. I almost feel that this paragraph needs his stats and his NFL honors attached to it just to underscore the point.

to compare the 1997 HT 1 & 2 to every other 1 & 2.  I would hazard to guess that no other 1 and 2 pairing has had comprable NFL careers.

1986 was another banner year for the HT.  from the top ten, 1. Vinny Testaverde, 3. Jim Harbaugh, 4. Brian Bosworth, 7. Cornelius Bennett, 10. Chris Spielman (and 6th in 1987).

I love the Woodson quote:

"Woodson said when the rule change was announced last year, “this [10]-game playoff streak that Tom Brady has? It never happened. Tom Brady owes me his house. I’m the reason why he’s married to who he’s married to. I’m a reason for a lot of that. Everything.”

To me he doesn't sound bitter or anything, this fits with so many other Woodson quotes. Woodson is full of swagger, he's a champion who bets on himself and takes responsibility.

The comparison is rather pointless - apples and oranges. Both have excelled in the NFL and will be heading to Canton. I did take great delight in 1997 when Woodson won the Heisman. Manning was the overwhelming favorite going into the season. Woodson delivered many key performances and "stole" the award from Manning.

Randy Moss was a Heisman Finalist that year to.  Remember when he wore shades at the ceremony, lol.  Ryan Leaf was the fourth.

Other than Ryan Leaf, 1997...may have been the greatest Finalist list in history, considering what Woodson, Manning and Moss accomplished in their NFL careers.

Tennessee, without Manning, was undefeated and won the national championship the following year.  With Tee Martin at QB.

Wikipedia summarizes that team as follows:

The Vols won their second undisputed national title, and sixth overall, after defeating Florida State in the Fiesta Bowl, the first BCS National Championship Game. The '98 Vols beat eight bowl teams, including six January bowl teams, four top ten teams, and three BCS bowl-bound teams. The 1998 Tennessee Volunteers are ranked as the #3 college football team of all time by the Billingsley Report computer ratings.

And, with Tee Martin, they beat Florida, something Peyton never accomplished.

...I wish the case that the author made for Woodson was not so hollow.

Based only on the evidence given in the article, I actually came away with the impression that Manning has had the better career.

Woodson>Manning. Both will be NFL Hall of Famers, but Woodson will go down as the best player at his position in NFL history.
