I like this article because it confirms to me what I already know

Seventeen years later, Manning and Woodson—both 38 years old—are still competing against each other in the NFL, where the average age is 26. But it has long been clear which of them turned out to be the superior player. It’s Woodson.
Nice to see the case for Woodson made so pointedly.

Makes it seem like Woodson is salty about Brady... I'm sure he still is about the tuck rule. But that quote makes it seem like he's attacking Brady, which would be odd b/c they were teammates a UM no?
December 26th, 2014 at 1:20 PM ^
Agreed. I thought Woodson had a good relationship with Brady, and the comment was made somewhat in jest. As written Woodson sounds bitter.

The only two comments there (so far) are using the last paragraph as ammunition against Woodson's character. Maybe someone who remembers their timing playing together? Or knows the quotable context of W's comment?

Ex-teammates give each other good-natured shit. This is an indication of camaraderie: not an idication of "bitterness," etc...
To change the subject a bit, there is one thing that nobody mentions in the Manning vs Woodson "debate:" it was Manning choking like a dog against Nebraska that gave Nebraska their half of the National Championship. It was Manning's job to beat Nebraska; he lost 42-17.
UT fans can bitch all they want, but their pathetic performance in the Orange Bowl cost Michigan their rightful "other half" of the National Championship.

to beat Florida...he went 0-4...
moreso than that pathetic Orange Bowl was Philip Fulmer's voting Michigan 4th in the coaches poll that year that gave Nebraska that bogus championship.
December 26th, 2014 at 2:01 PM ^
as if the author hadn't a clue that Brady and Woodson were teammates while at Michigan and that it was originally said as a fun dig at Brady. Not at all deragatory as the writer apparently is trying to imply.

he was almost entirely joking with that comment.

I can't help but think that Chuck would look great roaming the sidelines in AA as a DB coach. Definately could teach the young kids some tricks of the trade
December 26th, 2014 at 1:24 PM ^
And special teams. Maybe his clutch factor can rub off on the players in big moments.
We haven't had a memorable punt return for TD against OSU in forever. In the 90s we had 2 ...
Now I'm sad again :(

If its fireworks you want on the field, Jim Harbaugh is your man. He can't even shake hands without causing an explosion.

"Man, you just gotta jump 10 feet in the air and grab that ball!......What do you mean you can't jump 10 feet in the air?"

please remember; fuck phil fulmer...

Phil Fulmer (Tennessee Head Coach) was mad that Chuck Woodson won the Heisman over Peyton Manning, so he voted Michigan #4 in the Final Coaches Poll to cause the Split '97 National Title

but that article was kind of stupid. That last paragraph was beyond stupid, as the author really needed to add the context...
December 26th, 2014 at 1:33 PM ^
Brady understands the press doesn't take things in context.
Of course Woodson is still ticked aobut that call. It was a horribly stupid call (rule) that probably cost him a Super Bowl ring. I'd be ticked too.
December 26th, 2014 at 1:43 PM ^
But for a defensive back in today’s pass-happy NFL, Woodson’s longevity, versatility and consistency are so remarkable that there’s an argument to be made that he has proved to be the better player pound-for-pound.
To do what Woodson does as a defensive back in the league and do it for as long as he has truly does make him a special talent, but we all knew that he was long before this article was written, of course. I almost feel that this paragraph needs his stats and his NFL honors attached to it just to underscore the point.

to compare the 1997 HT 1 & 2 to every other 1 & 2. I would hazard to guess that no other 1 and 2 pairing has had comprable NFL careers.
1986 was another banner year for the HT. from the top ten, 1. Vinny Testaverde, 3. Jim Harbaugh, 4. Brian Bosworth, 7. Cornelius Bennett, 10. Chris Spielman (and 6th in 1987).
December 26th, 2014 at 1:45 PM ^
a bit difficult given they play on opposite sides of the ball, etc. But any reasonable person knows that Woodson > Manning.
December 26th, 2014 at 1:46 PM ^
"Woodson said when the rule change was announced last year, “this [10]-game playoff streak that Tom Brady has? It never happened. Tom Brady owes me his house. I’m the reason why he’s married to who he’s married to. I’m a reason for a lot of that. Everything.”
To me he doesn't sound bitter or anything, this fits with so many other Woodson quotes. Woodson is full of swagger, he's a champion who bets on himself and takes responsibility.

Randy Moss was a Heisman Finalist that year to. Remember when he wore shades at the ceremony, lol. Ryan Leaf was the fourth.
Other than Ryan Leaf, 1997...may have been the greatest Finalist list in history, considering what Woodson, Manning and Moss accomplished in their NFL careers.
December 26th, 2014 at 2:30 PM ^
If you watched the 30 for 30 about Moss, he states that the reason for his shades was b/c he was very nervous and anxious with all the NYC hoopla regarding the Heisman.

Randy Moss in 1997.

Tennessee, without Manning, was undefeated and won the national championship the following year. With Tee Martin at QB.
Wikipedia summarizes that team as follows:
The Vols won their second undisputed national title, and sixth overall, after defeating Florida State in the Fiesta Bowl, the first BCS National Championship Game. The '98 Vols beat eight bowl teams, including six January bowl teams, four top ten teams, and three BCS bowl-bound teams. The 1998 Tennessee Volunteers are ranked as the #3 college football team of all time by the Billingsley Report computer ratings.
And, with Tee Martin, they beat Florida, something Peyton never accomplished.
December 26th, 2014 at 3:11 PM ^
...I wish the case that the author made for Woodson was not so hollow.
Based only on the evidence given in the article, I actually came away with the impression that Manning has had the better career.
December 26th, 2014 at 4:02 PM ^
They have represented what is good about the NFL for two decades. Whenever they both retire the NFL will be the lesser for it.
December 26th, 2014 at 6:00 PM ^
Woodson>Manning. Both will be NFL Hall of Famers, but Woodson will go down as the best player at his position in NFL history.
