As a follow-up to the post a couple days ago it seems the Michigan Alumni at the WSJ have a formal reply:

The WSJ un-paywalls any article if you access it from Google. So to read any WSJ article, you just copy the article's headline, search for it on Google, and then: voila! The whole article is available to read. You're welcome!

Michigan’s Formal Rebuttal to Jason Gay
Use that search term and click the link...anyway the read it pretty good but Jason Gay's OP was better, unfortunately

I didn't want to put my bias up there though...

Disagree. His piece was great, but the rebuttal is excrutiating. It's like something Dwight Howard would write in response to someone making fun of him good-naturedly while everyone laughs. Reeks of a committee of people trying wayyyy too hard and missing the point entirely.

I disagree that the rebuttal is pretty good. Tried to make that clear through the use of adjectives such as "excruciating" and comparison to Dwight Howard's attempts at humor.

Also nice to see people are still using fonts from 1991.

Isn't it queer that they would write a response to one of their own columnists?
September 30th, 2016 at 5:28 PM ^
you did there.

I get it.

The rebuttal was decent, but I agree that Gay's was a better read. The guy is pretty funny.

makes the rebuttle a slam dunk.....Go Blue!

Precisely. The rebuttal should have shown the same self-effacing humor if it rerally wanted to compete. A clean sweep for Mr. Gay.

The rodent references further demean Wisconsin's mascot by "confusing" the pantless Badger nobodys with their football neighbor who are the "gophers" - and gophers are in fact rodents. Because the "busy Wolverines" could not be bothered with the distinction between the two inferior university nobodys.

Have been published by WSJ and other serials since at least the 1980's. They were funnier back then (so were Rolling Stone and the deceased National Lampoon), however, given all the lousy news and divisive opinion tensions published each day I still welcome them. They are a nice departure from the minefield of an increasingly dark and complicated world just like college football for some of us.

SORRY JASON, I’M HAVING A HARD TIME FINISHING YOUR COLUMN—THERE ARE 115,109 PEOPLE HERE AND THEY’RE ALL SCREAMING.
This might have been better at the end, if they had decided to present it as a rebuttal column rather than a list. It would have made a cute random end to a column.

First of all, thanks to the person up thread who taught me how to get around the paywall. That's way more awesome than I can express here.
Second, I thought the rebuttal was hilarious, and laid out just the way a non-Michigan grad would need. Short sentences, small words.
Third, I loved Mr Gay's article because he acknowledges our superiority. The leaders and the best in all things, including that annoying swagger. Look, I grew up in a trailer park in Flushing and now I live like a broke-ass redneck. What makes me so fancy and elite? University of Michigan, bitch.
Badger better Hail! when I walk by.

"No. 9. Michigan has a tight end named Jake Butt and a defensive end named Taco Charlton. These are not jokes. They are miracles."
They forgot Eddie McDoom!

Definitely a missed opportunity. There were similar others missed too. Must be the publication deadline. And the fact we are perceived as residing in "flyover territory" insofar as the coasties are concerned.

I didn't even chuckle a little bit at his last name, I guess I am getting old. Depressing...

"15. This week NASA hired a Michigan aerospace professor to lead its effort to figure out the origins of life and the universe. Kind of a lateral move."
My favorite from the article.

Excellent writer for the WSJ; always loved his columns. There are a lot of Wolverines over at WSJ, I actually thought he was one of them!
BUT- the people we truly ignore (who think we are big rivals) are the Illini....
