Would Mattison go to OSU ?

Submitted by Magga Saraivah on

There is actually a post over at Bucknuts hoping that Michigan cleans house this week so that they can hire Greg Mattison as their Defensive Coordinator. At first I laughed at this idea,  but I know Mattison worked for Urban Meyer back in Florida and are probably still friends.

I think there is a good chance this might happen if/when Hoke gets fired and if the new Coach does not retain him. OSU seems unhappy with their defense and what better way to solve their problem and stick it to us at the same time.

I am hoping he goes back to the NFL or decides to retire rather than ending up in Columbus

Not in the same league as Narduzzi, but his body of work speaks for itself. The defense was awful and he and Hoke made it respectable. Sure, it hasn't exactly been dominant, but there are a lot of things that factor into that. I'd hate to see him go to OSU and then shut us down.

Of course, this is at the very bottom of my list of things to worry about with respect to the "anticipated" coaching change.

highly doubt it, but wouldn't really care if he did.. he's good, but unfortunately we have way too much to worry about for ourselves before we even begin to care about this.....

I hope Mattison is at the end of his career where he feels comfortable to retire. He has shown weaknesses on defense that I wouldn't like our team to show moving on. Also he's a good enough DC that I wouldn't want to face him. That being said, mostly I just hope that at 65 he can retire and enjoy his family and minimize stress at his age.

Mattison has said in a few interviews now that he came back to Ann Arbor to work with Hoke and to be close to his family, his daughter living in Tecumseh and now having grandchildren and all that. He has also expressed disenchantement with the nomadic lifestyle of being a coordinator, so I would imagine he would lean toward hanging it up and retiring. If he took one more gig, of course, I don't know how anyone would fault him for it necessarily.

I am sorry I am not sure this would be much of a loss as I am sure we all expected a lot more from our defence this year, given that it was GM's 4th year back with the program.  While I know the offense did little to help the situation, but the defense only got 5 picks this year and only recovered 5 fumbles, and this was while playing in the B1G!

Cool. How many other times did MSU give up 30 this year?

Also if you're okay with Rutgers throwing 400 yards against us, Jeremy Langford and David Cobb running for 200 yards against us, failing to stop Maryland late in the game last week, 400 yards given up today, and touchdowns near halftime by the other team 7 times this season then perhaps you're rooting for the wrong team.

If he doesn't retire this would keep him close to Ann Arbor where his daughter lives, a big motivation for him to come to Ann Arbor four years ago.  He likes Urban Meyer and has worked with him in the past.  He is also clearly irritated with the treatment Hoke has received from parts of the Michigan fan base.

That said, I don't know that he would want to alienate this fan base to that extent.

Not sure how the hell GM can be "irritated with the treatment Hoke has received from parts of the Michigan fan base." as we Muggles should be, and are, livid with the coaching and results on the field from Brady Hoke & Crew.  While BH is a nice man, and good father figure, etc., he has been a failure in his 4 years - wins 11-8-7-5.  If GM does not see this, then he must have forgotten what Michigan football use to be.

Why would he care IF he "alienated this fan base"? What are we to him? We fire his ass and he owes us something? NO

Good luck to GM wherever and whatever he does.

No offense but why in the fuck would shitdick Osu want him? Our defense forced like 5 turnovers all season, gave up 100 td 's before every half, and were out schemed in most 2nd halfs, tell me again why anyone is going to be knocking on Greg's door anytime soon! He's done.

He can go if he wants.  I certainly wouldn't miss him.  His defenses consistently got carved up by teams like Notre Dame, OSU, MSU.  Oh, and 400 yards to Gary Nova.  See ya Mattison
