Worst State Ever! Son on a Road Trip to Virginia . . .

Submitted by BubbaT33 on

Great Big Shout Out to the Number One Son!  My oldest son, is a huge Michigan football fan, and is right now on the road from Minnesota to Virginia (Fort Lee).  He wanted everyone at his favorite blog to know that he changed his route so as to not have to travel through Columbus.  Caleb texted me from the border (HELLO: Worst State Ever).  He is refusing to stop and or spend money anywhere between Indiana and the east side of the state!

When I was 10 my mom and sisters and I stayed the night in Columbus as we were moving across country.

Our car was broken into that night and all of our stuff was stolen.

You could say my abhorrence of Ohio started that day... but it didn't.  I loathed Ohio even before that godfersaken state took all my cds and clothing.

My brother's band is on tour right now and they played in Columbus a few days ago. Apparently their Michigan License plate wasn't appreciated.

Nothing was stolen. Just the smashed window.

Good work.

I always fill up on gas in Cranberry/Dundee when driving through Ohio. I only stop to piss or drop a deuce. I pay my tolls in small change (pennies, nickels, and dimes only), and I always short them. (Only once has the attendee actually counted it out and made me fork over the full toll. They usually threaten to count it all, but give up after a couple bucks.) Standard operating procedure whenever I drive through.

And this:

Woody, famous for his hatred for Michigan and anything that had to do with the state, was on a recruiting trip in the state of Michigan, when an assistant noticed that the car he was driving was going to run out of gas and told Woody, who was dozing in the passenger seat. Woody refused to let him pull over for gas and the assistant drove on. The assistant saw the weather was starting to get bad, and worried they'd be stuck in the middle of nowhere, again stressed to Woody they needed to get gas. Woody then erupted: "No, goddammit! We do NOT pull in and fill up. And I'll tell you exactly why we don't. It's because I don't buy one goddam drop of gas in the state of Michigan! We'll coast and PUSH this goddam car to the Ohio line before I give this state a nickel of my money!" They barely made it across the border and stopped, almost literally, at the first gas station they found in Ohio.

That's actually kind of weird. I mean, if the route was faster by avoiding Columbus then it makes sense, but if he prolonged an already ridiculously long trip, that's kind of dumb.

FWIW, if you're going from Indiana and through Ohio you are usually taking I-70 through Columbus.  The only way you'd see the Horses... er, the Giant Toilet Seat is if you go N-S along s.r. 315, which you wouldn't do.  You won't even see hide nor hair of the entire bloated campus.

That said, there's no really good way in Ohio of going SE outta the state no matter how you slice it.  Taking the highway 35 SE outta Dayton may add around an hour to the trip but lets you see a bit more of West Virginia which is worth driving through.

Also, side note that not many people may care about:  I am an architectural designer who lives in Columbus, so I've worked on several building projects located there.  I've concomitantly done several bathroom plans for buildings in Ohio.  To my surprise and your as well, we've drawn actual bonafide toilet fixtures for every single one of these as opposed to coolers.

Having said that, I'm a junior architect who doesn't handle the construction administration part of the project so I've never seen what the contractors actually install....

The rest stops are filthy, the roads are crappy except the tolls and the speed limits make no sense and often < @70 mph.  And Columbus is a piss pot.  For the life of me, I can't figure why a kid would want to spend 4 years in Columbus when he could be in AA.

If he must ...be safe.   The four letter state sucks to drive through - 65mph speed limits, state troopers and CONSTRUCTION - I live in TN and drive home through Indiana every year.

I just got back from a 2 day trip to Springfield and then Milford (Cinci suburb).  We drive through every year on our trek to the outer banks of Coastal North Carolina.  The southeast corner of Ohio (where Ohio U is) is actually quite appealing to me.  We checked it out as an option for my son, but it has zero cirriculum for a kid interested in medicine.

Other than that......Ohio blows.

I get to work at a test facility just outside of C-bus. While I am looking forward to the work, I can't say the same thing about the locale. The town has only one hotel -- yippee. My management loving watching suffer.

Yes I grew up in Ohio. But as the Ohioans would say, Toledo doesn't count.

I drove from Grand rapids to Ft Lee and went through Cbus.  I like it when I have a MI license plate and they get all pisse and make grstures. It's fun!

Tell your son to have fun here. Lots to do...

...drove from VA to MI today. The stretch through The Worst State Ever was typically boring save the heavy rain from south of Cleveland until we hit Toledo.

My son drove separately from Blacksburg. When he called us and said he was 40 mi south of CBus, I asked him if he could smell the stench emanating from that shithole.

it's great for stopping to take a dump, then immediately getting back in your car and driving on.  I especially enjoy leaving an upper-decker.  Even better when I clench just right, and it forms the shape of a big Wolverine's head.  That REALLY drives the buckeyes crazy.

Driving from NC to Michigan is the worst.  West Virginia and Ohio.  OH33 is an abomination.

To be fair, West Virginia is beautiful, but with the mountain roads and tunnels there is inevitably a time where I am stuck on a mountainside in a 2 hour traffic jam and my son/gf have to use a rest room and can't BECAUSE WE'RE STUCK IN TRAFFIC ON THE MOUNTAINSIDE!
