Worst half-time show ever?

Submitted by Bb011 on November 20th, 2011 at 8:42 PM

I have already said that I think this was our best win in a long time. However, I am truly confused about the half time show. Everything about it just didn't seem right. The whole idea I thought was pretty bad, but I feel that the execution was just as bad (not the actual playing from the band members). The timing of the videos seemed haphazard and nothing really seemed to flow. I am curious as to what you all thought about the performance, because I know the people around me were thinking the same thing that I was.

The theme was the Michigan Marching Band was going viral, so they showed a bunch of youtube videos and tried to play songs with the ones they could. But they showed a bunch of clips that I don't think were that popular and the songs made no sense that the band was playing. Also, I still the band isn't loud enough for everyone to hear.

I'm sorry, I should have added that to my post. They showed many different viral videos(many of which were REALLY old) and then played music from some of them. The videos though seemed to just be randomly thrown up on the screen with no real purpose behind it.

I didn't understand what was going on?  Why  were there videos of squirrels and such on the big screens?  And the band's music was being played in such a haphazard manner!  Really an obnoxious racket was all that was.  I really think Dave Brandon should think about this, and the fact that the VAST majority of the fanbase DOES NOT want a mascot..

I would agree it was horrible. The band wasn't playing half the time and I'm fairly young (26) and I didn't know what half of those videos were. For a big game like that, it was actually embarassing. Everyone around me was saying WTF and couldn't figure out what was suppose to be going on.

Everyone in my section was baffled as well. That was an awful performance. Everything from the idea to the execution was terrible.

I still love the band though and applaud their creativeness, but that was not one of their best half time shows.

I'm not sure, but I have to wonder if the boards were actually 100% during the halftime show.  The haphazard jumping between videos and cutting out of the audio from the videos seemed to imply technical difficulties to me.  Maybe that is just faith that such a poorly edited video would never have been intended for use during halftime. :/

i was in the student section myself, and i understood maybe half of it. i asked the undergrads near me if they understood it and they said maybe 80%. that said, i thought it was kind of funny, but definitely in poor taste and disrespectful of a storied program that should've been welcomed to the big ten with a traditional experience. also, i understand that my students don't actually do very much work, but there's no need to emphasize it with a halftime show that celebrates youtube procrastination.

So let me get this straight. It's Hate Week, when the whole Michigan family should be focused on one thing and one thing only...and we're on MGoBlog bitching about the halftime show from a 45-17 stomping of a ranked Big Ten team?

Does this happen at any other school?

What? I actually have 0 complaints about the football team. As I stated in my post it was the most satisfying victory in a long time. This discussion doesn't pertain to football but the half time show. I normally never complain about these types of things, but it was so bad (IMO) that I had to see what others were thinking about it.

The videos were terrible and juvenille.  There was no coninuity to any of it and the unicorn video was stupid.  I can't explain what happened because it was so bizarre there is no words that can describe it.  A PB&J with a baseball bat video would have been more appropriate.

I kewpt waiting for the cartton video about "My Horse is Amazing" to play.   The videos were of that quality and just plain stupid.  Whosever idea it was should be fired immediately.   What would they have done if the video screens weren't working by halftime.  Was the whole thing so kind of engineering prank and the timing of the power outtage ending a "coincidence'?

All they had to do was play some patriotic music and the songs for the branches of the military and everyone would have been happy.  How could they fail so badly.

Like I said in Brian's thread, I hate to be negative about it, but it was underwhelming at best.  Good on the MMB for trying something new, and the kids did a great job with what they were given.  But it was definitely below MMB standards, as far as I was concerned.

This thread might be a good place to point this out.

Will this be the first year since its inception that the Blues Brothers Cake formation will not be performed?  I mean, it figures, since just about every game had an opposing/alumni band  performance that took up the pregame time it would have required, but that's something a lot of people look forward to every year.

I and all my friends absolutely loved it. I guess the band was out of sync with the videos somewhat and the execution could have been better, but I thought the concept was great. I think that there must be a real cultural disconnect between my generation and other generations on this, but I was super excited that they played not one, not two, but THREE Gregory Brothers auto-tune songs. It was actually my favorite half-time show that I've ever seen, with the Guitar Hero halftime show of 2007 a close second. Maybe I'm just immature or maybe you guys are just too old.

The halftime show probably made Revelli roll over in his grave.

However, the postgame show made up for it.  Being able to just listen to the MMB play the songs without all the other hoopla going on was enjoyable.

in the row in front of me thought it was all in good fun and enjoyed it.  Also a few of the Nebraska band members were "dancing along" with the band / videos.  All in all - I was fine with it.  The MMB works very hard and are a great representive of the University of Michigan.

Was this as good as the parody of all the B1G mascots (no way) or the Ferris Bueller w/ DM Cody (not hardly) ... but to say it was the worst in 40 years, is simply PATHETIC !

This does nothing but take a big dump on the MMB who spent 3 weeks putting this show together. Even if it was a bad show, there is no need for the "Worst half-time show ever?" title. It was very cheesy at times but the music and marching was excellent, like always. The timing of the videos is obviously not the bands fault. Be thankful you have one of the best marching bands in the country.

As a senior member of the MMB, you and other people that have posted here have done an A+ job of making me feel like shit. We spent the last three weeks putting together this totally unconventional show in hopes that it would appeal to the student section (and by the cheers I heard during the Nyan Cat and Double Dream Hands songs, I thought we had done a good job), and here you are dumping on all of us because you didn't like it.

Do you realize how hard it is to please 113,000+ people at once? It's impossible. Just because you didn't like one halftime performance doesn't mean you need to inslut the entire band and rally other people to hate on us as well.

You're a senior. Why are you still listening to assholes on the internet? You should know by now that people will find a way to bitch about the band no matter what. It happens literally every year. And with this show in particular, you had to know going in that it wasn't going to appeal to a large segment of the audience. I, and the people around me, thought it was a fun, if somewhat disjointed show (and a hell of a lot more entertaining than the usual blue-hair targeted stuff). Remember:
