Worst Cheer Ever?

Submitted by Zone Read Left on

While many people have been ripping on the student section for starting the wave and the "its great to be a Michigan Wolverine" chant against Miami (NTM) this past week, they have overlooked what may have been the worst cheer ever created.

After the scoreboard showed OSU losing 14-6 and everyone cheered, the students started chanting "Ohio sucks".

I'm hoping that the cheer creators were philosophy majors who started the chant because if Ohio sucks, then Ohio State must REALLY suck.

If not, WORST CHEER EVER.

Shaking keys is the worst "cheer" ever. I hate shaking keys, I never shake keys, I think it is stupid to shake keys.

It seems to me that most students shake their keys because they are totally smashed and need a break from cheering.  If key shaking happened during random non-important plays in blowouts, fine, but not during the most important plays in the game. I learned about tailgating the hard way and got a migraine during the Utah game when Johnson fumbled. I screamed so loud I felt my head pop.

Jesus, with all this crowd discussion I can't wait for someone to write a 9,000 word novel about how the Michigan Stadium crowd carried the Wolverines to victory and just wouldn't let them lose.

Not to add to an already redundant thread but the worst cheer is the locomotive cheer that all the alumni cheerleaders do during homecoming. They always prop this geriatric up on the wall near the student section to lead the cheer and I want to tackle him to the field and rip out his heart. He is the only one who enjoys this. Also, chanting "Let's Go Blue" is stupid, the "let's" is so unnecessary. Go Blue is sufficient.

The worst crowd situation ever would be a group of people so concerned about when cheers should be performed, which cheers should be performed, and HOW they are performed that the crowd just becomes a bunch of robots locked into a computer program called "tradition". Sometimes shit happens that's not pre-planned. Get over it.

And Marques Slocum? I think the people "bitching" are the legion of people that manage to muster outrage about jangling keys and waves.

I'm going to give the students the benefit of the doubt, and assume they were taking a swipe at Ohio University, THE University of Ohio State, and Miami (NTM) in one brilliant all-encompassing "Ohio Sucks" cheer.

It was an earlier post about how people commenting on this board have turned into massive dicks lately, you should take a look at it.

I am not one to complain, but I can't stand when the cheerleaders roll around on the ground forming each letter in "Michigan."  I just hate it.  That's the only thing that really bugs me for some reason.  What was with all the complaining about the wave anyways?  The wave is just really cool, but I don't like it during a game (at least when I'm in the crowd), especially in a tight one.  Whatever.

If only I had yelled a little louder,  I think we would have beaten Utah.

Instead, I was quiet. And I saw Stevie Brown look up at me. He looked so sad I wasn't being loud enough. And he just kind of slumped to the ground, allowing Utah to run for a TD.

It was that day I knew what a broken heart looked like. I'll never forget.

Marques - the complaining I see on this thread is from people who want to dictate crowd behavior and complain about people who violate their sense of "how it should be done". That, to me, is bitching.

And I know the thread of which you speak - I even posted on it. And I disagreed.

This is the reason The Big House will never get any respect for being a tough place to play... everyone is too worried about being full of snark rather than, you know, cheering their asses off for their team. I am sure our defense would rather we cheer as loudly as possibly on a 3rd down to possibly muck up the offensive communication rather than shake a few keys. It is just my opinion though, please continue being one of the weakest crowds per population size in D-1 football.

I cheer when I'm in the stadium. I like to stand because it gives me more room when you are slammed in between lard guzzling fat asses in Zubaz.

My cheering doesn't make a fucking bit of difference in the result of the game. Zero. None. Nothing. At All. Michigan will win or lose the same amount of games no matter if it's the loudest stadium or the quietest stadium.

Why do you fell a need to somehow dictate your idea of proper behavior to 110,000 other people? You want to enjoy the game? Great. Do what you want. Everyone else will do the same - what they want.

Hey, I am just saying that if you want to sit on your hands all day you should go to the opera house. You all can do whatever you  like in the stadium, but I just think the athletes would appreciate some help. Ask Terrence Taylor if he thinks he should have to wave his hands around every play to get the crowd into it.

I like the choo choo, the sword twirler, keys, wave, "GO" "BLUE", "you suck", hat waving, push ups, football out of the stadium, opponent mascot goalpost crotch ram and every other tradition and/or quasi tradition. I really don't care when you do them or if you do them. I really don't care who sits or stands or when they sit or stand. If there's a critical mass of people sitting (>2/3) don't be surprised if someone yells at you to sit. If there's a critical mass of people standing (>2/3), be prepared to stand up instead of yelling at 50 different people to sit down. I hope you make noise when appropriate, but I won't yell at you if you don't.  My primary, over riding concern is THE GAME, THE GAME, THE GAME (omg I just paraphrased Bo I'm a better fan than everyone).

Why do people feel it's their God given responsibility to manage other people's fan behavior. People have bitched about the lack of "home field advantage" since 19-dickety-two. Guy in camo pants yelling at 500 people with a median age of 65 to get up and cheer ain't going to change anything. So stop worrying about everybody else, cheer your ass off and enjoy the goddamn game in front of you.

Two things that will not affect crowd behavior:

  1. A message board post (yes, I see the irony)
  2. Somebody harassing them at the game
Students, say "It's great to be a Michigan Wolverine" whenever you want.  82 year old guy, sit on your ass all day long.  Really really really drunk guy, yell and cheer.  It's all perfectly acceptable no matter what people on the internets tell you.

I see nothing wrong with a cheer that is the truth.  It's a fact, and it's been scientifically proven, and furthermore backed up by numerous expert opinions, papers, essays, and treatises, that Ohio does in fact, beyond a reasonable doubt, suck.  And no, I don't mean Ohio, the pleasant little college in Athens.  Ohio.

Ohioans might think it's a juvenile thing to chant, but let's face it: we Michigan fans have a LONG way to go to catch up to the O-Staters when it comes to juvenility in how they refer to their rivals.

I don't really care how ppl act at the game---however you decide to cheer is obviously your decision. WHatever, etc.

I will say, as a former student at the University of Florida, that when people stand up and cheer loud during plays, it has an effect on the game. Its intimidating. Its messes w/ opponent offensive communication. It fires up the players.

What bothers me is when I attend UM football games and I choose to cup my hands over my face and yell, ppl around me look at me like I'm Jim Tressel. If your an old fart and choose to sit, fine. But don't piss on me when I'm trying my best to create a home field advantage.

Btw, the Big House isn't on the same planet compared to the Swamp in terms of atmosphere, loudness, intimidation factor. And its not because of the "shape of the stadium".

I hate: City ordinances against fuck lions, peanut brittle (so overrated), and the fact that people in Brazil speak Portuguese.

I love: Westlaw, Total Raisin Bran cereal, and soft core porn.

Can't decide which one is worthy of a new thread though.  I'll get back to you all.

Worst cheer ever?

Let's see...  Is it those new things the band is trying to do going into 3rd downs?

Or is it the completely dorky and asinine "I NEED MORE COWBELL!" crap between the 3rd and 4th quarters?

It's tough for me to choose.
