Cant remember the year but the game at state where Michigan won but the refa just decided not to blow their whistles and let state have one final free play that won them the game. This, imo, one of the worst in all of sports.

This is like trying to remeber every time you got dumped or cheated on, oh the agony! Its ok though cause you always end up with a hot nice girl in the end (Harbaugh and Championships). Nice guys do finish first....sometimes...

I regret clicking on this thread.

Thanks for bringing up the bad memory

I have two - Charles White's fumble and the phantom holding call in the 1990 Rose Bowl robbing Bo of a win in his last game.  Unfortunately there are no pictures of something that didnt happen so no pictures of somebody NOT holding.  But there are great pics of a fumble......

Ball clearly and obviously loose on the THREE yard line.

To add some major salt to the wound for those who don't remember: At the time of that play, it was 3rd and goal, Notre Dame had no timeouts left and there was just a little over 10 seconds left on the clock. If they run the ball and don't make it, they're going to come away with no points because they wouldn't have time to get the field goal unit on the field. So what should have been a 9-7 halftime lead turned into a 16-7 halftime lead for ND thanks to the officials. At that moment, I knew that blown call would come back to haunt us and make up the difference in that game...which it did 25-23. On the replay, Halliday drops the ball at the 2 yard line while he goes into the end zone holding air. The ball rolls backwards to the 3 and slides under a Michigan defender for what should have been a fumble recovery. Haliday got his ass handed to him the following year at the big house and was eventually pulled as a starter. Yes, that was epic. But it didn't ease the pain of that stupid ass call the year before.

I met Ty Willingham the next spring when my high school lacrosse team played a game at ND and then went to their lacrosse game.  I was the only guy on the team who had the guts to go up and talk to him.

I told him we were gonna kill them the next year (which turned out to be true 38-0) and told him the refs gave them that game on the bad fumble call.

So Willingham aks me, "what angle did you have on that call?" and I said, "the angle they showed on TV where it was really obvious that it was a fumble way before he got to the endzone."  Willingham just laughs and says (jokingly), "bad angle! bad angle!"

He was a really nice and personable guy the time that I met him (and easy to talk to for a shy high school junior) in spite of not being a very good coach at ND.

threw an interception to USC's Ronnie Lott in the first series.  Both teams had great defenses. Offensively, Michigan outgained the Trojans 233 yards to 157. USC had only 23 yards passing in the game.

Also, there's an interview with USC's junior quarterback Paul McDonald after the game. He said that he's never been hit so hard in any game before.  He's probably referring to Michigan's D all game long including a bone shattering sack by Tom Seabron #91 in the pic above.

The 1977 and 1979 Rose Bowls are big reasons why John Robinson respected Bo and his Michigan football teams so much.  They knocked out his star TB (Ricky Bell) in the '77 game. And almost took his QBs head off in the '79 game.

But you are mistaken. The referee signaling Michigan Ball, I do not know, but the asswipe in the foreground signaling touchdown, I do know, that is Gilbert Marchman, former Big Ten referee, and he was the one who adamently called it a touchdown on the play overruling the other referees. Unfortunately, he was actually promoted to a higher position not long after this abomination, and served in the Big until 2006 which has always led me to question both the integrity and competence of the BIg, and everyone associated with it.

The White fumble-td was an atrocious call, but the no-call on the Desmond Howard trip is right up there since (a) it cost us a W against Sparty and (b) it happened on our own field.

If we get that call and win the game, we probably don't come out flat and beat Iowa the next week.  We didn't lose another game after that and would have likely played Washington in the Rose Bowl still as the #1 team in the country.  I don't know if we would've won that game because Washington blasted Iowa, but it would've been nice to play for the MNC in Moeller's first year.

Shawn Crable's out of bounds hit on Troy Smith in 2006. Now he MOST DEFINITELY DID hit him outside the playing field but the call itself seemed to deflate our whole team, especially the defense. Also not really having to do with refs, unless you count the no-call on Larry Stevens being held, but Clockgate sucked.

There was a play where Malaluga hit UCLA's QB head to head and about 3 feet out of bounds a week later.  Result many HE GOT JACKED type highlights, no penalty called.

Also, in the 2013 Game, Touissant was hit a mile out of bounds on OUR sideline, again no call.

I think the fact that he led with the crown of his helmet and hit Smith in the earhole is the reason why it got flagged moreso than it being out of bounds. Smith was still in bounds when the initial contact occurred. Had Crable hit him below the shoulder pads, I am not sure that gets flagged and who know how that game plays out from there. It was obviously a crucial play but it was definitely correctly called.

on the helmet to helmet part. It's amazing how much the game, and how it's called, has changed.  The Taylor - Stephenson hit in the 97 PSU game comes to mind.  A penalty wasn't even considered on that play and it was in no way dirty.  Today there would be a suspension for Taylor (not that it would have changed anything).

still, Crable could have just given Smith a shove to ensure he was out of bounds and we have a damned good shot at winning that game.

Burke's foul and the entire body of slanted, piss poor officiating in the NCAA Championship game vs Arizona. There are quite a few others as already posted.

I was sitting on the goal line, about 15 rows up. I was an incoherent mess for a couple hours after the game, mumbling, "he tackled him in the endzone," over and over, wildly lashing out at random State fans we passed on the way from the stadium to Cottage Inn. It still hurts. That was a national championship caliber team.

Yep, that's what happened.  I remember it was right before the half and taking that 7 points off the board would've been huge.  But, what I also remember is how nightmarish the rest of that game was.  Michigan played pretty horribly and really didn't deserve to win.  But, who knows what happens if that call doesnt stand...
