World Cup Day 8 Open Thread - w/ US vs. Slovenia Goodness!

You know, considering there's a lacrosse category on here, you'd think there'd be a soccer. We'll see how much of a soccer blog it is today. Big game, on a workday, 6:30 am west coast time. Those who don't have to work probably aren't awake. ESPN's money at least kept us from 7:30...

I think this first game needs more Yellow Cards. Four in the first 20 minutes is just NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

I WONT SETTLE FOR THAT!!!!!

It is all but guaranteed he won't be reffing the 2nd round, and they might not give him any more 1st round games.

It isn't good for FIFA or the sport  when cards (of the red variety no less) are being thrown around like single bills at the strip club.

A Germany loss means they probably have to beat Ghana just to get into a 3-way tie for first in their group, assuming the Aussies lose all their games.  If Ghana ties Germany, Germany would be out if Serbia win.  I'd much rather face Ghana than either of the others, and definitely Serbia before Germany.

So unfortunate that the ref is shaping the game like he is. Too many cards so far for minor fouls. I feel bad for Germany, but shoot if it helps out the US in terms of us potentially not playing them, I won't be too upset.

I would still like to see Germany at least tie, GO DEUTSCHLAND!!!

Reminds me of the English announcer who said at a Cup of yore, when about to play Germany, something to the effect of...and today The Germans will try and defeat us at our National Sport, after twice this century having defeated them at theirs.

Can't believe Serbia's even bothering to challenge Germany. You're up, bros. If the offense-against-officiating continues, let it be the desperate team that drives it forward..

I really feel for Germany here. Soft reds really suck.

And actually its hard to say how this will help us. If we finish 1st in our group we could actually end up playing Germany. Not that I expect that to happen, but there is a lot of soccer to be played.

Wow, Germany just had their chance to tie it up. Poor penalty from Podolski, the keeper read it the whole way and he didn't exactly put it in the corner of the net.

It's nothing like Swiss over Spain, but for a team that was expected to be a candidate for the World Cup win, it'll be a setback but not anything too impossible to overcome.

They've gotten some terrible officiating this game too which doesn't help, but I won't make excuses for them. Germany has to pick it up.

I thought the German soccer player's name was Meatesacker, as opposed to Mertesacker. That would have been a horrible name to have!!!

The last thre games of the tournament have seen 3/1, 3/1 and now 5/1 underdogs win straight up. A crazy final leg is shaping up everywhere.

This kinda throws all of Brian's US calculations for a loop. Australia must feel bad. This year has not been kind to the big name teams.

Looks as if that group is going to be more exciting than originally advertised.

It'll come down to who can beat Australia by more and Germany finds themselves in a must-win with Ghana. Also means that we will just have to accept our 1st or 2nd place finish in group play and take it on the chin if we have to face Germany or not.

aren't nearly as bad as the score indicated.  Germany had a lot going for them in that game.  They played with the new ball long before the World Cup began, the damp condition made it possible for crisp, accurate passes, and they played at sea level altitude which helps.

Right now, there's a decent chance that France, Germany and Spain will all be out after group stage. And by the end of the day the Americans could be in first place of their group headed into the final leg.

Its like a bizarro World Cup.

I think Spain will turn it around and Germany is still tied for the lead in their group.

France, however, I see bowing out of group play. They haven't been too impressive, losing to Mexico and tieing Uruguay. All Mexico and Uruguay have to do is tie and I believe they both move on am I correct?

The way your luck is going...because while all the logic and sense is behind your picks, you've been hit by ever bit of crazy this Tournament has offered. Huge upsets, red cards...I'm expecting aliens to abduct the goalkeeper in one of your games before the half the way it's going...
