World Cup Day 8 Open Thread - w/ US vs. Slovenia Goodness!
I think this first game needs more Yellow Cards. Four in the first 20 minutes is just NOT GOOD ENOUGH.
I WONT SETTLE FOR THAT!!!!!
This is crazy. This game is going to end up 9 v. 8.
God this ref is awful.
Way too many yellow cards and some of it aren't in that yellow card terrority. W.T.F.?
GOOOALLLL SERBIA!!!!
Man with 10 men Germany has to be real careful now and really step it up.
Wow. Red card out already.
I know almost nothing about soccer... I'm assuming we don't get these refs for our game?
You usually won't get a card happy ref. Most of these bookings have really just been fouls and nothing more.
It is all but guaranteed he won't be reffing the 2nd round, and they might not give him any more 1st round games.
It isn't good for FIFA or the sport when cards (of the red variety no less) are being thrown around like single bills at the strip club.
A Germany loss means they probably have to beat Ghana just to get into a 3-way tie for first in their group, assuming the Aussies lose all their games. If Ghana ties Germany, Germany would be out if Serbia win. I'd much rather face Ghana than either of the others, and definitely Serbia before Germany.
So unfortunate that the ref is shaping the game like he is. Too many cards so far for minor fouls. I feel bad for Germany, but shoot if it helps out the US in terms of us potentially not playing them, I won't be too upset.
I would still like to see Germany at least tie, GO DEUTSCHLAND!!!
I don't feel bad for Germany. Fuck em.
This is some measure of payback for the unbelievable hijinks of the 2002 quarters.
Well strictly speaking I believe America can take credit for both of the aforementioned victories far more than the English.
we got into that war late and lost a fraction of what the UK did, not to mention Russia.
Sure we helped, but our contribution to both wars in Europe was secondary to the UK in nearly every respect.
EDIT: let's just leave it at "wow that ref sucked."
And ANOTHER card. Sheesh...
Can't believe Serbia's even bothering to challenge Germany. You're up, bros. If the offense-against-officiating continues, let it be the desperate team that drives it forward..
I really feel for Germany here. Soft reds really suck.
And actually its hard to say how this will help us. If we finish 1st in our group we could actually end up playing Germany. Not that I expect that to happen, but there is a lot of soccer to be played.
Wow. Might have been the most deserving card though.
Wow, Germany just had their chance to tie it up. Poor penalty from Podolski, the keeper read it the whole way and he didn't exactly put it in the corner of the net.
Does the US actually play at 930 or is that the pregame and the game isn't until ten. I'd rather not subject myself to Bob Ley more than I absolutely have to.
10:00
at 10am.
gives me an excuse to avoid ESPN even longer.
I'm assuming Serbia over Germany would be an upset...my question is how big of an upset is it?
Universe altering?Major? Minor?
It's nothing like Swiss over Spain, but for a team that was expected to be a candidate for the World Cup win, it'll be a setback but not anything too impossible to overcome.
They've gotten some terrible officiating this game too which doesn't help, but I won't make excuses for them. Germany has to pick it up.
I'd say somewhere between major and minor. Serbia is more talented than you might expect. They have a lot of talent at the back with Vidic and Ivanovic.
And yes the Swiss over Spain was much bigger.
Torres into lineup for Clark. That's the only change.
Where did you see the lineups? I'm happy if we see Torres.
I really don't know why we play Findley though. Ugh.
I thought the German soccer player's name was Meatesacker, as opposed to Mertesacker. That would have been a horrible name to have!!!
The Germans are done. I'm still shaking my head at the ref. That was horrible.
The last thre games of the tournament have seen 3/1, 3/1 and now 5/1 underdogs win straight up. A crazy final leg is shaping up everywhere.
Yea, but this one wasn't as much a win by Serbia as it was the referee taking the game from Germany.
Looks as if that group is going to be more exciting than originally advertised.
It'll come down to who can beat Australia by more and Germany finds themselves in a must-win with Ghana. Also means that we will just have to accept our 1st or 2nd place finish in group play and take it on the chin if we have to face Germany or not.
aren't nearly as bad as the score indicated. Germany had a lot going for them in that game. They played with the new ball long before the World Cup began, the damp condition made it possible for crisp, accurate passes, and they played at sea level altitude which helps.
Right now, there's a decent chance that France, Germany and Spain will all be out after group stage. And by the end of the day the Americans could be in first place of their group headed into the final leg.
Its like a bizarro World Cup.
but I would still put money on Spain and Germany making it out.
Yeah it depends on the definition of decent.
Gernany vs Ghana is shaping up as a big one. Germans will be facing elimination without a result in all liklihood. Cant wait to watch that one play out.
I think Spain will turn it around and Germany is still tied for the lead in their group.
France, however, I see bowing out of group play. They haven't been too impressive, losing to Mexico and tieing Uruguay. All Mexico and Uruguay have to do is tie and I believe they both move on am I correct?
That's like the US playing the Upper West Side of NYC.
Well, the Serbis busted the parlays
I'm going to try and win that back and then some on the Americans at +105
Go US!!!
Here we go boys...
mixing it up early. it's gonna be a bruiser of a match.
Wow... not good...
Fack
but what the f was that?
