Word is that Kevin Conry is Michigan's next lacrosse coach

Submitted by phjhu89 on

Collegecrosse.com is reporting that Michigan is about to hire Maryland Associate Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator Kevin Conry as the head Lacrosse Coach.  (Ed Lee of the Baltimore Sun is claiming that his sources say no offer has been made yet, but we know Michigan tends to get things nailed down before the formal offer is made.)

If this holds up, its a great hire.  Conry is highly regarded as the architect that took Maryland to 4 straight Final Fours before breaking through and winning it all this year. (Maryland's offense has been great for years.)  Michigan clearly needed a defensive minded coach.  It would not surprise me to see Conry retain current Offensive Coordinator Conor Ford.  They were class/teammates at Hopkins, both graduating in 2004 (NCAA runner-ups their junior year - Hopkins would break through in 2005.)

Me too.  I figured Michigan would want a proven head coach.  But I like the hire.  There aren't many really good defensively minded head coaches who are looking for new situations right now.  For instance, the word is they spoke to Shawn Nadelen at Towson, and that he was happy where he is.

I'm really not. I've said the entire process (and been bashed for doing so) that Michigan isn't going to get an established coach. We were either going to get a head coach from a smaller program, or we were going to get an assistant from a top program. If you take off the maize and blue sunglasses, you'd see that Michigan Lax really isn't an attractive job. Sure, new facilities are great and all, but there's really not an established talent base (routinely recruit at the bottom of the B1G) and we have to compete with some of the best lacrosse programs in the nation. Meanwhile Michigan has 0 established success. You're surprised? Why would any good head coach leave his current situation to try and build a program from the ground up while going head to head with the likes of Ohio State, Maryland, and Johns Hopkins?

You ever wonder why you get downvoted so often? Answer: because you come across as a know it all asshole that can't possibly be wrong. Yes, this was an open book exam.

Yep, I asked an honest question a few weeks ago when someone posted old news and he pulled out the hero card and round up the troops all just to gain his Dwight Schrute bucks. I wish they would do away with the point system. I've been here almost ten years and as you can see from my point total I have zero interest in collecting them. Just add some value when you can, that's all. Go blue.

On a Tuesday harbaugh went on the podcast Pardon My Take and was asked about the Schwartz handshake incident. He addressed it. Two days later I was flying back to LA from the east coast and with few options watched in order Lebatard show, Around The Horn, and PTI. All three ran that story. I don't recall such a non-story being mentioned on three national shows like that. Already seemed like old news at that point. The next day, Friday, someone posted here "Update: Harbaugh something something Schwartz". So after hearing this "news" all week I was expecting something new, maybe Schwartz commented on Harbaugh's comments, maybe Harbaugh had another comment beyond what he already said. Nope. It was just rehashing a now three day story. So I replied to the post, "thought this was going to be new news. This has been out all week" or something similar. I have seen other old news posts get killed on here. I wasn't trying to kill the guy, just point out my frustration for clicking on a post that didn't seem to add anything to a fairly well reported story. Maizen jumps all over me like a hero and pulled out the "working man" card, saying "not everyone can just sit on the internet all day" which I found humorous coming from a poster that quite literally is one of the first to comment on any post. And from a poster with 100,000 Dwight Schrute bucks, clearly trying to collect more, and of course it worked as his hero play racked up dozens and dozens of points. That's the story.

No I don't ever wonder why nor do I care. Shoot me in the head the day I worry about what an anonymous screen name thinks of a point I'm trying to make in the comment section of a blog. I'm going to say what I think and if that rubs people the wrong way so be it. I don't have the time or the energy to get caught up in the politics of this shit anymore.

Says the guy replying to a comment that he doesn't care about.  Whatever, troll...

I laughed because he said the Michigan lacrosse job wasn't attractive when I've spent the last month reading from people who cover the sport the exact opposite, hence the tweets I provided below. It's funny how whenever I say anything remotely negative about John Beilein people get their panties in a wad but this guy has been shitting all over the Michigan lacrosse job for a month and here you are to defend his honor. The irony.

It's obviously not attractive when (at minimum) two head coaches turned us down. Nobody from an established program even reigned interest. And the best we could get (which is what I said we would get all along) is an assistant from a good program. Those "experts" can say whatever their little hearts want. Doesn't make it true. And clearly it wasn't true since it didn't work out like they said.

why he gets downvotes and constant criticism of his incendiary posts, you sure waste no time in upvoting yourself right away, no matter how pathetic the post. Do you enjoy being so childish and antagonistic nearly all the time? It sure appears so.

Seems like a reasonable perspective. We can say "we're Michigan" all we want, but Michigan is a new kid on the lacrosse block and hasn't done anything notable since the program started. Just rolling out the block M doesn't make it an attractive niche sport job.

Michigan isn't a power in lacrosse yet and isn't a top-5 job just because of the name, any more than Ohio State is a top job in hockey just because of their name.

I don't think it's a top 5 job (can't put it above Syracuse, Hopkins, Maryland, Duke, ND) but it's top 15 for certain and possibly top 10 when you take upside into account. That still makes it an elite opening, especially considering most of the jobs above it rarely come open.

Yep, hilarious that Maizen would take the time to compile a bunch of opinion pieces to back his claim that this was a bad hire. It's like being picked last at recess then having your mom and dad come complain to the teacher. It is what it is man, if we could pull a better hire I'm guessing we probably would have. No journalist hot takes are going to change that. Posters like him are really the worst thing about these boards IMO. Nobody knows if this is a good hire or not. We all have our opinions. But to belittle someone because they don't agree is pathetic, a form of bullying, and effectively promotes the lack of idea sharing. It has no place on this board.

I actually compiled the tweets to show that Michigan was an attractive job, not to say anything about the hire. If you took two seconds to look at the poster I was responding to you would have seen that. But of course leave it to you to go looking for a fight when there isn't one to be made. Posters like you are really the worst thing about these boards IMO.

And one more thing, I completely agree with your commentary on bullying. You should take your own advice because the way I (a Michigan alum) am treated on here by you (a North Carolina student nonetheless) and others is appalling.
