Woolfolk's injury is bad but...

Submitted by canzior on

C'mon guys...it's not the end of the world.  It hurts but last year we witnessed how much individual players contribute to team success.  BG was a great player and Warren was praised all over the conference but even having 1 (supposed) stalwart corner isn't going to make or break this team.  One could argue that linebacker and safety improvement on this defense would be more valuable.  One player isn't going to doom us this year though.

We have all been enthusiastic this season because we are deeper and are a better "TEAM" not because we have better individual stars.  Let's keep hope alive and keep the pre-happy hour drinking to a minimum.

if we had good safety play i'd feel ok and if our linebackers didn't disappear last year i'd be ok and if our d-line has tons of penetration it can be ok. but until then, im drinking a fuckton before every game

the great contributions of BG were wasted because one position group last year was so bad it basically didn't matter what the rest of the defense did. Unless we get really lucky with freshmen corners we are likely to again see a position group that is so bad it doesn't really matter how good the rest of the defense is. I am remaining optimistic that we will get lucky with one of the freshmen corners and that Floyd will be able to hold his own but I have to unfortunately admit that DOOM really is a giant step closer after this.

I like the optimism... but let us mourn.  We'll all be talking up Floyd and Christian on 9/3/10 and beyond.  Until then... DOOM

What is the fun in being realistic?  I am going to stay positive because it is a lot more fun than sulking and feeling sorry for myself for the next few weeks.  The beauty of this time of the year is that we have no way to disprove any of our optimism, because we haven't even played ONE game yet.

Count me in for staying positive.

We will engage into full out panic mode for a day or two, until some optimistic souls like yourself will go digging through stats and find something to support the claim that Avery and Christian will do just fine this year. Then, the blog will calm down a little, with a few bitter remarks here and there, until slight amounts of optimism return.

I wake up this morning and decide to come on mgoblog, when I read Woolfolk is gone I dropped my class of milk. We're are so fucked in the secondary. The only player to play at the corner position who has ANY experience is Floyd and he wasn't that good if I remember right.

our offense will score points and I think a shitload of them! I also think we will win some of those close games this year provided the D can improve. With the news of Troy going down our chances just took a huge hit in that area. It all starts up front and if the likes of Martin, Will and the gang. QB pressure is king to a decent defense. Let us pray!

I don't even know at this point.. That's two CBs gone In two weeks. Who do we have left that'd be even capable of playing that position??

Hopefully this 2010 recruiting class will be like the 2004 one and shock the hell out of everyone. Now that I think about it, Remember 2004? When Gutierrez went down and a FRESHMAN quarterback stepped up and won us the Big Ten title. Maybe it'll happen again. Something has to or I'm gonna need to find the tallest cliff in Michigan

Wow -- great and optimistic analogy.  Just spent a few minutes combing through The Wolverine preview issue from 2004.  The projected depth chart at that time listed only one of the soon-to-be Holy Triumvirate on the two-deep, and that was Long as an "or" (with Ruben Riley) at RT.  QB was projected as Gutz or Clayton Richard, and TB was David Underwood or Tim Bracken or Jerome Jackson.

Of course, we know now that Long locked down the tackle spot by Game 3 (so thoroughly that Riley switched to the inside), Henne stepped up when Gutz went down (making Richard realize his future was throwing baseballs, not footballs), and some lightly-regarded diminutive true frosh from upstate NY opened some eyes in Games 3 & 4 and by Game 5 had become a four-year lock starting/non-fumbling/blitz-crushing blocking/yards-after-contact-gaining running back.

Granted, we also had guys named "Watson" and "Woodley" on the d-line, and "Jackson," "Shazor," "Mundy" and "Hall" in the secondary, and "Edwards," "Avant" and "Breaston" at WR.  But the point is, we've been here before, and seen true and redshirt freshman play a significant role in leading us to the promised land.  Back then, that meant a B10 Championship and Rose Bowl bid.  Now, it's 8-4, or 7-5, or something like that.  It can happen.  It has happened.  And I'm enough of a Kool-Aid drinker to say that it will happen again this year.

and minimize the role the DBs play in the success of the defense.  If we put enough pressure on the QB before he can get comfortable, the reliance on the CBs and others will not be as formidable.

As someone said in another post, having happen now is certainly better than Sept 3 or later.
